The crossover I’ll wait for but probably never receive it. These two could 100% work in the same universe. And they both end on such a sad note.

Hudson and Rex S03E16 - The Art of the Steal - PART B
Black letters in quotes: Actual show quotes.
Green letters in quotes: What I come up with my twisted brain.
Tumblr media
"Will's a terrible flirt but he's actually kinda sweet." Jesse! Don't call that cheater sweet in front of Charlie.
"Wait a second, I recognize that scratch." Color me shocked. It came up again.
Tumblr media
Arresting frenemies.
Does anyone ever rob banks for the money anymore? According to crime shows, no.
Tumblr media
"It's the right thing to do." Dude, I wouldn't give you anything with that. What is this, a Jedi mind trick?
Tumblr media
Flash mob used as a way of escape. I've seen this somewhere before.
Tumblr media
"Humans are weird."
Tumblr media
There's literally no reason for the slow-mo but look at how good the screenshot gets. You can't get this at full speed.
Tumblr media
And here's Charlie. My confusion remains.
Tumblr media
Dude has the finger on the trigger and waving the gun around. He would have pressed the trigger without even realizing it.
This is totally privileged kid behavior. Who the hell does four robberies just because his dad won't tell him the truth?
Anyway. No one cares. Back to the team gathering.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Joe: "I never should have doubted you in the first place, and for that I'm sorry." Rex: "Nice of you to recognize it."
The TV rip is accompanied by a short video of the cast celebrating the fact that they got renewed for a fourth season, which is not attached to any of the webrips. Bummer. Anyway, while this is the right episode to be chosen as the season finale out of the last few ones, it's not very strong in my opinion.
So, S3 was way better than 1 and 2 overall. I liked the extra fresh air they got on cases, even if that change was brought on in major part due to Covid. But there's nothing dumber than having access to beautiful locations and not using them. Also, there was more "team as family" scenes, more Charah scenes, and my favorite, more whump scenes.

Late s6 thoughts because I haven’t had time to rewatch 615 yet:
Is s6 going to be my favourite season? No.
Am I going to find it re-watchable? Definitely.
While it had a lot of mediocre episodes, there were some definite standouts. I don’t like that they went back to mostly standalone episodes rather than keeping character/story arcs from previous seasons going. I chalk that one up to the change of showrunner. Clearly they were trying to put the focus back on Charlie as opposed to the team, and put the Charah moments on the backburner. Sometimes that worked for me, but more often it really didn’t.
I’ve enjoyed the last handful of episodes a lot more than the early ones. 615 I think knocked it out of the park.
I hope they’ve seen and taken some of the feedback from fans who were really confused/upset with how the season started, and that if they get another season, we get back to that team-y feel.
And I fully believe a Charah proposal could happen, but it won’t be until next season. But oh damn, Charlie Hudson…the character growth since s1. I am living for it.

Flare of the Dog: A character called ASHer in a case about arson can only be the bad guy. This is like Sarah's version of Blind Justice in which she develops a slight 'attraction' to the culprit like Charlie did to Leah Perkins. This was just the writers slow way of telling us that Charah will happen, but we'll make you curse along the way. However, Detective Hudson your slight jealousy of Sarah saying she is with Asher can't be hidden, despite you probably denying it. Sarah and Rex working as a team is adorable and how he doesn't bark his disagreement when she tells Charlie he might only want to solve cases with her in future is cute... mind you she had just given him a bone so he was bound to agree with her.

(P. S. Okay, now I think I can post this.)
You read my mind.
This season we got a lot of both many pluses and many problems and one of them is the trampling of the dynamics of the team as a family. This is what the entire series is based on. Together with Charah, together with Joe and Jesse as father and son, as with Rex and the team, etc.
We were given new characters this season, the old ones were returned, and the writers didn’t even bother to tie everything together properly. This is a global problem of the whole season.
The team forgot that they are family and the latest episodes confirm this. I love and hate this take at the same time because it's so unbalanced.
Yes, in the first part there was everything: the seed for a good plot, for the dynamics of the family, and as a result, everything is flushed down the toilet and Jesse isn't really revealed (only if in scenes with Crystal and Sarah, who pull out all the dynamics of the family) I liked Sidney Scott, but was hoping that in this episode we'd get the heat of the Impawster Syndrome (which I think is generally the best episode that reveals Jesse Mills)
Damn, you showed Jesse Mills in a dash this season, why not give him more action in moment where his loved ones are in danger? No, we won't, although you gave Sarah a great line about how much she believes in Jesse.
I'm sorry, but I'm also pissed off.
Rant time.
