MY FRIEND REACTS TO THE 100 : 1x03

So I’m doing this from memory so it might be a bit of paraphrasing and not so precise but I started taking note of her reactions by episode 1x06. This episode made a strong impression on her, especially ONE scene which her heart wasn’t prepared for ^^

*Charlotte awaking from a nightmare* : “But she is so young ! How old is she ?”

*Flashbacks of the Griffin family* : she was at first confused about how they could watch soccer when soccer has been gone for over a century. She thinks that papa Griffin doesn’t looklike an engeneer. “He is too broad shouldered. Would make a good farmer”. So she is now calling him “The Farmer”.

*The delinquents actually doing useful stuffs, like building walls* : “Well finally ! The blonde (Clarke) needs to get back in town for shits to get done (I pointed out to her that it was Bellamy that put them to work)

*Bellamy being cute helping and teasing Charlotte* “Aw, is this the moment that we are supposed to start liking him because he’s got a tender side too ?” (she said that in a sarcastic way, Bellamy is still a jerk to her) “Well he IS a big brother” (more serious tone)

Clarke, Wells and Finn’s adventure in the car during the acid fog : she enjoyed the scene, laughed at Clarke not so fun I-can-be-fun drunkness and her verbal violence towards Wells while Finn was awkwardly stuck in the middle.

Also started to criticize the way the acid fog operated, saying that it didn’t make sense. I advidsed her to give up on the science being reliable in ths show or it would ruin her enjoyement of it.

*Bellamy’s “slay your demons” scene with Charlotte” : “Oh here comes the cute scene with Bellamy and a kid” “Well damn why does he (physically) looks cute ?” “Great ! Now she is going to murder someone !” (oops !)

She is now groaning at all the scenes featuring Finn and Clarke. She has noticed by my reaction to their scenes that I very much didn’t like it either.

SO, The Atom scene :

*About Bellamy* “Ah now is the time when you are going to have to prove that you are not just a talker, and got balls ! Not easy uh ?” Then she added : “Use your axe !”

*Clarke arriving and taking the knife from Bellamy* “Oh so she is going to be the one to do it ?” (impressed tone)

Then she wanted to hide her face because she is a bit sensitive but I told her to watch because I didn’t want her to miss it. And then came THE LOOK, you know which one, and her reaction was priceless ! She actually kinda jumped and “OH MY GOD ! That look ! I can’t ! I’m too sensitive, my heart !” She fazed staring at nothing for a few seconds. “I think that look just transformed me”. You know I get it but I didn’t expect that much of a reaction

*Clarke and Wells scene* : she found it very moving, found Wells so pure “THAT is friendship or maybe more for him”. But honestly she hadn’t recovered from the Atom scene yet.

*Finn making an appearance* : “You go away I’ve made my choice !” (#TeamBellamy) Honestly that reaction might have been in episode 4 I don’t remember.

*Wells dying* : she jumped. “OH MY GOD !” “Argh she cutted his fingers too” “She’s singing Clarke’s lullaby now !” “What the hell ?”

So this episode was quite the trauma for her between the shock of Wells death and Bellamy’s gaze. She told me afterward “This actor should be forbidden from giving this kind of stare. It is unfair”. I think she is in love now : “I want the gif of that scene !”

Edit : I forgot to say that she found the scene when Papa Griffin get arrested was not very well acted by Eliza but that his execution scene was.

i hate to add to your probably overflowing inbox (i totally agree about all the bell v clarke drama #teambellamy ftw) but i rewatched 5.09 and the numerous camera pans to a seemingly annoyed murphy after raven mentions shaw (i think i counted 3) really bugged me. it seems really weird and out of place for murphy so i’m not sure if it was scripted or not but if was a directors choice, your ex mortal enemy can fight ME in a parking lot. please tell me im not crazy for being bothered by this haha.

I don’t mind getting questions! (especially not about directing/filmmaking!!!) it’s just going to take me a while to work through all of them

I actually disagree. I think there’s a good explanation for why that scene is framed the way it is with Murphy.

first of, credit where credit’s due - I had zero faith in this director to give me a good episode after the mess that was 4x04, but he actually gave us a fairly solid episode - it’s actually stronger than a lot of the episodes this season, because this season’s filmmaking has been WEAK. it had some issues, but it told it’s story effective and the issues it had weren’t distracting - sorry ex mortal enemy, I had no faith in you.

that off my chest, here’s my breakdown of the space squad scene and how it handles Murphy:

Raven argues Shaw is more valuable alive; when asked how, she says, “Intel. We need a distraction to escape, right? According to Shaw, this pace is a civil war waiting to happen.”

at this moment, we pull out away from close-ups of Raven, Echo, and Emori as they talk to a wide-shot that reveals Murphy turning to look at Shaw

as Raven talks in-depth about the friction between Diyoza and McCreary, we cut to the first close-up of Murphy’s face, studying Shaw

why a close up of Murphy here? why not Raven, who’s talking, or Echo, who she’s trying to convince? why draw attention to Murphy turning to look over at Shaw?

because this is the EXACT INFORMATION that Murphy will later use to take advantage of Diyoza and McCreary’s animosity and the distrust between their people and turn the sides against each other - this is important information for Murphy to know, and the show is drawing our attention to him as he learns it

here’s the second close-up:

I don’t buy that this is an “irritated” or “jealous” face - he’s taking in what Raven’s saying. He’s considering the information AND THE SOURCE and processing it - he even gives a little head nod to himself as he does.

