Heyyyyy, I love reading about your thoughts on Spencer! Never stop, pls. Just got into the fandom and its amazing to see other people delving into a character that you love. He's such an interesting person, although one with a huge amount of trauma. I'd love to hear more about your insights~
oh my 🥺🥺🥺
Spencer is such an important blorbo to me and it's quite an unique experience too- because even tho I had been in fandoms since I was 24 it's the first time I actually get to understand what the character is saying without hundreds of translators and interpretations to get a firm grasp of HOW he speaks, and what tone and what is talking about and how it compares to his peers (English is not my first language, but I understand it way better than Japanese, obviously lmao) so like I can watch an episode, overthink it, and spit whatever interpretation I got from it directly without fear of it being an mistranslation :D also the first time that it's played by an actual human being instead of a drawing so sometimes I feel weird and intrusive as well :D
Okno, now seriously tho- Spencer is legit so fun to analyze and how he plays with his archetype. I read in TV Tropes once that there is this character trope called The Spock, it refers to the one character in a squad that tackles every situation with calm and logic, to an almost emotionless degree, often balanced out by another character that leaps onto action without a second thought and it's moved solely by emotion. However, wanting t apply logic and having nerves of steel in the face of impossible situations (and this is debatable tbh lmao) is as far as that trope goes because Spence is a softie, an emotional clusterfuck, an unstoppable force and a pushover all in one single 185cm of parental issues, puppy eyes and too much sugar.
He is smart and often says the....not quite sensible thing by accident, and uses big words, and reads a lot, and has a photo of Nikolas Tesla with him for some reason- but he is also sarcastic, wildly energetic, petty, a sweetheart, a sassy bitch, a complete loser, the only person that knows what best and isn't afraid to say it- etc, etc, etc. He doesn't believe that the needs of the many outweigh the few but actually latches up to a reduced certain amount of people that he considers giving what is most important to him -his career- up. Even if it hasn't been that long since he knows them.
I just....adores this little petulant ray of sunshine and won't shut up about him anytime soon so I am glad you like my rants ❤️

March 19: 2x11 Friday’s Child
Finally watched this week’s TOS. This was a hard day again and I’m tired and basically as soon as the ep ended my mood deflated again but I think I can write up a few notes and then crawl right back into bed again.
Another episode about negotiating for a mining treaty, huh? (I’m keeping track of all of these, roughly, for my own Nefarious Purposes).
The aliens are seven feet tall and they wear silly outfits.
Wow, what a dumbass red shirt. You’d think Starfleet would train people NOT to just randomly draw their weapons in diplomatic situations.
I honestly forgot there were Klingons in this.
DC Fontana wrote this!! I forgot that too.
Lol Kirk just drops the deceased red shirt. And then keeps holding his hands out like ‘what am I to do now?’
“They want to negotiate for our rocks. Our stupid, useless rocks. Everyone wants our rocks! So weird.”
I’m actually kind of surprised DC Fontana wrote a Klingon ep but like... I guess it’s not that surprising given this guy doesn’t even have a name and is also really dumb lol. At least he’s not in brownface.
When Kirk and Spock disarmed I didn’t realize they were throwing down their communicators and I was a little confused as to why they had to carry so many phasers each.
Kirk’s pretty upset about the crewman’s death, which I get, he always goes feral when one of his people dies and I appreciate that about him... but that guy really did fuck up lol.
I like seeing Scotty in command.
Oooh mood lighting in the tent. And Spock is meditating I think.
Emotion is “inefficient and illogical.” No wonder Kirk thinks they can never be in love!!
And yet jealous is also inefficient and illogical and I detect some of it in Spock when the blonde Cappellan comes in.
“They consider combat more pleasurable than love.” Hmm sounds like someone else I know.
... Honestly I wish the Grounders had been like this. I feel like there’s more thought in creating this society in one episode than in creating that one over 7 seasons.
I love Bones in this and his role as cultural translator.