While I love Charlie and Sarah, I want more Jesse. I want to see the consequences of him having cracked ribs and not just one tiny wince and then he is fine the rest of the time. He even runs at one point. I’m sorry but I’ve had bruised ribs and that crap hurts to breathe, let alone run. I want a Jesse-centric episode to actually be about Jesse and not completely about Charlie and Sarah, like they did with rexit stage left and the Joe-centric storyline. We barely saw Charlie and Sarah as a couple but their dynamic was there subtly.
I thought this season was when they would branch out to more of the characters and their relationships with each other. So far, all I have seen is the same Charah-centric show it has been and I am happy that they finally have become a thing, but it is a cop show and it has more main characters to delve into and their relationships with each other and the possible growth of those individual relationships. I want to see Joe and Sarah have more scenes together, I want more serious Jesse and Charlie moments instead of Charlie and Jesse just messing around. I love the scenes with Jesse and Sarah this season. The brother-sister dynamic between them is beautiful.
Sorry for the rant.

Chuck (& Casey) fic doc + Chuck divergence aus?
Thank you for asking!
These are both “compilation of ideas” docs rather than fic docs, so I’m actually not sure what’s in them without looking... Let’s see!
“Chuck (& Casey) fic doc” is the first one I started when I got back into Chuck...a couple months ago? whenever that was. It’s the basic list of Chuck fic ideas and notes (mostly revolving around Casey in some way, hence the name) that aren’t big enough to get their own document or easily categorizable into a sub-list. Highlights include:
Ideas for three or four S4 episode tags, focusing on Casey’s arc in that season of “realizing he’s important to other people and accepting Burbank as home.” (My “First Night Back” oneshot would be the first of these, actually.)
Chuck having a big party on his 36th birthday with all his family, and then at some point dropping the revelation on the rest of them that it’s the tenth anniversary of him receiving the first Intersect. Just because that has potential for a lot “then vs now” retrospection on the part of all the characters.
Orion being alive. I’m SET on this idea, in my head if nowhere else.
A lot of different ideas that are basically all iterations of “exploring how much the team’s relationships have grown over the course of the show” (some bullet points just being things I like--instance, any fic that highlights Casey having rubbed off on/been a role model for Chuck and Morgan)
A whole separate list of SG-1 crossover concepts that started from the headcanon of Adam Baldwin’s minor role in SG-1 actually being Casey. These include:
1) Casey getting to introduce his team to the SGC and watch Chuck and Morgan’s nerd brains explode
2) A rogue Goa’uld tries to take Chuck as a host and Casey has to stop it, preferably without revealing the SGC’s existence
3) The reveal that Shaw’s actually been a Goa’uld host since he died in Paris
4) Them finding Bryce in cold storage again, but this time it’s Ancient stasis or something (because the Ring has links to the NID and/or the Goa’uld in this version).
The two universes mesh surprisingly well, honestly! Also, I’d love to just do the character interactions. I’d love to see Casey hanging out with SG-1 as old comrades, and they’d all love Chuck, obviously. Really, it holds a lot of the same appeal as an SG-1/Leverage crossover.
---
“Chuck divergence aus” is exactly what it says on the tin--a list of different potential canon-divergence points that I think would make fun AU fics. More detail under the cut, because A) this is getting long and B) by the nature of these concepts, there are a lot of spoilers here.
Anything revolving around the end of "First Date" (first ep of S2, where Casey almost assassinates Chuck). Maybe Chuck sees Casey and they talk it out and THEN Sarah comes in, leading to a S2 where Chuck and Casey are deliberately collaborating to keep Chuck alive. Maybe Sarah comes in after Casey's reveal but before he commits himself, so all Chuck knows is that Casey was/is going to kill him and he has to deal with THAT. Maybe the Cipher works fine, and Sarah comes for their date, and Casey hides until something breaks and he sends the two of them on the run instead.
Ellie sees Bryce in the yogurt shop in S2 (something she ALMOST DID in canon) and gets VERY upset because A) he's alive? and B) he is STEALING CHUCK'S GIRL. AGAIN. and then C) does this mean he's Sarah's ex??? How does that happen??? And basically they have to tell her at least 60% of the truth and also she absolutely tears into Bryce Larkin. (I just want Bryce to get yelled at properly.)
S2 AU where Sarah gets fired for being emotionally compromised and doesn’t come back by the end of the episode, so she’s replaced by a meaner agent and Chuck doesn’t find his dad like he did in canon. This could very easily cross the line into excessive emotional whump, but it would be interesting to explore what happens when things are REALLY bad for Chuck and there’s no serendipitous solution to his problems.
A couple different ideas on how things could have gone differently at the end of S2 when the team is divided, and other ways that could have been resolved.
