Grimm Variations - Episode Three Review: Hansel and Gretel
(Buckle up, everyone, this is the call-back episode.)
Hansel and Gretel live a pretty routine, gray life at their orphanage/boarding school, with their fellow classmates and their mama and papa- wait a fucking second, that's Sakura's great-grandfather from Card Captor Sakura!
Jesus Christ, CLAMP, I know designing old men isn't your wheelhouse, but that's no excuse to be lazy! Anyways, their life is pretty boring and restricted, so Gretel usually acts out and Hansel gets swept up until they're both grounded. Finally, one time after too many antics, their "parents" decide to spice up the punishment by leaving them to sleep outside in the forest. They're warned that they can sleep near the fence if they want to, but of course that's too boring for Gretel, so they go on a walk until they find a small wooden cottage, although it does have two ca- Yuuko.
...
I never really finished XxxHolic. I only watched the two seasons of the anime, so I didn't really experience Yuuko's death, I just spoiled myself. Still, it gets me unexpectedly emotional. To see a version of her blessed with the ability to age.
So the Dimensional Witch and the kids get to talking around some cocoa, and Yuuko incites the kids to find out about The End of the World. Her words, not mine. That's silly! reply Hansel and Gretel, the world doesn't have an end, it's spherical! They would know, they've been taught a lot of suspiciously advanced scientific stuff in school. So Yuuko proposes them to do a little empirical research to settle the debate. Next time someone loses a ball during a game they should go pick it up themselves, instead of letting their "parents" get to it first. Hansel does that at the first opportunity he gets and indeed, he finds a forcefield, proving Yuuko correct.
This discovery sparks a fire in Hansel, so he gets himself deliberately sent out to the forest again and Gretel does the same to accompany him. He reaches a bargain with Yuuko: she'll help him discover what's real and in return he will help her grant her own unspoken wish. She tells him to look for unusual things in his school and gifts him a tube filled with what could be candies or gems, saying that they'll help guide the way, but to not eat them or they'll run out of it.
Hansel and Gretel start paying attention to their surroundings and finally the weirdness of their situation starts to stand out to them, like how their classmates keep disappearing out of nowhere and nobody bats an eye, especially when there's photographic evidence about their numbers dwindling in the school group pictu- Syaoran.
And 2/3 of the Clamp School Detectives!
I find it hilarious that Nokoru and Akira are here, but Suoh had to be deleted from existence because his blue hair would've stood out too much. RIP, lmao.
Anyways, Hansel decides to try to see if he can find a way out through the forest and obviously his sister goes along with him. Before they can properly set out, however, one of the candies acts up and opens up a portal. The siblings go through it and they find themselves in a mysterious space station of all things, with data of all of their classmates. Soon enough their "mother" finds them sneaking around and they run away from her, using up the candies to open doors. But when Hansel almost gets squished by a closing door, Mother sacrifices herself to save him, confirming to everyone that she is, in fact, a robot.
Naturally, this leaves Hansel with more questions than answers, so after coming back to the school he and his sister straight to Yuuko, who gives him the Matrix choice of taking a pill to forget everything or learning the truth. Hansel chooses the latter and Yuuko takes them back to the space station, explaining that the earth has long since become inhabitable and that the school is teaching the children how to restore it until they deem them fit to go there. Her previously mentioned "wish" is to send them all safely there. Hansel is apparently fit to travel already, but he starts dithering about the choice, especially because the space shuttle only has one seat, so where is Gretel to fit?
That's when the curtain is lifted: Gretel doesn't exist. She's a mental projection for cowardly, dithering Hansel to act out decisively on his own impulses while mentally excusing himself for following along, but now that he has come this far on his own accord he doesn't need her anymore. Hansel, with Gretel's encouragement, chooses to leave, but he still cries tears of bitter regret at loosing his "sister" to the truth instead of taking Yuuko's offer to forget.
Alas, however, he arrives at earth, where his lost classmates have grown up and welcome him with open arms. Yuuko eulogizes the mom-bot, congratulating her for raising the kids and then welcomes Syaoran to her hut...
Oh boy, ok, this one's a doozy, let's see where to start.
Ok, I'm gonna start with the blatant Revolutionary Girl Utena references and work up from there, because if I don't it's gonna drive me insane. Here's the thing people, it's not a sin to reference RGU; in fact I'd encourage it, but if you're gonna pull iconography from there of all places, then you'd better be really fucking conscientious about The Themes™️ and what you say with them.
So this episode presents us with a school in which time is apparently bubbled, constricted by The End of The World it represents, supervised by two figures emulating the heteronormative family structure, contrasted by a witch who at first seems like an outcast but is actually essentially powering the whole thing (maybe), and where students disappear without anyone properly remembering them because if they dare to figure out what lies behind the curtain of the system, just like Ohtori Academy. So far so good... kind of.
The implication is that the school is deliberately set up as this secret test of character thing so, like Hansel, the students learn to be independent. There's even some clever hints that disobedience and figuring out the mystery gives them the passing mark before we watch our protagonist. But then like... why do the students forget whenever one of them leaves? In Utena that's implied to be the magic of whatever time bubble Ohtori is in keeping everyone ignorant to perpetuate itself without objections, but more important that the explanation itself is the metaphor it's in service of. Ohtori students forget because the system wants to present a narrative about itself without any blemishes, so tragedies get trivialized into gossip, victims swept under the rug. Even if you assume that this schools timeloop or whatever is also passively mindfucking with the children, why is there so much focus on the dadbot and especially the mombot keeping things like the forcefield hidden? What is the purpose of that? What commentary is it making? What does breaking the cycle of apathy and blind obedience mean in this setting?
It might sound like I'm doing a pointless nitpick here, but trust me when I say that the viewing experience is already too confusing because of the tone and its use of the imagery. The school really is portrayed like if Othori met the orphanage from The Promised Neverland met an oscarbait period flick about world war II. Like, you genuinely expect that the twist is that the school is farming the children for their brains or something. It took me until I was writing this review to actually put the pieces together as to what the robo-parents motivations are, because their secrecy and strictness is completely antithetical to them wanting the children to grow independent!!!
The truth of the matter is just too soft for the themes its exploring and the imagery is presenting. Hansel created Gretel because he's afraid of taking responsibility for his actions, the same way a character in Utena projected a Rose Bride to not acknowledge the fact that he killed like a 100 people in a fire on purpose. So one would assume, based on how fucking creepy the school and the parents are, that he has some real good fucking reason to reach that extreme of cognitive dissonance, but no!!!!! Even the parents sending them out to sleep in the forest lands like mere chiding!!!!
But going back to Gretel, the usual initial portion of the episode is about how Charlotte doesn't seem to like her character in the original fairytale. How she thinks Gretel should be punished for getting Hansel into trouble which... istg I have NO idea how this show is trying to engage with its source material at all, because that is NOT a conclusion anyone would reach after reading the fucking fairytale, but whatever. It's fine. Or rather it WOULD be fine if there was a smidge of actual feminist commentary in this script which goes OUT OF ITS WAY TO REFERENCE ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL FEMINIST PIECES IN ANIME, but noooooooooooo it's all so bittersweet. On the one hand I'm glad he chose to grow up, and since I don't believe in punitive justice I don't think he needs to be punished to get there, but I'm still upset the character of Gretel gets reduced to this when she was an active heroine in her own story. Guess Charlotte succeeded in her purpose then, although it is curious that she casts herself as the twins.
