a bunch of people in the devil judge tag seem to be fans of beyond evil as well, as they both fall into the niche subgenre of ‘morally complicated crime dramas where an older and younger man have a charged relationship’, which is something that at least on paper i’m a big fan of too. so i was like ok i wasn’t feeling that show when i first tried it but maybe it’s worth another shot. and so that’s what i’ve been doing.
it definitely doesn’t have the best first ep, at least for my tastes, but this time once i pushed past it to the 2nd i was immediately more interested. i’m now more than halfway through, and. hm.
obviously i do get why fans have grouped it in with tdj but it’s also kind of hilarious bc these are really like. opposite experiences to me?
even if it’s a bit too involved for me to totally follow beyond evil is clearly very well written plot-wise, with the details of these crimes being foreshadowed and built up well. the focus is tight and the reveals work and everyone onscreen plays a necessary role.
whereas plot-wise watching tdj is like. watching a ten car pileup occur in front of you. so much is happening and so much of it is happening out of fucking nowhere.
otoh, that can be a fun positive if you’re like me. and besides that i’ve managed to get into tdj bc it allows its characters more little personal details than many other kdramas i’ve attempted. gaon with his plants and his love of cooking for people. yohan with his books and talking to his alexa. and not only personal details but like, character dynamics that exist outside of the plot? the domestic stuff... scenes without any real stakes are so important to my enjoyment of something.
which is proving to be an issue for me with BE bc i’m at ep 10 and still don’t really know what the interpersonal dynamic between the leads is supposed to be. like they have a pretty intriguing thing going on re: their roles in the story. but their interactions outside of the case have been too minimal to get a read on their relationship as people, i feel. and little personal details are sorely missed here. even juwon’s germaphobe thing is just kind of gone now at this point, so like. who is this guy?? i dunno jack shit about him. which doesn’t lessen my interest in the story being told per se but it does lessen my investment in the world it takes place in.
tl;dr the contrasts between seemingly similar pieces of media are just fascinating to me, i guess. when i finish BE i imagine i will think “that was a well-constructed tv show.” and when tdj ends this weekend, unless it totally bungles everything, i imagine i will think “that was a hot mess and it entertained me so much.” and y’know... down the line i think people tend to remember the fun messes more fondly.

hello hello, i'm curious about what your process is like for making gifs. i've never done it and i like knowing the behind the scenes work of making art if you're comfortable sharin
omg thanks for such an interesting ask!
my giffing skills r super basic i mostly just choose scenes and recolor them so there is not a lot to it? but the process does differ slightly depending on the show. i did get into giffing because of tdj and by the time i had started making tdj gifs i had already watched the whole show like 5 times so with that i already knew with details had impacted me the most, the frames that had awed me the most so i wanted to highlight them and thats why i started the faceless(-ish) tdj per ep series! but also yohan hot and gaon looks so good all angry and bothered so those scenes are also a fave to me. tdj is just such an intentionally crafted show and giffing it has made me appreciate it so much more
coming to other shows i mostly just choose scenes where i notice something cool? could be a parallel, cool lighting, good framing or just my fave suffering lol
currently im very attached to love in the big city and my fave thing bout giffing it is how the shots just linger?? in certain scenes? giffing to me feels like putting the scenes in a little time capsule so i can look at them forever.
coming to the technical stuff i use a ☠️ vers of photoshop and mostly just play around with which frames i want to use and which coloring looks alright to me? (i can deffo link the tutorials which are my holy grail lemme know if u want them!) and when some gifs don't make it to the final set they end up in gif graveyard!