"Chuck vs the Ring" goes without Ellie's wedding being disrupted and everyone goes about their lives. Chuck and Casey are texting buddies now because Chuck can't help himself. Eventually they maybe get pulled back into fighting the Ring? Because it's hard to imagine Chuck NOT being a hero… maybe he and Sarah have to go rescue Casey from something. Bryce is there to be annoying and have his own wrongness about everything rubbed in his face.
Casey doesn't get thrown out a window in that one S4 ep because either Chuck or Sarah just says "nope" to the whole idea (maybe there isn't a platform, maybe Chuck snaps, maybe Sarah isn't willing to risk it). Probably ends with Volkoff firing Sarah? But everyone gets out alive and that's the vital thing. Also there’s a group hug.
Casey gets Intersected with the GRETAs in that one S4 plot! Everything goes worse because now he's actually a mission-oriented robot without the capacity to be affected by other people's feelings…but he breaks through it enough to help Chuck defuse the bomb and then turn in an anti-GRETA report to the higher-ups. Then he gets DE-Intersected and is…very very upset. As are his partners once they have the full picture.
They tranq Intersect!Morgan in S5 and lock him in Castle like three terrible decisions earlier than in canon, and then call in Ellie. I just need a world where Morgan didn't dump Alex via text, really.
Chuck gets the Trojan Horse Intersect, as Decker planned. I don't know what would happen, but I know it would be very very bad and I would like to see it.
No one gets the Trojan Horse Intersect because Casey and Sarah go "NOPE we don't need this, put the Intersect down Chuck" and store them away. I don’t know how much this would change S5′s larger plot in the end, but I’d like to see Chuck’s team tell him they’d rather have him without the Intersect, and maybe get it through his thick skull that he can contribute to the team just as well either way.

Overall recap and review for S6 of Hudson and Rex:
I have to write this before I completely forget what happened and I require a rewatch.
I cannot emphasize enough how difficult it was for this show to recover from the dissonance of the first few episodes in the eyes of many fans. The worst of all was the first episode, also known as the "Visit Newfoundland" episode or whales episode, which left a very sour taste in my mouth. It was pretty much focused all on Charlie and Rex and yes, that is the title of the show, but when you have spent time establishing the rest of the characters and working towards something of an ensemble, that's not gonna fly anymore, not even with and old Rex franchise fan like I am. Not to mention that their scenes weren't that special either (they definitely had better scenes showcasing their partnership down the road), and let's not forget re-using S3 footage in the scene where Charlie emerges from the water. Then we have all the mention of the whales, and of course we can't actually have the characters interact with the whales, so the whole point was to tell us, hey, we have whales, come visit and see them up close! Understandably, the show needs to advertise the place it's filmed at, the other Rex shows have done it too (way more subtly). It does not need to open the season with that episode, though. This would have been a fine filler somewhere after the first few episodes, not the first episode. Oh, and they need to stop opening with a disappearance case, in my opinion, at least.
The second had more substance and filled some of Charlie's backstory regarding his father and his family's dynamics (his father's fights with Jack), but it still fell on the same motif as the first one. There was no team work. I did appreciate it more than the first one because there were things happening, but it didn't feel like a classic Hudson and Rex episode. The army/navy hype, it doesn't really impress me, especially since I've seen tons of it in other shows I watch, I did like that it brought up somewhat the adjustment issues of people after they leave the service, though.
The third one was a classic crime show trope with a visually impaired witness. I liked that one more than the other two, and it was a good episode overall, more to the tone of the show. The casting was also good, a bad actor can tank that kind of episode, they got lucky with the actress who played the witness. Or, well, this is what happens when you pay attention to who you hire for the job. That's not always the case.
The fourth episode should have been the first one. It still gives Charlie and Rex a chance to work pretty much alone and showcases their partnership but it does also emphasize more the work that the rest of the team does, and gives all of them something extra to do. It showcases Charlie and Rex's partnership and how much in tune they are way better than any other episode, in my opinion. Plus, it gives us some Charah moments, which hey, since you made them a couple, you'll have to write, show. The scene where Sarah questions the bad guy's mother is very nice. The scene where Joe and Jesse get to arrest the mind behind the attack is also nice teamwork. I will never forget Charlie throwing that knife, that was fucking great. I could talk for a long time about that episode, it was my favorite from the first part of the season.
Episode five is a bit silly but so is this show. Again, superhero episode is a pretty standard crime show trope used as a filler. Which it was in this case too. Still, I'd have liked for their fillers to have some more substance, like giving as more character details, which is the original purpose of filler episodes. The one thing I remember it added on was that Joe had been watching the superhero character when he was younger, which was important since it was a black superhero. Even that needed some more detail. In the more positives of this episode, Sarah got a lot of time out of the lab evaluating the man playing the original superhero character, which I assume was supposed to related to the degree she was studying for? And Charlie got tased, so hooray for that whump!
