TCU: 2022 Fiesta Bowl Champions
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- In the biggest upset since the advent of the College Football Playoff, third-seeded TCU rode its underdog status to a 51-45 win over undefeated and No. 2 Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl on Saturday. The win continued TCU's storybook season and made the Frogs the first Big 12 team to reach the title game in the CFP era.
Highlighted by a 44-point third quarter between the two teams, the semifinal matchup was a back-and-forth affair that saw TCU nearly lose an early 18-point lead, a pair of pick-sixes, two fumbles, a 76-yard touchdown pass, eight scores in just about eight minutes, a record-setting 59-yard field goal and the highest combined score in Fiesta Bowl history.
The signs of an explosive game were there early. Starting in place of injured star running back Blake Corum, Donovan Edwards ripped off a 54-yard run on the first play of the game, yet the Wolverines walked away with zero points after a fourth-down try near the red zone was stopped.
On the next Michigan offensive drive, quarterback J.J. McCarthy threw a telegraphed pass to the outside that was picked off by sophomore safety Bud Clark and returned for a touchdown. It was the Frogs' third pick-six of the season and put them up 7-0.
The Frogs' defense was the star of the first half, as Michigan entered the TCU red zone three times and came away with only nine points by way of three field goals thanks to two huge stops and a fumble at the 1-yard line by Edwards.
TCU's offense, meanwhile, used the advantage of the Air Raid's pace and speed to get out in front. A 12-play, 76-yard drive culminated with quarterback Max Duggan rushing into the end zone from the 1-yard line to put the Frogs up 14-0 in the first quarter. Under coach Jim Harbaugh, Michigan had allowed more than 14 points in the first quarter and gone on to win just once, in 2016 against Colorado, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.
While Michigan struggled to capitalize, on the other side of the ball, Duggan -- the Heisman runner-up -- was pulling out all the stops. Duggan wasn't particularly accurate through the air in the first half, but with his legs, he danced his way to first downs and kept pushing TCU downfield as the Wolverines struggled to mitigate his mobility.
No play was more indicative of that problem than when Duggan rolled out of the pocket with 4:56 left in the second quarter and avoided the Michigan blitz to find Taye Barber for 6 yards and six more points. The touchdown culminated a 10-play, 83-yard drive that gave the Frogs a commanding 21-6 halftime lead and put the Wolverines in their biggest deficit of the season.
Both teams came out of the tunnels after halftime like they were shot out of a cannon, combining for a 44-point third quarter that featured a flea-flicker touchdown from McCarthy, the second pick-six of the game from the Michigan quarterback, another pick from Duggan and three touchdown drives of under three minutes.
McCarthy and Michigan, who had two of those drives, were not going away. But just as the Wolverines were attempting to claw back, TCU kept responding. This time, it was running back Emari Demercado who broke loose for a 69-yard run that Duggan finished off with another 1-yard touchdown sneak. The Frogs finished with 41 points through three quarters. All season, the most points Michigan had given up in an entire game was 27, and going back to last season, the most the Wolverines had surrendered in a game was 37.
After Michigan cut the TCU lead to three points early in the fourth quarter, Duggan, as he has done all season, responded by making the throw of the game. While facing a blitzing defender in his face and a long third down, Duggan found a crossing Quentin Johnston in stride. Johnston sped his way to the sideline and took it 76 yards to the end zone to put the Frogs back up 10. A field goal extended that lead to 13 early in the fourth quarter.
Another methodical Michigan touchdown drive by McCarthy cut the lead once again, this time to six points with 3:18 left, setting the stage for TCU and Duggan. The Frogs needed two first downs to finish the game with the ball in their hands. They could get only one, and the Wolverines had 52 seconds to go 75 yards and make a miracle happen.
On fourth-and-10 with 35 seconds left at its own 25, Michigan fumbled the ball and recovered, but the ball did not make it past the first-down marker. As TCU assistant coaches in the upstairs box yelled and screamed, "We're going to the Natty!" all Duggan had to do was take a knee. The upset of the season -- and of the era -- was complete.

Williams: Big 12 football needs new alpha dog with Oklahoma, Texas headed to SEC
Every football power conference has its top dogs, its headliners. In the SEC, it’s Alabama and Georgia, with a long, ruthless line of proud programs behind them angrily nipping at their heels. In the Big Ten, it’s Ohio State and Michigan. In the ACC, historically it has been Florida State or Virginia Tech but instead […]