Like, am I evil for expecting Hansel to straight up die in that oven-shuttle? In her original universe, Yuuko was an agent of karma. If she was scary it wasn't because she was evil, but because she would give you exactly what you want and not shield you from the consequences. It would feel weird to me if she were to endanger children the way she does some of her customers, but it would not have been completely out of place in this "grimm variation" that is about our protagonist literally deluding himself to avoid taking responsibility for his choices to end up with those consequences catching up to him in a terrible fashion.
Guess I shouldn't have expected all that much better. Although I am surprised that they didn't just straight up turn Subaru and Hokuto from Tokyo Babylon into Hansel and Gretel. Alas, to be a CLAMP fan is to suffer, and it seems that these past 20 years have not taught them much about theming. This is why I'm still terrified of reading Clear Card Arc, even though I should.

How to Manage Time During IAS Preparation: A Comprehensive Guide
Time management is one of the important skills an aspirant needs during IAS preparation. The journey to becoming an IAS officer requires extensive preparation, long study hours, and balancing of multiple responsibilities. Effective time management can ensure success or failure in this highly competitive examination. In this blog, we look at ways and tips on how one should manage their time to get the most appropriate results out of studying for the IAS while living a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
Time Management - Understanding Its Importance Time management becomes crucial for IAS preparation because it enables a candidate to get adequate time for covering the vast syllabus, thorough revision, and efficient practice of questions. Poor time management leads to incomplete preparations, more stress, and a lower success rate. A well-planned schedule of time management prioritizes the work, allows the aspirant to set realistic goals, and helps him or her consistently study.
Detailed Study Plan A good study plan forms the backbone of effective time management. Here's how to set about making one:
Evaluate Your Present Schedule: Start off by evaluating exactly how you spend your time at present. Identify blocks of time that you can devote to studying, without distractions.
Set clear goals about IAS preparation, like covering a certain number of chapters or doing a certain amount of mock tests within a specific time period.
Break the Syllabus: Break the whole IAS syllabus into small fragments and mark the time slots for each topic. Make sure all the subjects are prepared, starting from General Studies to Optional Subjects and Current Affairs.
Daily and Weekly Schedules: Plan a daily and weekly schedule of studying, including reading, writing, revision, and time for relaxation. Allow for more time in areas where you need greater concentration.
Incorporate Flexibility: While it is good to follow your schedule, plan some flexibility to accommodate unexpected events or added study needs.
Prioritize Tasks Efficiently Good prioritizing insures that you are doing the most important tasks first. Here is how to prioritize:
Concentrate on High-Impact Activities: Among these, mention those activities that create the most impact in your IAS preparation. For instance, understanding key concepts and solving previous years' papers are more critical than less important activities.
Apply Eisenhower Matrix: Segment the activities into four quadrants of tasks-either urgent or not urgent and either important or not important-in order to decide which tasks to focus on first.
Set Deadlines: Set a deadline for every task so that you have the urge to finish tasks and can measure your progress. Deadlines are helpful in building a sound and organized method of accomplishing tasks.
Optimize Sessions Here's how you can optimize study sessions:
Pomodoro Technique: One very helpful technique is the Pomodoro Technique. What you do in this technique is you work in 25-minute blocks. Do four rounds and take an extended break of 15-30 minutes after that.
Active learning techniques include summarizing information, teaching concepts to someone else, and practicing questions. Active learning goes a long way in enhancing retention and understanding of the material.
Avoid Multitasking: Try to focus on one task at a time for better quality of study. Multitasking decreases concentration and results in inefficient learning.
Review and Revise: Regularly review and revise previously studied material to help retain information in memory and enhance its recall. Give specific times to revision in your study plan.
Balance of Study and Personal Life A balance between study and personal life should be maintained in order to get long-term productivity along with good mental health. Here's how one can keep a balance:
Set a limit: Clearly mention your study time and separate it from personal time. The time meant for studying should not spill over to the time you need to rest or catch up with friends.
Include Breaks: Make sure that you go out regularly to reinstate your energy levels. Hobbies and other forms of recreation are very good ways to de-stress your self and keep your concentration levels higher.
Exercise and Nutrition: Incorporate physical exercises and maintain healthy nutrition. Routine exercises ensure that concentration is enhanced while reducing stress levels. Proper nutrition helps in feeding the brain.
Good Night's Sleep: Have proper sleep every night. Proper sleep is very important to nurture the memory and mind.
Making Effective Utilization of Resources Make use of the different resources to make the best of your preparation.
Join a Renowned Coaching Institute: You may join any reputed coaching institute for a structured approach, guidance, and expert advice. For example, you may join any TNPSC coaching center in Coimbatore.
Develop the habit of reading quality study materials and resources, such as books, online courses, and mock tests. Ensure that the study materials are updated and relevant to the current pattern of the IAS exam.
Mentorship: Find mentors or IAS officers for advice. The experiences and insights shared give one valuable tips and motivation.
Join Study Groups: Study groups or forums help discuss concepts, solve doubts, and share resources. The most apparent advantages of collaborative learning are tremendous understanding and motivation.
Track and Revise Your Plan Reflect upon your progress from time to time and make necessary adjustments to your plan:
Monitor your progress: Note down how many hours you study every day, how much work you've completed, and whether you achieve your goals. Use planners, apps, or journals for tracking purposes.
Review and Adjust: Regularly go through your study plan and make adjustments according to your progress, any received feedback, and changes in requirements.
Stay Adaptable: Be flexible in changing your study methods or time schedules when necessary. Flexibility is the prime factor that comes with effective time management.
Conclusion Time management, therefore, plays a crucial role in IAS preparation and will bring a huge difference in the results. You can manage time more effectively by making an accurate study plan, prioritizing the work, improving studying time, balancing study and personal life, using resources effectively, and assessing performance regularly to enhance your chances of clearing the IAS exam. Remember, a well-structured approach to time management will help you stay focused, reduce stress, and achieve your goals more effectively.
If you are looking for further assistance, then join any TNPSC coaching center in Coimbatore because there you can get professional advice in terms of systematic preparation. In the right strategies and facilities, this IAS preparation journey will be confident and successful.

Literature Review: The Essential Rationality of Male Violence and Violent Rhetoric: Why the Patriarchy Needs Andrew Tate -- New York Magazine Feature: Tate-Pilled
[Note: this post was drafted in March and does not include updates from the last two months. all emphasis is mine.]
You're living in your own world, where love is all synthetic [...] Yeah, poor little [boy]. Cries [his] eyes out, it's all part of the show. -- G-Eazy, Downtown Love [edited]
Tate-Pilled attempts to hone in on the evil that is Andrew Tate and his appeal to teenage boys. It's very comprehensive. However, I disagree with the premise that devotees of Tate are victimized by feminism and anti-racism and therefore cannot be blamed.
Tate-Pilled relies on a familiar litany in which boys, especially white boys, are constructed as infantile, vulnerable, and in need of validation and protection, lest they take violent and justified revenge when they reach manhood.