Episode six, I thought that would be more of a Knives Out storyline as advertised but it pretty much was a treasure hunt. Also, so many dogs. You can never have enough dogs. The scene where the new dog owners were trying to untangle their dogs is hilarious. There is more showcasing of how well Charlie handles Rex, and even commands Rex so that he can handle the other dogs. Not much to say about the episode, it was too feel good to pay attention to the plot. Oh, and Jesse officially became a detective.
A pause here for the biggest mid-season hiatus I've seen on this show. It was offputting, undeserved, and got on everyone's nerves, with CityTV being unable to program it in their "insanely busy" schedule. Like, who the fuck do they thing they are? They're lucky part two of the season was good.
And it was, starting with episode seven. Everyone needs to make a Russian spy episode at some point, so that was Hudson and Rex' time. Yay for the first domestic Charah scene of the season. I will forever wonder if episode five had a dinner scene that was cut, by the way. Also, it might be random, but part two was where most Charah scenes were. It's pretty obvious that no one from the production had programmed the hiatus to start after episode six, though, and who knows if this episode was intended to air as the seventh one. Anyway, some backstory about Sarah's dad too here. Bodies dropping, high stakes, I mean for this show anyway, and more Charlie whump. It's sad how they glossed over poisoning from a lethal agent, I mean, normally he would have so many side effects after that and he would certainly not get back up after ten seconds! Let Rex arrest the spy, he can even cuff him for all I care. He already almost administered the antidote.
Episode eight, again a popular crime show trope. I was against having Rex inside the prison, but that was a personal preference, having seen a similar episode in the original. Plus, there is the implausibility of the thing but less so in a show about a superdog. Unexpectedly, Charlie and Sarah had a moment even though they were apart. Well, two moments. Joe also shone as Rex's handler. Again, Charlie whump with the minimum of consequences and aftercare. They aren't really great at the after part, and that goes for a lot more things than whump. But the episode was very good, I liked a lot that they were showing Sarah's worry about Charlie multiple times this season (notable in this episode, some in five with the tasing, in eleven quite a bit, and very much in fifteen), although I did expect more to come of it. Maybe even a fight.
Episode nine, where we realize episode two was a setup for something. Finally, and it makes us see episode two in a new light. That had been my guess initially but you never know with this show. They make Charlie's dad instantly unlikable, not to the point where one has to absolutely hate him, but to the point where one can safely say that there are more issues than what Charlie said about his dad's fights with Jack and him being stuck in the middle. It does seem like his dad spent a lot of time away from his family, and he pretty much considers his soldiers more like a family than his own. Or that's what he initially shows because at the end he does make an effort to reach out to Charlie, even after Charlie has given up on it (understandably). I do like the scene in Joe's office where Charlie confides in Joe.
Episode ten, the golf episode. It's funny that I detest golf so much and they put in in everything. Having said that, the scene where the team plays golf is nice, with banter and everything, although I think it creates a huge plot hole when Joe references the dates when he became a member of the golf club. Of course Rex had to ruin the fun by doing his job. Take some time off! No one likes an overachiever (yeah, we do, I'm sorry I said that). Some minor Rex whump that is also inconsequential to the rest of the season, like all whump is in this show. I'm almost sure they didn't mean to pair that episode with eleven, though.
Episode eleven, I liked the whump part. I will say again that they did some good casting for the creepy lady. Nice scenes with Rex and the horse. Pretty nice to see Sarah's worry over Charlie's head injury and him stubbornly refusing to stay at the hospital (hey, he's got two almost good legs this time, he's not going to stay there while Rex is missing). Rex is shot but is magically healed a few scenes later. Charlie's injuries stay for the whole episode. I heard that unfortunately the horse has passed now. Rest in peace!
Episode twelve, I was hoping beyond hope that Sarah's hostage scene would last more than thirty seconds. Didn't happen. I have found the episode that the folks at Up Faith and Family will hate this season, and will be forced to put up a warning for in their streaming service or whatever it is they do to protect themselves from... trans people? Yeah, families seem in real danger from having an honest conversation with their kids. Did you know that you can *reads tweet* cause a real problem in a parent's house by showing trans people and creating questions for their kids? And wait until they find out that the trans character was played by a trans actor. Anyway, I had to say that. On the actual episode, another cute Sarah scene, although in that scene Charlie does come off as a buffoon when he shows that he doesn't know that while dogs don't see colors the way humans do, they can still see colors. I mean, how has that not come up in six years (or whatever number of years) that he's had a dog at home? Also, did you know that the SJPD has other detectives, who are of course less competent than Charlie? The guy putting down Sarah... instant dislike, obviously. And it went worse for him from there. A good episode, as far as I'm concerned.