The Federation believes in self-determination.
“The sky does not interest me.”
I really do dig the world building here. There’s so much going on in this one ep, even just in part of an ep, and you really get the sense that this is a whole world with its own rules and customs and values, and its own complex political machinations that our mains have really just wandered into.
Also the soundtrack today is NOT messing around. TV composers just don’t go this hard anymore, sorry.
Oooh now the Klingon’s afraid at the prospect of fighting Kirk.
The Enterprise just walked into a coup I guess.
Lots of fighting! Kirk must be having fun.
Scotty is so commanding! I feel like he and Uhura were already friends at this point. Like whenever he’s in command she seems really comfortable just wandering up to his chair all the time.
Also why are they ALWAYS signing stuff?
Yessss silent triumvirate communication.
“To live is always desirable.” I mean she’s not wrong but so much for being willing to die without a fuss lol.
It’s kind of wild how this ep started out being about a mining treaty and drama with the Klingons and all of this alien political drama and then basically becomes all about saving one (1) pregnant widow (and themselves) from huge, ,hostile aliens in funny feather boas.
Sulu insulting Scotty’s knowledge of ships lol. Not smart.
Can’t believe the Klingon couldn’t get his weapon back but Kirk got his communicators back no problem. Who is the smarter alien?
They’ll find us BY SCENT ALONE what a detail to just throw in there!
Lol this whole scene with McCoy and Eleen is hilarious and ridiculous in equal measure. Like I can’t entirely blame her for not wanting to be touched intimately by a strange alien man (rude!!) but also I do enjoy McCoy’s gruff insistence that he WILL care for his patient. This is what AOs didn’t get about “Grumpy Bones.” He’s not mean, he’s just...not up for niceties when he has a healing to do. He WILL care for you dammit!
And he has soft hands.
Spock is loving this.
Kirk’s subtle reverse psychology. “Well if you don’t think the communicator plan can work” and then Spock like “I didn’t say that exactly...”
They aren’t human, they’re humanoid!
And again, the subtle taunting/goading of Bones: “Well if you can’t do it...”
I’m a doctor, not an escalator! One of the best lines.
Detective Scotty. Kind of ridiculous how he solves the case of the taunting Klingons luring them away from the planet...but then sticks around a bit more just in case.
The child is McCoy’s!
Spock is so uncomfortable with this giving birth thing. “Oh look Captain, vegetation!”
“Just repeat ‘The child is mine.’“ “Yes, the child is yours.” Lol.
Arts and crafts with Kirk and Spock! I love that this is a McCoy ep with subtle space husbands in the background.
Favorite moment though is McCoy trying to teach Spock how to hold a baby. “I would rather not, thank you.”
“Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on...won’t get fooled again.”
I love that Chekov is consciously messing with them about everything being from Russia.
Also the absolute GALL of the Klingons trying the exact same ship luring technique a second time.
Can’t believe that Bones wants to go off and have fun with the boys and just leave the baby alone in the cave. You’re a dad now McCoy!! Be responsible!
“Small patient.” Yes very small!
Cool little robot battle station unfolding at the helm.
I feel like when Kirk and Spock have that exchange about cavalry coming over the hill and Spock says "if by that you mean..." Kirk should have answered, "I thought I just said that." But then that wouldn't be very Kirk of him. He never makes fun of Spock.
This Klingon is not having a good day!
Scotty and the redshirts here to save the day.
I guess Maab wasn’t so bad after all. And Elaan is perhaps a little confusing, but I admire her desire to both save herself and adhere to her people’s traditions, even if those are incompatible desires.
Spock absolutely IS going to consult linguistics about baby talk. Probably Uhura specifically.
LEONARD JAMES AKAAR. Absolutely one of the top 5 final bridge scenes. They really missed an opportunity to return to the planet in a later movie or series and interact with the Teer.Captain Picard meets Leonard James Akaar.
