Ok, I have seen too much of the Dave Grohl/Taylor Swift drama and too many bad responses from both sides.
This does not involve the artists themselves. Dave made a joke at the London gig, and a group of Swifties have taken that joke he made, which was more of a dig at himself, and they have started attacking people.
Swifties, Foo fans, you do not need to engage the other side. This drama has gone on too long, and the artists involved could not give less of a fuck. Look at Dave, Dave has lost his best friend and bandmate, twice, he's lost his mum, he's suffered so much through his career. Dave respects other musicians, he's a respectful guy, but after an artist's fanbase has threatened his own damn daughter, it gets personal. But overall, Dave Grohl is a strong and wise man and he will get through it. You do not need to be rushing to a Twitter thread to attack a bunch of 14 year old girls, because what Dave has proven time and time again, is that he can look after himself.
Ok, now let's look at the other side of the debate, Swifties! Now, just to get one thing clear, is that I am not talking to all Swifties. I am talking about the ones who have said stuff like 'Kurt should have taken Dave with him' or threatening his fucking family. You guys do not need to be doing this. Taylor, like I said, does not give two fucks about this whole thing. She is a musician, and she's used to criticism. Also please, for the love of God, do not say Dave is being 'sexist'. This man was probably one of the most pro-feminism artists of the 90s, he supported all kinds of causes! But Taylor doesn't really care, she has come out and stated that she does have a live band who plays with her, which is fair, if someone faced incorrect information being spread, of course they're going to set it right. However you, reader, do not need to get personally involved. Taylor can set the record straight herself. She does not need to have a freaking legion of fans to her defense, because she can also look after herself. Now, let's look at Taylor's side. Taylor is a female pop star who emerged in the 2000s. She's had to face a lot of sexism, a lot of criticism and a lot of hate for what she's done. She is also strong, she has proven this, yet again. She had to face actual sexism in her workplace, not other musicians making jokes, and she knows how to set the record straight.
The more we carry this on, the more drama and divide we start. So you, reader, need to be just a tiny tiny change in the conflict. What you do could change people's hearts if you just lay down your arguments and make peace. This has gone on long enough and we need to try as hard as we can to make peace with the other side, Swifties and Foo fans alike. We do not need to keep arguing with each other over something our respective artists do not care about. So just leave it. Don't engage and if you already have, disengage.

13.145 Potential for Conflict
MONROE: Rest assured—you’re never very far from the forefront of any of our minds.
Luke’s first episode and it’s a good introduction to who he is. The more amusing part is Reg & Dave competing to be his second puppy-walker—and Polly getting the job in the end.
Dominic Power’s (Leon Taylor) second guest appearance this season.

Top Ten Aaron Taylor-Johnson Performances
Aaron Taylor-Johnson is no stranger to the spotlight. With his captivating performances and undeniable charisma, all wrapped up in that smooth accent, he’s quickly becoming a favorite among fans and directors alike. Taylor-Johnson is set to star in several highly anticipated films, including Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu (2024), Kraven The Hunter (2024), and the zombie apocalypse film 28 Years Later (2025). But that’s not all—rumors are swirling that Taylor-Johnson might bring his native swagger to the legendary role of James Bond. Will he join the ranks of actors who've donned the iconic 007 tux? We’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, if you’re craving some classic ATJ action, here are a few must-watch films: - Kick-Ass (2010) Taylor-Johnson burst onto the scene as Dave Lizewski in Kick-Ass. He’s sporty, stealthy, and refreshingly funny in this action-packed film that put him on the map. - Anna Karenina (2012) Joe Wright couldn’t have picked a better actor to play the Russian officer, Count Vronsky. Taylor-Johnson’s character spewed emotions and the conflicting waves of passion and conscience perfectly. - Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) Taylor-Johnson even blessed the MCU with his role as Quicksilver. He depicted the comic book character to the T, being the most realistic portrayal of Pietro Maximoff ever. - Nocturnal Animals (2016) Aaron Taylor-Johnson won a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as a grifter in Tom Ford’s neo-noir thriller. His character adds the perfect amount of eeriness, mystery, and intrigue. - Nowhere Boy (2019) Playing the co-lead vocalist of Britain’s sensational band, The Beatles, Aaron Taylor-Johnson did justice to John Lennon’s role in Nowhere Boy. Taylor-Johnson portrays the complicated, melodic singer with suave and conviction. - Angus, Thongs, and Perfect Snogging (2008) Rom-coms and Aaron Taylor-Johnson was a combination you didn’t know you needed. Starring as the main love interest, Taylor-Johnson showed his adorable side with adolescent charm. - Godzilla (2014) Monster films can go two ways. They are either amazing or they’re predictable. Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s role of Lieutenant Ford Brody was invigorating and his captivating charm added a lot to the feature. - Outlaw King (2018) Portraying Sir James Douglas, Aaron Taylor-Johnson has ditched perfection and is seen wielding a sword in full beast mode. - Savages (2012) Savages was a very different film for Aaron Taylor-Johnson. His eccentric role as a pot dealer takes a twisted turn in the action-thriller and he proves himself to be a versatile actor. - Tenet (2020) Although he appeared towards the end, Aaron Taylor-Johnson tied Christopher Nolan’s Tenet in a full circle with his commanding and not-funny-business presence. It made the film even more entertaining. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is nowhere near saying goodbye to 2024 without staring at some amazing movies. Netizens are jumping off their seats to see what this English actor has in store for them. Guess we have to wait. Read the full article

( short and sweet for your character to have room for your own story but i’d love: just two dirty agents who found some solid footing for a real friendship as they try to outsmart their targets. could be partners. could have absolutely hated one another when they first started working together - wayne’s tendencies to take the law as suggestion vs still needing to get the job done certainly provide every damn day with a new challenge. perhaps his partner isn’t all that dedicated to the FBI as he lets on and it causes some problems down the road. conflict, identity issues, scheming, confined spaces. if wayne has a bit of grown man yearning for his partner then that’s not something anyone needs to know about. he’s still figuring that out himself ! )

Summary:
The story takes place in the fictional world of Remnant, composed of four kingdoms (Vale, Mistral, Atlas and Vacuo), that are invaded by malevolent monsters known as the "Creatures of Grimm".[23] Prior to the events of the series, the world was overseen by two opposing deities, the God of Light and the God of Darkness. Humanity was obliterated by the gods, due to the actions of Salem, a vengeful woman cursed with immortality for trying to manipulate them into reviving her beloved Ozma. Ozma was subsequently reincarnated by the Gods to guide a new human race toward harmony and after succeeding, summon the gods back for judgement using four relics, the Staff of Creation, the Sword of Destruction, the Crown of Choice and the Lamp of Knowledge, leading to an endless conflict between him and Salem. The discovery of the element, Dust, triggered a technological and industrial revolution for humanity. The deity brothers themselves were born in the Ever After, a world that is the setting of the fairy tale The Girl Who Fell Through the World. They were created by the world's Great Tree to help it make the Ever After, with their first creations being the Curious Cat and the Jabberwalker, the brothers' differences and arguments forced the Tree to send them out of the Ever After, where they could create and experiment until they understand the true nature of balance, eventually leading to the creation of Remnant. The Curious Cat wished to leave the Ever After with Alyx, the main character of the story, and learn why their creators left, but she decided to stay behind and make up for the damage she had caused, breaking the Cat's heart and driving them to insanity who killed Alyx, with her brother Lewis returning to Remnant and telling the story as he wished it had happen.