Likewise, Andrew Tate himself is constructed in a similarly sympathetic manner, despite the many descriptions of his callous, sadistic, and [allegedly] criminal behavior.
Miller [the author] suggests that Tate's 'barbarism' [her word, not mine] is simply a learned behavior and a rational, or at least, expected response to his experiences. Like the best and most sopping-wet pathetic little meow-meow of Tumblr's own beloved fictional male villains, Tate had a troubled childhood. His Black father was a paragon of the masculinity Tate portrays now -- gambling, drinking, womanizing, and left young Tate with his white mother, blaming her for the collapse of their family [It's a little Othello and Desdemona for my taste]. It's implied the combination of his parents' divorce and growing up poor soured him against all women, instilled in him both severe daddy issues, an adoration for toxic masculinity, and a ravenous hunger for wealth and fame.
As a poor kid in the council flats, Tate would see men driving Ferraris and become enraged that they seemed to be flaunting possessions he could not afford. Things would be different when he became “rich rich.” From Emory, the chess master, Tate seemed to have learned to see human existence as a battlefield with winners and losers, men and bitches, kings and “brokies.”
[Tate frequently alludes to metaphorical battles, and sigh, the 1999 film The Matrix, itself a metaphor for battle between truth and lies]
Tate is portrayed here not even as unstable and tragic, but as the rational outcome of a boy deprived of material wealth and his father. Whether intentional or not, Miller falls into a common pitfall to nearly all cultures -- a belief in the inevitability of male violence, one which almost always holds someone else responsible for a man's acts of violence, whether it's the system for not coddling him, women for not fucking him, or his parents for not teaching him to be a good man.
It wasn't always this way. The Ancient Greeks (misogynistic as they were, especially in Athens) valued small penises and sexual restraint as evidence of the essential rationality of men. Somewhere along the way, the cultural narrative has changed from 'men are always rational' to 'whatever men do is rational.'
In Miller's narrative, Tate's coming-of-age-story is paralleled, unsurprisingly, by that of his followers. However, these 21st century boys are not motivated by a broken home or a lack of material wealth, but instead and perhaps more insidiously, a system that is said to war against their very nature. These boys are facing feminism which has gone too far, anti-racism which has swung into reverse racism, and gay and gender-non-conforming men who stand to destroy all that is good and great about masculinity [shh, don't tell anyone tell them about Achilles and his *good friend* Patroclus].
In 2019, in an opposite corner of the internet, the YouTuber Natalie Wynn made a 30-minute video titled Men. Wynn is a transgender philosopher and commentator on gender politics, and she posted the video on her channel, ContraPoints, which has 1.65 million subscribers. In it, she lays out with surgical delicacy the ways she thinks feminists have failed to address what some now call “the masculinity crisis.” [...] But in Men, Wynn gently asks her progressive viewers to consider the possibility that men’s-rights activists’ concerns contain a nugget of truth: that the suffering of men is real, especially among those who were never high on any kind of ladder. Much feminist theory accounts for this, but many online feminists don’t. “Maybe the average man is also oppressed by the system the feminists call patriarchy,” Wynn says.
What the article neglects to mention is that Wynn is the child of a professor and a doctor, attended prestigious universities and started a PhD before becoming bored and dropping out. Wynn, firmly ensconced in the upper middle class, is very much part of the 'liberal elite.' Wynn has more in common with Elon Musk, fellow PhD dropout, than the average prole.
No one, feminists included, purports that no man has struggled ever, whether it's because of race, sexual orientation, disability, poverty, mental health, et cetera. However, no man suffers by virtue of being a man. Those who are 'never high on any kind of ladder' are not suffering by virtue of being men but for something else. For example, the suffering I experience by being a Black woman does not mean that I experience heterophobia because I happen to be straight and am suffering. I've suffered due to mental health, too, and also the general stresses of life, which escape no one. It's strange how we've all forgotten about the concept of intersectionality and instead try to pretend that women are hysterical and delusional, being the inherently irrational beings that we are and that, for example, white women having power over Black men in some instances means that patriarchy is as real as a dream on a dinner of bad cheese.
Andrew Tate isn't the first, and won't be the last, to seize on 'male suffering' as a rallying cry for violence. Suzanne Collins once described humans as “fickle, stupid beings with poor memories and a great gift for self-destruction,” and I fear she's right. Have we forgotten the translation of Mein Kampf (My Struggle)?
I rather dislike drawing parallels between disenfranchised groups lest it seem too much like a comparison, but I find the resemblances in the rhetoric eerie. Hitler's autobiography glorifies suffering, and how he claims it turned him into a genocidal anti-Semite (as well as xenophobic against the 'wrong kind' of white people). Mein Kampf is a tale of radicalization, of how Hitler claims he went from liberal to fascist.
One feels it again when one sees his photographs—and I recommend especially the photograph at the beginning of Hurst and Blackett’s edition, which shows Hitler in his early Brownshirt days. It is a pathetic, dog-like face, the face of a man suffering under intolerable wrongs. In a rather more manly way it reproduces the expression of innumerable pictures of Christ crucified, and there is little doubt that that is how Hitler sees himself. The initial, personal cause of his grievance against the universe can only be guessed at; but at any rate the grievance is here. He is the martyr, the victim, Prometheus chained to the rock, the self-sacrificing hero who fights single-handed against impossible odds. If he were killing a mouse he would know how to make it seem like a dragon. One feels, as with Napoleon, that he is fighting against destiny, that he can’t win, and yet that he somehow deserves to.
-- George Orwell's review of Mein Kampf (1940)
Further, Mein Kampf also displays a sneering attitude to what present-day manosphere influencers would refer to as 'beta males' and soy boys.
Hitler, because in his own joyless mind he feels it with exceptional strength, knows that human beings don’t only want comfort, safety, short working-hours, hygiene, birth-control and, in general, common sense; they also, at least intermittently, want struggle and self-sacrifice, not to mention drums, flags and loyalty-parades. After a few years of slaughter and starvation ‘Greatest happiness of the greatest number’ is a good slogan, but at this moment ‘Better an end with horror than a horror without end’ is a winner. Now that we are fighting against the man who coined it, we ought not to underrate its emotional appeal.”
-- George Orwell's review of Mein Kampf (1940)
All this to say, I think Orwell was right and still is. Hitler didn't invent the glorification of a manhood of misery any more than Tate did. No wonder Tate and his ilk eschew soft fuzzy things like bubble baths, vegan diets, socialized healthcare, and makeup for men. The cultural script of the ideal man as a suffering, Christ-like warrior is incredibly pervasive, and that's partially why boys love Tate so much. He speaks a message that's subtly woven into our cultural cloth.
As Trumpers love to say when explaining their love for Trump, "He says out loud what we're all thinking but too afraid to say."
On a private jet, Tate taunts his brother, Tristan, for eating sushi. Eating “rice in a circle” will make men weak, Tate says, whereas his meal, fried chicken, makes men strong. “You know who eats sushi? Little fucking soy boys. Little fucking Democrats.”
I can't help but wonder if the distaste for protein sources that aren't meat amongst MRAs, specifically tofu and other soy-based products, is perhaps racist given that these are traditional foods in many Asian countries as well as the requisite anti-veganism (caring about the planet and cows is soft and fuzzy and therefore self-destructive).
