Interview with Lisabelle Tay

She starts answering the typical question about her writing process and she says two really cool things:

I’ve been stewing on images lately, trying to find the language to make them real.

I suppose I write to make my life more legible to myself. Each poem is like building a lattice of words that clarifies the muck of experience into something that can be, if not understood, at least felt more clearly — writing feels to me like a desludging, an unfogging, sometimes an unclogging.

The interviewer, Karan, asks her about the short lines of Passiontide and I'm very proud to have thought about them too:

I���m intrigued by the short lines in “Passiontide” — usually short lines intensifies the pace but here it somehow, almost magically, seems to be slowing the lines down, making them sound wise and dark.

I really like her answer because I feel a little bit like that with my poetry, too, although I have not yet found a satisfactory way to be intentional with form:

I’m experimenting with being more intentional with form. Now, because I mostly make the poems in my head before vomiting them out onto the page, form usually emerges at the same time, surprising me a little — like, oh! I didn’t think you’d look like this, but of course you do.

Then something beautiful happens, because he says "In a way, loss makes for most of poetry’s heart — all poems are about loss of childhood, innocence, love, beauty, etc." and she answers "all poems, even happy ones, are about loss"

Finally, her poem prompt is really cool and I wanna try it out sometime:

Mehri Intro

CW: kidnapping mention

Mehri is about 5’6, with gorgeous pitch-dark eyes and deep, warm-toned skin. She keeps her hair in soft, long, thin dreads, and loves wearing them crinkled or wavy when they’re down. When she’s at work or working out, she often pulls them into a low bun or ponytail so they don’t fall in her face. They are also ombré from black at the roots to a tawny, lion-blonde at the ends.

Everything in Mehri’s closet is warm-toned, with the exception of some light-wash denim bell bottoms (and maybe some white shoes and a headband? White doesn’t count as warm or cool I think?). Other than that, the closest to cool-tones would be wine purples. She likes lace, velvet, flowy items, and even some frilly ones too. Despite being rather shy by nature, her wardrobe contains a good amount of statement pieces. Most of her jewelry is gold, with the occasional bronze or white-gold piece, and she loves anything sun-shaped.

Outside of work, Mehri loves doing yoga, meditating, practicing her divination, and napping while sunbathing like a true cat. She also loves taking care of her fancy goldfish, and sometimes you might catch her making little kissy noises and baby talking at them (but she gets embarrassed if you see that lol). She keeps notes about their origins and health, and likes to keep up with international goldfish news. Other than that, she also enjoys making some jewelry designs of her own, or brainstorming ideas with Varsha for her business.

Mehri can put on a confident face for work, but it takes a lot out of her and at the end of the day she needs time to recharge. She has gotten a little less shy as the years have gone by, but she still gets Tai to order food for her at restaurants and things like that. She’s even shyer when it comes to expressing her feelings to you, or really showing affection to anyone the first few times. Once she becomes more comfortable, Mehri is much more cuddly and talkative, even a little bit clingy 🥰

She daydreams about you a lot, and secretly writes poetry about you and the other werecats. But nobody is allowed to read it!!! She would melt and die of embarrassment on the spot.

Mehri isn’t one for violence and killing— not that she’d ever need to resort to getting her hands dirty. Not when the rest of the werecats are already out for blood at the sight of Mehri’s tears— “Who hurt you, baby? We’ll take care of them.” Kidnapping you may have been her idea, though~

When it comes to playing DnD with the werecats, Mehri tends to pick whatever class will round out the group best, not having a particular favorite. That said, all of her characters inevitably end up with extremely elaborate backstories, and she even makes sketches for everybody’s characters and favorite NPCs 🥺💕

My real name is actually a name my parents got from a journalist/tv presenter so yeah I'm named after her! My internet name Anni is just short for my url, but it is also the name of one of my grandma's so that's kinda fun :)

this question has been in the back of my mind ever since you asked me, so you were truly living in my mind rent free, anon.

so, Love Interests that love hard / give their all:

Season 1:

Tim. We see him changing to fit in his relationship with Jen and, although it's not healthy at all, it's the biggest proof I have that when he's in he is all in. I truly think that if your MC went home with him on Christmas, that's it for him and he never let you go.

Jake. Our little sweetheart. When he's in a relationship I think he is in for the long haul. That's why it takes him longer to make this kind of commitment with MC. And after they get together, there's no turning back.

