What? Homestuck updated? I get that 11-11 is an arc number (even if it's by far the least important one), but I thought we were on hiatus to work on the big [S] page?

Anyway, Tavvy left a message. That's some fancy handwriting. It's also quite possibly the first written message in the history of Homestuck that's 100% grammatically correct normal English, with Tavvy dropping his comma quirk entirely. Also everyone involved here has cell phones and Tavvy is writing them a letter by hand. He's also leaving snacks for the other kids and telling them to eat the raisins.

It's very parental. Bit interesting that Tavvy, who has had the worst upbringing in a comic about abused children, is the best dad. Tavvy in general is a bit of an enigma, all we really know about him is that he has latent anger issues, presents as a total geed, and is apparently a Man Of Action in disguise.

Hey hey, it's gavageCunctation! Last seen on Vrissy's phone in the jail, where Vrissy was able to talk to her (despite no internet) but didn't want to. 801 minutes ago is the HSBC arc number reversed, but also GC is using a time travel capable chat client, implying they're in another universe.

GC: you'd "h8" this "vaguely ominous Doomer 8ullshit." GC: but this time... GC: i really feel like it's true. GC: i'm going to play TC's game with some of my friends today...

A universe with a "game". GC was Terezi's tag originally, but this character is using a purplish #8E5594 font color instead of teal. That hex doesn't match Eridan (6a006a) or Feferi (77003c), so it's not a troll blood color despite the grey (clawed) hands. Perhaps she's in the DirkRose session? The original TC was Gamzee (terminallyCapricious), but I think these characters will be nothing like their handles imply, even as GC and AG are friends.

GC: AA (that's oomf)---* has def been bugging you about this because she cannot fucking help herself... GC: if it's one thing she gonna do it's bug or fuss or meddle. GC: heh well, i guess that's three things.

We also have an AA, which was Aradia's tag originally, but "bug or fuss or meddle" is a line associated with Kanaya.

GC: except she's not an oracle. GC: she's some other shit... GC: to keep it real with you i don't really understand it... but that's kind of the whole deal with magic, right? So, this is either the greatest red herring in history, or confirmation that the Omega Kids are in fact going to play SBURB. That was the running assumption but I think we have this on lock now. AA might have prospit cloud visions, or (more likely?) has her own witchy thing going on.

I don’t think I’ve read it enough to have a sense of something like this. I really disliked Laurie’s scenes with Adrian though. So it’s not so much ‘he wouldn’t say that’ as ‘I would prefer to ignore the fact that he said/did that.'

I think they did. The first time I read it, I didn't really wonder if something had happened, only what had happened: I didn’t know if they’d only kissed or done anything more. Later, it seemed to be confirmed by Ralph’s letter that they’d not done ‘anything more,’ I just assumed it was a kiss, and I don’t really think the dialogue following the ellipses makes much sense without anything having happened. “Now you see what I mean, Spud. It would never have done, would it? Well, goodbye.” What could Laurie have seen if there was nothing besides a hug or handshake or something? What would never have done? Why ask him to ‘come here’ at all?

I really don’t think he’d have any, but if he did I think it'd probably be something nautical.

I don’t know which of them I read and I definitely haven’t read another addition, so I can’t answer this. Apparently, the earlier one had more detail and dialogue, so if I haven’t I’d love to read it

Straike, I hate him with a fiery passion. The man had a dog put down, not because he was sick or anything but simply because he couldn’t be bothered to care for him. Vicar? Ridiculous.

'This is not Ancient Greece, stop being weird,' at the exact moment Andrew is telling him his traumatic life-story and Laurie is preoccupied worrying about Dave. Also related to the question, but not really asked for: if I could I’d also tell Andrew he doesn’t have to feel ashamed of how he feels about Laurie. Well, more accurately, I’d give him a modern copy of ‘Quaker Faith & Practice’ and have the relevant passages highlighted, so I know he won’t miss them. It makes me very sad for both Andrew and Dave that their whole lives could've been very different (and much happier) if they were born four or five generations later.

