Modern Izzy would carry around a little purse (which he would insist is a ‘satchel’ or even a ‘messenger bag’) and, if you shake it, it rattles like a mfer cause its got all his OTC stomach meds in it (lactaid, gas-x, tums, pepto bismol, etc). Its also got ibuprofen and tylenol in it (the tylenol is for Ed, Izzy’s not gonna risk upsetting his stomach even more), hell probably midol too (transmasc Izzy, my beloved). And Ed’s ADHD meds, since Ed would lose/forget them. And probably an epipen and an inhaler, cause I think its funny, he’s already got tummy troubles and (I’ve decided) chronic migraines, may as well give him allergies and asthma too.

i had such mixed feelings about the pride controversy. Noxcrew could have done so much better and i would have expected them to do better. any random canon mcc has almost as much lgbt+ representation as pride did. I'd anticipated all of the regulars playing who'd wanted to, plus at least as many special guests. they couldn't even fit all of the regulars (illumina was originally left out despite having applied; still wonder if maybe krinios dropped out on his behalf). and don't get me started on how fucking icky it is that literally none of the lgbt+ regulars got to benefit with views or exposure* in a goddamn pride event, thanks to the youtube contract. i can forgive noxcrew for fucking that up once for the sake of charity donations. they'd better not do it again.

none of that makes the twitterati any less ridiculous, because it's not like they knew about it or even would have cared. (illumina who? what's a tapl? one month later: oh wait, tapl's taking the place of my beloved george? smite!) they want numbers without knowing or caring who the numbers even are. but i'm not sure the knee-jerk defensiveness i saw over the consequences of the youtube collaboration was helpful either

you make some good points tbf. i made a post about twitter's reaction back in june. im not sure if it makes sense now but i think it did when i wrote it lmao.

to be fair, i do agree that there could've and should've been more LGBTQ+ creators in mcc but like i said in my post in june, ultimately the idea of the mcc was to make as much money as they could for the trevor project (at least that's what i saw the main goal as). i do think that they probably saw it as being similar to last year's pride event where they had the usual regular players with the main difference from normal mcc's being that they donated money. also disclaimed now that no matter what i say later on in this i definitely agree that perhaps at least half of the participants should've been lgbt and it was a bit of a let down to see that there weren't as many as expected. again, not good with words i write things as i say them in my head and sometimes they don't make sense/sound a lot worse when written down than they do in my head LMAO

i give them the benefit of the doubt though: they were never going to be able to have a full roster of LGBTQ+ players even if they wanted to. scott admitted that he was limited with the players he could include because he needed to include all the people that youtube chose (the majority weren't lgbt but are really popular creators who would bring in donations), then his priority was people who could stream on youtube, then he would include any regular players.

you have to remember that illumina replaced krinios (who i'm not sure if they're part of the LGBTQ+ community but he does use he/they pronouns which may count for something? perhaps? i'm not too clued up on this pls help, and mainly they were able to stream) so it's not like illumina was left out for another person who was in the same position as him because krinios was technically higher in the pecking order because he could stream.

this could be an unpopular opinion but scott's teams were well made. he did okay (not well - he could've done better LMAO we all know that) in including LGBT players and especially well in including people who would bring in a large audience. people were pressed about techno being in there or not knowing who green were but they bought in A Lot of viewers which in turn would bring in a healthy dose of donations. he probably tried to balance representation with exposure of the event because the aim was to raise as much money as possible for the trevor project. he just got the balance off.

agreed that there were very icky vibes from the fact that a lot of the lgbtq+ regulars couldn't benefit from people viewing the stream but to be fair they do get that exposure any other mcc, and i do think that it was an equal swap - they got $100,000 from youtube for an lgbt charity. people have the opportunity to support those streamers on other occasions but it's not everyday you get the opportunity of getting such a large donation

i said it in my post in june yeah the twitter activity was absolutely absurd to me. it just felt like people were focusing an awful lot on the players who weren't lgbtq+ and less on the players who were. especially because a lot of people were protesting for players to be replaced with some of the dt?? realistically, if people wanted to support an lgbt streamer no matter who they were they could've watched mefs, squaishey, joey, scott, or any of the other players who are in the community and were streaming. they could support lgbt streamers any other time not during that mcc but it felt a lot like people were just using it as an excuse to protest for Something/anything. you said it well, "they want numbers" but as soon as they have as many as they deem adequate they go back to not supporting them and watching who they'd usually watch anyways.