In the present day, having formed a cabal to guard their world's secrets, one of Ozma's incarnations, Ozpin, establishes academies in the four kingdoms of Remnant to train Huntsmen and Huntresses against the Grimm, with each academies concealing one of the relics. The series focuses on four girls attending Beacon Academy in the kingdom of Vale: Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna and Yang Xiao Long. Together, they form Team RWBY ("ruby").[17][24] With their friends Jaune Arc, Nora Valkyrie, Pyrrha Nikos and Lie Ren forming their own team, JNPR ("juniper"). Ruby becomes the team leader and promises her friends to keep running their team. Blake reveals herself as a cat Faunus (a human possessing animal traits) and resigns from working with the White Fang organization. Cinder Fall, Roman Torchwick along with his assistant Neopolitan and the White Fang led by Adam Taurus, invade Beacon Academy. Roman is killed in the chaos. Yang loses her arm after seeing a conflict between Blake and Adam. Cinder becomes the Fall Maiden, and kills Ozpin and Pyrrha. Ruby defeats Cinder with her Silver eyes, forcing her and her minions to retreat.

brief summary: you grew up with david, and he always wanted there to be more than just friendship between you both. however, now adults and david is dating someone else, you coming back into his life causes him to have doubts about what he wants. (1.8k)

“Are you sure you don’t want anything?” You call out as you gather your things in the kitchen, your back turned to the guys as David sighs quietly to himself.
Ilya can’t help but roll his eyes at David’s lovesick expression that remains plastered across his face whenever you’re around. “Dave,” Ilya slaps his chest, causing David to snap out of his trance.
“No!” David blurts out, and you turn around quickly.
“Okay,” You nervously chuckle, thinking nothing of it as you head towards the front door. “I’ll see you later.”
With that, you close the door behind you, and David groans loudly as he buries his face into his hands whilst Ilya and Zane share a knowing look.
“Dude, you gotta get it together.” Ilya states as David shakes his head in his hands. “It’s only Y/n, we’ve known her since High School.”
“That’s the problem,” David mumbles. “it’s Y/n.”
It was true, David had known you for many years but for at least half of them he was sort of (most definitely) in love with you whilst you remained oblivious to it. He grew up alongside you as you had boyfriends, was the shoulder for you to cry on after a breakup and one of your best friends. Yet, David always wished he could’ve been something more.
There had been moments between you both, flickers of something more than just friendship, but nothing came of them.
Yet, David had moved on and was happy. At least, he thinks he’s happy until you walk into any room he’s in with your bright smile and joyful laughter; before he realises David’s back in High school, pining after his best friend.
“Look, David, you have a girlfriend.” Zane states, knowing Taylor is out of town currently. “You can’t be drooling over Y/n like this.”
“I know, I just,” David sighs as he thinks of you, knowing he should think of Taylor in that way. “whenever she’s around I just forget any other girl exists, and I just want to be with her.”
Ilya rolls his eyes once more. “God you need help.” He mutters as he rises to his feet, clapping his hands together as both David and Zane look up.
“What are you talking about?” Natalie speaks up as she walks through into the open space with Todd by her side.
“About David and Y/n.” Zane motions to David who simply shrugs his shoulders meekly at Natalie’s raised brow.
“She finally tell you then?” Todd smiles brightly, unaware of Natalie’s eyes widening. “Why’re you all looking at me like that?” Todd asks as wide eyes stare at him from across the room. “Oh no.” He mutters.
“Oh no is right.” Natalie remarks.
“Y/n likes David?” Ilya asks, sounding astounded by the idea as he looks over at David and back to Natalie. “You sure?”
Natalie sighs before nodding. “She has for a while now,” Natalie starts, and David falls back down into the sofa, his mind dazing over in shock as Natalie continues. “but then David started dating Taylor, so she felt like her chance was gone.”
“Okay,” Ilya begins pacing around the room. “so, Y/n likes David, David likes Y/n, but David also likes Taylor.”
“Thank you Captain Obvious.” Natalie mutters. “Look, David, you gotta sort this.”
“But how?” David asks weakly as he looks around at his friends before Ilya’s face lights up.
“I’ve got an idea.” Ilya smirks as he rushes out of the room, returning with the portable whiteboard. “We make a pros and cons list.” He suggests, ignoring Natalie shaking her head.
“Ilya, that is a terrible idea.” She tells him, but Ilya chalks it up on the board instead.
“Actually, it might not be that bad.” David comments, now standing up as he approaches the whiteboard and twiddles the pen in his fingertips as he eyes the pros and cons list. “If I can think of more cons, then I’ll know she isn’t right for me and Taylor is.”
“Your logic is so fucked.” Todd looks down to Natalie who remains silent, hoping that something will come of this for everyone’s sake.
*
Exhaling deeply, David stands back as he admires the board completely covered in the pros and cons of possibly dating you. “I never realised there could be so many.” David half laughs, now feeling more conflicted than ever before.
“Yeah, this is way harder than I anticipated.” Ilya comments, resting his hands on his hips. “Anyway, wanna order food?”
David nods as he walks out from the room, going to grab his phone whilst Ilya heads into the bathroom.
Both remain unaware as the front door opens, and you walk in with bags in hand. “God, it was crazy out there.” You huff, placing the bags on the kitchen counter. “Even though you said you didn’t want anything, I got you guys Starbucks!” You call out, picking up your drink as you notice the whiteboard out and covered in writing.
You can’t help but be intrigued by the board, and as you read over it, your heart drops. The board is about you, your pros and cons in David’s eyes.
“Y/n,” Ilya speaks up softly, emerging from the bathroom as he sees you standing there, trying to force back tears in your eyes as you remain still, gaze fixated on the board. “I can explain, we can explain.” Ilya starts, but you hold your hand up, silencing him.
“Ilya, I ordered pizza from-” David’s voice becomes closer until he’s stood metres from you and his smile drops instantly. “Shit.” He mutters. “Y/n, I, you weren’t supposed to see this.”
A light scoff leaves your lips as you step backwards, glaring to David. “Gee, I wonder why.” You retort. “You’re unbelievable David.” Your voice softens as you turn around, grabbing your bags from the counter and leave without saying another word, too afraid of your own voice and what will be said.
“Fuck!” David yells, gripping his hair in his fists as he groans loudly. “How could you do this to me, Ilya?!” David shifts the blame to Ilya who stares, utterly dumbfounded.
“I wasn’t the one who wrote the fucking list, David.” Ilya reminds David. “You gotta talk to her, man.”
“I,” David starts, but Ilya stops him.
“No, I mean right now.” Ilya states firmly, pointing to the front door. “Go, you idiot!”
Without needing to be told a third time, David jogs over to his front door, opening it and thankfully, you’re still loading your shopping back into the car as you wipe your eyes repeatedly.
“What, David? You wanna tell me about my pros and cons?” You speak up, slamming your boot shut as you near your car door.
“No, I, I wanna explain, as it wasn’t fair you saw that. It wasn’t something you should ever have seen really.” David begins to try and explain, but seeing you so upset, it causes his mind to fall apart. “Y/n, I, I know we’ve always been friends, and I’ve always cared about you- which you knew already.”
“Thought I did.” You mumble to yourself, causing your heart to ache even more.
“But I gave up the possibility of us ever being together a while ago, and then I met Taylor.” David tries to sound happy about his relationship, that it’s a good thing that he moved on. “Before I knew it I was swept up in this new relationship, and then you came back from your trip, and my feelings kinda dug themselves back up and you’re all I can think about.” He half laughs, realising how ridiculous it all sounds.
“David, don’t, please.” You tell him, now opening your car door as you lean against it, but David simply steps closer.
“Y/n, I can’t help how I feel about you, and I know you feel the same.” A nervous smile crosses his lips as you stare blankly at him. “Todd told us, and that’s kinda what caused all this. We were trying to figure a way of trying to decide if we should date, and it was so fucking dumb as I already know you, and I know you’re close enough to perfect.” David laughs light-heartedly. “And I’m so sorry I hurt you Y/n, just please, give me a chance?”
Silence falls between you both as you remain lost in thought. And then, you break it as you exhale quietly. “You’ve got Taylor, David. I can’t do that to her.” You force a small smile, ignoring the tears that fall down your cheeks. “Maybe we just weren’t to ever be.” You chuckle, forcing back pain in your voice as you climb into your car.
