I love Jac with Emma but it annoys me she has to sacrifice her career to be seen like a good parent. It's really sexist and it's especially annoying because it's not even clear what the custody agreement even is anymore, so we don't even know how much time a week/month she legally has to spend with Emma but the show is going to spin a story about her looking like bad mum. I know it's not that deep but tbh as a feminist and someone who was raised by a single divorced mum I don't like it.
I probably sound OTT annoyed in that other message sorry
i dont think you were ott at all, dont worry! i do agree with you, that single, working mothers aren’t inherently bad mothers and it definitely depends on how holby portrays the situation. like you said, we don’t know much about her custody agreement or anything, really, about how she spends her time outside of the hospital and that it probably will be a sexist storyline about how working mothers have to sacrifice their career for family, while 99% of the time, men do not. it’s annoying because we’ve watched her grow and cultivate her career right before our very eyes, from registrar to consultant and everything in between, and watching her take a step back from all that is going to be a struggle. i want her to keep growing professionally because it’s been a very important driving factor for her since we’ve known her.
however, i do think the situation is a little bit more nuanced than just “its a sexist sl” bc we’ll probably see from her point of view how she feels guilty about not being around as much as she wants to (and she might end up feeling esp guilty depending on what jonny’s situation is, ie. if his new wife is a stay-at-home mom) be. i think that’s a very real reality for a lot of working parents, as they’ve shown it before with fletch and how he wasn’t able to cope with his kids while working, and speaking from the point of view of someone who did have absent parents, it sucks when a/both your parents arent around because theyre working. i think there needs to be some balance and im interested in seeing how jac deals with that. like i said, jac has been very career driven from the start and now she’s forced to deal with how thats affected emma and their relationship
and personally, i do find this nice development for jac who would put her career before anything and has actually left emma for her career before (and there were other factors involved, obviously, so please dont take this as if i’m blaming her bc jonny really sucks) and i’m glad she’s now at a place, emotionally and mentally, where she feels that she’s able to take a step back from her work and focus on her daughter. jac had neglectful and absent parents, so i understand where he desire to be present and active in emma’s life comes from
but it’s really just going to depend on the writing. they could do a storyline like this well by coming at it from all angles and dissecting the nuances that come with it, or they could just fuck the whole thing up from the word “go” so we’ll see i guess
#sorry that this took awhile for me to respond to i couldnt figure out what to say lol#ask#Anonymous