This was a good ep! I really only remembered the Bones and Elaan parts with the baby, so I forgot all of the political machinations and stuff in the beginning of the ep. It’s a pretty solid world building episode and of course, lots of McCoy, can’t go wrong with that.
I actually think it makes a lot of sense for Bones to be the child’s “father” tbh. Like, I know everyone thinks it’s funny but like... in our culture, we assign pseudo-parental roles to people who aren’t blood relatives of children based on the adult’s relationship with the child’s blood relative and that’s arguably weirder. Like you can be a kid’s step father by marrying his mom even if you really don’t have any relationship to him, so why shouldn’t McCoy, who saved Leonard’s mother’s life and delivered him, and convinced her to actually desire to raise him, be considered his “father”? ESP given that this society seems to have no place at all for fatherless children. They just can’t conceive of such a thing. So “father” has to encompass something other than, or not strictly limited to, biological father. She was so quick to assign McCoy fatherhood status, I have to assume this happens a lot, that people take on that role for non-bio children.
Not a lot for Spock to do today but I think he had fun. He got to explode some rocks and make some bows and shoot some arrows. And Kirk got into a lot of fights so I think he enjoyed himself.
I don’t know if I believed the Cappellans were 7 feet tall but they did look broad and alien so I will give them that.
It was nice to see Scotty in command again. I’m so mad at AOS still for making him comic relief. I think he’s actually quite a serious person. Talking with my mom, I’ve decided that the crew can be grouped into ‘cracks jokes through a crisis’ and ‘generally gets very serious in a crisis, reserves humor for calm moments’ and while Sulu, Chekov, and Spock are in group 1, Scotty is definitely in group 2 with Kirk and McCoy. (Uhura seems generally lighthearted and fun loving but not funny per se so I don’t know how to group her.)
Also this is one of the early filmed Chekov episodes (as you can see by the hair) and he spends it, again, at Spock’s station. It’s so obvious he was introduced as Spock’s protege, not as the navigator, which I think is very interesting. Like I want to hear the backstory on that.
Next week’s episode is The Deadly Years, which I remember as being very solid.

11 questions tag game!
THE RULES ARE SIMPLE
1. Post the Rules. 2. Answer the questions given to you. 3. Make 11 questions of your own. 4. Tag 11 people
Begin!
I was tagged by both @saawek and @jemariel, so I’m going to answer all of the questions together in one post. 😊 Thank you, lovelies!
1) How and when did you get into fandom/fanfiction/shipping?
Oh god. 😂 It all started when I was 14, playing Kingdom Hearts on Playstation 2, and one day I stumbled across some Roxas x Axel fanart on DeviantArt. At first, I was confused. Then I was intrigued. Then I was hooked and the rest was history.
2) What was your dream job when you were five years old, and why?
I always wanted to be an artist, probably until I was halfway through high school, and then I veered more towards writing. I haven’t drawn in years, I really wish I had kept practicing, because now I suck and can’t draw for shit.
3) If you had to only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would you eat? (Assume that nutritional needs will be met by this food.)
That’s tough… maybe ice cream? Am I allowed to eat different flavors? That might give me enough variety to keep me entertained.
4) Roughly how far from where you grew up do you now live?
I live about 140 miles/ 2 hours away from my hometown, so not too far, I go home to visit my mom every couple of months.
5) What’s your usual breakfast?
…coffee. I never eat breakfast, I don’t eat until lunch. I know, I know…
6) Cats or dogs? (Or other?)
Both! I have one of each! 😊 Although tbh, I’m more of a cat person, they’re a lot more low-maintenance and a little better suited to my two-job lifestyle, even though right now I’m lucky enough to have a great aunt who babysits my dog for me on the nights I work at my second job.
7) Favorite holiday?
Hmm, probably Christmas. I just like the feel of the season, even though I don’t really decorate or do anything too festive. I just like the Christmas atmosphere. You wanna hear a funny story about laziness though? The two tricks to never having to take down a Christmas tree are: 1) never putting it up in the first place (that’s my method), and 2) never taking it down (that’s my mom’s method, if I visit her house in, like, May, her Christmas tree will still be up, she literally just leaves it up year-round).