“Taylor broke up with me.” David blurts out, just as you’re about to close your car door.
“What?” You ask, staring up at him as he stands in front of your door.
Lowering his gaze, David tries to keep himself composed. “She broke up with me before she left. She knew something wasn’t right between us and didn’t want it to carry on and get messy.”
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?” You can’t help but ponder over why he never spoke up, listening along with stories as you all sat together in his house and would leave to speak with her. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because all I want to do is kiss you, Y/n.” David admits. “I want to be there with you in the mornings, make breakfast or try to at least. Sing shitty songs in the car and film dumb TikTok's together. I just wanna be beside you, and finally, let myself love you after all these years.” David confesses, feeling a weight lifting off his heart as he finally looks at you, seeing you focusing back at him.
“Wow.” You breathe out, now rising to your feet as you move past your car door, closing it as you stand in front of David. “You actually love me?”
David laughs quietly. “I think I always have, weird right?”
“Super weird.” You chuckle. “But kinda cool, cause I think I’ve always loved you too.”
“Oh,” David stumbles over his thoughts, as you lift your hand up, resting it on his shoulder. “that’s pretty cool. So er, what now?” He asks.
Running your hand along his shoulder, you move your fingers across to the back of his neck. “This is usually the part where you kiss me.” You mutter, smiling shyly to him as he nods.
“I think I can do that.” He whispers before resting his arm around your waist, tugging you closer into his embrace as his lips ghost yours. “I love you.” He breathes out as his lips part.
“I love you too.” You mumble back, finally allowing yourself to open up after all these years, never thinking dreams could come true.

There are so many things I'm excited about and looking forward in Season 5.
What will they do to JLove's character Maddie? We know she's suffering from PPD and the show left it at that in 4x14 - an indication that the Maddie's PPD story will continue in Season 5. What I'm worried about is that JLove's heavily pregnant. I don't think she'll risk it going to Fox studios to work even if she's fully vaccinated. And knowing Jloves pregnancy history, she always takes acting hiatus after giving birth. I just wish they won't kill her character. I couldn't imagine Buck and Chim's life without Maddie now that they just had a baby. Maddie was Buck's rock all this time and killing her would change everything about Buck. I don't know I'm just worried of her character.
Albert and Ravi. So assuming Albert joins the 118 and Ravi is still the Probie that he is at the firehouse, I can't wait to see their work dynamic. I think the show's trying to make them the young and new Buck and Eddie. Imagine Chim is always on the edge and almost suffers heart attack every time Albert's doing something stupid a la Buck.
Taylor Kelly. Okay, I like her character before and I love her character now and her job is relevant to a show like 9-1-1. I just wanna see how she'll fair as a standalone character outside Buck's shadows. I think her deserves it.
Christopher, Denny and Harry scene. God, I would love to see them playing and goofing around while Buck and Eddie's looking after them. Imagine the chaos, the mess and the stress these idiots (Buddie) will have to endure.
Buck and Baby Jee-Yun. Oh please. It was a mortal sin they didn't show a scene where Buck was holding his niece in season 4 finale. It needs to happen in 5x01.
More of Michael and Dave.
Eddie and Ana's interactions and their dynamic as a couple. I wanna see Ana's perspectives on parenting and on how to handle Christopher and his needs. God, they've been together for almost a year and we haven't seen them kissed. I don't need a sex scene. God forbid, NO! I just wanna see more of their dynamic as a couple and I thought it's important for Eddie's growth not just as a character but on how his grown to be a partner that he failed with Shannon - IF, they will make him grow that way. I mean, Eddie's kind of bad connecting to his wife Shannon and slowly with his girlfriend Ana but he has no problems connecting with his partner Buck even if they started at the wrong foot.
Buck and Taylor's dynamic as a couple. Now I'm excited about this. How far would Taylor understands Buck's dangerous job. How much would Buck Willing to give on his new relationship.
Taylor and Ana's reaction (or the whole of 118 including Maddie and Athena) of Eddie's will (Making Buck as Christopher's Legal Guardian if something bad happens to Eddie)
I'm so drowned of Fanfics' movie nights plot but we haven't seen an actual scene of Buck and Eddie with Christopher together watching a movie. Hopefully they're generous enough to give us that.
118 conflict. Nah, just for the sake of drama. Like during a call, one or two of them didn't comply to their Captain's orders that it almost killed them all in the process. I wanna see Hen and Chim Angst for a change.
May and her new apartment.
Josh dating again.
Buck and Eddie. After everything that happened and Eddie's revelation, how would it affect their friendship, their dynamic. How would it affect Buck's and his job? I wanna see Buck and Eddie Heavy Angst and this time, it's Buck's turn to get real pissed at Eddie.
Buck/Taylor - Eddie/Ana double date. Yep, that needs to happen.
Bobby and Athena on a vacation.
Karen's finally pregnant.
And finally, a character death. I don't know I think it's about time for the show to brave it whether we like it or not. It doesn't have to be a major character though. Not yet. Not ever.

You're right (I hopee), I just needed to calm down and process it. I was going to into this ep already expecting the worst but holy hell that was shocking! pleaseeeee CRWBY! Us penny fans have suffered enough. To make this ask not useless what was your favourite part of the ep?
tbh if it was death it could have been said a little more differently, maybe Penny could have even said goodbye instead of “I love you”. but tbh I’m actually more worried about what the hack itself could do to her -- I hope that at most, her systems rebooted simply because of an overload -- a fight between her will and that of the hack. I hope it doesn’t damage her core or something (in which her memories might get affected--) okay i’m gonna stop there I’ll make myself sad again
But anyway! Favorite part of the ep??? Goooosh. There’s a LOT. I mean, this entire episode has got to be one of my personal favorite episodes like that of the V7 finale. Everything I wanted between Pietro and Penny actually happened and I can’t believe it omg. I always wanted Pietro and Penny’s familial relationship to be explored, and Pietro outright admitting how much he cares about Penny is just, wow. The whole conflict between Pietro and Penny’s intentions -- it’s very understandable, very relatable. Pietro is a parent, and this whole episode just nailed that. Who wouldn’t be afraid that their child is out there carrying the burden of the world on their shoulders? Sure, Penny might have been made as a weapon but Pietro wanted her to live as a person. The parent-child conflict felt like the typical problems real families experience when their children are growing up and making big decisions on their own. Pietro wants to protect his daughter by overriding her autonomy (like look how he originally deflected the conversation about it) but obviously Penny doesn’t want to be treated like she can’t make decisions of her own anymore. (Their expressions when Penny told Pietro that she could fix the broadcast problem by holding Amity in place for a bit was quite amusing to me because it’s the typical faces of a parent and a child arguing)
Also another part I absolutely loved was when Penny’s last words to Pietro was “I love you”. I mean, this was the first time we ever hear Penny say those words. I think she only got to understand that she could actually love people especially after Pietro’s outburst of caring more about Penny than the mission. I feel like Penny never quite understood the element of love up until that moment, and it was that moment that solidified her will to do everything for the mission.
Other than that -- everything. Everything about this episode really. The moment she became Atlas? Heck, that was fucking amazing. The visuals were fucking stunning. And the moment she fell like Icarus? Oh god. Oh god. And the montage of characters? It totally convinces me we’re going to have an Avengers-like showdown in V8.
Maria was also such a great character this episode. Like, she was the “voice of reason” in a way, especially her words to Pietro regarding people always controlling Penny’s decisions. AND YES WE GOT TO SEE HER FIGHTING.
Tbh the fight with Cinder also terrified the fuck out of me. Penny screaming a lot? Pietro watching Penny suffer these burdens? Gosh just shoot me dead now. Also we got to see how Penny sees the world -- her adorable visual interface -- I think it would have a significance later on, maybe.