9. What's a question you have about TC? One you haven't found an answer for yet.

I can't think of any, besides wondering how Mary Renault could've written it because it's so good. I love the use of subtext, the way she describes emotions you've felt before but never would've been able to put into words on your own. In terms of characters and story, I do have a random question about Bunny: was it supposed to be implied that he was a perpetrator of sexual assault? I got that idea when I was reading the car scene between him and Laurie but I was unsure.

I don't know who to tag! I think all of the Charioteer accounts I know have already been tagged, but if anyone hasn't and wants to, I'd love to read your response!

Ralph to Laurie in the ‘break-up’ scene, as soon as Laurie starts asserting himself:

"Don't waste time, Spud. It's childish to start an argument about whether we love each other, the moment I go and sit on the other side of the room”

What a horrible thing to say!  Run like the wind, Laurie!

2. Did they kiss in the study? Yes/no + why you are 100% correct about this.

First let’s take a moment to appreciate Spudodell's recent spot of a stealth kiss (can you re-blog that one too, I couldn't find it!) at the beginning of the ‘break-up’ scene when Laurie comes through the door, which to me is absolutely definitive and ground-breaking (not in a good way for me, but still….brilliant detective work!)

On the kiss, I am in the ‘no kiss’ camp, but it is not possible to be definitive.  I feel that Mary plays a lot with echoes, parallels, and contrasts, and for me ultimately I feel the lack of a kiss is meant to be a contrast to other moments in the book, not an echo. 

But what has exercised me more recently is, kiss or no kiss (but especially if there was a kiss), this scene in chapter two really gives me the creeps.  I have been reading around the topic for some schoolboy Ralph fics and Alec/Ralph (watch this space on that one), and it has become ever more clear (Alec Waugh’s commentary ‘Public School Life’ being the best reference on this) that Prefects really were like Gods.  He points out that prefects had almost as much power as but even less accountability than teachers due to the ‘no-snitch rule’.  You can see it in the discussion of Hazell and his confessions, and how contemptuous the schoolboys are of him for 'confessing' (or in modern terms, reporting an inappropriate relationship).

In some ways, a kiss could explain quite a lot about Laurie’s behaviour and attitudes to Ralph in the book.  But to be brutally honest, I’ve had enough of creepy behaviour in men being disguised as ‘romantic’ in heterosexual romances (Mr Rochester, anyone?) and the thought of encountering it in a gay context in such a beloved book is just too much to bear.

So, no kiss for me!  He was still behaving pretty weirdly but that’s understandable in the circumstances.

3. Mandatory question about Ralph's alleged tattoos.

I’m sold on the fic that has him get a tattoo of his sunken ship.  Love the co-ordinates of Dunkirk idea though!  But I think Lux’s one is more realistic.  My reading of that being that he got drunk and wanted to fit in so he got a load of random not-very-good-ones.

4. 53 vs 59 edition: quote a line or paragraph that is better in the edition you like the least.

I favour the ’59 edition, as I broadly feel the cuts make it read better.  But there is one exception.  When Laurie is daydreaming about swimming with Charles, Mary cuts this line:

“Take off your things and jump in."

Apparently skinny-dipping was a step too far for the US audience!  Scandalous!

Bunny but not in a good way.

I don’t have a copy of the book at hand right now, but while Laurie is visiting home for the wedding he goes on a walk and recites this weird incest-y song to himself, then contemplates how it always felt relatable to him. I’m not saying he would not fucking say that, because obviously he does and I hear him quite clearly. But I am saying maybe he should not have fucking said that. 