Season 2:

Bobby. I know, I always add him on these, but c'mon. He is exactly what "loves hard" mean. Wear his heart on his sleeves, gives his all, no turning back and he'll try to make this work for real. The personification of "The Louvre" by Lorde.

Felix. Yeah, he does. He's a little clueless and can come across as annoying sometimes but he will love you with his all. Devotion is the word we are looking for here. He adores you and can't be apart. People can be step all over him 'cause of that. But he's pure hearted and that is what matter in the end.

Henrik. Love you and gives you his all, 100% in from the get go. He wants to make it work and is willing to really try. He gives me the ✨ let's sit and talk this through so we can do better ✨ vibes and we love that for him.

Season 3:

Tai. He just has so much love to give! It's shocking to you how he was available but you're thankful for it. He is so kind, so pure, so free spirited. He's not afraid of loving you and showing this love to the world, he just gives you his all.

Rafi. I mean, he leaves the show if you don't want him. That's dedication, pure and simple! The man has guts and loves unashamedly, we have to admit.

Nicky. Fusebox made him a best friend because they knew that if he was a LI, they would never be able to make a better one. He is just all in, no turning back, there for you.

AJ. Believes in soulmates and is sure that you're hers. She was a player once but she has no problem with letting it go as soon as she's with you. She loves you and wants to make it work.

Season 4:

James. Loves you without limits, no shame. He can sing you praises, write you poetry, paint you like a muse. He will scream his love on every corner on earth and that's just everything.

Bruno. He is the kind of person that would bend backwards if you ask him to. He just loves and loves and loves — and he loves to love. No turning back for him.

Personality- Pasithea is very level headed. She's cool, calm, and collected. She considers herself to be in tune with the universe and cosmic energy. She's the founder of the MGM, vocalizing that minor gods should have more involvement with the Olympian government & more recognition. She’s in a relationship.

As the goddess of hallucinations & relaxation she can induce the feeling of relaxation in others and also has the power of invisibility and can turn other people & objects invisible. She can also induce hallucinations (sensory) in others. She can also alter people's state of consciousness- including rendering them unconscious.

She lives in a quaint cottage estate in the Hearthwood neighborhood. The primary color scheme is pastel lavender, periwinkle, silver, light blue, and gray. Pasithea will sometimes stay over at her boyfriend's place in the Underworld.

Pasithea owns many businesses in Olympius including a chain of spas (OuterOasis), vegan restaurants (Garden Gatherings), tea rooms, and popular yoga studios (Zenesphere). She also has a line of massage oils, aromatherapy candles, & incense sticks. For other work/means of income, Pasithea writes for Vital Essence magazine and she also models for/endorses Persuasions, Threads of Wisdom, & Paloma.

She also enjoys cloud surfing, deep sea diving, tai chi, acupuncture, and karaoke. She's even taken up doing henna tattoos. She even has a channel on PanopTube with nearly 10 million subscribers. Most of her videos are her specialty- ASMR.

She has a close bond with her mother Nárkosi (goddess of sedation). Pasithea hasn't seen her since she left to join Pan's community, but they still keep in touch through writing letters.

She's vegan. Her go-to meal is fried brown rice, vegetable spring rolls, smoky tofu dumplings with sweet chili dipping sauce, and a large strawberry iced tea.

Pasithea loves using the white tea & lilac line of products from Glory's Crown for her long raven hair.

What I love about them: Taichi's whole vibe is what I aim to have for myself. He'e so cool but at the same time he seems like a person that makes you comfortable just by being near you. He's amazing and I want to be the same

What I hate about them: nothing. There's nothing to hate about Taichi Nanao.

Favorite Moment/Quote: I really enjoy Sakuya and Taichi's event chats, they somehow click so well during those, and they're some of my fave interactions of Taichi with members outside of his troupe

What I would like to see more focus on: Taichi's skating. He is a skater but there's barely any focus on that in canon, so I'd love to see more of itttttttt

What I would like to see less focus on: His association with dogs. Taichi is more than a dog boy and half of the puppy pair k thanks.

Favorite pairing with: SAKUTAITEN, no doubt about it. I just love the dynamic between these three, it's impossible for me to find sth else.

Favorite friendship: the Banri and Taichi duo is underestimated. They have so much chaotic potential. Also I want Taichi and Tasuku as a duo to be more explored

Favorite headcanon: Taichi is the resident go-to guy when you want to dye your hair, especially in the middle of the night. It's because he often dyes his hair late at night since he often forgets to do it until right before going to bed. Lmao I love him sm.

