Broncos Regular Season Week 3
Hawk Valley
Quick Review
The Broncos lost to the Steelers 21-26 Sunday morning. Drew Lock injured his shoulder in the first quarter, but he might have been injured before the game. He seemed to be off the mark early. Notable Bronco injuries now include Miller, Lock, Lindsay and Sutton.
A longer review
The first quarter had its moments. The Pittsburgh Steelers screwed up a hand off early in the game, but the Broncos failed to recover the fumble. Luckily for the Broncos, that drive didn’t go anywhere. Later, the Broncos offense drove down to the 27 where Lock threw an errant pass. It looked like he was trying to hit the moon. Lock followed that pass up with a fumble that Pittsburgh recovered. Lock left for the locker room with an injury. Later we learned that he has a shoulder injury and team doctors think he will be out five to eight weeks. Pittsburgh's offense went to work and drove down the field. The Denver defense had an opportunity to stop the drive in the end zone, but it failed to intercept the ball. The Steelers ran into the end zone on the very next play. At this time in the game, an ad from Lowe's ran that showed someone wearing a Bronco jacket at the front door of a Kansas City Chiefs fan. A kid on the inside looks through the window and quickly locked the door. An odd ad to run in the Denver market. Driskel, Denver's backup quarterback, entered the game and under his leadership...the drive stalled with 1:29 left. The Denver defense stopped the next Pittsburgh drive by sacking their quarterback with 16 seconds left on the clock. Pittsburgh ended up punting as the quarter came to an end.
The second quarter started and the Pittsburgh defense quickly got to the "new quarterback". At the fourteen minute mark, the Broncos called a running play on third and 25...they didn’t make it. With 12:07 left in the quarter, the Broncos attempted and made a field goal. A few minutes later, the Broncos are back on offense, but Pittsburgh sacked the Bronco quarterback again, ending the drive. The Broncos successfully punted the ball BUT Pittsburgh returned it 81 yards for a touchdown. The refs flagged Pittsburgh for a block in the back negating the touchdown. That setback lasted only seconds as Pittsburgh went deep on the very next play for a touchdown. With 4:49 left, Jerdy, a new player for the Broncos went down with a rib injury. It's turned out not to be serious because he returned in the second half. The Broncos tried a field goal and missed. Around the two minute warning, Pittsburgh intercepted a pass from the Denver backup. The defense held the Steelers to a field goal as the half ended. At halftime, Ben had 187 yards through the air.
During halftime, I was working the barbecue. Why did I mention this? After starting the barbecue, I discovered I was out of hamburger buns, so I had to run to the store and I missed part of the third quarter. Luckily, the Broncos waited till the end of the quarter to do something. Fant scored for the Broncos with about one minute left. Vic Fangio opted to go for two and was successful. The score at this point was 14-17.
Early in the fourth, Pittsburgh scored another touchdown, upping their lead to ten points. The Broncos got the ball back, but were not able to move the ball. When the Broncos tried to punt with 10:01 left, the punter dropped the ball and the Steelers got a safety. The Broncos defense stopped the next Pittsburgh drive by recovering a fumble with 9:42 left. At this point, the Broncos offense started to move the ball. This drive was aided by a pass interference call on Pittsburgh. Finally, with 7:44 in the game, Gordon, the "new" Bronco running back got into the end zone. Not much happens after this until about the two minute mark. The Broncos offense stalled again and the Broncos were forced to go for it on fourth and two. Pittsburgh sacked the quarterback. At this point Fangio starts to use his timeouts. I’m pretty sure the first one was called with 1:47 left in the game. On the next play the Pittsburgh almost took it to the house. The defense then gave up a 59 yard run, all the way to the Broncos 10. The Broncos then used their remaining timeouts while Pittsburgh ran out the clock in victory formation.