gay rights are stored in the rat!!! i’m glad marchy has been pretty open about his support of LGBT stuff, particularly within hockey. also i feel like some of the stuff he’s said in interviews or social media (esp re: lickgate) manages, even if not intentionally, to be quite diminutive towards implicit homophobia or ‘toxic masculinity’ within hockey. okay maybe that that was poorly expressed but basically he just doesn’t give a shit and appears very open and accepting and i think that’s super nice. this picture also makes for a good reaction image when someone says something dumb

that’s my pest™. honestly i think lickgate is one of the best scandals in recent hockey history. when looking for a good image of this is saw an article where some dipshit reporter was outraged about it and was like “how would you feel if someone just came up and liked you?” i mean what if someone just came up and started punching you or hip-checked you into the wall????? hockey is a nasty game a lot of the time, and instead of giving people concussions or broken bones (not that he hasn’t in the past ik…) marchy managed to make opposing teams just as angry, if not moreso, just by licking players. i think it’s fucking hilarious. and most of them took it well in hindsight anyway - i think it was komarov who said he kinda liked it lmaoooooo. peak bradley kevin antics if you  ask me

brad waving the towel in surrender is just about the funniest thing i’ve ever seen someone do in the penalty box… i can’t believe they gave him a 10 minute misconduct for it, something i think they’d wouldn’t have done if it had have been someone else. at least someone in this league has a goddamn sense of humour. the penalty minutes stat in the corner just makes this even better

brad single-handedly keeps nhl refs in a job. in my bruins drinking game™ you have to take a shot every time the ref has to physically restrain marchy (2 if it’s because he was going to get revenge or fend for bergy) and you could get fucked off that alone during some games. it was nice to see him not actually get suspended this year, but i will always love that he’s such a physical player and quite the pest on the ice :))

i was not lying when i said more on the brad-torey social media antics earlier. there are some truly iconic chirps (the zamboni one is lethal), but this self-roast just kills me every time. i never once thought i’d read a tweet from the official brad marchand twitter account that opened with “hey shorty” but here we are. “my nose wouldn’t fit” i astral projected the first time i read that. and if you’re wondering what torey said to prompt this, it was simply “hey marchy”. it doesn’t take much for brad to light on you, huh? we better watch our backs

WELL it was an easy read and I finished the book already. I gotta do a classic Dani Vents About a Story post that will include significant spoilers, so be careful if you are reading/want to read The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargraves. I’m about to bitch about it a lot, but overall it was an interesting book that I’d still (mostly) recommend if you have an interest in historical fiction surrounding the Norwegian witch trials.

Most of it was really good, although a few theme threads and character arcs completely fell apart in the final act. I knew it was going to be dark-- again, 17th century witch trial shit-- but the actual “murder my favorite characters” bit thankfully didn’t begin until pretty late in the story, which lets the focus remain more on the lives of the women vs their horrific deaths. The author does a (mostly) great job at creating interesting characters you fall in love with, and succeeded immensely at bringing the landscape and village of Vardo to life.