What I love about them: How he is himself so unapologetically. No matter what you say about his "weird" personality or his poetry, he still goes on like nothing happens.

What I hate about them: lmao I feel like anyone who looks forward to what I have to say about anyone for this one will be so disappointed. I have nothing

Favorite Moment/Quote: act 1 episode 4 is a perfect example of how Homare did the most work for the Winter Troupe in the very beginnings. Everyone came around and started contributing just as much, don't get me wrong, but all I'm saying is that at the beginning Homare wanted then to get closer and did his best, even when he didn't succed the first time.

What I would like to see more focus on: idk if this fits here but m a n I need another Homare lead it's been bong enough leebur pls

Some of these are fairly textual, but with the exception of occasional flirtation/references in characters’ inner monologues, almost all actual romance occurs completely off-screen.

I did not intend for there to be Song Lan/Su She/Xiao Xingchen (songsuxiao), but I’m told some people saw it in there, so. Have at.

Here are some notes about names of people, for those who don’t get names in canon. I was ably assisted by merakily and invitan in choosing these and am told they’re not wildly inappropriate! There are some spoilers in the details given.

Starting off with the nicknames for the babies, so if you’re not sure if you want to spoil yourself further you have two paragraphs to back out or continue.  

Xiaodou (小豆, Adzuki) or Xiaodou Yeye (小豆爷爷, Grandpa Adzuki) is a nickname given to baby Mo Xuanyu. Adzuki are a type of bean, also called red mung beans, and they’re commonly boiled with sugar to make an extremely delicious paste called anko. In Chinese cuisine it’s commonly used as filling for pastry dishes like mooncakes and tangyuan. The story of how he got that nickname is in chapter 12; in short, he was red and wrinkly, as many babies are, and the nickname stuck. The more common term for adzuki seems to be hongdou (红豆) but xiaodou, chidou (赤豆), chixiaodou, hongxiaodou, etc. are used fairly interchangably as far as I can tell, and I think the version that approximates to “little bean” is the cutest version to refer to a baby with.

Luobo Zhongzi is a nickname given to baby Wen Yuan. I used the characters for the words translated as “radish seeds” in chapter 74. In that chapter, Wen Qing scolds Wei Wuxian because she told him to go buy radish seeds and instead he fought Jiang Cheng. In my head, this is how that nickname came to be:

“Wei Ying,” Meng Yao says, with the fragile calm of someone an inch away from completely losing his shit, “I thought I told you to buy radish seeds.”

“Are you blind, Meng-shidi? Look at this handsome radish seed I have right here!” Wei Ying bounces the baby on his hip. “We’ll plant him and he’ll sprout right up, you’ll see.”

Meanwhile, Xue Yang sidles up to Wen Zhuliu and gives him his biggest, toothiest smile. “Gege, teach me how to punch someone in the soul?”

Some birth and courtesy names:

Fu Xiang (富 祥); the fu here is still a relatively common character used as a Chinese surname today, and can also mean “wealthy” or “abundant” - a good name for a mercantile sect, especially one that wants to curry favour with Lanling Jin. The xiang means “auspicious” - also a fairly common name, in this case given by parents who hoped their daughter would tie them to one of the larger sects one day.

Mo Xing (莫惺). The character 惺 is commonly understood as “tranquil”, although it has an older literary meaning of “wise” or “intelligent”, as Mo Lang tells Mo Yu. However, Mo Yu is not particularly literate at the time she chooses it, and doesn’t realise that Mo Lang is rather unkindly choosing a name that’s homophonous with 猩, which means “ape”, and 腥, which means “fishy smell”.

Mo Lang (莫 角); in modern usage, lang means “jade-like stone”, “clean and white”, or “the tinkling of pendants” but it also has an archaic meaning as “white jade” i.e. the most valuable jade.

Mo Yu (莫玉); yu also means “jade”, but in this case, just regular jade, not fancy white jade.