The insistence that "boys don't cry" and "men are tough" isn't oppression. It's ensuring, and even grooming boys to grow into their roles as stoic oppressors. If we don't insist that they behave like they're meant to be on top of the food chain, they might decide they prefer a 'beta' life of veganism, cat-owning, and respecting women. The castration anxiety we manufacture in boys is the price they pay in order to benefit from patriarchy later on.
Tate’s saturation was so complete that he reached into the blue villages of New York City, where many boys in their bedrooms found his rude and ruthless evisceration of every sacred liberal value hilarious. Feminism, environmentalism, gluten intolerance, literature, Harry Styles, Lil Nas X — Tate assaulted all of these with pejoratives the boys themselves knew not to use.
Despite her best efforts to be 'fair', Miller describes a Tate who is not appealing to a disenfranchised class, but to those who aspire to bully whatever and whomever is not sufficiently male and therefore subhuman. 'Repeal the 19th' (the amendment which gave women the right to vote in the U.S.) is not the rallying cry of a disenfranchised group, but those who wish others (women) would quietly go back to being disenfranchised.
He told the boys they were naturally programmed to want to acquire wealth and to compete to become what he calls “top-tier men” and that, as men, they were evolutionarily superior to women — more rational, better drivers, better leaders. Most of the fans knew better, but that was the funny part: They concede it gave them an illicit boost. If you’re a teenage boy and feeling misunderstood, “it’s helpful to hear I’m meant to be stronger than a lot of my peers, that I’m meant to be better, bigger,” says Jacob, a senior at a public high school in Brooklyn. “It’s appealing to think that you’re more rational than 50 percent of the population, just because.”
There's no secret, no trick to his appeal. Tate makes men and boys feel powerful, just for existing. His rhetoric proves a high that they can't get enough of, one that they begin to feel entitled to.
Furthermore, the peeks at Tate's rhetoric that Miller includes, the more one wonders -- how can anyone who didn't enter with a total callousness for women and girls find this funny? To anyone with the barest shred of empathy, Tate's comments are sickening and enraging. However, in greater society, female-directed violence (despite the adorable videos of little boys insisting that it's wrong to hit girls) is a joke, and every boy knows the punchline.
Men often say in half-hearted defense, I don't think Andrew Tate is that bad. He's a bit distasteful, he's a bit sexist, yeah, but I don't think he's that bad. I can see you're really concerned, but it's not such a big deal, yeah?
Christian [who is, admittedly, 12] regards the Tate panic as a misunderstanding: “He makes a lot of jokes, and people take him out of context.” He sees Tate as “a little misogynist but not much much.”
The context, of course, is a culture that accepts and rewards misogyny.
To many guys, Tate's that friend who gets a bit sexist, a bit callous, a bit rapey after a couple of drinks. To many guys, they'd never do that stuff their crazy friend does, but that's just him. Many guys see Tate as a spectacle, a character, the circus, pure camp, no different from a particularly wild episode of RuPaul's Drag Race or the 'Birds Aren't Real' guy.
He is a character, but he is also Tate, and in interviews, he claims that he’s joking and that he’s dead serious.
They don't think his behavior is a threat to anyone's safety. After all, his only victims are women, who aren't really that important.
I'm an irrational woman, you see, affronted because I don't believe in the inevitability of male violence. I, and every woman who is disgusted by Tate, has refused to get the memo. How would we understand the joke? How on earth would we get the punchline? Women aren't funny.
[The joke, for many, is not how ridiculous Tate looks in this still.]
The joke: women are objects, and you can own them. The joke: women are scum. The joke: women deserve abuse. Et cetera. Ad nauseam.
And when women get angry, when woman swear up a storm and curse and accuse Tate and the manosphere of spreading dangerous rhetoric and normalizing violence against us, we're irrational, because with the inevitability of male violence comes the inevitability of female complacency. Women are supposed to be happy to be abused, or, at least, neutral. To rail against misogyny is to break the paradigm, and what lies underneath isn't pretty.
Given the tribalism of teenagers, I can only imagine that whichever boy in the friend group displays an initial queasiness towards Tate is told to suck it up and join his friends in what they believe is a glorious journey into manhood, facilitated by leaving their mothers' arms and being transmuted by the transformational and ancient power of woman-hating.
The process of dehumanizing a group as a way to legitimize and justify cruelty against its individual members is not something that porn producers invented. It has been a tried and trusted method adopted by many oppressors [...] Once the humanness of these individuals is collectively rendered invisible by their membership in a socially denigrated group, then it is that much easier to commit acts of violence against them.
-- Gail Dines, Pornland
Tate world is a bit like Pornland. In Tate world, the story is that women deserve abuse for refusing anything men desire [submission]. He advises 'disciplining' women for perceived misbehavior in the same way that one might smack the TV in irritation when it's not working properly -- although one would likely have more care for a pricey flatscreen than Tate has for women. If a dog owner treated their dog the way Tate recommends treating women, we'd call it animal abuse.
And yet, his young watchers laugh.
Boys entered Tate world through his most arresting clips — including those that suggest a violent hatred of women. In one TikTok that circulated untold millions of times, he describes what he would do as a pimp if a woman accused him of cheating: “Slap slap grab choke shut up bitch sex,” he said. [...] He had compared women to dogs and children. He said he preferred to have sex with 18- and 19-year-olds because they’ve “been through less dick.” He even appeared to endorse sexual slavery, once insisting on the Dave Portnoy podcast that a woman in a relationship “belongs” to the man, “and the intimate parts of her body belong to him.” [...] “Women have to want to work for you. Women have to want to obey you,” he explained. Tate compares himself to someone who “uses sex as a weapon” and a “reward.” [...] Tate said he had no use for a challenging woman. “All men want robots!” he insisted. “There’s no such thing as too submissive.” He seemed to be laughing, and his hosts, off balance, laughed along.
The distaste for a challenging woman and desire to punish her exorbitantly is unsurprising to anyone who's read Genesis, which tells the tale of a woman who failed to submit, a husband who obeyed his wife, and the destruction of Paradise. Misogyny is women's eternal punishment for disobedience. According to the Old Testament, men listened to us once, and it ruined everything.
And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it [...] -- Genesis 3:15-17, KJV
A warning to all would-be feminists, if you will. Even in the so-called secular West, we cannot escape this notion -- that woman-hating and women's perceived inferiority is divinely ordained. Tate is referred to as 'Top G[angster]', but his followers see him as no less than a god, sending down truths that match our worst cultural norms. Tate-ism is a religion.
[These two lines in the Quran are in fact directed towards Allah.]
What's even more telling about that last quote from Tate in the indent, is the wording. "He had no use." A woman who dissents, even once in a while, is decidedly not an object, and thus cannot be used.
'No' is an uncomfortable proposition, and despite his glorification of struggle, Tate wants his suffering to be exclusively self-inflicted.
Just like snow-struck damsel-in-distress Kai in that lovely, fuzzy fairytale The Snow Queen (who becomes a raging misanthrope until he's rescued by his female friend), Tate's cold heart knows no love, no empathy, no compassion, no kindness. A human woman is of little 'use' to him.