BUT 

IN THE LAST LITERAL FOUR PAGES, THE NARRATIVE TOOK ALL THE MEANING THAT THE PROTAGANISTS HAD CREATED OUT OF THEIR HARDSHIPS AND THREW IT OVER A CLIFF (LITERALLY! & EACH USE OF THIS WORD HERE HAS BEEN THE PROPER USE. although i guess a fictional event cannot be truly ‘literal’ BUT WHATEVER I AM NOT GETTING LOST IN THE WEEDS WITH PEDANTICS). I am so fucking mad, and it serves as a reminder to why I typically don’t read/watch many period pieces these days, unless it is a period setting in a fantasy/sci fi world. So many people think that in order to bE rEaLiStIc when writing about periods in history, you simply MUST be as grimdark as possible, especially with conclusions, but I find that perspective boring and uncreative as hell. Bitch it’s already fiction! it’s already lies! you are god in the universe you write, have some courage and don’t concede to established tropes that center on garish suffering to define the experiences of historically (& contemporaneously) marginalized people! At least in a medieval-set fantasy story, you get the vibes of the historical setting, but also your friends can swoop by on a dragon and rescue the innocent pants-wearing fisherwoman who is about to be burned alive by the racist woman-hating church.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love a story with a messy & unhappy ending. I even love an occasional grimdark story! But as I get older, I see & feel more the evils which inspired these historical events and how they still burden our world today, and I do not enjoy spending my free time reading/watching movies that are centered on suffering for suffering’s sake-- if I want a story about senseless violence & the underdogs who never win, I will just turn on the fucking news. SO, for me, the dark stories I do enjoy cannot just be traumaporn in a difference shell, the darkness has. to. make. sense. You can’t spend 300 pages on a woman overcoming her grief of losing her brother/father/fiancé/half her village & learning how to be a #StrongIndependantWoman, then have her just kill herself on the last page. It just isn’t narratively good, it just isn’t! And to be clear, the author could have gone WAYYYYYYYY darker in many places throughout the book & did not even come close to going full grimdark. I think overall she greatly succeeded at balancing hope & hopelessness. It was done so well in fact that I was lulled into a false sense of security that maybe just maybe there might be a way out for our ladies, a conclusion that didn’t end with the kind of complete misery that historic fiction tends to skew towards. But there is this overwhelming sense in the final few pages that, probably due to the aforementioned loyalty to perceived “historical accuracy”, she hadn’t included enough suffering (even though there is PLENTY of tragedy to go around by that point) & she didn’t know how to finish the story. So when in doubt, kill 👏 those 👏 gays 👏 (although we don’t know the fate of the other woman, who has entire chapters given from her perspective, but Meren just says bye & we never hear about Ursa again 😤)

Which brings us to, yeah, it did have gay shit like I thought, and up until the garbage of the last four pages, it was a very touching romance. But it too concluded in a way that is only satisfying if you squint, and adds to the inconsistencies that I mentioned above. I’ve never in my life said this before, and it makes me ill to even type this, but, *sob* it probably would have been a better story if the two women had remained platonic friends and no touch-a the booba. I know a lot of people think I’m One of Those cringe queers who will read/watch absolute garbage just if there is a queer person (which tbf I definitely also do sometimes, & it’s actually very valid of me, thank u very much), but if that were true I would have finished that awful Warming Trend book that I blogged about like 2 years go, or read any of the hundreds of stupid “subtext” trash that folks like to recommend, or ship Supercorp (no offense to anyone who ships them, I get it, Katie McGrath is hot, but come on, there is a perfectly good lesbian already on the show), or watched Glee. No, I do actually have some standards--  Are they super high, as a love-starved reader/viewer who uses romantic fiction as a primary means of escapism/coping with my shitty life? No, lmao. But as a writer, and as a queermo, nothing grinds my gears more than a badly executed lgbtq+ storyline.

Anyway, I just finished the book an hour ago so my crankiness & disappointment is raw and thus I am all over the place with this rant. I hope I’m not coming off as being too hard on the author, because despite it’s flaws, I am very glad to have serendipitously found The Mercies, and I look forward to checking out KMH’s other works. It’s been a long time since I’ve dug into a book and read it in just a few sittings like I did this, repeating “just one more chapter” for hours until it’s suddenly 3 am, and despite the fuckery to my sleep schedule it contributes to, the feeling is good-- it brings me back to simpler times when I actually was able to experience an ease from the constant uneasiness I always carry in my chest. Idk, moral of the story is that reading is fun, & when I get stuck in my Bad Turns & don’t read for months, it becomes easy to forget how much solace can come from a mid-quality but seductive (not in a horny way. but sometimes also in a horny way, lol) novel. Like, most of my reading these days is miserable 20th century theory or other academic/non-fiction writing related to our depressing capitalist hellscape & impending climate disaster, and The Mercies helped me remember that my roots lie in fiction. It also has me inspired to revisit a couple of historical fictions projects I have laying around, aND MAKE A WOMAN-EMPOWERMENT, ANTI-RACIST, QUEER AS HELL PERIOD FICTION PEICE THAT DOES NOT END IN COMPLETE GARBAGE! And in the meantime, I shall be revisiting the works of Sarah Waters, the only bad bitch I know of who writes queer historical fiction without relinquishing her characters solely to the suffering they experience ✌ 

