Fishuary 2024: Day 16 - Freshwater fish @fish-daily
The tawilis (Sardinella tawilis) is a species endemic to Lake Taal in the Philippines, and the only entirely freshwater species of sardine. It came to be when the Taal volcano erupted and sealed off the lake from the sea in the 18th century, after which it adapted to a fully freshwater environment.
Though its life history interests me, it was very difficult to find images or footage of this little fish where it wasn't dead or dying. I hope that conservation efforts are succesful and that it continues to exist in spite all that stands against it.
Though it is a traditional food of the Philippines, in recent years it has been threatened by overfishing, pollution, predation by introduced species and of course, volcanic eruptions.

Note
yes okay finally. tell me your favorite foods. i personally am not a foodie so i like food that is bad for me i.e. philly cheesesteaks, fries, ice cream, chili, unfortunately i am a diet coke girlie :(
Filipino breakfast. Always. Everyday. That is my favorite thing on earth, forever and ever. Vigan longganisa. Dangit. Tawilis. Pritong Daing na Pusit. Salted red egg and fresh kamatis. Scrambled eggs. Sunnyside eggs. Sinangag (with extra garlic). Filipino corned beef. Cane sugar vinegar with sili on the side. And fresh buko juice.
Also, just all breakfasts in general. Waffles. Breakfast sandwiches. Mostly because I love eggs with everything.
And, of course, dinuguan. Which is my favorite food of all time.

Title: My Unforgettable Vacation ; Cavite
Introduction:
Hello i am Akira, I'm from grade 6 Responsable or in English Responsible and I will be sharing my unforgettable vacation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When it comes to vacation destinations in the Philippines, Cavite might not be the first place that comes to mind. However, this hidden gem of a province has so much to offer, from its rich history and cultural heritage to its breathtaking natural attractions. Join me as I recount my most unforgettable vacation in Cavite, a journey filled with surprises, discovery, and unforgettable experiences.
Immersing in History at Aguinaldo Shrine:
My Cavite adventure began with a visit to the Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit. Stepping into this historic site, I was transported back in time to the birthplace of Philippine independence. Exploring the rooms where General Emilio Aguinaldo once lived and seeing the artifacts that played a role in the country's struggle for freedom was a humbling and educational experience. Standing in the very place where the Philippine flag was unfurled for the first time gave me a deep sense of pride and appreciation for my country's history.
Unwinding in Tagaytay's Scenic Splendor:
Next, I headed to the picturesque city of Tagaytay, known for its cool climate and stunning views. The sight of Taal Lake and Volcano from the Tagaytay Ridge was simply breathtaking. I spent hours soaking in the panoramic vista, feeling a sense of tranquility wash over me. Exploring the vibrant food scene in Tagaytay, with its famous bulalo (beef bone marrow soup) and delectable tawilis (freshwater sardines), was a culinary delight. The city's cool climate and scenic beauty made it the perfect place to relax and unwind.
Nature's Bounty at Mount Pico de Loro:
For adventure seekers and nature lovers, a visit to Mount Pico de Loro was an absolute must. The challenging hike up the mountain rewarded me with stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The crisp air, lush greenery, and the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the summit made it a truly unforgettable experience. Standing atop the peak and gazing at the vast expanse below, I felt a profound connection to nature and a renewed sense of appreciation for its beauty.
Discovering Cultural Treasures:
In Cavite, I was also able to immerse myself in the local culture and traditions. The province is home to several festivals, and I was fortunate enough to witness the Caracol Festival in Tanza. The vibrant parade, showcasing colorful costumes and lively music, was a celebration of the province's cultural heritage. It was a joyous and festive atmosphere that left me with a deep appreciation for the warmth and hospitality of the Caviteños.
Conclusion:
My unforgettable vacation in Cavite was a journey of discovery, where I unearthed the province's hidden gems and experienced its rich history, natural beauty, and vibrant culture. From exploring historic sites like the Aguinaldo Shrine to taking in the breathtaking views of Tagaytay, and conquering the majestic Mount Pico de Loro, each moment was etched into my memory. Cavite may not be the first place that comes to mind for a vacation, but it truly exceeded my expectations and left me with a profound appreciation for the wonders that can be found in every corner of the Philippines.

Threatened by the new danger, the townspeople, together with the Agustinian Francisco Benchucillo, sought refuge in sanctuary of Caysasay. In 1955 the northern barriors of San Nicolas, Gipit, Bangin, Pansipit, Calangay, Sinturisan, Talang, Abilo, Balete, Bancora, Saimsim, Maabud, Mulawin, Tambo, Clumala, Alasas, Calawit, Pulangbato were seperated from Taal and formed into the municipality of San Nicolas.