The only good woman is a yes-woman. The only way a woman can be rational is if she is parroting everything a man says. Tate's supposed 'girlfriend' Sofiya epitomizes this as the ultimate NLOG meets traditional femininity.
On her Twitter, Sofiya posts endless tweets expressing love, loyalty, and support for Andrew Tate and his brother and attempting to 'disprove' the claims of human trafficking, even as the daughter of a Romanian MP comes forward, along with the occasional anti-LGBTQ or anti-vax messages, along with a undercurrent of white supremacy (she's also anti-seed oils. I did not know that was a thing before now).
The appeal to teenage boys is obvious: wealth, fame, Bugattis, and a beautiful yes-woman who worships at his feet. In one of Sofiya's Tiktoks, the camera cuts between her staring adoringly up at Tate and Tate, expression obscured by his dark sunglasses utterly still and stoic. Sofiya is perfectly submissive towards him, just how Tate likes his women. The message is clear. Top G is demigod-prophet, and to be Tate-Pilled is to be one of his holy disciples. Time and time again, humans (especially men) are shown to be highly susceptible to magical, religious thinking. This is beyond mere-celebrity worship.
Sofiya's worship at the altar of Tate and performance of ideal womanhood has garnered her perhaps not respect but praise, validation, and effusive compliments from fellow Tate fans.
[ad nauseam]
Despite the overall negative responses of women and girls to Tate (As Miller says, "Girls hate Tate."), his followers have convinced themselves that despite making up a majority, dissenters don't matter by using the age-old smack-down to tell women they don't matter: 'You're ugly.' In this paradigm, beauty is seen as an indication of a woman's inner virtuousness -- here, her adherence to ideals such as submission.
Unsurprisingly, this isn't new or inventive.
[The ugly suffragette vs the beautiful and virtuous ideal woman.]
Ironically, the reason Sofiya (and a few other women) slavishly follows Tate is for the same reason men and boys do: for the endless gravy train of validation. Tate's boys are Not Like Other Boys (NLOB), not like the betas or the cucks or the simps or the white knights or the soyboys. By following 'Top G,' you, too, can become one of the chosen ones.
Many insist that becoming a devotee of Tate alleviates depression as is an excellent form of self-help. Despite this, Tate is not good for teenage boys, and the more self-aware ones know it.
When he was about 13, he spent 18 months down the alt-right rabbit hole before he pulled himself out. Jacob thinks Tate’s influence on young men is “horrible.” ... “Hate begets hate begets hate,” Jacob tells me. ... It’s a kind of arrogance, or at least a misapprehension, to believe that you can take the good without the bad, two different boys told me. One put it this way: “They think they’re taking the valuable stuff and leaving the garbage. But I don’t think they’re successful. People are much more susceptible than they like to think they are.”
Even though Tater Tots believe that no one can tell what their current media consumption habits are, women and girls pick up on the shift in rhetoric often enough.
Besides Tate's chilling rhetoric, there are also his actions.
[...] A sex tape [...] shows Tate hitting a woman with a belt. In the tape, Tate, kneeling in bed fully clothed, demands that the woman say she loves him before he pounces on her and begins thrashing her. (The woman later made a video saying it had been “pure game” and they were still friends.) Seven years later, the real reason for Tate’s removal would come to light: At around the time of the Big Brother taping, one of the women he hired had charged him with rape and another with assault. [...] Two days later, Tate and Tristan were jailed in Romania. They purportedly lured women to that country, then persuaded or forced them to work for their OnlyFans operation, “transform[ing] them into slaves,” according to Romanian prosecutors’ documents viewed by Reuters. In these documents, a Moldovan woman accused Tate of raping her twice and an American woman said she had been kept in a house manned by armed guards, her movements tracked by video cameras. (In addition to the accusations of human trafficking, organized crime, and rape, Romanian authorities said they are investigating the Tates for money laundering.
-
I've come across a few male social media influencers who promote a kind of 'third way' dudespace that's less reliant on the misogynistic cliches. The Good Men Project comes to mind.
Guys today are neither the mindless, sex-obsessed buffoons nor the stoic automatons our culture so often makes them out to be. Our community is smart, compassionate, curious, and open-minded; they strive to be good fathers and husbands, citizens and friends, to lead by example at home and in the workplace, and to understand their role in a changing world. -- The Good Men Project About Page
Despite this, I've never heard of groups of teenage boys going for these types of blogs or influencers. Is it because of the unfamiliarity of the rhetoric? There seems to be a consensus that masculinity without violence is somehow neuter.
Yet, there remains a pervasive 'counterargument' that boys only become swept up in the manosphere because of a lack of good male role models.
[Jimmy Gomez (D-CA)'s Dads Caucus, 2023]
Many would protest that Jimmy Gomez is too beta (soft, fuzzy, socialist) and not very masculine (warrior, struggle, suffering) in this picture to be someone for young boys to look up to -- despite sitting in the U.S. House of Representatives, a position of immense power in the grand scheme of things. The problem isn't a lack of male role models who aren't foaming at the mouth with dangerous and violent rhetoric, it's the belief that the death of unnecessary struggle and violence is the death of men. For men to be men it is essential to patriarchy that they possess at least the threat of violence.
If a single generation of men collectively decided women are rational people who deserve empathy, misogyny is depraved, and struggle and suffering are nothing to strive for, there might be an end in sight. That's why patriarchy needs men like Tate.
#bso glad people are talking about this#but the mainstream discourse is too shallow#tw andrew tate#i'm so sorry about the jumpscare in the middle#wrote this literally 1 year ago#misogyny

Man of Tai Chi (2013) review
Summary: Keanu Reeves’ directorial debut tells the tale of a highly skilled martial artist, who rebels against his teachings and fights in an underworld club.
Story seems initially straightforward but there's an interesting reveal linked to Donaka's motivation. Also kudos to Tiger Chen. He's mostly known for doing choreography and stunts (especially for The Matrix), so it's neat for a film to concentrate so much on both his acting and fighting.
Fighting is pretty good, shares more in common with The Matrix fancy style than the semi-grounded brutality of John Wick (the latter is my personal preference but I can appreciate the former), there are definite moments of ignoring gravity.
Keanu Reeves should play a villain more often, the flat monotone combined with the sudden acts of brutality help sell Donaka as a menacing figure.
also this is a movie where the villain is stalking and trying to corrupt the hero, why are there not fics shipping them on ao3? it's almost entirely villain/OCs and I'm disappointed.

I just saw Dune 2 yesterday. Watched some reviews, and a video summarizing the books as well. Shit gets wild. But also: I feel like it allows a glimpse into the white male imagination. It basically ends up with Paul’s son (oh yeah spoiler) becoming emperor as well somehow turning himself into a half worm and then ruling for thousands of years as a tyrant in order to “teach” people how to want freedom bad enough. Like, I’m sorry, WHAT.
Why do white people always want to frame torture, exploitation, fascism etc as somehow “for your own good.” Absolutely disgusting.
I find it incredibly hard to love myself through all this. I just want to give up. Or fall back, like Cypher in the Matrix. Forget, pretend I don’t know, because it’s too hard and I want to die. Cypher wants that because outside the Matrix he has no one and nothing, really. No family, no one that cares for him. As far as he is concerned he is just a cog in the new machine. At least if he goes back in he can taste steak. Enjoy some of the simpler things.