If anyone has read this far and has any books/authors to recommend (wlw focused preferably, historical fiction or any genre as long as the story itself doesn’t rely on the tropes I touched on, recently published also preferably bc I have a long list of older books/authors but i don’t keep up with new releases like I should, & a lot of the ones I know are white & cis so PLEASE send reccs for more diverse stories/authors if you have them)

i might also have some of the general dates/times wrong cause i’m not creating a literal timeline like it’s a fifth grade world history project lmao what the fuck is wrong with some of you.

last july, coming off an iffy may/june where a sizable portion of his fanbase were disappointed in the way he responded to blm (thought he took too long to post, then thought his post wasn’t good enough), he was papped in spain on vacation with ale, who may or may not be his gf (no one @ me i don’t care about your pr conspiracies). it was initially, like the buddha post, fine. lots of ppl sprinting to make fun of ppl hypothetically being jealous and immediately stanning someone they knew jackshit about, but mostly oh they look good together! and general thirsting.

about 2-3 days in, they started spreading rumors that she used the n-word, and whenever someone asked for a source, they’d get a vague oh i heard from somewhere/source: dude trust me. they also photoshopped a picture of her in blackface, but it didn’t pick up steam at the time (tho you’ll see it now referenced as one of the reasons she’s racist). one fan ended up going full opposition research on her, and went not only 2+ years back into ale’s ig, but also her friend’s, where she dug up a picture of her wearing...maybe a kimono? a more modern qipao? i’m not actually sure, the picture was from the shoulders up, and in the caption she had stated it was supposed to be geisha wear, but in a comment on her friend’s ig mentioned chinese girls. they deemed this cultural appropriation.

the fan immediately dropped this on twt like it was breaking news from the nyt, and then sprinted off to cover six degrees of sebastian’s phonebook, and started spamming the comments of about half a dozen ppl related to sebastian, but completely unrelated to the issue (including sebastian himself), stating not that hey, this is a little insensitive! but that they had “chosen the wrong person” because she’d already gotten it into her head that this had to be pr. tbf, there were ppl on twt that told her she should just stick to the actual issue if she believed there was one, but most of them immediately bandwagoned and started trying to trend #ripsebastianstan, and posting fancams to show how much they truly cared about anti-asian racism. they also joined her little crusade in harassing everyone that had nothing to do with this, including:

sebastian’s friend charles, who is asian (to truly cement that they cared about anti-asian racism) who ended up going private/changing his un

megan celeste, who coordinates a lot of sebastian’s charity work, who is also asian! (more activism for anti-asian racism!!!!!!)

this random lady they thought was sebastian’s manager but ended up being a fashion designer or smth that he’d worked with once 

they ended up spamming so much that ig blocked them from his (and maybe her account - tho i’m not sure if she just actually blocked them). they admittedly, reasonably, took this to be that he had purposefully blocked them, and started a #sebastianstanisoverparty on twt, where the comments were of course, filled with more fancams and stan ____ instead! because stan twt is nothing but truly devoted to activism. 

by the time the night died down i think some of them did realize it was a little weird to be demanding that he answer for smth she did, that happened years before he met her, and by this point they realized that they had been slinging misogynistic slurs at the “wrong” woman (the fashion lady listed above), so it was a little embarrassing? and just given the literal time and pace ppl were being blocked at, sebastian would’ve had to been awake for like 3 hrs from like 3am to 5am or smth, just to block about four ppl. 

the theory now was that it was someone from his team doing the blocking, and there was a lot of well of course he’s not responsible for that but he should still be held accountable (to which i saw someone ask one of the ppl very involved, so if you don’t think it’s fair to ask him to respond for smth he didn’t do, and you don’t think he blocked, then what do you want him to be accountable for, to which they literally responded “i don’t know”).

during this time, or maybe a few hours later, this stalker account of his on ig leaked his address, which they mostly all went immediately tried to disavow and pretend that they weren’t as involved and just wanted accountability with their fancams. and then two days later, everyone who said they were blocked by him were no longer blocked, so a lot of the anger they built up just had nowhere to go. so they turned and focused on his vacationing during a pandemic instead. 