Also Ralph calling Bunny “Boo”. I don’t care how drunk he was, you don’t randomly slip out with a word you wouldn’t otherwise use. It’s part of his vocabulary. This one had me in contemplation for months, like, would he ever call Laurie that? Does this count towards the bad habits and lifestyle choices he wants to abandon while being with Laurie? Whole scene’s just embarrassing af

I think they probably did, but that it was very chaste. I’m convinced the kiss between Laurie and Andrew is supposed to mirror it almost exactly. The way I see it, Laurie didn’t fully process it and therefore just stood there. From the flashback he got later on while holding onto Ralph’s sleeve while they’re in Ralph's room I think Laurie might’ve grabbed onto Ralph’s arm a little. But other than that I don’t think he did much, which made Ralph decide he wasn’t ready yet.

I wasn’t aware this is something people discuss lmao, I’ve only thought about it once myself. Gonna be a party pooper and say he has none, as it's "improper"

I feel like me and @renaultphile are the only ‘59 truthers. I think I once even wrote an entire post just on why I like that Mary cut the knee-touch?

Again, don’t have any book copies at hand right now, but I remember one small detail in the ‘53 I really loved. During Alec’s birthday party while he’s blowing out the candles everyone is looking at him, and for a moment there’s this shared feeling of hopefulness. In the ‘53 Laurie feels someone’s eyes on him, but by the time he turns around Ralph has already stopped looking. Something about Ralph glancing at Laurie in this moment, who’s presence represents so much to Ralph, makes me ache.

I guess the obvious answers would be something like Hazell, Sandy or Bunny, but I feel like Andrew would run the most terrifically angsty aesthetic account. Also young Laurie, he'd probably write bad poetry or something

I really wanted him to stay friends with Reg. I always felt like Madge’s Aunt Vera joke was pretty funny and well intended, albeit improper and terribly timed. It didn’t come off to me as her making fun of him for being gay. More like her trying to awkwardly bond over it, similar to Reg during The Bathroom Talk™. If Laurie hadn’t been so emotionally rattled at that time I feel like he would’ve played it off. It was such bad timing for him. So I wanna scream at him ��Chill out, they’re clearly not out to get you!”

I think there still might be a couple minor details, but I can’t remember them right now. The only bigger piece of dialogue that’s still a little intransparent to me is Ralph’s whole speech at the beginning of their post-wedding trip argument. This is so… out of character somehow, I was just as dumbfounded as Laurie was 😂 Considering their relationship (R & B’s) it feels extra cringe, too.

Oh hell yes, I never had doubts about it. Not least because Renault is the queen of ellipses. A lot of excellent analysis has been written by the fandom on this topic, so I’ll just repeat the main argument: The scene would have never had the kind of impact on Laurie if the kiss never happened. I wouldn’t agree there happened more than a kiss, though, I remember reading it somewhere.

3. Mandatory question about Ralph's alleged tattoos.

Hmm, as much as I like tattoos as art, Ralph just doesn't strike me as the type for it. I think, he cares too much about his neat appearances—spotless means spotless. I’m not sure if it was very common among officer ranks at that time, too.

I can’t say that I dislike one or the other, but I tend to reread the 59 rather than the 53 edition, simple because that’s the one I read first. The 53 is more unpolished, but also more honest, I think. One of the passages I like:

“Don't insult my intelligence. […] After a moment he added, "What in hell is there to laugh at?"

"Please, Lanyon, I'm sorry, please."

"Used I to say that?"

"Of course you did. Benson used it as a gag in the House play and it brought down the roof.”

I think this is one of the very rare moments Ralph felt a little embarrassed and we were robbed of it!

Brechtian, a Brechtian lens.

Okay so everyone brace yourself for the most unhinged take you've ever heard. I'm gonna caveat this up front by pointing out that I don't know if I actually myself ascribe to this read, it's just the kind of thing that happens when you are at work listening to the Codex Entry performance of Pathologic: The Marble Nest and the adderall hits just right.