Also big kUDOS to Taylor Mcnee (Penny) and Dave Fennoy (Pietro) like WOW just WOW the voice acting was so superb this episode. If anything, Penny’s last “Dad!” when she was getting hacked really got to me. You can absolutely feel the terror and her asking for help because she was confused on what was happening. It still haunts me.
So yeah that was long but this episode was just *chef’s kiss*

Tagged by @dreamcatcherjiah who’s literally a sweetheart
1. What do you prefer to be called name-wise?
I’m just Brenna :)
2. When is your birthday?
Sept. 22
3. Where do you live?
Western USA
4. Three things you are doing right now?
Finishing up stats hw, writing a Jin fanfic that I’m literally so excited to show ya’ll, and listening to “Drifting” by Nick Box which is an instrumental piece but sooo pretty. Good writing music.
5. Four fandoms that have peaked your interest.
I’m always interested in LOTR lol. Kinda getting into Monsta X, currently obsessed with the Dark Knight Batman, and idk I guess I’ve been rewatching all the Harry Potter movies with my roomies so delving back into that?
6. How has the pandemic been treating you?
Honestly, not bad. Life is a little different now but I’ve found out a lot of things about myself and kind of been able to reprioritize a few things in my life. So a blessing in disguise?
7. A song you can’t stop listening to right now?
“Changed” by JP Saxe.
And “Outro: tear” because if I go a day without listening to that masterpiece I might die.
8. Recommend a movie.
Fantastic Mr. Fox
It’s weird (I mean it’s Roald Dahl) but honestly fun to watch if you’re into how movies are made like I am.
9. How old are you?
22 ayyy
10. School, university, occupation, other?
Working on a degree in *drumroll* Human Development and Family Studies with an emphasis in Finance! woooohooooo
11. Do you prefer heat or cold?
Cold. As long as there are fuzzy socks involved. I lived in Mexico and experienced heat from hell so I’d rather not you know?
12. Name one fact others may not know about you.
I honestly love cooking. Especially meatballs. idk why.
13. Are you shy?
lol no not really
14. Pronouns?
She/her
15. Biggest Pet Peeves?
Oof when people put themselves down. Drives me nuts because literally everyone has such a bright potential whether they see it or not.
Also, credit cards. Don’t even get me started on those abominations. Just go look up Dave Ramsey or something and see what he has to say about it.
16. What is your favorite “dere” type?
Not really into any of that so idk
17. Rate your life from 1-10, 1 being crappy and 10 being the best it could be.
Probably a 8.75. Life is still life with its challenges, but I just feel like I’ve been ridiculously blessed and lucky all throughout, even in the hard times. Keep smiling people!
18. What’s your main blog?
You’re looking at it ;)
19. List your side blogs and what they’re used for
I used to have one that was literally exclusively LOTR stuff. I haven’t used it in a hot minute...not even sure it still exists.
20. Is there something people need to know about you before becoming friends?
Guys, I’m an enneagram 8. Take that as you will. But I’m a wing 7 if that helps? So I’m not too intense I think lol. Jk, I kinda am. But I think it helps my writing...? Basically I just really love life and want everyone to succeed, I don’t really shy away from conflict however I try not to incite it...and yeah. Also, BTS is life. I love ot7, that’s why I try to include them all in my writing because it just feels like something is missing when they’re not all included in some way.
I have 3 biases. Jin (love of my life), Namjoon (I mean, who isn’t in love with that man?), and Hobi (he’s my spirit animal, I kid you not.)
Tagging @taylorroe3 @agustneeds and @eusticenatalie no pressure to respond, although I would like to see your answers Taylor. ;)

hey kirri, i just read taylors interview for that magazine (ive been a ff fan for years now) but there's something that bothers me, everytime they (the Band) describe how studios sessions are like they make it explicit that theyre following daves lead, idk, "its hard to impress him" in kind of a melancholic contexto, idk if you get what im saying and i know in my heart that dave is a lovely guy buy sometimes it feels like the others just follow and dont create+
And we are listening this from taylor, the one closest to him and even taylor is like “we record what he wants it to sound like” idk is dave is that strict but thats the vibe i get, where i dont see like rami being confident enough to say like “hey man i wrote this and this, me and the other guys were doing this without you”… idk, do you feel me?
Hey, hi, how you goin’? I get what you’re saying and it’s really easy for the take-home message to be that Dave is running the band like a musical sweatshop. Remarks like that do give you a sense of the pecking order in this band, and in a way, it’s accurate: It’s Dave’s band and they are recording and performing the songs as he sees fit. He owns the band’s business entities and writes the cheques. But this doesn’t mean they are mere hired hands - each has an important role in the band and can give feedback or make suggestions, except Dave has the final say.
His closest collaborator in the band is Taylor and they have worked on demos on their own before taking them to the rest of the band. Taylor has no illusions about making this his record, though - nor do the others. They’ve got their own projects when they want to go outside and play. It’s a Foo Fighters record, with its own distinct feel and parameters, one of them being that Dave assumes the role of songwriter and therefore knows what it’s meant to sound like. With that being said, even though Dave wrote it, publishing and royalties are shared between all of them. Although the composition is his and he has the right to veto ideas, he recognizes the rest of the band for what they contribute to the finished song. They do experiment in the studio, too, and if Dave likes it, it makes it in. It’s a simple, conflict-free process (and we know how much Dave hates conflict).
It’s like most jobs - you have your expected duties and after some time, you might spot opportunities for advancement or ways to do your job better, but the decision comes down to your manager, as the person who is ultimately responsible for the team’s performance.
Dave is the boss but is also a team leader, collaborating with the group, providing direction, and motivating them. Because of this, none of them bemoan the band’s structure, because everyone knows what they’re there to do and where they stand. It’s that clarity that makes it work and creates harmony within the group. I think it’s just from the outside that we read these quotes, remember what happened with William, and start worrying about the balance of power, when they themselves say it works for them. If they didn’t have a bullbar taking all the knocks for them, they might not be here.
Chris: “This band works because it’s not a democracy. People can read into that what they want – but it’s a big reason why the band hasn’t broken up.”
Nate: “We don’t have them (arguments). It’s good and bad. Dave has got the final word on everything. In a way, what’s there to argue about?”
Taylor: “Let it be known that it’s not Dave putting that pressure on anyone. It’s the kind of pressure anybody puts on themselves when they’re up against something that’s going to be hard. We all are lucky as hell to be in this band.”

Hey have you heard these 50 songs from 2019
I really enjoyed this last year so going to give it another go for ‘19. I put quite a lot of thought into what actually a ‘song of the year’ for me when I was first constructing and then heavily editing the playlist that came to be my Top 50 of 2019. I think the most important thing is that above all it’s a track that I’m glad exists, sometimes this is because of the songwriting or composition, sometimes the performance, sometimes the lyrical importance and sometimes just because it sparks joy.
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6bFJOjL8b8Zc2s5r1oJbsk?si=UJdqSXOTR3SQ8D3IwcmV2g
Explanations for each tracks inclusion below the fold…
100 gecs - 800db cloud 100 gecs channel a mix of Crystal Castles and Sleigh Bells with a Death Grips level appreciation for noise. It’s an absolute rush and that outro is just absurd.
Natalie Evans - Always Be Natalie Evans soft melody and sing song vocals are sublimely sweet on this heartfelt track of lost love, longing and nostalgia.
Petrol Girls - Big Mouth “If you fight back or disagree you’re the one with the fucking problem” this hits home, hard. Big Mouth is a rallying cry to speak out against oppression and discrimination, to raise you’re voice and be heard, not to be controlled.
Charli XCX ft. Lizzo - Blame it on your Love Charli has a midas touch when it comes to pop, combine that with Lizzo who has just about been the most fun thing in music this year and you’ve got a 10/10 banger.
Poppy - BLOODMONEY Poppy’s music just keeps going further down the rabbit hole. Originally playing with blending elements of nu-metal with bubblegum pop, she now seems to have transcended genre altogether to create whatever BLOODMONEY is, it’s absolutely ridiculous and I love it.