Episode thirteen, I think I was heavily influenced by my own perception of what that episode should be to fully enjoy it. But it was okay in its own way. I loved the scene where Rex tried to hide Joe's suitcase so that he wouldn't leave, Charlie's mention of the team being a pack, even though a few episodes made me have my doubts about that and about the significance the writers/showrunners put on these characters and their bond with each other. I liked Charlie and Jesse teaming up too, even though them failing to secure the killer was something that would have made me, if I was in charge, get them through some extra training. I liked Sarah's role in this episode, didn't like how cagey the wife was especially when it came to Sarah. If you see every woman your husband knows as a threat to your marriage, that marriage won't last long.
Episode fourteen was an okay filler. I'd have liked them to do more with that, and also, don't show Rex in risk of getting hurt in the trailer when nothing will come of it. I mean, that was a letdown, I've talked about it before. We see more of Jesse as a detective again, which is cool. And the house, oh, the house. Too bad they installed an alarm and we're spared the unexpected visits, although someone could always disable it, I guess. Rex certainly thinks it's totally unnecessary.
Episode fifteen, my favorite episode of this season, maybe of the past two seasons, actually. I'm a sucker for a bomb threat, and if you strap the bomb on the lead character's chest, even better lol. Even before that, it was already a good episode, because things that go boom are interesting, can you believe it? I liked the character of the minister too, although there is no way someone with that demeanor and those opinions would reach the point where they'd be a candidate of their party, especially if she was a woman. The scenes with Charlie and Rex while Charlie has the bomb vest on are given a huge boost by Sarah appearing and staying with them, something that I honestly didn't expect (I was fully expecting their biggest moment to be something like a phone call). And, of course, who can forget the fanfiction moment where the distorted voice of the bomber asks Charlie if Sarah is his wife. And that it was their anniversary too. They will never get a moment's peace, as it should be.
And absolute letdown that episode fifteen wasn't the last, and therefore the hundredth episode. Even worse because sixteen is an absolute filler of an episode, and no offense to Jesse, but having him investigate his first case solo (for like five minutes because then it turns out his and Charlie's cases are connected) is not what I want to see for the last episode, especially when said episode doesn't have much in terms of action scenes. Its best points was us seeing Jesse handling the procedural part of a detective's job well, singing a few verses, and the fact that the guest stars were pretty good. Also, it has an extra interest as an episode for Kevin Hanchard's directorial debut. This show has a real problem with season finales.
I wouldn't say I disliked many episodes in total. I'd ax or heavily edit the whales episode in a heartbeat if I could, and rearrange a few of the rest, but when you consider the season as a whole, especially with many good episodes in the second part of the season, it is pretty much like a standard Hudson and Rex season. Even after the season has ended, I can't say with certainty that they were indeed going for a more Charlie and Rex season or that it just so happened that the first few episodes had them handling cases that showed them more isolated from the team than usual.
The fact that no one, not from CityTV nor Shaftesbury or the other productions the names of which are always on the credits but never do anything to promote the show, even announced that Hudson and Rex had reached a hundred episodes is very disheartening, and it makes me even less hopeful that they'll even acknowledge the franchise's 30th anniversary this year. I saw two other shows celebrate their 100th episode this year (and one franchise celebrating 1000), and from all of them, Hudson and Rex is the only one that pretended like it was just a random episode. Maybe even they have lost count with the shuffling.
I'm more annoyed with the networks and the productions' actions (or inactions) to this show than anything else. They show a clear lack of interest and a "let's let them do their own thing and stay out of their way" attitude. Creative choices are being made which seem to not need to be okayed by anyone (unless, apparently, you're a lowly background actor). No one seems to check the scripts for errors. How in the world do you end up mistaking what continent a country is when you're trying to correct a racist character about not knowing where said country is? Even limiting the time Charlie and Sarah had severely in the first few episodes, if I was a showrunner, or a producer, I'd be like, wait a minute, these two had a lot more screentime together last season (part of which, understandably, was establishing their relationship and would not be repeated in each season), and they usually do have a lot of screentime whether as a couple or before that, what are we doing here?
One positive continuation from S5, at least Jesse's detective storyline was continued. On the other hand, I feel like we barely saw Joe this season? As for Sarah, some of the character's screentime will be linked to Charlie's now, which has advantages and disadvantages. And what was that storyline with her degree??? This is a real mystery. It wasn't done for either of the reasons I predicted at the start (needing to take a few episodes off, or linked to a bigger storyline, or even leading to her exiting the show, in fact they were pretty adamant about that and flat out had Sarah tell us in a scene). We didn't even see her graduate and I was given the impression that it was something she'd study for a few months only, so we should have seen her graduate by the end of the season.