I'm an undereducated pleb so I'm not going to go into the full history of Brecht, hit up any of your local pretentious media nerds for that. But one of the things associated with Brecht is the Alienation Effect. One of his primary concerns as a playwright was the idea that audiences were becoming complacent and were watching plays and observing art without internalizing everything. He had this idea that as the artifice of theatre became more and more immersive, as the Theatre of the Real so to speak became more seamless, audiences weren't actually connecting to what they were seeing. It's hard to impart wisdom and propose hard questions when the audience is just out here vibin', basically.

So Brecht's whole thing was to make the artificiality of the theatre as conspicuous and obvious as possible. There were a few tactics for this, including fun stuff like spoiling the plot of the story at the very start, casting very incongruous actors in specific roles, making the violence over the top to the point of being ridiculous, etc.

The point of these tactics was to jolt the audience out of their Vibe, to remind them they were watching a play, a performance. And in doing so, in theory, it would get the audience to pay more attention to the content of the play. When you are not passively absorbing the story, you will in theory give more consideration to what you are observing and actually THINK about what is being presented to you. Audiences tend to feel empathetic to characters in media, and you wanna jolt them out of that comfy zone.

One common interpretation of MI is that the movies are documentaries of their own productions. I have heard this idea parroted many times by people I broadly respect. Now... I don't personally ascribe to that take, but lets hypothesize for a moment that it's true, that there is a purposeful artificiality to MI. One of the things people point to with this theory is the fact that the first footage of MI: Fallout ever shared wasn't a trailer or teaser or anything.

It was footage of TC breaking his ankle doing that rooftop jump. It was a behind the scenes moment of ultra-reality that affected production. Because the hype cycle around MI is linked inextricably to "oh man what bullshit is TC gonna pull in THIS one" as a conscious marketing tactic.

It's accurate to say that yes, some people just go to see MI for the stunts. And the marketing knows it and promos it. There is an effort to focus on the physical, practical feats of the movie.

What I find interesting is that McQ and TC both share an ethos, that the only reason audiences give a shit about the stunts is because they are a vehicle of characterization. There is more overt writing and acting in MI than it gets credit for. It's like the stunts are a Loss Leader of the movie, yanno? Here is the big spectacle to get people to show up, and once people are in the theatre, you can talk to them.

So, what I'm positing is that if you believe that there is a heightened artificiality to MI, if you think its just a sequence of bombastic set pieces, if you think Ethan Hunt is just TC's alter ego, blah blah blah (again, not my belief) then it should in theory become difficult to sink into passivity with these movies.

If all that is correct, then there is a forced artificiality to MI that mimicks the Brechtian-style, leading to the Alienation Effect. Therefore, the text of the movies, what they are saying about, for random instance, the encroaching threat of uncontrolled AI in a digital world, that message should become more stark and harder for audiences to glaze their eyes over and miss.

Perhaps I'm just letting my plain emotions and personal biases blind me, however the reasoning is fairly simple—he's an asshole. While true crime houses a lot of criminals who are assholes, the fact that I find distasteful is that that he's still alive and still (as far as I am aware) causing trouble. I've seen and studied a lot of criminals and because he's one of the first ones I found unpleasant it just stuck to me.

Normally, shooters who are alive have gone through enough rehabilitation and to help themselves grow and heal even while serving their sentences (i.e. kip kinkel and barry loukaitis) TJ, on the other hand is quite the opposite. The thing with TJ is that he's just so reckless even behind bars. Urinating on walls, getting into a lot of fights, trying to escape prison, doing drugs inside his cell... alotta things. I just feel as if he's too complacent with the fact that he already got a life sentence, which is why he doesn't find the means to better himself.

I try to understand criminals enough to not develop a disdain, especially with the fact that in the future I want to be a corrections counselor and talk to prisoners and help them cope with their situations, rehabilitate them, and possibly be reintroduced to society. There are just a few cases where I fall short and let my judgements get the best of me.