Mo Lihua (莫 莉花). Li, “jasmine”, and hua, “flower”. The character used for her surname is the same as all other members of the Mo family, meaning “no one” or “do not”, but sometimes Mo Lihua likes to troll people by writing her name as 茉莉花, which is the full name for a jasmine flower (the literal translation would be “jasmine jasmine flower”.) Mo Lihua is a reference to the popular folk song Mo Li Hua, which definitely post-dates the CQL timeframe, but I already disclaimed my ahistoricity so we are all just going to deal with that. It’s very popular - Celine Dion and Song Zuying performed it at the Beijing Olympics - and I thought it was particularly appropriate because of a translation singeli showed me:

Meng Jingqiu (孟经秋); the jing comes from the Shijing, the Book of Songs, which really does use the same character as Meng Shi’s birth name (诗). The qiu comes from the Chunqiu, the Spring and Autumn Annals. These are two of the Five Classics of Confucianism.

Meng Fuqiu (孟府秋); the fu comes from yuefu (乐府), which is a genre of classical poetry intended to mimic folk songs (class issues, anyone...?), and also means governance - something Meng Yao excels at. The qiu, again, comes from Chunqiu and links his courtesy name with Meng Jingqiu. I thought it was nicer than linking him to Jin Guangshitbag.

Wen Guijiao (温 圭角); this is a little complex. A gui was a long jade tablet or scepter, often shaped like a sword (here’s a plain one) (here’s one with poetry on it) (and one with animal masks) (and a very fancy one with dragons) held by imperial rulers for certain ceremonies. The pointed tip is called the guijiao (literally “corner of the jade tablet” but more usefully “tip of the scepter”, I believe). So literally the guijiao is the most delicate piece of an incredibly delicate and ornate piece of jade, but figuratively it means “talents displayed”, as in the chengyu bulu-guijiao (不露圭角) which is literally “do not reveal the tip of the scepter” and means to remain inconspicuous by hiding your talents. And I thought that was nice, for Our Lady of Hidden Badassery.

Wen Xu = as per canon, my best guess is approximately “warmth of the rising sun”

2020 ~everything~ wrap

2020 HIGHLIGHTS ✨

rules: list your top 10 shows (bl or not) you watched in 2020 (doesn’t necessarily have to be shows that came out in 2020 though!)

1. 2GETHER & STILL2GETHER

my first thai drama, and even after all the amazing shows i’ve watched this year, it still has a special place in my heart. watching 2gether was the first time i’d ever seen a queer romcom that just... was. for me, by the simple fact of its being, 2gether was revolutionary. and then still2gether came along and took all the best things about the first season and gave us something beautiful and quiet and lovely and just proved to me, once and for all, that queer happiness doesn’t need to justify its own existence. there can be gay cuddles on the beach for no other reason than that we want them. 

2. UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN

i don’t really have the words for this one but. it makes my heart so very soft.

3. FRIEND ZONE 2: DANGEROUS AREA

season one was mindless fun because everyone was an absolute trashfire and it was hella cathartic to watch, but season 2... wow. i love it for so many reasons: it has messy and authentic queer rep; the characterisation is excellent and i somehow care about all of the characters; amazing women taking centre stage(!); a wlw relationship with lesbian, ace and bipolar rep; multiple interesting plotlines; actual character development; arm weerayut as a chaos gremlin... absolutely one of my favourites of 2020.

4. CHERRY MAGIC

i don’t think i need to explain this one, which is fortunate, because i have no idea how exactly i’d describe the happy-warm-fuzzy-queer-seen-loving-affirmed-profound feeling that rises in my chest whenever i think about it. 

5. THE GIFTED: GRADUATION

confession: i liked season 2 more than season 1 (with the exception of the ending, which we don’t talk about). season 1 was enjoyable and interesting, but for me it was season 2 which made me love this series. it did some incredibly interesting and complicated things (even if it didn’t quite nail the landing): it pushed characters to the breaking point and wove so many layers into the story and questioned its own underlying themes. plus, watching it alongside everyone in the fandom made it 200% better. i love all of you and i love this show. egg girl 5eva.

6. THE SHIPPER

i 100% understand why so many people didn’t like this show, or found it problematic, but through some fluke it absolutely worked for me (even the ending). one day i will write an essay explaining my rationale, but for now i’ll just say that it’s one of my favourite shows about adolescence and queerness and identity and compassion and friendship and love that i’ve ever watched. 

7. YYY

this series is absolutely off its rocker, and it somehow managed to be one of the most affirming shows i’ve watched. it shouldn’t have worked by it did, and i love it so much.