I will probably write another (hopefully smaller) post about my expectations for season 7.

I liked..
The moments of domestic Charah at the beginning and end (and a little bit in the middle with Sarah bringing Charlie coffee too I guess.)
It was a decent team-focused episode.
I didn’t love…
The case. I don’t tend to love the overly techie ones, and as soon as I hear “bitcoin” my brain shuts off. And I had the culprits figured out way too quickly.
Also, would it have killed them to give us a tiny glimpse of Sarah’s house given Charlie and Rex were apparently staying there for two nights?
Tiny little touch I noticed…
Sarah’s (or Charlie’s? 🤣) pink fuzzy slippers on the shoe rack by the front door.

Chuck Fic Rec List: Updated
So my fic rec post was in my notifs again the other day, and I noticed a while back that the formatting on the post has gotten all messed up and it’s also had like three reblog additions to it anyway meaning there are three versions out there lol. so, I wanted to do another list of chuck fic recs! I’ll keep the other one up still, so I’m not gonna repeat every fic here, just some I really recommend. I’m also adding the fic summaries, which I didn’t on the old post, and some more of my own opinions so, buckle up for a long post!
Chuck Versus the Steampunk Chronicles | Steampunk.Chuckster
1896. A world powered by steam, where humans and machines coexist, and airships are the fashionable mode of transport. The US Empire's deepest and darkest secrets arrive at Chuck Bartowski's doorstep. Have they fallen into the wrong hands? Or will the inventor prove his mettle, even while he's forced to hide from the very people he's protecting? AU, ongoing chronicle, Charah.
A genuinely incredible AU story, with an entire crafted world and universe, so detailed it frequently blows my mind. There is heart and family and infuriatingly brilliant slow-burn, plus a buttload of danger and super fun historical/steampunk action. Oh how I LOVE it.
Chuck vs the Charade | somedeepmystery
When computer nerd Chuck Bartowski returns home to an empty apartment and a dead girlfriend he finds himself embroiled in a deadly game of espionage and deceit. Everyone around him is playing a part to get what they want and when he starts falling for the new woman in his life, he can't help but wonder if he can trust her or if she's the one he should fear the most.
An action and twist-filled AU based on the movie Charade, which is just such a brilliant fic concept I absolutely adored it from the start.
Two Sides of the Same Coin | dettiot
When you're a spy, there's all kinds of occupational hazards when you work with another spy. For Sarah Walker, though, one mission becomes a life-changing experience. Because working with Charles Carmichael leads to protecting Chuck Bartowski.
The first time I read this fic my mind was just blown to its genius. Such a brilliant interpretation of what the Intersect and its concepts set up in the show could be, and ooooof the Chuck/Sarah interactions, my HEART. Related to it, its companion piece:
A Flip of the Coin | dettiot
What made Charles Carmichael agree to become Chuck Bartowski? Well, to start, it wasn't as much of a change as you'd think. A companion to the early chapters of Two Sides of the Same Coin from Carmichael's perspective.
Chuck vs The Butterfly Effect | n7agentbartowski
Chuck Bartowski is a normal guy who just hit rock bottom. No girlfriend, no career and no super computer stuck inside his head. It isn't until Chuck meets a gorgeous stranger on the beach that he begins to think his life is about to change for the better. An AU Chuck fic without the Intersect. "Change one thing and it changes everything."
I said it on the OG post, but this story has one of my top 5 Chuck/Sarah fic meetings. So funny, so... very Chuck. The story is a little angsty overall, but a great read.
Chuck vs the Rogue Spy | Crumby
When a rogue spy from Chuck Bartowski's past shows up to help him during his first solo mission, Chuck hopes that he'll finally find out what happened to Sarah Walker. Post-S2 AU.
There’s a lot of Season 3 fix-it fics out there, which I don’t usually read bc I actually love season 3 lol, but this one’s a good one! A twisty deviation from canon, but still feels really true to character.
Chuck Versus the Nerds Rewrite | Steampunk.Chuckster and David Carner
What happens when two nerds talk endless hours about their favorite TV show? A new take on the show you know, but with the flair, twists, and turns you've come to expect from Steampunk . Chuckster and david . carner. Somewhat canon. Charah.
As the summary says, a different take on the show, which honestly makes a couple changes I would too, but also adds a bunch of fun twists and plots that make it totally new and fresh. Seeing Chuck and Sarah’s thoughts in the more canon sections is just delicious, too.