Body Hound - Bloom Get on that GROOVE! So proggy it hurts, this track from Body Hound is a technical wonderland of metamorphosing rhythms, gargantuan riffs, and just the tastiest of chord progressions.
Can the Sub_Bass speak - Algiers Word of warning, this is not an easy listen. A freefall tumble through genre and tone accompanies a stream of consciousness monologue full of racism, prejudice and political and artistic critique.
Elohim - Buckets Buckets is an onslaught of trap influences, emotional outbursts and aggressive distortion. I’m a big fan of this sound.
VUKOVI - C.L.A.U.D.I.A I know very little about VUKOVI as a band, but that riff is absolutely massive and this track has been a constant throughout my year on that basis alone.
Show Me The Body - Camp Orchestra Apparently more hardcore bands should use Banjos, because this is a damn good sound. Slowly building from a single bass line this track builds into a powerful demolishing force.
clipping. - Club Down Having thoroughly proven themselves able to do afro-futurist scifi on the Hugo nominated Splendor and Misery, clipping. now turn their considerable talents to horror core and unsurprisingly nail it. Daveed’s flows are tight as ever as he brings to life a decaying city backed by tortured screams.
Dream Nails - Corporate Realness YOU ARE NOT YOUR JOB. WORK IS NOT YOUR LIFE. YOU ARE NOT WHAT YOU MUST DO IN ORDER TO SURVIVE. Dream Nails are great and exactly what we need right now.
ControlTop - Covert Contracts This track positively bristles with an anxious energy. A fitting sound for the subject of the information overload we find ourselves locked into everyday.
Cherry Glazerr - Daddi There’s an icy coolness to ‘Daddi’, a disconnected sarcasm that falls away to reveal the anger and torment in the chorus, it’s a masterful bit of emotional storytelling through musical tone.
The Physics House Band - Death Sequence I Listening to Physics House latest release, the Death Sequence EP feels like a physical journey. This opener is a perfect example of this, as you’re plunged straight into a heady and disorienting mix of rhythms and counter-melody’s, the Sax guiding you through the turbulence until you land in a placid midsection, before that bass riff drags you forward through rhythmic breakdowns into an absolutely absurd brain melting saxophony and then it just keeps on going from there…
Witching Waves - Disintegration I saw WW back in the early summer, they were a bassist down so it was just a guitar and drums duo. They started with this track and it was one of the most pure punk things I’ve experienced, drummer/vocalist Emma Wigham bashing the absolute shit out of her kit . A great no-nonsense lo-fi banger.
Lingua Ignota - DO YOU DOUBT ME TRAITOR Another, not particularly easy listen here. DO YOU DOUBT ME TRAITOR is a dark and angry brooding track, building in intensity to release the primal rage, fear and horror of the abused. Its deeply chilling and instantly arresting. This track and the entire CALIGULA album stands as an absolute must listen.
Carly Rae Jepsen ft. Electric Guest - Feels Right I love the instrumentation on this one, those chunky piano chords and screaming guitar lift the track out and make it the highlight of an already great album to me.
Orla Gartland - Figure it out Dialing back the intensity slightly, Orla chronicles the frustrations of having to deal with someone in your life who you’re done with. The choruses burst forth in beautifully fuzzy explosions of noise. That vocal flair at the start of the final chorus is chef kiss.
Battles - Fort Greene Park Battles are at their best when they keep things simple. This is evident on 2019′s Juicy B Crypts which features some incredibly cluttered moments, but this just makes Fort Greene Park stand out all the more. A delightfully spacious piece of math rock, from some of the best in the business.
Dogleg - Fox Boy howdy, do I love me some midwest emo. Catharsis in musical form, it just makes me want to mosh my troubles away like I’m 16 again.
Tørsö - Grab A Shovel Tørsö go hard, I can appreciate that. An absolutely brutal track about the destructive power of depression and self-loathing.
“Pijn & Conjurer playing Curse These Metal Hands” - High Spirits “We were like, are we Pijn and Conjurer, or are we Curse These Metal Hands? I think we’ve settled with ‘we are Pijn and Conjurer playing Curse These Metal Hands’ …whatever that means!“ what it means is one of the most joyously triumphant pieces of metal music I’ve ever heard. Some of the guitar lines in this absolutely soar.
Lizzo - Juice Lizzo has won 2019, her message of self love, acceptance and body positivity has won her both critical and cultural acclaim and permeates her music in a way that makes it impossible to not love.
COLOSSAL SQUID, AK Patterson - Kick Punch Colossal Squid is the name given to Three Trapped Tigers drummer, Adam Betts’ experimental project. After a solo album of percussive wizardry Betts has now teamed with vocalist AK Patterson to give us something else entirely.
Evan Greer - Liberty Is A Statue Evan Greer uses the a folk punk sound to deliver an essay on the damaging influences of cis-normativity and social inequality. Of course I like this one.
Taylor Swift - Lover I wasn’t on board with this song for a fair while, but then I kept listening to it and kept coming back to it because of a roughly 50 second section which ties the track and the whole album together. Yeah, this is on here purely for the bridge, which is just beautiful.
Dodie - Monster Monster is an incredibly well written and delivered study on how perception changes with resentment and it makes me cry.
The Y Axes - Moon Moon is a delightfully dreamy piece of pop that glitters with infectious melodies, it’s lyrics a blissful embracing of cosmic nihilism, need I say more?
Ezra Furman - My Teeth Hurt My teeth hurt is a song about tooth ache, about that pain you carry with you everywhere and can’t get rid of, that ruins your days and and is one hell of a mood. Yeah it’s about gender dysphoria.
Nervus - No Nations Speaking of things being a mood, this track hits the nail squarely on the head.
Cultdreams - Not My Generation "Everyone ignores me Unless I’m on a stage talking Because they put me on a pedestal And pretend I’m just performing“ Lucinda Livingstone calls out the misogyny in our culture with a singular ferocity.
Lil Nas X - Old Town Road If there’s one song that’s dominated 2019 this is it right here. Who ever had the idea of putting that NIN Ghosts sample to a trap beat and cowboying over the top of it is an absolute genius.
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Planet B It’s impossible to predict where King Gizzard’s sonic influences are going to take them next I doubt even they know half the time. Whatever they turn their hand to though they do it as if they mastered the sound decades ago Planet B is an all out thrash track with a strong environmental message.
Kesha - Rich, White, Straight Men Okay, I’m about to compare Kesha to John Lennon here but HEAR ME OUT… As ‘Imagine’ asked us to consider a world without conflict or capitalism, Kesha now posits that we should tear up our conceptions of our society based on its formation by a privileged group and imagine what kind of utopia could be built if we gave the underprivileged and minority groups a say.
Allie X - Rings A Bell The chorus here sounds like it could have been off Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories, and I’m all about that sound. Combined with Allie X’s dreamlike vocals make this a certified bop.
Poly-Math - Sensors in Everything Sensors in Everything is a beast of a track spanning over 14 minutes of absurdly dense prog. Having recently enlisted keyboardist Josh Gesner. Polymath make use of the new sounds and textures available to them, at times imitating a sort of Hammond sound not unlike John Lord to the chaotic maelstrom of noise.
Calva Louise - Sleeper Big hooks on this one. Sleeper has a confident swagger to it’s sound which stands apart for the bands previous work. It’s an absolutely huge track.
Slipknot - Solway Firth Slipknot didn’t disappoint after the tease of 2018′s “All Out Life”, following up with an album which blended old and new aspects of their sound to create one of their best to date. Solway Firth is a perfect example of this matching the punishing heaviness of Iowa with the melody driven sound of All Hope Is Gone.
Clt Drp - Speak To My Seeing Clt Drp perform live was one of my highlights of the year. The filthy guitar tones, powerhouse vocals tight as heck drumming and the _grooves. _Absolutely like nothing else I’ve seen. Just an incredible band that deserve so much more recognition.
