We've said this before, and we will say it again, the best part of our job is meeting so many wonderful and interesting people who love and share a passion for adventure and the great outdoors and who also love to have a laugh. So what a great way to kick off our #sixfoottrack season with 16 adventure seekers who walked, talked and laughed, and at times dug deep to complete the historic Blue Mountains track over the two days from Jenolan Caves to Katoomba. It was evident from the start of the walk that not even a slight drizzle of rain would dampen the spirits and enthusiasm of this energetic and focused group. It was lovely to finally finish the walk up through the beautiful Nellies Glen to Explorers Tree after the repairs to the large landslide in the section. Hats off to Crown Lands for their hard work repairing that section. Some might disagree when making the climb, but it's a scenic and rewarding way to finish the two-day walk. We are super proud of the whole team. Some started the walk with preexisting injuries, so getting in and having a go was a fantastic effort. But, in the end, having a go is worth 10x more than never having a go at all. The PPA team thoroughly enjoyed sharing the adventure, the interesting conversations and the laughs along the way. We are disappointed we missed the spider incident, but that's another tale. #bowtellsswingbridge was closed last week due to safety concerns, but we #improviseadaptandovercome the Coxs River with the incredible engineering from our good friends at Six Foot Track Eco Lodge Pav & Lucie. Thanks to our friends at Blue Mountains Maxi taxis who always get our teams to the start of the walk on time every time. Again job well-done team #bte😉 it was a fabulous weekend of adventure and fun and we hope to see you again. #adventureisawayoflife #peakpotentialadventures #katoomba #adventure #neverstopexploring #adventuretime #adventureawaits #nswtourism #bluemountainsaustralia #nswparks #visitnsw #adventurenthusiasts (at Six Foot Track, Blue Mtns) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqSWTwhS7pX/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Three Sisters – Missing Ladies of the Mountains
Over the 1990s to mid 2000s, it is alleged that a serial killer was at large in the Blue Mountains area, targeting young women. Maureen Mclachlan, Belinda Peisley and Kellie Ann Carmichael all disappeared within years of each other but were allegedly linked by one thing – “associates in the drug scene” (Ashworth, 2018). Two of these women are still missing and one was found, but with no connection to who her killer may be. Coverage of these cold cases were very evident in the media, however, we still do not know the circumstances that led to the tragic events of their disappearances and subsequent deaths.
Case #1
Maureen Mclachlan was a 23 year old from the Lithgow area who was reported missing by her father on April 3rd 1992. Prior to this, she “attended an RSL club on Lurline Street at Katoomba on 30 March, where she made three separate ATM withdrawals; the last being at 4:37pm. She then caught a taxi home to Leura before leaving again a short time later” (NSW Police, n.d.). She was then discovered “with a number of injuries to the head and body” (NSW Police, n.d.). Mclachlan’s parents have been on the hunt to find answers as to how this happened to their daughter, even offering a $200,000 reward to find her killer.
Tumblr media

Case #2
In the case of Belinda Peisley, a 19-year-old mother from the Blue Mountains, the mystery around her disappearance and alleged murder is believed to be known, and her family are waiting for persons of interest to reveal information. Toward the time before she disappeared, Belinda inherited a large sum of money and was getting involved with ‘the wrong type of people’ according to her family. The circumstances around her disappearance have been heavily explored in the ABC documentary, ‘Who Killed Belinda Peisley?. ABC (2018) states that “Belinda’s disappearance in 1998 wasn’t reported to the coroner’s office until 2006”. Within the inquest into Peisley’s disappearance, many persons of interest were identified, but the judge running the inquest held the belief that Heidi Wailes and her boyfriend at the time, Jeremy Douglass, were withholding information, which would incriminate them in regard to the case.

Case #3
Kellie Ann Carmichael was a 24-year-old Geelong woman who travelled up to the Katoomba area around the time of her disappearance. She “was last seen by staff at a hostel in Katoomba on the 29th April 2001” (NSW Police, n.d.). The NSW Police in exchange for information of her whereabouts, offered rewards totalling $200,000. As well as this, “despite numerous inquiries police have so far been unable to arrest any person they believe is responsible for this crime” (NSW Police, n.d.).
Tumblr media
Kellie is remembered as a beautiful and friendly person by family and high school friends. Source: Australian Missing Persons Register.
The Australian Missing Person’s register is growing at a large rate, and many cold cases are not making their way to the media, meaning a larger, public community can easily forget them. Also, more attention (coverage and funding) is given to other cases, as seen recently with 3-year-old Wiliam Tyrrell’s disappearance, in regard to recovery and investigation efforts. The idea of funding a cold case that has aged like the three mentioned above is usually not a priority, meaning efforts to find information and solve them have dwindled to a small possibility.