📍EXPERIENCE A vlog is not something we expect to do in the coming year. Our group isn’t all that interested in vlogging, but once we finished our vlogs it seemed like we all had a great time doing it, and it was both enjoyable and stressful at the same time, which is something we all appreciate. On the way to Taal Batangas town, we’ve all began shooting at Robinson Lipa, where we’ll be discussing how to get there. We were all shy at the start of our first vlog, so it was a lot of fun for us. In the end, though, we will increase our self-esteem! Eventually, after about an hour, we arrived at the Balisong Shop and began interviewing the Balisong salesman. We were all awestruck because this was the first time we had seen the various styles of Balisong. After that, we moved on to the next location we wanted to visit. The Taal Basilica in Taal Batangas, Asia’s largest church, was first shot. During filming in Taal Basilica, we were all awestruck, awed, and stunned by the church’s splendor. We headed to the Caysasay Church in Brgy after filming at Taal Basilica. We all observed the exquisite baroque architecture of the church, as well as the design of the wall and sailing, when filming at Tatlong Maria, Taal Batangas. We decided to get lunch in Brgy after filming. We all enjoyed Tatlong Maria, and it was so wonderful that we were completely satisfied. We proceeded to the Lorenzo Ruiz Steps after dining; it was our first time seeing the Lorenzo Ruiz Steps, so we were astonished and impressed. We decided to take a group photo before moving on to the next location, and we must say that it was both memorable and stress-free. It was a great event for us and we continued on to our next destination: Barong Tagalog gown rental. We were all awestruck and delighted by the variety of gown and barong Tagalog designs. The only word we could say was “wow.” We all desired we could wear the rental gown, but we had to pay first. Our final decision was to take a break after an hour of walking and admiring the grandeur of historical sites before waiting for the lights to come on (Pailaw sa taal). They finally turned on the city of lights after nearly half an hour of waiting, and we began shooting our final vlog. We’ve all shared happy and amazing moments, learned more about the town’s history and tourism attractions, and gained a lot of self-assurance as a result.
📍SWOT ANALYSIS 📌Strength ⏺Taal known as the Traditional known for crafting Balisong ⏺Known as Barong capital of the Philippines ⏺The Taal church is the biggest Church in Asia ⏺Preserved the ancestral houses, Museum and Churches in the heritage Village ⏺Celebrating of Unique Festivals (Taal Elpasubat Festival) that highlight cultural, historical, culinary arts and crafts ⏺Presence of Unique establishments and resort 📌Weaknesses ⏺Weak promotional activities for tourism industry ⏺Noise and Smoke pollution on the main road disrupting tourist activity ⏺Various entry points ⏺Presence of Unaccredited accommodation establishment ⏺Presence of unrestored and or abandoned ancestral houses that pose danger to public safety ⏺No existing practice/ method for environmental matters such as waste management
📌Opportunities ⏺Strategic location/ presence of expressway and goods roads ⏺Neighboring towns with known tourist spots 📌Threats ⏺Modernization ⏺Extreme climate changes affecting the old structures
📍TOURISM SUSTAINABILITY OF THE TOWN
A historical land mark and ancestral houses make Taal the top tourist attraction in Batangas. Their town’s tourist sustainability is based on four factors: In the first place, the Old Houses and Churches have been preserved so that visitors or tourists can see them. And, of course, it’s also for the next generation to see. Festivals and Christmas are only a few of the events that take place there. Their time and effort were devoted to putting up Christmas lights and pyrotechnics in the evening to entice additional guests. Second, because it is their product, they are confident in selling it. We everyone know that Taal’s primary product is Balisong, which is made from Batangas. Everyone in Taal knows who made it and when it will begin. Then there’s the wedding gown, which is known as the Burdang Taal Wedding Gown, and the barong, which is also known as the Philippines’ capital of the Barong. Because their product was so good, you’d think that someone would be able to test it out and become famous in that area. This creates a sense of attractiveness in their locations as well. Third, there are people. The local residents were fantastic since even the children knew the history of every church and museum in the area. They also pay attention to the historical landmarks that are located there. The government, on the other hand, is in charge of making the locations more appealing, as well as managing the facilities within the taal. Seeing Taal, the nicest sight in Batangas this year, has taught me a lot about how to maintain a tourist attraction in a place.
📍RECOMMENDATION FOR THE BETTERMENT OF THE TOWN
Development of Taal product for souvenir items
Promotion of Tourism, products and services of Taal
Additional entertainment for tour around the town
Eco tourism protection and promotion
Provide easy access to the town