But I don’t want to be a Cypher. So then what. How do I stay in the fight. How do I love myself when I am one of the bad guys. I have to change sides, right?? But how????
I still love my family. I don’t know how to think of them politically… maybe centrist. They dont care much about individual differences, my being queer or trans is not deeply meaningful to them - nor do they especially want to tell people about it. I guess they are very white apathy. White middle class apathy. Income wise they are not even middle class, more like aspirational middle class, with the big trappings like houses etc accomplished through intense strictness and frugality. I feel tired even writing about them.
I don’t know how to decenter myself or my pain. I don’t know how to be an “ally” or whatever when I’m in this state. But somehow I must make the leap. I have to try.

Podcast #940: The 3 Types of Failure (And How to Learn From Each)
People often think of failure in one of two ways: as something that hinders the pursuit of success, or as something that’s a necessity in obtaining it — as in the Silicon Valley mantra that recommends failing fast and often. There’s truth to both ideas, but neither offers a complete picture of failure. That’s because there isn’t just one kind of failure, but three. Here to unpack what those three types are is Amy Edmondson, a professor of leadership at the Harvard Business School and the author of The Right Kind of Wrong: The Science of Failing Well. Today on the show, Amy shares which type of failure is most productive, which types are less fruitful, and how to best use the former, prevent the latter, and learn from failure of every kind. We also talk about how to organize potential failures into a matrix that will help you best approach them. Along the way, we dig into examples, both big and small, of how individuals, organizations, and families can put failure to work for them. Life Update
Hello all,
I finally feel like I have the mental capacity to rejoin my Tumblr family. I’ve been so incredibly tired, but the last couple of days have given me a bit of respite. The semester is over. My grades are in. My house has attained a level of cleanliness not seen since August. Spouse and I had a lovely Solstice/Yule celebration on Tuesday. More under the cut if you are interested in my ramblings. :)
This semester has been, frankly, the most draining one I can remember since my first semester at my current university, back in 2012, and that is really saying something. Semester 4 of teaching during a pandemic is no joke. All the professors and students are beyond tired, and my students, bless them, still worked and tried really hard, and I was proud of them for making it through, never mind doing really well - which some of them did! But I was just wrecked. I don’t think I mentioned it on here, but I went on anti-depressants in . . . October, I think it was, because I was so exhausted and despairing and didn’t even smile much anymore. I knew I was feeling really bad, which is why I finally talked to my GP and my therapist, but I don’t think I knew how bad until I started meds, and those thousand-pound weights that had been hanging on my limbs, and the total misery in my brain, lessened. I could smile again, and laugh, and wake up with at least some energy, instead of everything feeling like lead.
I also said no to everything humanly possible. No extra meetings, no extra writing projects, no new commitments beyond what I already had. I just recently bent a little and took a book review, for the first time in a long time, because it was a book that was related to a project I am already doing. No. No, no, no. And I felt bad about it occasionally, but I really believe it has allowed me to survive this term in something resembling one piece. I am still an exhausted wreck, but I’m not on the verge of a breakdown.
I got grades done this past Saturday night. Grade review on Monday. Yule was Tuesday, and Spouse and I had a wonderful quiet day - we had the house all decorated already, and we did our gift exchange, listened to holiday music, read, drank lots of tea, had a lovely dinner, and just generally enjoyed ourselves.
Yesterday and today have mostly been maintenance. Car repairs, phone repairs, bill paying, cleaning, laundry. A little bit of e-mail. Many, many necessary things that had fallen by the wayside both because of the semester and in the run up to Yule. BUT, we did manage to watch The Matrix: Resurrections and it was AMAZING. We ADORED it. We want to watch it again to catch more things! It was fantastic. Everything I was hoping it would be, and a little more, even. I will probably write a separate post about it because I just had SO MANY FEELINGS.
Also, we watched the season finale of Hawkeye tonight, and just wow. All of the episodes were so well done, but there was so much in this one! I will probably do a separate post about that series as well. I’m all about it. It was great.
My brain has not managed to recover enough to think about fic, but I am hoping I will get there. The rest of this week is going to be about book reading, movie watching, and talking to my family. Rest is absolutely essential.

[tastebreaker review] Law School (no spoilers)
Sometimes, I wish I could have a shrine for all the cerebral media that I consumed, because it definitely is my favourite archetype. Death Note was a masterpiece that I hungrily binged in one day - similarly with Psycho Pass (though I haven't watched the second season due to most of the reviews I have read). This extend well into non-anime media for me - State of Play (with Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams) remains one of my favourite movies, Inception and, well, honestly anything by Christopher Nolan, and I have recently began watching The Matrix as well.
And so, the thirst for real mystery and brain games was quenched when I started watching Law School, with Kim Myung-min, Kim Beom and Ryu Hye-young, directed by Kim Suk-yoon. Needless to say, throughout the whole trip, I was hooked, counting down days until the next episode came... but towards the end - an unpopular opinion - I was actually quite disappointed.
And so, before you start your cross-examination, allow me to present my findings first.
- How did I start watching this?
My friend and I were looking around for something to binge on Netflix and forget about COVID-19. This series popped up, and the moment I read the title, my sapiosexual senses were tingled.
- And how was it?
Very good!... until the ending came. ;w;
- Genres & overarching themes?
Genres: Mystery, Thriller, Psychological
Overarching themes: murder mystery, law vs justice, intelligence (as in, the characters are all really smart hahah)
- Plot: 4/5
It could have been a high four, near five if it wasn't for the ending, frankly. The first episode started out with Professor Seo Byung-ju of Hankuk Law School dead, and the spotlight shines on Professor Yang Jong-hoon (the man in the poster above), the first suspect. But was it really him? From then, the mystery unfolds as our favourite study group (who shall be very well elaborated on later in this review) launches itself into investigation for true justice.
The series started out extremely strong in my opinion, with its first few episodes filled with twists and sub-plots that were waiting to get wrapped up. Every episode just leaves you gripping on the sides of your seat in suspense. It really makes you doubt every single person that appeared on-screen and watch out for anything that happens - the show uses the Chekhov's Gun trope really well. As the knots become unravelled, we gain more depth into the characters. However, as we near the end - about two-three episodes for me - the show started to lose its thrust, falling into a comfortable stereotype that made things rather frustrating.
One of the major advantages of Law School, in my opinion, is its ability to twist and turn everything. It prompts the viewers to realize that when the case is really examined in a whole different angle, with more and more evidence coming to light, everything changes. The use of different suspects' stories being told in each episode is a pleasure to watch - the viewers feel like an omniscient judge, overseeing the motives and evidence to draw out a conclusion for themselves on who might be the murderer. The series prompts the viewers to think, which is a trend I really like. It's also interesting to question why characters do certain things they do. Professor Yang Jong-hoon (my favourite character!), for example, is a very... chaotic (haha) character, who keeps on surprising people with his actions - yet, his actions are all elaborate executions of his strategy, a whole plan that he has concocted which accounted for multiple steps ahead, thanks to his extremely sharp vision of what could happen. Thus, it is extremely satisfying when everything falls into place as Yangcrates (a nickname he earned due to his Socratic teaching) explains everything that led up to a particular tense moment where the truth was unveiled.