at this point they had been aware for about a week that he was overseas, and they’d really not commented on it at all. there were a bunch of their other faves traveling too, but sebastian got the most heat for it, which i genuinely think was them trying to rejustify some of the insanity that occurred that night. this kept going for maybe a month? (during which they dug up more pictures of ale committing microaggressions) until two charities, both overseas, released pictures of sebastian volunteering with kids, which kinda put the traveling in a different light. 

there were still ppl who tried to position it as oh how could he put these kids at risk what a terrible person, except one of the charities was literally a hospital, and both charities ended up having to make a comment saying that yes they had followed all protocol, cause ppl kept harassing professionals at their jobs. and i think that took out a bit more of the anger they felt was justifiable. in the meantime, he and ale were probably still together, but sebastian was traveling for work filming tfatws (and she was just following him around? this is all secondhand, everything i know about her is against my will) and then they were seen vacationing in mexico and some of the anger came back, but i guess time had tempered some of it cause it wasn’t as big.

then there was just a long period of quiet where ppl stalked this woman’s ig and cried about how they had to see her posts when they were looking at them with their own eyeballs and don’t ask me to explain that i have no fucking clue either. he (and her for a bit maybe?) ended up permanently in la, and then tfatws aired, where sebastian got a ton of new fans and a lot of attention. 

and this is where my i think context matters from up above comes in, cause i think a lot of the initial ppl in july were very mad that he just didn’t suffer at all the way they wanted him too, and were very much waiting for smth to renew all of it. there were brief flashes of it when tfatws aired, but idk if ppl just didn’t latch onto the bait, or it just felt more like pointless your fave is problematic posts being pushed when they were all really excited about him and they just weren’t interested. but then he posted the buddha picture, stan twt is bored, and some of the july ppl made sure to keep pressing this time, and ta-da! here we are. 

anyway congrats if you made it this far, there’s probably stuff i forgot, but the general gist is this started from essentially bullshit, and unstan whoever you want, but i do think it’s important to note that the ppl behind this absolutely did not do it for genuine reasons.

a few days ago sebastian posted a picture of himself in character/dressed as tommy lee on ig posing next to a buddha statue, making an ambiguous face. (it's his latest post - i'd link it but i'm on mobile). for the first couple of hours it was fine, basically all his twt stans liked it and thirsted - the usual. ppl then started saying that it could be seen as problematic - the face could be mocking, maybe he shouldn't have taken a picture with it at all, but i think because it was very clearly as tommy lee, who practices buddhism, ppl didn't come down too hard on it even if they thought it was iffy (at least not that i saw, but i've also blocked all the most unhinged ppl from july).

there was some continued discussion the past few days about it, and i think it did bother some of those july ppl that he was "getting away with it" so they dug up everything he'd ever done wrong, most of which he addresed and apologized for, so they either pretended that he didn't, or that it wasn't good enough. and while some ppl did decide to unstan cause this was new info, it wasn't new to a lot of his fanbase cause they'd already at least gone through this in july (they did the same thing back then too) so they kept digging and found smth "new", in that we didn't know about it before, but it's from 2017. it's a video on ig that sebastian liked, of a radio host he knows discussing whether or not it's okay to say the n-word if you're singing it in a song it's in. i personally don't think it's clear why he liked it - i think three separate opinions are addressed in the video, and maybe it's just cause he thought it was an interesting discussion, but some are taking it to mean he thinks it is okay. you can find the video in his tags i think if you look, or if you don't wanna wade in there i'll link it in a couple hours when i'm on my computer.

Modern Izzy would carry around a little purse (which he would insist is a ‘satchel’ or even a ‘messenger bag’) and, if you shake it, it rattles like a mfer cause its got all his OTC stomach meds in it (lactaid, gas-x, tums, pepto bismol, etc). Its also got ibuprofen and tylenol in it (the tylenol is for Ed, Izzy’s not gonna risk upsetting his stomach even more), hell probably midol too (transmasc Izzy, my beloved). And Ed’s ADHD meds, since Ed would lose/forget them. And probably an epipen and an inhaler, cause I think its funny, he’s already got tummy troubles and (I’ve decided) chronic migraines, may as well give him allergies and asthma too.

… Probably also carries bandaids too. Man’s a walking pharmacy is what I’m saying.