The Trapped Assassin | SarahsSupplyCloset
After a mission goes awry, the CIA's most lethal assassin is ordered to take vacation while her superiors figure out what to do with her. But when she meets a disarming tourist, their immediate connection only adds to her disillusionment with the agency and her career. Will he be enough for her to finally take the plunge and leave the only life she's ever known? Charah AU
A warning for the very justified M rating if you don’t like that sort of thing, but this is definitely a plot-heavy fic, too. A really neat Sarah-heavy AU, with a whole lotta Chuck/Sarah fancy French vacationy goodness.
Chuck vs the Second Chance | malamoo
AU from mid-season 2 and onwards. Chuck and Sarah part ways only to be reunited years later. COMPLETE.
Literal, crying-at-my-screen angst. Not even a super happy ending. But a brilliantly written, part-reflective/flashback fic, exploring what would’ve happened if Chuck and Sarah’s relationship really was an assignment all along-- and the aftermath. It’s heartbreaking. But if you want a little heartbreak, this is your fic.
Ready at Your Hand | dettiot
In the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, a Catholic plot against the queen comes to the attention of spymaster Sir Francis Walsingham. To protect Elizabeth, he develops an unusual plan: hide the passing of intelligence between two agents by a false romance. When Lady Sarah Walker and Chuck Carmichael meet, though, their pretend flirtation becomes much more.
I love Chuck fic for the very reason that it’s inspired such adventurous and totally unique AUs. Here’s some Elizabethan fake-dating Chuck and Sarah! They have to be so Proper, it’s like that hand moment from Pride and Prejudice but Elizabethan and times a billion. The pining!!
Sarah Versus Getting Married | Steampunk.Chuckster
Sarah Walker is getting married. Canon. Charah.
I’d recommend all of SC’s fics if I had the room, and I’m already recommending a ton sksks but most of my fic recs are AUs, and this one isn’t! It’s canon, and covers some of in the gap in 4x24, with Sarah just before the wedding itself. Super sweet, heart-tugging, brilliant.
A Chuckmas Carol | Mikki13
A new twist to Dickens' beloved "A Christmas Carol". When Sarah begins to shut out the world around her, three spirits come to show her the error of her ways. Season 3 AU.
Another Season 3 AU, this one written pre-series so it definitely doesn’t fit to canon, but it’s still wonderfully rich in character depth and angst and it also made me cry. Plus, festive!
Chuck Versus Thin Ice | Steampunk.Chuckster
On the doorstep of the Olympics, top American curler Sarah Walker has lost her mixed doubles partner and her boyfriend in one fell swoop. Her coaches throw newbie Team U.S.A. curler Chuck Bartowski onto her team and thrust them into the Olympics, hanging America's curling hopes on two people who only have a short amount of time to learn to trust one another. Charah AU.
Do you like curling? Or the Winter Olympics? It doesn’t really matter because somehow this fic made me extremely invested in both of those things, as well as Chuck and Sarah and them being INSUFFERABLE. Catch me now knowing a ton about curling thanks to this fic.
Walker’s Eleven | Moonlight Pilot
Not the same plot as the movie. Sarah Walker never got out of the con game or became a spy, and now she's on her final con. What happens when true love and betrayal get added to the mix? Twists, turns, and Jeffster!
Con!Sarah always interests me, and this fic is full of her. Lotta con plot, lotta Chuck and Sarah.
The Detective and the Tech Guy | thecharleses
Sarah Walker is a Pinkerton detective. Chuck Bartowski is an electronics genius. They wouldn't have met except for a case of mistaken identity and murder. Will the detective and the tech guy solve the mystery, distracted by the riddle in their own hearts? An homage to The Thin Man film series. Formerly co-written by Steampunk . Chuckster and dettiot, now ONLY Steampunk . Chuckster.
Everyone in this fic is so damn cool. There are so many martinis. But also great heart and family and like, standing up for who you love, and later also Chuck with Baby Clara content which frankly the show robbed us of. Also, PI!Sarah!!!
Gravity | Poetic4U
AU. Sarah makes a decision that altered her life forever.
This is just a one-shot, which many of these stories are not, so a good one if you don’t fancy a big read! Just because it’s short, though, doesn’t mean it’s lacking; a really awesome what-if AU, and heavy on the Chuck and Sarah.
A Yuletie Tale | Steampunk.Chuckster
Sarah Walker was dumped the day before Christmas Eve, and her Plus One at her work’s annual Christmas Eve Soiree is now officially a Plus Zero. Her best friend Ellie Bartowski has a solution to her problem, and Sarah finds she isn’t quite as sure about it as Ellie is. AU Christmas Charah.
I’m particularly in love with this fic because, instead of beginning with a meet-cute, it involves Chuck and Sarah already two years into a friendship-- Sarah is Ellie’s best friend. And she’s been crushing harrrd on Ellie’s brother. Also Chuck is in a tux. It’s pretty.