8. 3 WILL BE FREE

absolutely iconic. amazing plot, stunning visuals, great characters, canon polyamory, jennie being incredible... what a series.

9. MANNER OF DEATH

i love the fact that this show exists; i love the mix of crime and romance; i love maxtul’s acting; i love the central relationship; i love bun. i know we’re not even halfway through yet, but this show is doing something special and i’m so grateful that i get to watch it unfold in real time. 

10. CHIHAYAFURU (SEASON 3)

odd one out on my list, but I had to include it. chihayafuru is my all-time favourite anime and it finally got a third season, which is somehow even better than the first two. mashima taichi is one of my favourite characters of all time and his storyline hits me on such a profound level. plus, in the years since i first say this show i’ve fallen in love with classical japanese literature (particularly heian poetry) so i had newfound appreciation for the karuta matches (aka i cried every time someone recited one of my favourite poems)

other favourites: together with me, he’s coming to me, sotus and sotus s, my dear loser: edge of 17, why r u, theory of love, wake up chanee!, gameboys, pearl next door, uta koi (anime), three kingdoms (2010), blood and water (netflix). (itsay would almost certainly be on my list if i’d had time to watch it. same with dark blue kiss, which i had to pause so i could do my assignments)

Final Thoughts

well, it’s been... a year (i don’t think anyone needs a reminder of the details) but writing this post has reminded me of all the amazing shows and people I discovered over the course of it.

How do you choose your titles: Sometimes I pick from poetry or song lyrics if it matches the theme (I did this with I See Both Sides (like Chanel)), but sometimes a relevant title just comes to me.

Do you outline: Yes! I outline rather extensively, actually. Before I start writing, I create a google doc with all the major plot points. I add in comments if I have any specific dialogue/details/tone in mind for that part of the fic. I also tend to add in extra notes regarding timelines, world-building (i.e., magical theory), character profiles, and fics I want to reference to write certain scenes. It ends up looking something like this:

While writing the fic, I tend to enlist my notes app to outline specific chapters. Here I incorporate the major plot points in (but in more detail) and give myself specific word counts to meet. If I don't give myself word count goals I will literally never meet my overall goal and write too short of a fic haha. It looks like this:

In progress: The snippets of outline are from a Mystery/Case fic I've been avoiding working on for over a year. I'm hoping to get back to it in 2021, unless another fest diverts my attention lol.

what type of witch (or wizard, sorcerer, wixen…etc) do you identify as? Look, I’m an initiated Druid, an initiated Magus, an astrologer, a geomancer, a high-level Toastmaster (you only think it’s a muggle thing)  and a poet who has initiated other poets (a rare thing in this world). 

favorite magickal tool? In the beginning was the Word.

where is your favorite place to practice spellcasting/manifestation? In the temple when it’s Magus-magic, in the grove when it’s Druid-magic, in the circle when it’s other kinds of magic, in the club when it’s Toastmasters magic, and anywhere they’ll let me recite or read poetry.

first spell/manifestation you ever cast? A spell to prevent the ending of the world.  So far it’s worked.

first spell/manifestation that actually worked for you? A spell of general protection and defense against ill-will. Also it’s still working.  

most elaborate spell/manifestation you ever cast? The Decans Walk I’m currently engaged in, as a series of lessons on magic for my Patreon supporters. This precedes two prior walks, which resulted in my regular astrology column and a book of hymns for the astrological decans and other astrological phenomena, A Full Volume of Splendour and Starlight.

most powerful spell/manifestation you can cast? 1) I can cause you to write a sonnet in twelve minutes or less.  [You can, you know.  It won’t be a good sonnet, but it will be better than all the ones you haven't written yet.] 2) Give me two hours and your birth time/place/day, and I can help you understand yourself in a whole new way.  3) 

most often used spell/manifestation (favorite or daily use) I say the Orphic hymn to the spirit of each planet, each day; and I use a form of the Lesser Ritual of the Pentagram daily, as well. I do other stuff from time to time, but that’s the core of my practice.   I miss tai chi sometimes. It was the core of my daily routine for five years to the day, and I recommend that kind of rigor to others from time to time if they appear to need it.

a spell/manifestation/ritual that someone taught you that you still use to this day? How to become a walking, talking, living, breathing coincidence or synchronicity.  I used to worry about the fact that I didn’t generate too many synchronic events of my own as I became more advanced in magic. Now I understand that I create these moments for virtually everyone I interact with, constantly.