Yet... this very trope had its downfall near the end. The murderer was so heavily shadowed on in the beginning that the viewers would have expected the murderer to be someone else completely unexpected, a mastermind that pulled the strings behind all the proceedings. Yet, the murderer and the mastermind behind the murder were someone so... I dare say, unimpressive. I mean, this particular 'mastermind' behind the murder fell into so many traps! The murderer was definitely my major disappointment - the villain was a weak character, an unsatisfying antagonist that the intelligent heroes, once having figured who he/she is, didn't even break a sweat to bring to light. The last, final twist that was supposed to be the most glamorous of them all, completely knocking the viewers off their feet, fell completely flat.
Secondly, whilst having a lot of sub-plots still remains a favourite trope of mine as I'd expect everything to wrap up nicely near the end... well, it didn't. Whilst most sub-plots were hastily answered, there was one particular sub-plot which was just left completely unaddressed (for those who have watched it, it's about J****s), and unless they're hinting at a second season where this would be further elaborated on, this was a dead-end sub-plot, a plot with no elaboration or continuation whatsoever.
Overall, the plot was breathtaking in the beginning. It lost momentum very near the end, and wrapped everything up with an anticlimactic last episode.
- Characters: 4.7/5
Definitely the strongest set of characters I've seen in a Korean drama, frankly. All characters were so well utilised, each having their own quirks and flaws which were delightful to watch. Everyone was so, so intelligent, that they honestly were the main fuel to the series, our main stars.
Allow me to first start off with my favourite character, Professor Yang Jong-hoon. Stoic, yet with an extremely savage side that he does not hesitate to show to anyone of any ranks or social standings, Yangcrates carefully plots everything, always thinks, questions, and then thinks even more. Intelligence-wise, this man is most definitely the smartest on-screen persona I've seen in the Korean drama franchise - able to see miles ahead and figure out all the answers down to their root, he is someone that definitely earns all the respect he has, from both his students and viewers alike. Personality-wise, this man is equally interesting as he is smart. With a cold exterior, Yangcrates does not take any bullshit (cue a particularly funny water spitting scene), and does not hold back harsh words to point it out. Yet, underneath this cold exterior is a burning desire to find the absolute truth, which would in turn bring justice to ones who have been wronged (refer to a particular lecture-like speech he made in episode 10), and a passion for teaching his students. He secretly cares for his students a lot, and expresses it in his own way.
Next, our favourite study group - a group of capable, enticing individuals. Firstly, we have Han Joon-hwi, a complex character that always pursues justice and fairness. His intelligence shines through with the way he, firstly, is able to take advantage of his sharp understanding of law into the case, and his careful processing of the evidence he gathers during investigation. Whilst he always keeps a cold head when needed, he has an equally warm heart, genuinely caring for wronged and innocent people. His expressions were all extremely raw and did not feel fake at all - really, props to his actor. More on this later.
Then, we have the two girls - Kang Sol A and Kang Sol B. Don't be fooled by their names - they are very much polar opposites. Whilst Kang Sol A is excitable and wears her heart on her sleeve (sometimes a bit too much), Kang Sol B always keeps a cool head, sometimes taking it to the extreme. I do admit that if I had to pick out of the two, though I love both of them very, very much, I'd probably lean a bit more towards Kang Sol A - even though she definitely gets on my nerves sometimes because of her overload of emotions that could be disruptive, she has her frequent bouts of creativity and "a-ha!" moments that display her underrated intelligence (I'm always soft for underdogs that are underestimated by everyone, only to turn the table on them later). She is also an extremely loyal friend and a very generous individual that isn't afraid to place herself in danger just to help others - overall, a very warm person. Kang Sol B, on the other hand - perhaps due to her family environment - does not really taking other people's emotions into consideration, though I really, really admire her for her intelligence, her ability to always keep a calm head (making her the blue counterpart to Kang Sol A's red), as well as her straightforwardness which has proven many times to be necessary to push the case forward. She does have a soft spot, though - a very adorable one at that. These two make an extremely adorable pair of friends.
My favourite student of the study group must be Seo Ji-ho. I'd say he's a less intimidating version of Kang Sol B hahah - cool and composed, Ji-ho is a reliable member who always pursues logic and reason first. He is also driven to achieve his goal and, like Joon-hwi, utilizes his deep understanding about law very well to solve his own case, his sub-plot. Though his sub-plot eventually was wrapped up as an open ending, it was a nice sub-plot to watch. Not to mention his dynamic with Joon-hwi is very adorable as well - the two really balance each other out.
Other students also have their own quirks and flaws, but for the sake of this review's length, I won't elaborate them as much - but I will say they are all a delight to watch, adding their own personal elements to the overall study group. I will definitely miss this set of characters so, so much. ;-;
- Acting: 4.4/5
Frankly, perhaps because of some K-drama series I have watched, I had a problem with acting in some K-drama series - the actors and actresses did not feel genuine, and they either overacted, pushing their expressions to the extreme, or underacted, simply being way too... stiff (some of my personal favourite actors and actresses so far are Kim Seon-ho, whose theatrical experiences probably really helped with his very natural acting, Jo Jung-seok, and Kim Hye-yoon, an actress who impressed me with both of her most popular series - hope to see her versatility shine through with more diverse roles though). This series, however, is a definite favourite of mine in terms of acting. Firstly, Kim Myung-min is a veteran actor that deserves so much respect - he basically morphed into Yangcrates. I absolutely loved the way he delivered his dialogues - very long ones! - without even so much as taking a breath in between - it was smooth and the flow was excellent.
Kim Beom also became one of my favourite actors after this series - the way he handled his role was so good, his expressions, actions, everything. I noticed that he's very good with his eyes, if that's the right way to put it - he is very good at displaying emotions with them, all emotions ranging from sadness to adoration (towards a particular someone *wink*). It's a top-notch skill, really, and I'm glad to have seen him on-screen. Similarly, Ryu Hye-young impressed me so, so much that I shall add her to my list of favourite actresses as well - I can't spoil, but she is really able at... altering her vibes, yes. She seems to have studied her character really carefully too, being able to bring all Sol A's quirks to real life. Other actors and actresses were amazing, but for me, these three definitely shone.
- Doki moments?
Ah. Definitely some between Sol A and Joon-hwi, as a lot of other people have commented. From the way they tease each other to the way he cares about her every little thing, the way he stares at her, the way his whole demeanor just changes around her and the way she unknowingly influences him so much - they do balance each other out really well, Joonhwi being the cool to Sol A's warm. I do find myself thinking Sol B and Ji-ho would be rather compatible as well (also, them being study rivals in high school? My rivals-to-lovers side is ready).
- Enjoyment: 4/5
Again, could have been higher if it wasn't for the ending! But yes, overall, a whole trip worth embarking on.
- Overall: 4.2/5
Really, could have been higher... but yes, still an excellent show. I just hope they could have had more episodes to really wrap everything up nicely and maybe throw us one final, absolutely ground-breaking twist.
- Watch it or neh?
Yes, please do watch it! And let me know how it goes, too. ;3

Detect Magic: the Sixth World Tarot by Echo Chernik
(pictured here- the deluxe edition [left] and the Arcanist edition of the Sixth World Tarot by Echo Chernik)
Y'know, it's been a long time since I did one of these, but here goes. It's time for another Detect Magic review. I haven't put the Dork Magician hat on for a while, so let's give this a whirl!