I believe the reason why he asks, “Shaw told you this?” and why he looks at Shaw as Raven talks, isn’t that he’s jealous his friend is getting close with a guy or annoyed that Raven is talking with Shaw or even really concerned that Raven appears to be getting close to an enemy (like I originally thought during the sneak peak) he’s processing where the information came from and debating whether it’s trustworthy. Murphy’s priority is surviving. Like always, he’s focused on figuring out how to do that, and he’s using all the information he has at hand to devise a plan.

I believe he’s clarifying it was Shaw because he trusts that Shaw is both accurate (knowing Diyoza and McCreary way more than they do) and somewhat trustworthy (Murphy’s experience with Shaw IS that he helped save their lives and let Murphy escape, so he’s probably more willing to listen to him than he would any other person in Eligius)

here’s the moment that confirms that reading to me - Raven finishes suggesting they can turn Diyoza and McCreary against each other, and Echo argues, “It’s not that easy.” Cut to our third close-up of Murphy:

it’s on Echo saying “it’s not that easy [to make the sides fight each other]” that Murphy makes his decision to go do exactly that and prove exactly how easy it is for him to do so. this moment is Murphy making the decision to act on what Raven’s telling them. there’s even a nice little music cue with strings (?) right after Echo’s line that marks the moment Murphy stops considering and decides to act.

and then as the others keep arguing, we get Murphy getting up, (again, the cut from close-ups to a far shot of the group draws our attention to it) walking over to one of McCreary’s men, telling him something, and immediately and easily starting a fight between him and one of Diyoza’s men - and when it successfully works, he says, “Raven’s right.”

there IS a legitimate story-telling reason why there are so many close-ups of Murphy this scene - it’s foreshadowing exactly what Murphy will do later in this episode. it’s about Murphy getting the information he needs to devise his plan and create a distraction. this moment is about MURPHY, not about Raven and Shaw - or even Raven and Murphy

I think the ONLY REASON we’re questioning if Murphy’s expression are annoyance or jealousy at all is because we’re viewing it through the lens of being constantly on-guard about where the show is taking this whole Raven/Murphy relationship, which is only happening because of how many people seem to actually think the show is intentionally sewing romance here AND because us non-murven shippers were a bit burned by the mischaracterization and misstep in 5x04

honestly, I don’t believe the possibility of people reading this scene as romantic jealously lmao i can’t sorry even crossed the director’s mind

because if you WANTED to make this jealously, here’s some things you would do:

frame Raven’s response to “Shaw told you this?” as either a defense of Shaw which cuts to another reaction from Murphy or something that clearly pits Murphy and Shaw against each other - OR it would actually cut between showing Murphy and Shaw like the way the show has clearly cut between Becho and Clarke - but instead, Raven’s response is about strategy and it’s directed to ECHO and we never ever get a shot of Shaw the whole time

probably have Murphy continue to side with Echo that they should kill Shaw, instead of agreeing with Raven and letting him come with them without any kind of argument

show us Murphy watching Shaw and Raven interact later when they have their moment - again, like the way the show constantly shows us Clarke reacting to Becho. if the intention was to show jealousy or any kind of irritation on Murphy’s part about Raven’s relationship with Shaw, they would ABSOLUTELY have shots of Murphy’s reaction to them talking

but they don’t, because this moment was about foreshadowing, and not anything about Shaw and Raven’s reaction

I get being on high-alert about it and questioning - especially after 5x04 - but I really truly think this was about foreshadowing Murphy’s later actions in this episode

there are a lot of things that just doesn't make sense to me..? 1. At the beginning of the season Clarke didn't even want to put her name on that list and now she betrays Octavia and dishonours AGAIN the Grounder tradition locking herself and the rest of skaikru in the bunker knowing exactly it's the only way everyone can survive praimfaya! before the conclave she gives Roan a speech about wanting to save humanity, skaikru being or not included just to be an hypocrite and steal the bunker for herself and her people???! because if there's a clan who's gonna survive it's gonna be skaikru??!! what kind of white supremacism storyline is this?! I knew Clarke was manipulative but malicious? This is just so OOC for Clarke!! I don't get it!! 2. Another thing I don't understand is.. why is it that they write totally OOC stuff for Clarke to make Bellamy look good? To make him the "voice of reason"?! Bellamy of all people! The same Bellamy who killed 300 people without showing remorse, the same Bellamy who handcuffed Clarke in Arkadia risking her life, considering she had been living with the grounders for 3 months and Pike was in charge! The same Bellamy who had no problem at all with burning an innocent grounder village! They ruined Bellamy's character in season 3 imo there's not much you can do to redeem him. So Clarke has to be a white supremacist so Bellamy can get away with everything he did? 3.
