Teaching Gratitude to Your Team

There are 3 perspectives id like to add here. The first from ADHD, 2nd from the definition if Leadership, and 3rd from project mgnt.

From ADHD, it is easier to reach gratitude through positive events. 95% of all events are neutral, neither happy or sad . 5% are positive events, that generate a happy emoji ☺️. less than 1% of the events are negative, that generate a sad emoji 😭.

When you are happy, it is easier to express gratitude for the things you have achieved.

From Project Management, the first rule says .. manage expectations .. so, when working on a project, its important not only to manage the stake holders and contractors expectations, but also to provide feedback as the project is progressing. Thus feedback should not be held till an annual review, but constantly given during the project to encourage team members to keep working.

From Leadership .. guiding intent w integrity .. the style of leadership you choose determines the quality of the team you work with. So, for you, as a project leader, the goal is to teach the team members and stake holders how to give gratitude and why its important. And, as everyone starts saying thank you for little positive events, the team as a whole grows stronger w each experience to continue to work together and harder towards the goal.

Raised in one of the roughest areas of Queens, Southside Jamaica, Senior has what you would call a "familiar yet, different" story to him.

Sr spent his early yrs growing up in Rochdale Village, along NY Blvd and 134th Avenue. As a child he attended P.S. 80. At age 9 Sr. realized that he was musically inclined when he listened to, then mimicked the theme from the movie "Big" on his mother`s butterfly Baby Grand piano. Soon after, he noticed that he was lyrically gifted subsequent to an embarrassing moment, which took place in his 4th grade classroom.

Sr turned that negative energy into something positive. Becoming more confident with his newfound talent, he started to then share it with his schoolmates. The reaction that he received from the other children he considered friends was less than supportive; girls teased him and boys taunted him with momma jokes.

After a while he started to second-guess himself & lose confidence in what he thought was something very special. A few months later, Mother Hail came for a presentation she was giving about "Life and Life`s Situations" at his school. It was the inspiration she evoked during her lecture that made Sr. realize that no matter what the current situation, anything and everything is possible.

It wasn’t til the age of 14 when Sr. began to take music seriously. It started in the lunchroom of Martin Van Buren H.S., making beats by banging on the tables - spitting fire verses was his passion. What he never enjoyed was "Battle Rhyming"; not that he wasn’t capable, but to Sr he could care less about who was better at that moment. He just wanted the respect of his opinion that then and through today still feels he is entitled to, but that wasn’t all.

Ol` School artist Mike D from the group "Main Source" had a lot to do with the development of Sr`s talent. Before Sr. had even known Mike, the only thing he knew how to do was rhyme & the verses that Sr. wrote down on paper would look like short stories. D taught him about the industry in general, yet the most important lesson was the fundamental basics of being a "Real" MC.

Being able to move the crowd Mentally & Emotionally is what Mike expressed to him on a regular basis. He absorbed everything D taught him and applied it to his technique. He soon developed more confidence in his writing, delivery, and his dreams of becoming a successful recording artist.

In Feb. of 1998, Senior won the 5-borough battle competition hosted by Triad Articles of War (Hip-hop public access TV show). This was only the beginning of his list of accomplishments. The following year in October, he made history at the age of 17 by becoming the 1st MC to win "Amateur Night" at the world famous Apollo Theater.

Since then, Senior has graduated from The Institute of Audio Research (NYC, NY Nov. 2001); he is now a New York State certified Engineer & Producer of music. Shortly after graduating, he became an assistant engineer at King Touch Recordings. There he worked on several in house projects. One of these projects consisted of an album recorded by reggae recording artist Muziah (A.K.A. Phillip Famous). The album featured 16 audio tracks and out of the 16 tracks Senior mixed 11 of them, including the song featuring a special guest appearance by fellow reggae artist George Nooks.

By April 2002, Sr had become head Engineer at Fun House Studios (LIC, NY). He worked there for a year before an unfortunate incident occurred, leaving him unemployed. However, before all the drama had hit this young businessman`s life he already formed G-String`z Production`z, Ltd.

Senior had gone back to school in 2004, to take classes specializing in digital recording & music/ audio post-production (Pro-tools, Reason, Digital Performer, etc). Currently, he`s a NY State Certified Graphics Designer, Mixing/ Mastering Engineer, Producer, Song-Writer, Artist Coach, Business/ Financial Consultant, part of a mgnt team of an international company & a NY State Licensed Private Enforcement officer/ 1st responder.

I haven’t quite decided if I will be changing my Artist Management team at this time. My current contract with GAM (Global Artist Management) ends at the end of this month of June, 2019; I am not certain if I will be resigning with GAM in NYC. Using the 1st law of project mgnt, the definition of leadership, and the rules of group inclusion.

1st Law of Project Mgnt says .. manage expectations .. If you do this and teach this, you will build a team that trusts its members. And. It will teach them how to communicate their expectations with others.

The definition of leadership .. guiding Intent w Integrity .. reinforces the 1st law of project mgnt by creating the norms everyone operates under. These norms.. known as the Social Contract .. stipulate how team members are expected to interact. And, if everyone is expected to manage expectations properly, then those who don't are excluded from the group.

The leader of this team is responsible for teaching these norms, maintaining the training, guiding group members through the hard convos around expectations, and culling group members who repeatedly break the norms and cause problems.

In contrast managers are responsible for measuring the groups productivity. Ex .. time to complete tasks.

From Group Inclusions, each member has a specific purpose for being in the group. Their skills may overlap, but each member may only be tasked w or 2 parts of completing the whole project. And, yes, unruly members can be swapped out, as needed or sidelined.

Members who feel threatened or weak need to address their personal self judgements, or when the groups social contract keeps being violated, will be excluded. In contrast gratitude towards other members assistance goes a long way to improving and maintaining group cohesion. This is easily achieved by maintaining small attainable goals, which produce positive events.