9) What is your ‘happy place’?
Probably just my house. I love coming home after work and decompressing in a quiet, empty house. As soon as I’m through the door, pajamas are going on, I don’t care if it’s only 5 p.m., and I hope I don’t get any visitors because I’m not answering the door for anybody.
10) Favorite song to sing when no one else can hear you?
I’ll sing anything… pop songs, Disney songs, showtunes… I go through phases where I’ll sing one soundtrack constantly for about a week at a time. People will pop their head into my office and be like, “Are you singing Beauty and the Beast?”
11) Would you rather be too hot or too cold?
That’s a tough one, I always change my mind depending on whether it’s winter or summer at the time!
1.Weirdest idiom of your language
It’s hard to choose, we’ve got a lot of weird idioms. “In a pickle”, “under the weather”, “when the fat lady sings”… who is the fat lady and why does she have to sing?
2.Fuck (or cuddle) Marry and Kill with : Godstiel, Demon!Dean, Lucifer!Sam
Hmmm…I’m gonna kill Lucifer!Sam (sorry Sam, it’s not you, it’s Lucifer), fuck demon!Dean (hooo boy, you know he’d be insane in the sack), and marry Godstiel.
3.Same question but with : Castiel, Sam or Dean (i’m not THAT sadistic)
AAAGH. This one is HARD. I guess…if I HAVE to choose… I would kill Sam (I’m so sorry, Sammy, I love you, I just don’t particularly want to fuck or marry you!), fuck Castiel, and marry Dean. Honestly those last two could go either way, but I picked marrying Dean because I feel like I have more in common with him, we could totally spend our lives together watching Star Trek, reading Vonnegut, and hitting up stripclubs.
4.What’s your zodiacal sign?
Leo, but I don’t feel like a Leo at all, it doesn’t really fit me.
5.Tell us an embarassing but funny moment you lived recently or years ago.
One of my friends loves to tell the story about my 24th birthday, two years ago, when I pounded back grapefruit vodka, margaritas, and limoncello, proceeded to whip my boobs out in the taxi, puked on the subway, and then when we went to a bar called “Sneaky Pete’s”, I spent the entire night calling it “Stinky Pete’s” and cackling about it. That night was full of regret and shame.
6.Which fictional characters do you most fancy (or find very attractive)?
Definitely Dean, of course. Deep at heart, I’m ultimately a Dean!girl. Cas is an extremely close second. I’m also pretty sweet on Spock. I’m sure there are more, but those are the big ones.
7.Destiel is now canon, do you mind?
Umm, definitely not. I’m probably rejoicing in the streets, drunk out of my gourd, crying tears of happiness on the shoulders of strangers.
8.You got an unlimited access to money and power, what do you do? (see question 7 to have some ideas on what to buy)
Are you suggesting I buy the CW? 😂 Because that’s…not a bad idea. I would also pay off all of my bills and student loans, and then do the same for everyone in my family. I would donate a bunch of money to my favorite animal shelter. Then I’d travel the world.
9.An urban legend or a myth around your area?
We actually don’t have any close for where I live. Not that I’ve heard, at least. I mean, there’s the whole Stull Cemetery thing, but that’s a couple hours away. My city is pretty boring on the urban myth front.
10.Why do I have to ask you 11 questions? It’s fucking hard.
“It’s fucking hard.” That’s what she said. Eheheh.
11.Can you give me a cookie?
I don’t have any cookies, I’m sorry!
