i should mention that this isn’t her only outfit? like, it’s one piece which is thankfully one of those series where characters know how to actually change clothes at least inbetween arcs (& sometimes during) so like. she would definitely change clothes, this is just her most iconic one that would be like in video games and on funko pops and such. so if you see me draw her kissing robin wearing something else that would be why

backstory under the cut because it’s LONG ASS

dali was born on baterilla some 22 years before the story of one piece kicks off. unfortunately she was born with the “soul of a maiden” but without the body of one (translation: she’s trans), which meant that for much of her life she was thought of as an okama and looked down upon as a result. at the age of 17 she therefore left baterilla for momoiro island where she would live in the kamabakka kingdom with others like her. unfortunately after 5 years spent there she realized that she wasn’t satisfied with that kind of life, and having learned about emporio ivankov and their abilities she decided to seek him out. so she took some of her friends from the island and formed her pirate crew, the cutlass pirates, to search for ivankov.

since they didn’t really know where to look, the cutlass pirates just sort of sailed the grand line aimlessly, occasionally recruiting various LGBT folks into their crew. eventually dali amassed a powerful crew, and earned herself a bounty of 110,000,000 bellies, part for antagonizing marines because some of the crewmembers she recruited were being persecuted by them, and part once it got out that she was looking for ivankov who is a revolutionary (giving the government reason to think she was aligned with them). would that she made it to sabaody archipelago she would’ve been considered one of the worst generation, but unfortunately before that could happen, she was captured by marines (taking the fall to let her crew escape) and imprisoned on level 5 of impel down.

once in prison, dali was, like many other prisoners, “demoned away” into newkama land, where she finally was able to meet ivankov and accomplish her goal of getting her ideal body. having experienced the power of a devil fruit first hand, she decided that her new goal would be to seek out a devil fruit and eat it to gain powers just as strong. she stayed in newkama land and trained under ivankov in the use of newkama kenpo, and eventually broke out of prison once luffy showed up, which led to her participating in the battle at marineford alongside luffy and her bounty being raised to 160 million as a result.

after marineford (aka during the timeskip), she returned to the kamabakka kingdom with ivankov and the other newkama, and continued to train under ivankov in the use of newkama kenpo as well as haki (because i refuse to believe ivankov doesn’t have haki). however, the itch for adventure, her desire to find a devil fruit, and the fact that she still didn’t feel like she fit in with the okama (cause she’s a lesbian and they’re not at all attracted to women) caused her to set sail once more. having heard about artificial devil fruits called SMILEs and that caesar clown had something to do with their production, she made her way to punk hazard and became caesar clown’s assistant alongside monet, and also “acquired” (through means befitting of a pirate) the experimental sword that caesar clown made when trying to see if a SMILE could be absorbed by a weapon the same way regular zoans could. and she called it dr. coconut.

eventually after dali did science with monet and caesar clown for a couple months, the straw hats arrived at punk hazard, and dali recognized luffy from marineford and defected to the side of the straw hats, eventually helping them take down caesar clown (but saving monet in the process). after leaving punk hazard with the straw hats she just kinda hangs out on the sunny as basically an unofficial member of their crew, since she still doesn’t have her old ship or crew (but does eventually pledge said ship and crew’s allegiance to luffy and becomes part of the straw hat grand fleet as a result). also she helps out with the plot whenever necessary.
