The sleeplessness wasn't surprising. HiMERU regularly awoke in the middle of the night and couldn't fall back asleep. He frequently ran on only a few hours of sleep, sneaking naps where he could if he needed to.

Amagi should still be awake, he thought. HiMERU grabs his phone and unlocks it, staring a moment longer at the blurry selfie Amagi had taken of the two of them on his lockscreen. He didn't know why he never changed it.

HiMERU: Amagi, are you awake?

A few minutes passed and HiMERU began to worry about Rinne actually being asleep tonight. Of all the nights he needed--

Amagi: whats up dude? u need smth?

Right.

HiMERU: HiMERU couldn't sleep is all.

Amagi: say no more. ill be there in 5

HiMERU tapped out of Hold Hands and turned his phone off. He'd meet the other man at their normal meeting spot. He grabbed his coat and felt his pocket.

It was still there.

He should tell Amagi tonight.

In all reality, HiMERU knows that Amagi is probably aware of his secret with how he talked to HiMERU in private, but it would be best to get all of the cards on the table. It was bound to happen anyway, and he'd rather do it on his own terms.

As Amagi had said, he had gotten to their usual meeting spot on the roof of the building, cigarettes in hand before HiMERU. He took one of the cigarettes and placed it in his mouth, leaning in to Amagi's hand as he lit them together.

It was their little ritual and their bad habit.

"So why'd ya call me up tonight, Merumeru?" Amagi said, leaning on the fence surrounding the rooftop.

"He wanted to ah, tell you something important about himself." HiMERU follows Amagi's lead and leaned on the fence, taking a long drag of his cigarette to gather his thoughts. Amagi, for his part, didn't say anything else and let him.

"He, or he should say 'I' want to tell you about my brother."

It took a moment to catch his breath. Speaking about Kaname out loud was not something he did regularly, and for good reason.

"I did not know him very well, only becoming aware of his existence relatively recently. Our father had called me to ask me to mentor him.

"At first...I did not want to. I didn't know him, we had no connection besides our father, whom I disowned as a child, and no reason to mentor him, but...

"His voice was so innocent over the phone that day. It was impossible to say no to him, so I accepted. He got involved with Tatsumi Kazehaya, though, despite my warnings to him, and in the end..."

HiMERU trailed off. He couldn't finish the statement.

"He's in the hospital, right?" Amagi finished for him. "In a coma or somethin'. Vice prez told me about it."

Ah, so HiMERU was right.

"Why didn't you ever say anything?"

"I wanted to hear it from you, Merumeru."

The silence hung in the air.

"I wanted to know you trust me with that part of you."

Amagi's hand had found its way to his own. HiMERU did not pull away from the physical contact.

"He--I do."

He can't make himself look at Amagi.

"Thank you, for everything Amagi."