Now, my 11 questions for YOU to answer:
1. What is the best compliment you’ve ever received, the one piece of praise that really sticks out in your mind?
2. Weirdest food/ food combination that you love?
3. What would your spirit animal/ totem/ patronus be, and why?
4. Favorite dirty joke (or clean is fine, if you prefer)?
5. If you cosplay/ ever got the chance to cosplay, which character would you be?
6. One of your bad habits?
7. A song that always makes you feel nostalgic?
8. How did you choose your tumblr URL?
9. Is love at first sight a real thing? What about true love/ soulmates?
10. The book/ poem/ fic that changed your life?
11. What is the one piece of advice that you think everyone should hear?
Now I’m tagging 11 cool people I’d like to know better: @aldehydean, @rosewhipped22, @threshie, @castielismyfavouriteangel, @robotsnchicks, @santamadredidios, @holamishamigos0, @beefcakemish, @60r3d0m, @casthewise, @goodtidingsdean

November 18: 1x24 This Side of Paradise
Today’s ep: the first, but not the last, instance of Spock’s inner hippie coming out.
Also another ep where Spock is wrong, again. “Absolutely zero chance of survival,” he says, minutes before they find survivors.
I see Spock just volunteered himself for the landing party.
Kirk is such a romantic. “Ah, there’s nothing sadder than a dream that’s died...”
Omicron Ceti III... that reminds me of something... could it be Futuruma?
(It is Futurama.)
“He’s alive, Jim.”
Sulu asking the important questions: is it possible they’re not alive? I mean given some of the ship’s prior adventures, it’s a valid possibility.
Ah-ha, Spock’s old... “friend.” Another hussy he’s cheating on T’Pring with. I guess he’s into blondes.
Kirk is so suspicious. He knows a romantic interlude when he sees it.
This settlement would be very popular today. Simplicity. Gardening. Happiness.
“I wouldn’t know what was right or wrong with a farm if it were two feet away from me,” Sulu says, while sitting right next to the danger plant. I love Sulu. He has such an easy, good-natured humor about him that I really don’t think is appreciated enough.
Spock’s still a Vulcanian, I see.
So he knew Leila 6 years ago... Only six? What was he doing on Earth then?
“It is said he has no feelings to give.” People love to gossip about Spock.
Kirk giving Bones the disk like “Ta-da, friend, I have anticipated your needs!”
I want to know how Bones broke two ribs. Barroom brawl?
“I missed you.” / “Logically, you should be dead.” Wow, what a romantic.
I think it’s interesting that he related his lack of emotions to being a scientist, not a Vulcan. He did that in the Naked Time, too, drawing on his identity as an officer when the space disease made him feel weepy.
Even though Leila is also a scientist.
“We’re vegetarians.” Lol Spock will fit right in.
I find it interesting that Starfleet has the authority to evict these people from the planet.
“It gives life, peace, love”--that doesn’t sound suspicious at all. Is it a drug?
Spock getting hit in the face with the spores is HILARIOUS.
She’s so surprised that suddenly feeling emotions hurts him--duh, he’s not human, so it’s different for him!
So is this Spock’s “inner face”? Ready to declare his love all at once?
“Would you like to use a butterfly net on him, Jim?”
I can’t believe Jim was halfway through his sentence when he was suddenly like “Where’s Spock?”
Spock’s seen a dragon? I bet he liked that.
I really like this romantic theme music.
This is absolutely the attitude adolescent Spock took with Sarek. “I don’t think so Sir.”
“I thought you said you might like him if he mellowed a little.” First, I love when Kirk and McCoy do this like ‘you said this’ ‘no I didn’t...’ thing. And second, they talk about Spock in their off time!
“The frequency is open but he doesn’t answer.” Leaving Jim on read I see.
Jim does not like this weird Spock, swinging from the tree limbs.
Lol Spock wants to “straighten out” Jim. That raging bisexual? Unlikely.
Spock is under arrest: the charges, silliness while on duty.
I love the creepy music they play over the plants. The music + the look of the plants is very invasion of the body snatchers. They just look alien.
Interesting that Jim is (partially?) immune.
I love when Bones gets really Southern. You can tell he really worked on toning down that accent, but this is his true self.
Oh no, Uhura took out communications, now it’s unfixable.