Another thing was that killer shirt he wore during his court hearing. Looking at it gave left a distasteful bitterness on my tongue. It was like he was making a mockery not just of his victims but even himself. I feel bad for the dude because it seems as if he doesn't have self respect, which easily makes people dehumanize him.

If you look at my posts before, I've always had the ideology that even how "bad" a person is, they're still human, which is why I believe in no means can I judge their way of thinking. I am just here to understand and not condone. Understanding them, their backgrounds, and their ideologies enough to understand the influences it has on the nature of their crime, all while not condoning such behavior. It's just that this one case is where I let my judgement get the best of me, which I know isn't good... I fall short from it sometimes haha

Other than that, despite me saying that I "hate" him, at the end of the day, I don't really. I dislike him, which is different from hatred. It's just a bit I have that I find comedic, but to be real, I think he deserves as much understanding as any other criminal.

Yes, absolutely! I previously wrote this meta about why I think so here. But here are a few more reasons:

"Over and over, during those first months, Laurie had relived the scene in the study, guarding it with fierce secrecy as a savage guards a magic word." It would be quite odd for Laurie to constantly relive that last meeting with Ralph and guard it with "fierce secrecy," if Ralph had done nothing more than chastise him, give him an old book, and turn him out of his study. So something intimate must have happened there that Laurie still obsessively thinks about.

The infamous ellipsis after "Come here a moment" was deliberately added to the 1959 edition (one of the only additions Renault makes, rather than subtractions), which I think is probably to help clarify the significance of that pause.

Laurie's proprietary behavior towards Ralph at the party, especially him staking claim of Ralph in front of Bim (and frankly a lot of about Laurie's behavior towards Ralph in general), makes a lot more sense if they had a "moment" together in the past and both of them never got over it or each other. It would help explain why Laurie instinctively feels he does have a claim over Ralph (as the Odysseus to Ralph's Penelope, to use Bim's analogy), as well as why Ralph continues to carry a torch for him after seven years and countless other relationships.

To be honest I don't think he has any tattoos yet (or at least any in areas that would be normally exposed to the public), or else Laurie would have commented on them like he comments on just about everything else about Ralph's appearance. I could see him getting some in the future though, maybe some nautical-themed ones and probably at least one related to Laurie because he's sentimental like that.

I generally prefer reading the '53 edition mainly for the extra bits, but there are several stylistic writing choices I do prefer in the '59 edition. One of them is Ralph telling Laurie, "I didn't think you had that much bitchery in you." He says "cattiness" in the '53 edition, but Laurie is very bitchy (and Ralph likes that about him!).

seokjin's actions can be perceived as considerate in some ways but at the end of the day he's doing all of that for himself. he's starving himself not for the MC, but because he finds her amusing and wants to keep her alive for longer. he listens to her requests when he feels like it but it's more to instill a false sense of security over him actually caring about what she thinks, you know? but he does have some tact though, i'll give him that 🙈 that's correct!

See now tpol jk is someone who loves really hard but when you break his heart, he expects an apology and whenever he broke her heart or hurt her feelings, he worked really hard to make up for it and she made him work hard for it [and rightfully so] but he’s just a type of man to expect the same effort back.

He regrets getting chae pregnant. We all know that even if he was under the influence, he still feels guilty about it. And yn had a really big heart, and she accepted him and his son like her own.

I think that yn is very familiar with his possessiveness and his insecurity when it comes to seeing her with other men and it made me kind of upset that she didn’t defend him in front of yerin who keeps on insulting him by the way, and is always talking shit about their relationship, and she really has no right to do that, so he got hurt by that as well because he’s always protecting yn, even from his father, he literally killed his father because he hurt yn, he broke up with chae because he still had feelings for yn and she hurt her.

Honestly, I think that jk was 30% wrong because he punched an innocent stripper, but yn was 70% wrong for not defending him, and… she should’ve.. I think rejected the strippers advances because he did the same thing, and he expects the same from her.