The University of Georgia football program has a long and storied history that dates back to the late 1800s. Gary Patterson
Physique: Average Build Height: 5'9" (1.75 cm)
Gary Allen Patterson (born February 13, 1960 -) is an American football coach and former player. He was most recently the special assistant to the head coach at the University of Texas. He is the former head football coach at Texas Christian University (TCU) and the coach with the most wins in Horned Frogs' history. Patterson led the TCU Horned Frogs to six conference championships and eleven bowl game victories. His 2010 squad finished the season undefeated at 13–0 after a 21–19 Rose Bowl victory over the Wisconsin Badgers on New Year's Day 2011, and ranked second in the final tallying of both major polls.
Deliciously cute, his weight fluctuates but I like it when he's on the thicker side and if you look closely, you will note that he's a free baller. I can't wait to see him running around the sidelines again, watching him get all sweaty out there and things… boucing around. OH GAWD! Sorry… I need a moment.
Of course he's married with three sons and grandson. He also plays guitar, even produced an album. He's pretty much the perfect "daddy." Great dad bod, great smile, thick cut meat, hangs hard right. Mmm… This is the kind of man I could spend hours with. Look at him. He just looks like he'd be a good fuck. Top… bottom… just a good fuck. Would love to let Gary use me as his fuck boy, let him stick it and blow it, wherever he wants!

If you're unfamiliar with Jack Trice's story, here is a short version:
Trice was originally from Ohio, but in 1922, he followed his high school football coach, Sam Willaman, and some of his teammates to Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa. There, he was one of the very first African American athletes at Iowa State.
On October 5, 1923, Trice wrote the following letter while staying at a racially segregated hotel in Minnesota the night before his second college football game:
“My thoughts just before the first real college game of my life: The honor of my race, family & self is at stake. Everyone is expecting me to do big things. I will! My whole body and soul are to be thrown recklessly about the field tomorrow. Every time the ball is snapped, I will be trying to do more than my part. On all defensive plays I must break through the opponents’ line and stop the play in their territory. Beware of mass interference. Fight low, with your eyes open and toward the play. Watch out for crossbucks and reverse end runs. Be on your toes every minute if you expect to make good.” -Jack
The next day, October 6, 1923, Trice and his college teammates played against the University of Minnesota.
Unfortunately, his collarbone was broken on the second play of the game, and he was taken out of the game. However, he would return to the game in the 3rd; only to be trampled by 3 Minnesota players.
He was then sent to a local hospital where he was declared well enough to travel back to Ames with the rest of the team.
Sadly, Trice would die on October 8, 1923, from hemorrhaged lungs and internal injuries sustained during the game.
In honor of Trice, all classes after 3 p.m. on October 9, 1923, were dismissed.
His funeral was held on Iowa State's central campus, and 4,000 students and faculty would be in attendance.
Iowa State would not play Minnesota again until 1989.
In 1973, interest in Trice's story was rejuvenated, and there was a movement to name the new stadium after him. The student body government supported this effort, and the Jack Trice Stadium Committee collected over 3,000 signatures in support. But despite support, in 1984, the stadium was named "Cyclone Stadium," and the field would be named "Jack Trice Field."
Unsatisfied, the student body government raised money to erect a statue of Trice in 1987.
Image via the Ames Public Library
Due to the continuous push from the student body government, students, faculty and staff, alumni, etc. in 1997, the stadium was finally renamed Jack Trice Stadium. It is the only Division I FBS stadium or arena to be named after and African American.
On October 7, 2023, the Iowa State Cyclones wore throwback uniforms to honor Jack Trice. The Cyclones won 27 to 14 over TCU.
For further information, I recommend the book "The Idealist: Jack Trice and the Battle for a Forgotten Football Legacy" by Jonathan Gelber.
It goes into further detail about Trice's childhood, football career, and his life outside of football. Whether you're a football fan or not, this is a story worth knowing.

The Week of Sportsball on TV: 11/28-12/4
So this is just something I felt like doing, as I’m a bit of a TV junkie at times - what did everyone watch on TV this past week for sports?
Football:
23 million people saw the Cincinnati Bengals win their third straight against the Kansas City Chiefs on CBS.
18 million people saw the fourth quarter death and destruction of the Indianapolis Colts at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys on NBC, with *33* unanswered points in the final minutes of that game.
And of the 19 million people watching the games on Fox, some of them saw the New York Giants and Washington Commanders end their game in an overtime tie. Boo.
(the other) Football:
A combined 14.5 million people on Fox and Telemundo watched the USA barely beat Iran in the World Cup group stage to make it to the round of 16.
And a combined 15 million people, also on Fox and Telemundo, got up at 10am Eastern to watch the USA completely suck on the pitch against the Netherlands.
College Football:
A combined 21 million people watched Georgia win the SEC Championship and Michigan win the Big Ten Championship on CBS and Fox, respectively, locking the #1 and #2 ranks for the playoff.
On the flip side, 9.4 million people watched TCU lose the Big 12 Championship to Kansas State in overtime on ABC, yet they retained the #3 ranking anyway.
And thankfully, only 6 million people watched USC choke everything away and lose the Pac-12 Championship to Utah on Fox. It was embarrassing.