Black Country, New Road - Sunglasses Black Country, New Road released two tracks this year and now I just want more. Dense wordy lyricism plays off against ever evolving instrumentation to present a raw cut of emotional storytelling.
Her Name Is Calla - Swan Her Name Is Calla are a band that have always been on the edge of my radar, my Dad is very fond of them and saw them live a couple of years ago, but never went back to relisten to any of their stuff, then they started an album with this. I was sold instantly.
black midi - Talking Heads Talking Heads (the band) are an obvious inspiration on this track. Both David Byrne’s vocal style and the Talking Heads penchant for sharp angular melodies are on show here. But given an extra ounce of chaos through Black Midi’s delivery.
Amanda Palmer - The Ride The ride is ten minutes of bundling up all your fears and anxieties of where we are and where we’re going and just, accepting them as part of the ride. Written off the back of a prompt from Amanda asking her fans what they were afraid of right now.
Kim Petras - There Will Be Blood Okay, let’s have some out of season spookiness. Love the squelchy synths on this, there’s a huge amount of energy on this track and with it’s commitment to the horror conceit it makes for a super fun bop.
Kate Nash - Trash Kate Nash’s sound is like bathing pure nostalgia, here she spins the toxic-relationship narrative central to her work to deliver a bigger story about humanity’s, quite literally toxic relationship to our planet.
American Football & Hayley Williams - Uncomfortably Numb The other side of the “midwest emo” coin. A melancholic song built on a soft bed of arpeggiated chords and clean harmonics, Uncomfortably Numb is a heartbreaking track of losing everything and of cycles persisting thorugh generations. Employing the clever metatextual trick of referencing Pink Floyd’s comfortably Numb to mirror the generational similarities.
Glenn Branca - Velvet and Pearls Disclaimer, Glenn Branca was a musical hero of mine, his approach to music and composition being solely responsible for influence a vast number of my favourite bands. Released posthumously, Velvet and Pearls is taken from a live performance by Branca’s ensemble and perfectly captures the sense of sonic disorientation, conjuring aural illusions through an assault of intricately crafted noise. It’s an exhilarating piece that should be played as loud as humanly possible.
Brutus - War The raw emotional strength of Stefanie Manneart’s vocals instantly made me pay attention when I first heard this track. Then the song exploded into a barrage of riffs and breakneck drumming.
Valiant Vermin - Warm Coke Another slice of throwback pop, Valiant Vermin proved with “Online Lover” how much of an ear she has for pop and has proven it once again with Warm Coke. Is a real good bop.
———
Welp there it is, 50(+1) songs, I had to limit myself to one track per artist in the main 50 because according to Spotify I listened to [checks notes] 1082 new artists this year. There are a small handful of tracks I wanted to highlight from the same artists though as they offer something quite different to the tracks in the playlists, so here they are quickly with 3 word descriptions.
Petrol Girls - Skye (dead dog, sad) Amanda Palmer - Voicemail for Jill (Talk about abortion) Ezra Furman - I Wanna be Your Girlfriend (Trans Torch Song) Battles ft Jon Anderson & Prairie WWWW - Sugar Foot (Batshit Prog Insanity) Poppy - Choke (Dark Minimalist Pop) Show Me The Body - Forks and Knives (Anxious nightmare punk) Lingua Ignota - CALIGULA (the whole album.)

Closing Statement
Cultdreams - Statement
There has been a shadow over the entertainment industry the latter half of this decade. Whether film, music, TV or video games, the late 2010′s are filled with stories of people coming forward to bravely tell their stories about being abused and manipulated by men in positions of power. The #metoo movement as it’s come to be known has been a powerful force in giving marginalised people a voice and the ability to call out oppressors and in starting the groundwork to root out the misogyny in the seats of power, but this is a battle far from won.
While there are thousands of stories out there I want to focus on one in particular.
In 2016 a number of women spoke out about various forms of abuse by a well-known musician in the punk scene. It’s now over three years later and this group of women are in the midst of a long fought claim of defamation from this musician. If this case goes through it sets a precedent for silencing marginalised voices in the industry. They have been fighting for so long and with no legal aid available for the case they have had to finance their defense from their own pockets.
This is where Solidarity Not Silence comes in. Solidarity not silence is a crowdfunding effort to help take the case to trial without the women bankrupting themselves entirely so that they don’t have to give in to this mans demands. For the week of 5 May 2019
Quick Bits:
Age of Conan: Bêlit #3 throws a few road bumps in the way of Bêlit’s plans as the Kushites renege of their deal and her drunken “Captain” continues being a jerk. I’m really liking this exploration of Bêlit’s early days from Tini Howard, Kate Niemczyk, Scott Hanna, Jason Keith, and Travis Lanham.
| Published by Marvel
Archie #704 throws some roadblocks in the way of Archie and Sabrina’s relationship through the form of a “Bachelor”-like charity programme set up by Cheryl. I love the even more stylized pastel colour palette from Matt Herms.
| Published by Archie Comics
Batman & The Outsiders #1 is an entertaining debut from Bryan Hill, Dexter Soy, Veronica Gandini, Clayton Cowles. I’ve not read the arc in Detective Comics that feeds into this, but this first issue provides enough information for new readers now to be lost and gives good incentive to check out what’s come before. Great art from Soy and Gandini, with an interesting look inside a team and a compelling start to a mystery about the last survivor from a metahuman generating factory.
| Published by DC Comics
Bettie Page #4 concludes the QE2 aliens caper. Love the art from Julius Ohta, Ellie Wright, and Sheelagh D.
| Published by Dynamite
Bronze Age Boogie #2 continues the strangest Doom Patrol story as the Martian invasion angle has taken hold in the future and a motley crew of heroes bands together to try to stop them. Stuart Moore, Alberto Ponticelli, Giulia Brusco, and Rob Steen are playing with some interesting cross-media influences to tell a highly entertaining tale. It’s rounded out with the usual goodies in the form of prose, letters, and what’s probably my favourite of the back-up strips so far, Major Ursa, from Tyrone Finch, Mauricet, Lee Loughridge, and Rob Steen.
| Published by Ahoy
Conan the Barbarian #6 sees Jason Aaron, Mahmud Asrar, Matthew Wilson, and Travis Lanham tell a story of Conan’s frustrations as a mercenary in the skirmishes between Turan and Stygia. People constantly underestimating Conan is always a fun story.
| Published by Marvel
Deadly Class #38 sees Marcus and Maria return to King’s Dominion. It’s kind of messed up seeing the new status quo, but at the same time the tension that Rick Remender, Wes Craig, Jordan Boyd, and Rus Wooton build here between to old Legacy kids and Marcus & Maria feels like it’s going to explode, suggesting something even worse for the characters is coming soon. It’s very captivating.
| Published by Image / Giant Generator
Detective Comics #1003 reveals the identity of the Arkham Knight. It’s not really anyone you could have possibly guessed, but an interesting addition to Batman’s rogues gallery. Also the cult surrounding the Arkham Knight is certifiably insane. Gorgeous artwork again from Brad Walker, Andrew Hennessy, and Nathan Fairbairn.
| Published by Marvel
The Empty Man #7 goes full Clive Barker as we get an explanation for what the Empty Man really is and how he continues to manifest himself upon reality. I know I keep saying it, but the body horror brought about in the art from Jesús Hervás and Niko Guardia just can’t be stressed enough. Every issue they seem to outdo themselves with creepy and intriguing designs.
| Published by BOOM! Studios
Eve Stranger #1 looks to be another winner for Black Crown. This first issue sets up the titular character as a secret agent who seems to need to reboot her memory every week. Why, exactly, is left unknown, but that’s part of the fun. David Barnett, Philip Bond, Eva de la Cruz, and Jane Heir do a wonderful job here with the action and intrigue. Also it’s great to see Bond doing more espionage tinged action, his art always looks so great telling these kinds of stories.