HILL END
I’m writing this post verbatim as I think it’s a good idea to spread the word about artists’ retreats. There are very few sole “writing” places in Australia with only Varuna, Katoomba NSW being the most prominent. We need more of these secluded retreats as they afford artists/writers the time, space, and the much-needed concentration on one’s work. I’ve been lucky enough to attend Varuna, however, I have constantly looked out for other Australian “affordable” retreats because this time away from life’s many distractions is essential and what any artist/writer needs. One needs time, and peace and quiet to sink down, re-acquaint yourself with your project, your characters, what is happening in your plot and (I often ask myself this) are there gaps/parts of scenes left out? A warning! It is out in the woop-woops, no public transport so it appears that you have to fly from Sydney to Bathurst, and then maybe get a taxi or a hire car. I’ll only worry about that if I am successful! INFO (from writingWA) – https://www.writingwa.org/opportunities/the-hill-end-artists-in-residence-program/ Visual artists, writers/curators, musicians, new media/film/video artists are all encouraged to apply for residencies at Hill End.
Successful applicants spend 4 weeks living and working in either Haefligers Cottage or Murrays Cottage at Hill End.
The Hill End Artists in Residence Program is based in Haefligers Cottage and Murrays Cottage at Hill End, a small former gold mining town in New South Wales, Australia. It is situated in an upland valley 84km north west of Bathurst and 35km west of Sofala. The village is not accessible via public transport and it is just over 4 hours drive from the Sydney CBD.

You must hold your horses and disciplined to overlook the current market frenzy and also purchase top quality dividend supplies when they are very most for sale, for so long as they continue to be thus. Undoubtedly appropriate, however that equates to a half-bagger in eight years, not a five-bagger including the leading REIT offered to produce the resources for the higher turnout, unpriced surveillance. Welcome to a wonderful new week of sketching again. Anna from the Blue Mountains branch reporting whilst Erin is in France, leading her joy filled Erin Hill Sketch Holidays.
First class of the week was in the crisp Blue mountains. Tuesday New Sketchers class.
This week was about seeing everyday objects with our new sketchers eyes.
We headed to The Hydro Majestic in Medlow Bath for spectacular views and a spacious cafe. There’s a rattan bike hanging on the wall, how can you sketch it? Next we headed to the sloping corridor. Cats alley. Incredible perspective issues here! And look at those scenes from the Windows! And that decor…. whoa! Thanks for having us Hydro Majestic. Always a delight.
Toni reports for the manly Tuesday general class that it was Blue sky and sun today, what a treat after so much rain. We started class by chatting about how to plan a sketch, selecting those aspects that please us and how we can ‘edit’ what we see and use a view or subject as inspiration, not just copy what’s in front of us. What freedom! Off we went to Sketch the gorgeous White House Flowers shop, with coffee and lunch at Sketch Cafe. Here below some wonderfully creative impressions. Well done!
Tuesday evening and Kathy says “Tonight we got bicycles ticked off then went happily ‘off piste’, as for various reasons only one intrepid sketcher made it to class. So we followed on from last week’s “People” and did facial features and proportions.” Gorgeous work!
Its Wednesday, my day in The Rocks teaching the General class. A visitor from The Blue Mountains Classes, and some sketching on the streets. The rain of course, meant we “had” to return to our favourite cafe for more coffee, lunch and sketching.
New Sketchers Manly on a Wednesday. Gaye reports….Warmup line drawing, studio fruit and veg, Manly vegetable market, Showbox cafe watercolour from fruit and veg market . We had a brush with fame Mike Witney was filming for Sydney weekender at our first choice of cafe  .. chatted on the way past 🙂
Blue mountains general class on a Thursday. A lovely start at Big Beet Cafe where we experimented with water soluble inks, brush pens, and played around with aquarelles and looked at what we thought were Blue Mountains colours. Next we headed to the top of Katoomba street, sat at the taxi rank and sketched some of Katoomba’s wonderful facades. Then Lurline street to capture some of the old guesthouses. What fun, and a nice sunny day too!
Manly General Thursday class with Toni. Warm and sunny, perfect sketching weather for our Thursday group. We started with coffee and Mill & Co, (the old Foundry 53) and then headed down to White House Flowers. Everyone found a wide-angle view they liked and then crossed the road for a close-up sketch. The Sketch Cafe was our last port of call to finish off our sketches. A warm welcome back to Sooze who joined us for a drop-in class. You’re welcome anytime!
Manly Thursday evening general class where treated to a wonderful studio set up by Kathy.
The Rocks New Sketchers on a Friday. A wonderfully open adventurous and spontaneous class this term. As we headed to The Rocks market to sketch our bicycle we spotted a double back wheeled bike perfectly positioned opposite some seats, next to the musicians. Thats was us! And here are the sketches. What a lovely day.
Manly general class on a Friday. Cold and damp but the rain held off for our Whitehouse Florist sketch. Our stylish couple Dave and Zorana arrived on two wheels looking very glamorous. Everyone managed great character filled sketches, inspired I think, from the heady scents flowing past our noses as each amazing bouquet was carried past us.
Manly new Sketchers with Toni…Today it was bicycles. As one of our sketchers said, Manly is the Amsterdam of Sydney, bikes everywhere! We had prepared some aquarelle and watercolour pages in the studio before we headed down to Manly Wharf to find some bikes that appealed to us. Fabulous negative shapes to look for. So much confidence in your sketches…Coffee and brownies at BareFoot Traders and fast people sketching. Great fun. Can’t wait for next week!
Its Saturday and the General class with Kathy was great! Chilly morning but rain happily held off . Mill and Co were very happy for us to spread ourselves out and sketch indoors and Whitehouse Flowers ordering coffees and meals as we liked. So many fab sketches. See for yourselves. Kudos to Anne for her remote sketch class too.
The new sketchers class Manly.
Happy Sketching, and don’t forget your homework! Most importantly, enjoy. Stay warm, Anna.
Term 2. Week 8. Flowers and Bicycles and all things nice. Welcome to a wonderful new week of sketching again. Anna from the Blue Mountains branch reporting whilst Erin is in France, leading her joy filled Erin Hill Sketch Holidays.