Plant on the bridge!!! So creepy.
Captain’s log: I’ve been bested by spores.
Spock is very interested in this “mint julep.” He knows what it is! It’s a drink! (He definitely had to ask.)
So the plants are, in fact, aliens. Traveling to space to reach this planet that they like very much.
“It’s a true Eden, Jim. There’s belonging... and love.” The two things Spock wants most!!
“I don’t know what I can offer against paradise.”
I can’t believe that after that long, sad soliloquy, Kirk gets hit in the face with spores lol. It’s just a funny visual!
Kirk’s little suitcase. Full of shirts. All the essentials.
And then... a random medal? I guess it’s there to show that even spored, Kirk still cares about his accomplishments and still has pride in them. Personality-wise, he just doesn’t seem as susceptible.
The getting-over-the-spores thing is a little...weak. Like I guess he just cares so much about the ship he can’t abandon it? The thought makes him angry and that kills the spores? A little weird.
And of course, he goes straight to Spock as the first person he wants to save, eve though that involves poking him to anger, which is risky. “Aroused, his great physical strength could kill.” Interesting choice of words lol.
“My mother was a teacher.” Spock doesn’t like mean references to his mom.
Also I guess this is the ep that canonically establishes Sarek as an ambassador.
Kirk has to work really hard and say a lot of very mean stuff to get Spock angry. (Unlike AOS Spock who just hears the words ‘your mom’ and is ready to throw hands.) (In his defense, she did just die.)
Also omg his parents are still alive! Stop talking about them as if they were dead!
“I don’t belong anymore.” Yes you do bb! On the Enterprise!
“Well if we’re both in the brig, who’s going to build the subsonic transmitter?” Impeccable logic. I feel like Spock set him up for that one on purpose.
“Enterprise” in McCoy’s thick Southern drawl.
I like that Spock changed back into his uniform first.
Jim is definitely jealous of Leila.
This Spock and Leila conversation... Really makes me curious to see Spock attempt a romantic relationship.
Saying “that man on the Bridge” is so much more dramatic than just saying “the Captain.” Like... so much more!!
“You couldn’t pronounce it” lol. I’m so glad this scene exists to make it clear that he has a last or family name and also that we will NEVER know it. I completely reject that dumbass fanon name, you know the one. It’s pronounceable! That means it’s wrong!
Hilarious that that’s the note they end on.
I guess Leila was over the spores there for a bit. But I still don’t really have a firm grasp on what her actual personality is. Everyone else’s seemed to change a lot while under the influence.
I feel like they kind of did start a 500 person brawl.
Glad Bones got his mint julep!
“Would you like to see how fast I can put you in the hospital?” I think you already put him in the burn unit!
I can’t believe he throws the mint julep away when the spores go away. Does he not actually like them?
This episode is very judgmental lol. Also, I know they’re humans, but it doesn’t seem in the spirit of the Prime Directive either.
What my mom calls Kirk’s Puritan work/strife values. True. He’s a Midwesterner but he’s a little Puritan too clearly. “Maybe we were meant to struggle” says the man who lives in a post-scarcity utopia.
I kind of feel like Spock DOES want to stroll to a lute.
And of course this whole “poetry” interlude is itself incredibly Dramatic.
“For the first time in my life, I was happy.” What?? No, stop being such a drama queen. Wasn’t seeing a dragon cool? Meeting Jim??
I don't know if I think the concept of just being happy and gardening to survive is so bad tbh. Like... I guess a part of me (the Puritan part?) does rebel at the idea of just being....blank and placid all the time, and never striving for anything. But like that was really the worst the spores did. There's no real explanation as to why it's bad, other than, well, it makes you not so ambitious. I'm very torn about the moral of the story.
Still overall, a very good ep. A good Spock ep--lots to think about re: his characterization, when I’m more awake. A very good Kirk ep, too.
Next is The Devil in the Dark. YET ANOTHER absolute classic. Season 1 really just keeps going at 100mph.