| Published by IDW / Black Crown
Excellence #1 is a thoroughly excellent debut from Brandon Thomas, Khary Randolph, Emilio Lopez, and Deron Bennett. The world and character building in this first issue is impeccable and the art from Randolph and Lopez will just blow you away. Incredible development of a magic-based society and the class structure therein.
| Published by Image / Skybound
The Flash #70 begins “Year One” promising new insight and occurrences during Barry’s origin story. Given that the last time this happened his mother was murdered, changing the timeline and resulting down the line in Barry trying to fix it with Flashpoint, anything’s possible. The real draw, though, is the stunning artwork from Howard Porter and Hi-Fi. Porter is really giving this his all and it shines through wonderfully.
| Published by DC Comics
Hawkman #12 brings Bryan Hitch’s tenure on the series to an end with the conclusion to “Cataclysm”. This is an excellent, action-packed final confrontation between the legion of Hawkmen and the Deathbringers, setting up a whole Hawkman for possibly the first time and hints as to worse things waiting on the horizon.
| Published by DC Comics
Infinite Dark #6 amplifies the terror and chaos as the dead-ish things exposed to the void start spreading fear and panic throughout the station. Ryan Cady, Andrea Mutti, K. Michael Russell, and Troy Peteri ratchet up the horror here.
| Published by Image / Top Cow
Invaders #5 raises more questions after we thought some things were coming into focus in the previous issue, as Chip Zdarsky, Carlos Magno, Butch Guice, Alex Guimarães, and Travis Lanham continue “War Ghosts”. The tension here on the brink of all out war between the US and Atlantis is incredible, and there are more interesting twists that suggest something far more sinister occurring.
| Published by Marvel
Jim Henson’s The Storyteller: Sirens #2 features a gorgeous adaptation of the story of Chinese mother goddess, Nuwa, by Chan Chau with letters by Jim Campbell. The artwork is amazingly beautiful supporting a very sweet tale.
| Published by Boom Entertainment / Archaia
Justice League Odyssey #9 opens up an interesting thread that Starfire, Cyborg, and Azrael may be unduly under the influence of Darkseid. Dan Abnett is setting up some simmering conflict between Jessica Cruz and the rest of the team here, along with quite a few occult catchphrases thrown in to help amplify the mood.
| Published by DC Comics
Lodger #5 is the end to this excellent crime drama from the Laphams and it is all kinds of messed up. We learn what really happened to Ricky’s family and...yeah. This has been a strange, at times disturbing, ride and they stuck the landing.
| Published by IDW / Black Crown
Murder Falcon #8 is the epic conclusion to this series as Jake and Murf take on Magnum Khaos. Between this series and Extremity, Daniel Warren Johnson has proven himself time and again as a master storyteller and it shines through with the heartrending end to this story. This one goes up to eleven.
| Published by Image / Skybound
Red Sonja & Vampirella Meet Betty & Veronica #1 is an interesting mash-up of the three properties from Amy Chu, Maria Sanapo, Vinicius Andrade, and Taylor Esposito. Some nice fish out of water humour as Sonja and Vampirella acclimate to Riverdale.
| Published by Dynamite
Savage Sword of Conan #5 concludes “The Cult of Koga Thun” from Gerry Duggan, Ron Garney, Richard Isanove, and Travis Lanham. Some interesting twists in this finale of what has been a highly entertaining adventure.
| Published by Marvel
She Could Fly: The Lost Pilot #2 sees Martín Morazzo cut loose again with some of the designs and presentation for Luna’s dreams and schizophrenic episodes.
| Published by Dark Horse / Berger Books
Star Wars: Age of Rebellion - Boba Fett #1 features some incredibly rich artwork from Marc Laming and Neeraj Menon. Great detail throughout this story spotlighting Boba Fett’s cold, silent amorality.
| Published by Marvel
Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #32 begins “Unspeakable Rebel Superweapon” as Aphra and her young protege steal the titular MacGuffin. There’s some interesting flashbacks to Aphra’s youth and it’s great to see Caspar Wijngaard doing more Star Wars art, even if just the flashbacks.
| Published by Marvel
These Savage Shores #4 is a sumptuous feast. Ram V, Sumit Kumar, Vittorio Astone, and Aditya Bidikar are elevating the artform of comics which each subsequent issue. The epistolary narrative, the horror and mythological themes, the plays upon the nine-panel grid, the shadowy character designs, the lush and spooky colours, the overlap with historical events, the unique approach and detail in each character’s missive...just one of these elements would result in an entertaining tale, this comic mixes all of them into a superlative package. You’re doing yourself a disservice if you’re not reading this series.
| Published by Vault
The Unstoppable Wasp #7 throws Nadia a birthday party, wherein she learns of her relations to what seems like half of the Marvel universe. Also, issues a death threat to Tony Stark. It’s cute, from Jeremy Whitley, Alti Firmansyah, Espen Grundetjern, and Joe Caramagna.
| Published by Marvel
War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas #1 sets up the conflict in the Pacific with Sindr while introducing a swath of new international characters to the Marvel universe. Also, Amadeus Cho continues to be a massive idiot, even at his shrunken size. Great art from Gang Hyuk Lim and Federico Blee.
| Published by Marvel
Wonder Twins #4 sets up the twins with a pair of dates, allowing for some hilarious misadventures. Also, Polly seems to have a weird obsession with testicular cancer. Mark Russell, Stephen Byrne, and Dave Sharpe continue the fun, even though this one kind of takes us away from all ages material.
| Published by DC Comics / Wonder Comics
Wyrd #3 opens up the messy can of worms of Wyrd’s past further as a figure out of the past he can’t remember emerges for a “meet”. Great tone and atmosphere for this story from Curt Pires, Antonio Fuso, Stefano Simeone, and Micah Myers.
| Published by Dark Horse
X-Force #7 begins “The Counterfeit King” from Ed Brisson, Dylan Burnett, Damian Couceiro, Jesus Aburtov, and Joe Caramagna as past and present threaten to collide. Some nice character development for the team as they wait for Deathlok to do his thing.
| Published by Marvel

more essay updates, not much new content but filling out the structure a little bit. i can’t believe it’s only 1500 words right now. it feels simultaneously way too long and way too short
Few franchises can match the breadth of Star Wars, and fewer still can claim to be as iconic. Not only have the characters, dialogues, settings, and aesthetics been directly referenced and lovingly parodied across all genres, so too has John Williams’ music. Yet Williams’ music is perhaps most referenced, riffed on, and remixed within the franchise itself; it is difficult to find a piece of Star Wars media which does not contain any number of Williams’ leitmotifs, such as the bombastic “Main Title” fanfare, the sweeping majesty of the Force theme, or the foreboding, villainous “Imperial March.” Within the many, many Star Wars related properties, composers for the franchise’s “lower tier” [properties], i.e. any property outside of the nine-film “Skywalker Saga,” are presented with a difficult challenge: how does one emulate and reference Williams’ original, titanic score, keeping a coherent sonic aesthetic, without copying him directly, and allowing space for the composer’s own musical language?
The larger Star Wars chronology can be broken into three general eras: the Original Trilogy era (OT), which focuses on the time represented by the films A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and Rogue One, the Sequel Trilogy era (ST), which is comprised of the films The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker, as well as the TV series Star Wars: Resistance, and the Prequel Trilogy era (PT), as represented by the films The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, and Solo, as well as the TV series The Clone Wars. Of these properties, Williams has obviously scored the lion’s share of the films; Rogue One’s soundtrack was composed by Michael Giacchino, Resistance by Michael Tavera, Solo by John Powell, and The Clone Wars by Kevin Kiner.