Tagaytay, situated south of Manila on the Philippine island of Luzon, is a well-loved vacation destination celebrated for its temperate climate. Perched on a ridge overlooking Taal Volcano Island—a live volcano encircled by Taal Lake—the city boasts captivating views. People’s Park in the Sky, located atop this vantage point, occupies the site of an incomplete presidential mansion. Additionally, Picnic Grove offers recreational opportunities with hiking trails and an exhilarating zip line experience.  It is approximately 60 kilometers away from Manila, the Philippines' capital city. Tagaytay has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Philippines due to its high elevation, cool climate, and stunning views of Taal Lake and Volcano. This being said, Tagaytay is considered to be the second Summer capital of the Philippines with the first being Baguio due to its cool climate thus is a favored destination from those relatively more humid areas of the Philippines.
Tumblr media
One unexpected adventure unfolded during the final week of August when my girlfriend and I embarked on a brief outing in the Litex area to find a ball gown rental for her upcoming debut party. The boutiques and rental shops were conveniently clustered together, offering a vast array of gown options.
Shortly thereafter, her mom redirected us from Litex to Katipunan Avenue, where her uncle resides. We enjoyed some snacks before her mom and dad spontaneously invited us for a motorcycle journey to Tagaytay City. As the late afternoon descended, we joined her uncle, his wife, and her parents for the ride.
Exiting Metro Manila during rush hour was challenging, with heavy traffic slowing our progress. By around 8 pm, we arrived in Silang, Cavite, and instantly noticed a change in the atmosphere. The air turned cooler, carrying the aroma of pine trees as we wound through the zigzagging roads toward Tagaytay City.
This marked my first out-of-town motorcycle journey, intensifying the thrill of the adventure. Upon arrival at the Mahogany Market, we savored a delightful dinner featuring the famous bulalo and a platter of tawilis—a local delicacy of Tagaytay.
As the night grew late, my girlfriend's mom arranged for us to stay at a nearby resort, providing an opportunity for family bonding and relaxation.
The following morning at 7 am, we prepared to return to Manila after a quick coffee. Hoping to avoid the Saturday morning rush, we journeyed back safely, arriving home with fond memories of an unforgettable escapade.

Reflection: Titleholders All
Matthew gives an interesting list of disciples. The list totaled twelve. Most of the twelve had an accompanying title. But all twelve were “titleholders.” The first was called petros. The second was a “brother” to Simon. Another was also titled brother to the “son of Zebedee.” Philip, Bartholomew, and Thaddeus were just named with no further appellations, but they were called by a generic term “disciples.” Simon was the Cananean. One stands out very conspicuously—Judas, whose title needed more than just a word: “who betrayed Him.”
I grew up in a small, sleepy farming town where everybody was named something and described as something more. Petrang Magtatawilis was named Petra, but was also known as the one who cooked and sold the best banana-leaf wrapped tawilis (a specie of sardine-like, fresh-water fish caught only in Lake Taal). Vicenteng Magsasahiyang was an old man named as such but who was more known for holding seances with the spirits of the deceased. Another one stood out, simply known as Tulingan. (I bet you can guess easily what it was that made him famous!)
Only a thin line separates fame and notoriety. And that thin line is sealed forever by what one does, what one chooses and decides to be and do. Those decisions define our destiny.
To be fair, eleven of the disciples went down well in history, for they did what was commanded them: “to go to the lost sheep of Israel.” All but one strutted and fretted their hour on the stage of life. All but one held on to their one-word titles. But one of the twelve was also doing all that and wanting to do other things besides. One was torn between two allegiances: to the Lord and to himself. And a series of little choices led the way to his final choice and decision—to sell his Master and Lord for a few pieces of silver.
It was the worst epitaph written in the history of the world, an epitaph that you and I would be well advised to never dream ever getting: Judas, “who betrayed the Lord.”
~Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB
If you were to write your epitaph now, what would it be?
A child of God—that’s who I want to be known for, dearest Lord.
Prayer
… for a deep and profound respect for life, especially for the unborn.
… for the strength and healing of the sick.
… for the healing and peace of all families.
Finally, we pray for one another, for those who have asked our prayers and for those who need our prayers the most.
GOD BLESS!