Today we're taking a look at the Sixth World Tarot, by Echo and Lazarus Chernik. She has this available on her website (click the above link), which come signed by the artist and the author. I'm a bit bummed, I bought a copy of this deck juuuuust before she started signing them. Not her fault, but still. XD
For those of you unfamiliar with Shadowrun, it's a cyberpunk dystopian magic-and-mech RPG setting and fantasy novel universe which originated in the late 80's. The premise is that magic is growing stronger, the world experienced a big Awakening in the early 2000's, right around the same time that corporations managed to gain extraterritoriality. So, you have dragons running huge megacorps, which basically enslave people to be lifelong wageslaves from birth (or as soon as they can get their hands on a desired talent), immersive VR Matrix hackers, cyberware enhanced fighters and magic practitioners acting as "deniable assets" to said corps for all sorts of shady business.
Hence the name "Shadowrun."
This setting, one of my absolute favorite settings out there, has had the misfortune of developing a sort of eerie prophetic element akin to the Simpsons and its bizarre track record of prediction of ludicrous world events. Shadowrun was intended to be a cautionary tale, not an oracular one. That being said, that does make a tarot based on Shadowrun more than a little on-the-nose for predictive purposes. After all, they're telling the future without even trying. Wait until they actually put some effort into it...
All right, time to Detect Magic!
Accessory- Crit (4 out of 4) Stunning artwork, evocative imagery... this deck is gorgeous. It's so beautiful, and so intricate and well made, that people who don't even read tarot (or even particularly like tarot) buy several copies for their geeky collections, and even people who don't particularly care about Shadowrun have dropped their jaw when I showed the deck to them.
A bit busier than I'm used to working with (not the art, but the extras which I'll explain later), I was pleasantly surprised at how much I loved the cards when I first got them. The box for both editions I own are a nice durable gloss with a magnetic foldover closure, there's a ribbon inside each to help pull the cards and book out of the box, and the decorative artwork is gorgeous and fitting with the setting. Definitely aesthetically pleasing enough to take places, and durable enough to resist scuffing or tearing for on-the-go divination and gaming use.
Tome- Crit (4 out of 4) So, the Tome section of this review is supposed to be about how well the cards help one in the pursuit of learning magic and practicing geekomancy. And... really, I don't think I've found a deck (or any artifact of fandom) quite as good as this.
Let me explain.
Tarot, in the sorcery practice I teach, are already basically a pictorial grimoire, describing life in a way that allows us to learn the hidden movements, mysteries, and forces at play in our world. Art is good for things like that in general. It helps you see the world through a special lens, one which allows you to see things you might have missed.
The thing is, the lens of this deck is the Shadowrun continuity, which as I said earlier, has proven to be more than a little prophetic, and alarmingly so.
The magic system of Shadowrun is pretty adjacent to our own. Life force lines, spiritual power sites, astral projection and spirits and magical "energy" forms, initiatory mysteries... it's all pretty much the same as our own reality, just juiced up a bit, with some extra game elements added (don't even ask me about insect spirits).
This makes the deck particularly helpful if one wishes to learn magic in any of the myriad ways described in Shadowrun (and they're particularly respectful and diverse and true-to-life in their tradition descriptions).
BUT, it also has an entire lore-book called the Book of the Lost associated with it, which explains all these little secret sigils and images and easter eggs stored throughout the deck, which can be used for gamebuilding and storytelling, but are designed to be arcane indicators and omens, among other things. And the kinds of symbols they use range from sentences or mottos in dead languages, all the way to waveform patterns and dot-matrix maps. I swear, if you're one of those people who like puzzles and cryptography, this deck is even more fun than the Hermetic Tarot.
In summary, while you'll have to get some Shadowrun sourcebooks to really get deep into the canon lore, there's so much of it that the cards really show you on their own that I don't consider this a setback at all. Feel free to deep-dive with this deck, you'll learn a TON about magic if you let it guide you.
Relic- Success (3 out of 4) If you read the Book of the Lost, or Unearthed Arcana, or any of the 5th edition Shadowrun magic sourcebooks, you'll see that "tarot magic" is an up and coming thing in their canon. Each text helps you see how practitioners use the cards in-game for spellcasting, ritual magic, initiation practices and spirit summoning. The Tarot are already really valuable as central objects of importance to certain kinds of magical practice. This particular deck is designed to be so handy a central object that there's an entire book dedicated to it.
Weapon- Success (3 out of 4) The only reason I'm rating this a success instead of a crit is because they don't provide enough spreads in the various associated books for one to immediately begin casting spells with them, which means you'll have to do some designing. They do have a couple solid unique spreads for basic divination though.
The deck's canon in-game suggests ritual practices like gathering and doing a ritual with sets of related cards, and one such ritual was easily adapted in my own practice, into the Lucky Kimono spread I designed (which people can read about on my Patreon at the higher tiers). So, even without outright including spell-spreads, they sort of gave us clues anyway.
Again, you're going to need the sourcebooks, but it's only a few of them, and they're well worth a read even if you're not planning on playing the game (and I don't play in the actual Shadowrun mechanical system, though I do like the sourcebooks for campaign setting ideas).
Overall Rating: Critical Success (14 out of 16)
Achievement Unlocked: Novahot Echo's artwork is already legendary in the dork realms of geekomancy. She's done work for Dungeons and Dragons, Mage: the Ascension, House of Night... she's even working on a Fate: the Winx Saga playing card deck right now. Her art-nouveau delicacy combined with the powerful non-pandering way she draws women means that her paintings pack a punch!
That being said, it's rare that we see professional artists create a tarot deck of this magnitude as a gaming accessory. Most tarot decks of this caliber are found in professional occult catalogues or as independent projects by artists just wanting to flex their skills for their own reasons. To have a deck like this, clearly a labor of love by all involved, as a major element of gameplay within a franchise is really very special. And something this diverse, deep, and absolutely saturated with layers of ciphers and riddles... it's a geekomancer's dream come true.
Level Up: 2 Levels I think the only way anyone's going to be able to top this deck is if they manage to design a tarot deck that's also a fully immersive VR video game AND an AR game and divination tool useable with one's iPhone or Android. Legit, Echo and Lazarus left everyone in the dust. I haven't been this excited about Shadowrun since Shadowrun Returns first came out, and I got a set of dogtags that had a USB drive with the game on it.
It's just... crazy cool.
Full disclosure, I've had the deluxe edition of these cards for a while now, so I've basically been low-key squeeing about this deck since I first heard about it in 2018, even before I got it. I've been utterly astonished that people weren't more excited about them, and I wasn't hearing about them everywhere.
Before this, I created my own Shadowrun tarot method using the Universal Transparent Tarot (cuz, y'know, plastic and see-through and weird little mosaic readings all in one place, seemed fitting to me), and when I got the Sixth World Tarot? I don't think I've opened the UTT since!
Anyway, this is my review of this deck! Go follow the link up at the top of this post, and buy yourself one! And hey, let me know if you figure out the cool little map trick. My jaw literally dropped when I was shown that!