Kiner’s other work for Star Wars was the score of another TV series, Star Wars Rebels. Rebels occupies an interesting place within the greater Star Wars chronology, qualifying as a prequel due to taking place before the events of A New Hope, yet both aesthetically and narratively more aligned with the OT, rather than the PT. [Though Rebels is nominally a prequel, Kiner’s musical language sets it firmly within the OT era, with frequent sonic callbacks to Williams’ score, with each aesthetic connection serving not only to link the viewer to the OT era, but highlight the narrative differences between Rebels and the original films. This is particularly exemplified in the parallels and contrasts between the heroes of Rebels and the OT, Ezra Bridger, and Luke Skywalker.] -fixxx
From the outset, several parallels can be drawn between Ezra Bridger and Luke Skywalker: both are orphans from provincial areas of the galaxy, both are accidentally caught up in insurrectionist rebel activity against the Empire, and both discover that they can wield the powers of the Force. They are even roughly the same age, born within days of each other. Contrasts do abound, however. Ezra receives several years of Jedi training from a former Jedi, while Luke receives very little; Ezra is actively involved with the Rebel Alliance from the very beginning, while Luke has to be drawn into it due to personal tragedy; Ezra’s primary motif is connected to the twin moons of his home planet of Lothal - this, in contrast to the famous scene of Luke Skywalker gazing into the twin sunset of his planet of Tatooine; and so on. [more parallels]
Set five years before the events of A New Hope, the backdrop of Rebels depicts the formal declaration of the Galactic Alliance, the establishment of the famous rebel base on the planet of Yavin IV, and numerous references to the secret construction of the Death Star, alongside several integral character cameos, including Lando Calrissian, Princess Leia, and Obi-wan Kenobi, while the main thrust of the story centers on the crew of the Ghost, an early cell of the as-yet-undeclared Rebel Alliance, and the journey of its newest crew member, Ezra Bridger. Described by Dave Filoni, [title] and creator of Rebels, as a con artist, and Taylor Gray, the character’s actor, as a [street smart thief], Ezra happens upon the crew of the Ghost as they commit a minor act of terrorism against the Galactic Empire, stealing several crates of supplies. Rather than pick a side in the conflict, Ezra elects to steal a crate of the same supplies for himself, outrunning the comedically incompetent Imperial police force, and dodging the members of the Ghost crew as they try to get the supplies back, until Ezra is forced to seek refuge on the Ghost to escape the marginally more competent TIE figher pilots. After helping the crew in distributing the supplies - namely, food - to a nearby refugee camp, Ezra is convinced by the Ghost’s pilot and leader, Hera Syndulla, to assist in a rescue mission. Despite his initial capture and subsequent escape from Imperial custody, Ezra chooses to see the rescue mission through to the end, and witnesses the Ghost’s second-in-command, Kanan Jarrus, wield a lightsaber, revealing himself as a survivor of the presumed-distinct and quasi-legendary Jedi Order. Recognizing that Ezra has the same gift, Kanan offers to train him to wield the Force in order to continue fighting against the Empire, dispelling any notion that the Jedi are gone with a triumphant declaration, “Not all of us.” Filoni states [need src] that Ezra decides to join the Ghost not only to learn how to use a lightsaber, but because he is in need of a family, having lost his own parents at the age of seven, when they were arrested for their underground, anti-establishment radio broadcasts. Initially, Ezra joins the Rebellion not because it is the right thing to do, but because it is convenient to him at the time; the Ghost functions as a roof over his head, its crew members as a new set of parents and siblings, and its missions as a source of food and income, along with the added bonus of learning how to use an incredibly powerful, specialized weapon, despite the target it paints on his back. Part of Ezra’s journey over the course of Rebels is re-learning how to think beyond himself, and sacrificing himself for the greater good of everyone, and not just the good of his family and friends, but, as one would expect, at the very beginning of this story, he is far more selfish than selfless. It is halfway into the first season before Ezra begins to grok the Jedi lessons Kanan has attempted to teach him, beyond lifting rocks with his mind, as he [tearfully] admits his fears while in the middle of a vision quest (presided over by the disembodied voice of Master Yoda). Over the course of the show, Ezra has frequent, deep brushes with the “Dark Side” of the Force, becoming more inclined to hurt, [something], or even kill in the name of pragmatism and getting victories for the Rebel Alliance.
Luke’s introduction to the Rebel Alliance is equally accidental, though arguably far more heroic. When his uncle and adoptive father Owen purchases a pair of droids for the farm, Luke discovers a secret message hidden within one of them: Princess Leia’s plea to a mysterious Obi-wan Kenobi for aid. Luke’s first instinct is to help her. [more]
These parallels are further underscored by their respective musical motifs. Consider Luke’s theme, the “Main Title” fanfare. [GL quote, SWO 2, 20 min in]. Comprised primarily of perfect intervals, the theme begins with an ascending major fifth, an opening salvo so famous that music students everywhere, yours truly included, use it to identify perfect fifths in other contexts. As Lucas notes, the principal instrumentation is in the brass section, immediately conferring an old-world heroic air to Luke. [SWO hero’s journey quote]. [insert sheet music here, recap] As a theme, it is punchy, energetic, deliberately and intrinsically tied up in the “Rebel Fanfare,” and generally underscores moments of onscreen heroism and valiant derring-do [explain] [example] [example] [example]
By contrast, while Ezra’s theme is also played by the horns, they are muted, thinner, ringing out more softly over shimmering, sustained strings. [insert sheet music here, recap] Ezra’s theme mostly serves to underscore the character’s moments of emotional reflection, rather than his superhuman action. [example] [example] [example]

McDuffie Award for Kids’ Comics—Shortlist Announced!
The nominees for the fifth annual Dwayne McDuffie Award for Kids’ Comics are here!
After reading scores of comics published in 2018, the judges have selected their top ten. In alphabetical order, they are: Be Prepared, by Vera Brosgol, sends young Vera, a Russian girl living in an American suburb, to summer camp—Russian summer camp, the only one her single mom can afford and the one where she just might be able to fit in,
The Cardboard Kingdom, by Chad Sell, follows a neighborhood of kids who transform ordinary cardboard into fantastical homemade costumes as they explore conflicts with friends, family, and their own identity.
Hidden Witch, by Molly Knox Ostertag, continues the story of Asler, hero of The Witch Boy, as he takes magic lessons from his grandmother and tries to help his non-magical friend Charlie escape from a curse that's trying to attach itself to her.
Last Pick, by Jason Walz, takes readers to an earth overrun by alien invaders, where only those too young, too old, or too "disabled" have been spared from abduction...but maybe the kids last picked can step up and start a revolution.
Lumberjanes: The Infernal Compass, by Lilah Sturges and polterink, finds the Janes separated during an orienteering outing, thanks to a mysterious compass that others very much want to lay their hands on.
My Beijing: Four Stories of Everyday Wonder, by Nie Jun, introduces Yu'er and her grandpa, who live in a small neighborhood in Beijing that's full of big personalities—with a story around every corner and a hint of magic each day.
Onibi: Diary of a Yokai Ghost Hunter, by Atelier Sento, transports readers to the places where natural and supernatural meet, as it explores some of the lesser-known parts of Japan in a story that is part fantasy and part travelogue.
Peter & Ernesto: A Tale of Two Sloths, by Graham Annable, tells the story of two best friends who are nothing alike—Peter loves their tree and never wants to leave, while Ernesto loves the sky and wants to see it from every place on earth.
The Prince and the Dressmaker, by Jen Wang, finds Prince Sebastian hiding a secret life―taking Paris by storm wearing fabulous dresses as the Lady Crystallia―and relying on the brilliant young dressmaker Frances, who guards his secret but has dreams of her own.
Sanity & Tallulah, by Molly Brooks, features best friends who live on a dilapidated space station at the end of the galaxy―but when Sanity creates a definitely-illegal-but-impossibly-cute three-headed kitten, the havoc it wreaks may mean the end of their outer space home.
Many, many thanks to judges Faith Roncoroni, Tameshja Brooks, and Nola Pfau, who were assisted by Kids Read Comics and A2CAF co-founder Edith Donnell!
The winner will be announced on Friday evening, June 14 at the Ann Arbor District Library
