April 5, 2024 - Guinea Turaco, Green Turaco, or Green Lourie (Tauraco persa) These turacos are found in lowland forests, often near water, in parts of western Africa. They feed on a variety of fruits, as well as flowers and buds. Their nests are bulky platforms made from sticks and fine twigs. Both parents incubate the clutches of two eggs and care for the chicks.

Seeping THrough The Night

The tropical indoor area definitely wasn't what it was a few year ago - quite some species seemed to have left - but this beauty at least was still present.

The Green (Guinea) Turaco (Tauraco persa)

is a medium-sized passerine bird native to tropical West Africa. This species prefers forests and savannas with abundant tall trees. It measures around 47.5-50 cm (19-20 in) long from beak to tip of tail and weighs less than 0.45 kg (less than 1 lbs.)

A truly striking bird, the Green Turaco has largely brilliant green and blue plumage. The underparts are dull black. The tail and wings are dark purplish. It has a thick red bill and bold white and black patches around the eyes. Males and females look alike.

The Guinea Turaco

A.K.A: Green Turaco, Green Lourie

Scientific Name: Tauraco persa

Region: Along the Central Western African Coast

Size: About 16"-17" (~40cm-43cm) long from head through tail

Interesting Note: There are three subspecies of Guinea Turaco.  Interestingly, they seem to have developed differing eye markings roughly based on their location.  The northwestern subspecies, Tauraco persa buffoni, has a black line below the eye and a white line in the top front from eye to beak.  The central subspecies, Tauraco persa persa, and southeastern subspecies, Tauraco persa zenkeri, have an additional white line underneath the black line.

Green Turacos

The Green Turaco or Green-crested Turaco, Tauraco persa, is a large turaco that is native to the forests of tropical west Africa.

OK KO Theory: Chicken and snake? Species diagnosis of Boxman and of Venomous

In OK KO fandom Lord Boxman is often likened to a chicken; for example, the wiki says that he has a chicken arm. But I’ll argue he more closely resembles a different, specific type of bird. And Venomous is certainly a snake; but what kind? I’ll get to him next.

Let’s start with this screencap [source]:

Notice: Boxman's nipples are green. That means his skin, as well as his hair, contains green pigment. Green pigment is completely non-existent among mammals.

But given his left arm, let’s look among birds. Some chickens (and many other birds) have feathers that look green, but it’s actually an optical effect caused by prismatic physical structure over another color (like yellow carotenoids or dark melanin)—not green pigment.

But there is ONE type of bird that has genuinely green-pigmented feathers... and that bird is called the turaco, or Banana Eater. Order Musophagiformes —Latin for "banana eater"— contains about two dozen species in six genera. And the roundest, greenest species is the Green or Guinea Turaco, Tauraco persa.

The green color. The crest of hair. The red eye.

Plus, turaco social habits: they live in family groups, often of around 10. Male turacos are invested in fatherhood, taking turns sitting on the nest and feeding chicks. During courtship, a male turaco will feed a female. A Turaco’s call (this is Tauraco leucotis) sounds a bit like wild laughter: not entirely unlike Boxman’s laughs of triumph.

Turacos are semi-zygodactylous: they have one toe that can switch between forward-facing and backwards positions. This coincidence could be used to explain Boxman’s bird hand going off-model and sometimes having three fingers, sometimes two: he’d be able to have either three fingers and one thumb, or two fingers and two opposable thumbs (that kind of extreme dexterity could be useful for fiddly mechanical work).

Pretty much all the turaco information I’ve found sounds an awful lot like Boxman. They are usually reclusive in the wild, but can be easily tamed/woo'ed by a human that shows them kindness. They’ll decide to fawn over certain humans; towards others they’ll be aggressive and attack on sight. They’re very territorial. While they can be quite affectionate, they don’t really make good housepets because they’re terribly messy.

And so I’m convinced Boxman is not a chicken-man, but a turaco-man.

Now for Venomous. “Snake” is clear enough: but what kind of snake? There’s mixed evidence in the show.

“Rattlesnake” is one clear option, based on the screencap at the top of this post, because of that distinctive tail… but there’s two problems. One: there are 36 species of rattlesnake, but none of them are purple (there is a black rattlesnake, though). (I’ve seen a fanfic in which Venomous is said to have DNA of an Eastern Indigo Snake (Drymarchon couperi), which are purplish; but while otherwise it’s an excellent fic, I have to disagree on this one point, because Eastern Indigo Snakes aren’t venomous.)

Two: Venomous’ business logo is a cobra – by the looks of the markings under its hood, it looks to be the Indian or Spectacled Cobra, Naja naja.

It’s interesting how these snake representations conflict. Rattlesnakes are venomous, to be sure, but they aren’t actually very deadly—especially with modern medicine. But cobras kill thousands of people every year; a cobra bite can kill a person in a half-hour. By using the cobra logo, is Venomous posing as if he’s more dangerous than he actually is? That would make some sense, since a dynamic in “Villains’ Night Out” is contrasting most villains’ pre-occupation with appearances against Boxman’s radical lack of concern over what anybody else thinks of him, and Venomous’ admiration of Boxman afterwards.

So, what type of snake is Venomous? I have to say it’s inconclusive, open to multiple theories.

But I do have a personal headcanon. The Eyelash Viper, Bothriechis schlegelii, is a very stylish venomous snake from Central and South America. It doesn’t have a rattle, but it is a pit viper related to rattlesnakes. It’s got distinctive eye ornamentation (fitting for a man who canonically wears eyeliner) and many color variations, including bright yellows and greens… and a striking black-and-green combination.