She knew how he would react, but she still posted that video, knowing that he would see it 100% and how can you not expect him to react the way he did? And the way yerin called yn Jaemins maid? We all know he would never use yn for his own baby.

Day 16) What hobbies does your TC have out of school?

i don't know, but he likes soccer

Day 17) If you could travel anywhere in the world with your TC, where would it be and why?

anywhere he wants, just as long as its a slightly quieter area and we can walk around a lot and talk hehe

Day 18) Imagine if you and your TC were in a relationship and lived together. Describe the perfect daily routine. (As a bonus, how would you split the chores?)

waking up next to each other and cuddling for a bit before starting the day side by side and then heading to work, and afterwards we head back home for dinner and maybe a late night walk. i can wash the dishes, he can cook if hes a good cook if not we will make do, he can do the laundry i can do the cleaning. we can grab groceries together too hehe

Day 19) If you found your TC visibly upset and/or crying, would you comfort them? If yes, how would you go about it?

i definitely would, i would just stand or sit beside him and offer silent support, if he wants to talk i can listen and just be there for him

Day 20) How would you feel if your TC suddenly cut off all contact with you? What do you think their reason would be?

i would be sad, i dont know, i havent given him any reason to cut ties with me but maybe he just feels annoyed by me or uncomfortable? :(

Day 21) What do you think your TC’s opinion of you is?

he always calls me an awesome, model student, his star history student, someone who's obedient and self driven and my baked stuff are great

Day 22) Has your TC influenced your opinions in any way? Likewise, how has having a TC changed you?

he made me feel way more confident about myself and my academics and reminded me in a way that i have something that im good at (history) and hes always encouraging and believing in me so i guess because of his faith in me, i started to have faith in myself too

Day 23) Are you ashamed of your feelings towards your TC? If yes, why?

nope hehe

Day 24) What is more attractive? Your TC’s appearance or personality?

i think his personality drew me in cause hes super super funny and its just a big bonus that he looks super cool

Day 25) What makes your TC special to you?

hes the only teacher i gave a birthday gift to, hes one of the only teachers that outwardly believed in me and encouraged me and history has always been my childhood interest so the fact that he was able to give me a safe space to pursue and excel in that is really special to me and really really just a big part of my life in high school

Day 26) Describe your TC’s appearance.

salt and pepper hair, slicked back usually, dimples on both sides, the brownest, softest eyes ever, a small smile that manages to be teasing at times, he's not very tall, just half a head taller than me or slightly lesser, sometimes he's clean shaven sometimes his beard outlines his jawline :'

Day 27) When you first met your TC, did you think you’d feel the way you do now? If not, what made you fall for them?

i think my heart always knew but my brain took a very long time to catch up, i had a feeling when i first met him that he would become one of my favourite teachers but i didnt know it would get this obsessed HHAHAH i think his personality and interesting teachings really drew me in

Day 28) If you could get your TC a gift for any occasion, what would it be?

i would love to give him my heart but he already has it hehe IM KIDDING i would like to just give him anything, im not good with gifts at all so i just rely on my baking but i would like to give him maybe a book and we can be book buddies i think because he does look like he reads but i dont knoww

Day 29) How have your feelings affected your everyday life? Has it affected the way you do work for their class? (If you have them as a teacher.)

my feelings made me work even harder to top his class and impress him even more when i was still in high school and now im improving almost everything about myself in hopes to impress him or do something even though i dont really see him that much anymore but its a good improvement so far, but i am more delusional too HAHAH

Day 30) What is the best and worst thing that happened with your TC during the past month? In addition, how do you predict these moments will affect your relationship in the future?

okay since it's the first of september i'll say july and august, best thing was me giving him passion fruit cupcakes in july for his birthday, and teachers day in august. worst thing was probably my note to him in teachers day, i think i poured my soul out too much :' like we do talk about the cupcakes like our little secret hehe but im scared the note may change things, hopefully not :'
