Do you think that they are trying to use 3 x 07 to make up for the fact that Kat wasn't a least bit nervous about the cops showing up as a black women when she punched someone? In the preview she looks really nervous about the cops now - as she should.

I don’t think they’re trying to make up for 1x04 anymore, I think the show feels like they did that last season with the creative retcon they did about kat’s journey with her racial identity. I think 3x07 is yet another example of s2/s3 trying to look gen z woke and on trend. This episode is explicitly based off of the oakland lake merritt incident that got a lot of attention on social media, just like alex’s story in 3x03 (i think it was x03? i’m losing track) was based off of that viral New Yorker Cat Person essay. TBT follows trends more than leads/predicts them now, because this show is just not as clever as the season 1 team was.

and i know racialized surveillance in neighborhoods and public places isn’t a “trend”; poc and especially black people have been dealing with this shit for forever. i just mean “trend” in the sense that it gains traction on social media, and becomes something that young people (including young white liberal people) are talking about. the whole story seems very contrived for the sake of a one episode social justice issue of the week.

TDB Rewatch: Asian F (3x03)

And we’re back with the rewatch - welcome to Season 3! This week we’re doing Asian F!

The title is a reference to Mike receiving an "Asian F" in this episode. When Mike receives an Asian F, his father tries to drag him out of the New Directions and make him break up with Tina, because of distractions. When Mike reveals that he will audition for the musical, his father is enraged. Auditions for the musical continue. Mercedes begins to get sick of Rachel stealing the spotlight, and how Will continually picks on Mercedes only, causing Mercedes to rethink her commitment with Glee. The directors of the musical conduct a diva-off for Mercedes and Rachel, the class presidency campaign heats up between Brittany and Kurt, Shelby starts an all-female glee club group at McKinley and Emma faces her OCD problems with Will.

The episode was directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon and written by Ian Brennan.

Hi, I saw in TBT episode 305 write up that, “Kat opens up to Tia as they begin their campaign”. I was first thinking it was re Adena & her love & break up, and/her assault arrest (but that would be too much wishful thinking). But now I’m scared to think it’s maybe Kat confessing she likes Tia & wants to date? What’s your take on this? P~

Hi! for your first message, I don’t have a take on the specifics. If I had to guess I would say it probably just means them getting to know each other more and connecting- this will probably be when we first see tbt trying to build a romantic story for them. So it may be that they both find out the other is queer, Kat may mention her recent-ish break-up. I’m guessing there will probably be some cute scene of them laughing/connecting that involves an ~eye contact~ moment. And maybe towards the end of the ep Kat realizing she has a crush on her. That’s my guess, but it really is anyone’s guess at this point.

I actually disagree with you a little about Kat’s political story, even though I understand where you’re coming from. I do think Kat is political and has been since season 1, though there was clearly some retcon done in s2 on her politics regarding race. But I actually think that’s one thing the show has handled fairly well as something for character development. I think Kat is political, but for causes & concepts more so than individuals. She’s not emotionally political in the way that Jane is. But she cares about different issues, and I think sees that as the significance in being the social media head. She sees Twitter, etc as platforms where she holds influence to advocate for things, spark conversation. But while Jane makes everything personal, Kat pays attention to policies (board room dynamics, hiring practices), to unjust laws/systems (women showing nipples in public, immigration laws), and societal innovation for a better more just world. This is why after a while I determined that I think her astrological sun sign is Aquarius. Because all of this is classic Aquarius. She is political, but in a conceptual & intellectual way rather than a super-emotional way. At the same time, she’s got the passion. Her passion is where the emotions show (while also having a pretty concealed emotional life, which is why I think she has a Scorpio moon. If you want to get astrology nerdy with me, you can read about that combo here) But again, it’s passion for concepts/ideas/issues more than individual situations. If you couple that with the fact that she needs something to channel her energy and passion post-breakup, and the fact that she has this lingering insecurity that she’s uninspiring, this city council situation makes sense. the bold type has fucked up a lot of things lately, but there were several aspects of kat’s characterization in 3x03 that i thought were spot on.
