Tomorrow’s the sixteenth!

On the months where I can’t think of (or don’t have time to make) anything funny to post for Tintin Day I’m trying to draw more of the supporting cast! Chang (or Tchang) is a particularly special character tied to the series starting to overcome its period-typical xenophobia and that feels pretty topical right now.

Tintin breaks something that he can't actually leave the hospital without assistance and Tchang comes to visit.

Unfortunately for everyone, he now has the assistance to leave the hospital.

The boys are planning mischief.

Hergé’s original drawing for ‘The Blue Lotus,’ 1936,

In four colors, this gouache was to illustrate the cover of the first edition of the “Blue Lotus” but had been refused by Casterman editions because of the printing costs of the time.

The canvas was inspired by a picture of Anna May Wong, the Chinese-American actress who appeared with Marlene Dietrich in the 1932 film Shanghai Express.

In 1934, Hergé met Chinese sculptor Tchang Tchong-Jen, the only real person besides Al Capone to be integrated into the Tintin comics.  

The story of the Blue Lotus involves Tintin heading for China in the hope of dismantling the opium trafficking industry.

i know this is like. not true to canon, but i think Chang is very much the type of character who would just always have his eyes shut for no reason. it would give every shot of him this aura of serenity and wisdom, but with self-awareness (cause he could just open his eyes if he wanted to yknow). i think it’d be neat.