Set, Spike, Dive! | Frea O’Scanlin
Chuck never expected to even make it to the Olympics. Everything is working against him: he's too tall for a diver, too inexperienced for a medal, too much of a wildcard to really make his mark. But an unexpected meeting at the airport, some intriguing new friends, and a whirlwind romance on the sand just might set up London 2012 as the time of Chuck Bartowski's life.
A London 2012 AU, because why not. This is just a fun Olympic-y ride!
OTP (One True Pairing) Prompts | David Carner
A series of Prompts I found online about different times and places in Chuck and Sarah's life. Mostly AU, mostly one-shots. I assume mostly fluff, but I might get deep. I doubt it, it's me. Charah...ALWAYS (It says complete, but if an idea strikes me...)
If you’re not so into long stories, this fic is perfect. Individual set-ups and stories, all Chuck and Sarah, and all super cute. You could dip in and out and just pick a scenario you enjoy.
Chuck vs The Frontier | ninjaVanish
AU: Chuck was enjoying a simple life as a 19th century watchmaker until an encounter with a beautiful Secret Service agent thrust him into a world of intrigue and adventure he never wanted. But then, with Agent Walker around, it can't be all bad, can it?
This fic gets props for being historically-set but still including the Intersect. Again, a historical AU, so the pining!! the need to be Proper!!! But besides all that, there’s a lot of action fun as well.
Chuck Versus The Crosswalk: Remastered | WvonB
Will a last minute mission help our two favorite characters finally get together? This is the remastered version of my first story.
The original version of this fic is on my first list; this is the updated version! It’s not a complete AU, instead a story that diverges from canon, so if you’re more into canon characters and setting than a new AU scenario, this is a great fic for that.
Little Girls, Paper Wreaths, and Choc Chip Cookies | DanaPAH
Very AU: Sarah Walker is a single mother whose Christmas spirit needs a boost after a tough divorce. She isn't quite ready to go looking for romance, but her little daughter's affection for their new neighbor may lure it right to her doorstep, anyway.
An incredibly sweet AU one-shot where Chuck and Sarah are new neighbours, and Sarah has a super cute little girl. So much sweetness and love and hope. I love this fic so much it literally led me to write my own neighbour-kid-AU, so, not to toot my own horn but I’ll link it here anyway.
May Your Walls Know Joy | halfachance
Looking for a fresh start after some tough times, Sarah and her three-year-old daughter move to LA. When they meet a sweet curly-haired nerd who lives next door, though, Sarah realizes they might just find more happiness than they'd ever imagined, if only her past doesn't catch up to her first. AU.
It’s what the summary says; if you wanna read, feel free!
Chuck vs the Sound of Music | quistie64
AU. Chuck, nerd extraordinaire, is a man with seven children and Sarah must protect them all from Fulcrum's evil designs. Warning: there will be singing.
I mean. Not much mystery as to the concept with that title and summary lol, but this is a super fun, soft ride with a lotta sweetness, and yes, singing.
Just Two People | David Carner
Meet Sarah Walker PhD, Psychologist, specializing in personality traits. Meet Chuck Bartowski, man who has left THE electronic company of 2020. When Burton Consultants tries to figure out what is wrong with the morale of Orion Industries, what happens when a guy named Chuck meets a woman named Sarah. I'll give you a hint, it's me writing.
David’s done something pretty special with this fic. It’s Chuck and Sarah centric, but very much an ensemble piece, too, with a lot of Team Bartowski and other familiar faces throughout.
Chuck Versus the Con Game | Steampunk.Chuckster
AU. Chuck and Sarah are partners in the con game. It's an existence wrought with danger and violence. Every day could be their last. Every mission could be the end of the line.
This is where I freak out SC and declare this fic the reason I ever got hooked on Chuck fic and then wrote Chuck fic, and the reason I still love it today but. that is true lol. Just so. so good. It’s also written with the chapters out of chronological order, which is super fun from a reading perspective. But con!Sarah AND con!Chuck?? Best. The kind of fic you will be thinking about for days (if not, y’know, years).
As you can tell by the repeats, I highly recommend just about anything by Steampunk.Chuckster, dettiot, or David Carner, but there are a TON of amazing Chuck fics and authors out there. I’ve never known a writing community so wildly creative-- there are so many unique AUs and canon explorations and story concepts that this show has manifested, and it’s all so much fun.
Most of the Chuck fic community is still over on FFN rather than AO3, so if any of these whet your appetite, feel free to have a browse there for more stories. I’m sure you’ll find something great. Personally, all the incredible writing there has also led me to write a buttload; I’m at halfachance on FFN, so if you see any of my stuff or wanna chat fic, feel free to message me there or here.
Happy reading, folks!
