tasuketsu episode 3 cements this show as the (unintentionally) funniest show of the season for me. MUST watch show for people that like trainwrecks. I've never been so confused yet so entertained by an anime before

So you know how there's quite a few great anime coming out this summer season? Yeah, we didn't get any of them picked by RNG. Hear what nonsense we had to watch (plus 1 good anime) in Episode 128- Confused and Upset!

The Best and Worst of the Summer 2024 Anime Lineup [Part One]
Recently, I’ve been getting back into anime, an interesting development given that I’ve averaged less than one anime season per three-month release window. I used to catch loads once upon a time, but I think having a job and a general change in my personal tastes made me more interested in video games for a couple years. That being said, shows like Delicious in Dungeon and Kaiju No. 8 piqued my…

Let's Anime 225 - It's Citrus Zest - Summer First Episodes - Part 2
Welcome, welcome! We did that thing where we finish watching some more first episodes. Well Dustin did, Lindsay only watched 4 more shows and they're all pretty terrible. Dustin has another 12. Gonna be a lopsided episode.
Here's what we cover: Bye Bye Earth, Days With Me Stepsister, The Elusive Samurai, A Journey Through Another World: Raising Kids While Adventuring, Love Is Indivisible by Twins, The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to be Archenemies, Mayonaka Punch, My Deer Friend Nokotan, Narenare - Cheer For You!, No Longer Allowed in Another World, Tasuketsu: Fate of the Majority, Why Does Nobody Remember Me in This World, Wistoria: Wand and Sword.

Tasuketsu -Fate of the Majority-
Broadcast: Wednesdays at 01:59 (JST) Genres: Action, Drama, Suspense Themes: High Stakes Game, Psychological
Synopsis The story follows a group of five in a world where people have suddenly disappeared. A mysterious self-proclaimed "Emperor" gathers five people together through anonymous messages and has them participate in a game. Participants answer the question "Do you want to live or die?" The game has only one rule: "Majority dies."
First Impressions
I'm honestly still trying to process what I just watched. The setup is a very standard survival game, but something happens at the very end of the episode that has me even questioning how to talk about it. The thing is, it's not exactly a twist because it's something that was well within the limitations of what the "Emperor" described, but I just wasn't expecting it to go there. I suppose I'll discuss in more detail under the cut, but first I'll try my best to discuss the rest of the episode as if that didn't happen.
So to start, what first jumped at me was the main character's lack of a personality, like I can't even remember his name despite them forcing a pun with it twice. Before the Tasuketsu begins, we get some personality traits hastily explained to us by the main character's best friend, and some mention of his parents being out of the picture, but we never really see any of this. He's just like "sorry I can't hang out my mom died on this day" and then it just skips to him laying in bed. It seems like the only things we know about this character just exist for the sake of the story, like he's this Gary Stu with the one flaw being he's bad with computers but it barely seems to come up.
Besides the main character being milquetoast, there's some baffling choices. The rules of the game are so convoluted I could barely follow, which is not a good sign for a first episode. It may be on purpose though, as the main character explained to the nice girl whose name I also forgot, The Emperor might be keeping things from them. The way he just says to her that he wants to find The Emperor with so little information to go on. Also there's a scene where a dude that didn't show up to the meeting place on the second day finds a gun and threatens to shoot the kid with earphones. The kid's like "Where did you find that" and he goes "LIKE I'LL TELL YOU" and then literally tells him with no further pressure.
Anyway, under the cut is spoiler territory so watch the episode first if you care about that kind of thing.
So the first elimination question of the show is "Male or Female" so the episode ends with the cliffhanger of the main character being eliminated because he's in the majority. Now I don't know what to think about the direction of this show. The opening had all these boys, so was that a red herring?
As I'm writing this I had this thought. They kept bringing up that the name of the game meant Absent Majority. Absent, not dead. So I started thinking about what if all the supposed dead are really there but only in spirit? That would be an interesting twist but on second thought I don't think that's it.
Earlier when the protagonist was talking to this one girl explaining his theories about the rules of the game (which btw why didn't he discuss with the whole group) they went to look for a scrap of paper to write a question on and found a "privilege" paper. This aspect of the game was extremely glazed over (probably on purpose) but what I think will happen in the next episode is that the main character will survive elimination because of that privilege. It's pretty disappointing because that'll mean it's a bait and switch cliffhanger which is pretty fucking cheap imo.

Anime: Summer 2024
Hello! It’s the start of the 2024 Summer season for anime, so it’s only fair that I sample some of the new series that are airing. Aside from Fairy Tail 100 Year Quest, I have avoided ongoing series and second seasons that are out this summer (and I am still working my way through shows). Continue reading Anime: Summer 2024

Seasonal First Impressions: Summer 2024 Stragglers
The good, the bad, and the ugly. Some premieres from the summer season I just didn't have quite enough to say on to warrant a full article.
Seasonal First Impressions is a column where I detail my thoughts, however brief or long, about a currently-airing anime’s first episode or so. I’ve done one of these once before, so you know the drill, let’s get into things. Tasuketsu -Fate of the Majority-: We start out with something that was just really quite bad! The manga is ongoing and began a solid 11 years ago, so I can only imagine…

pacing nightmare
whereas every previous episode of tasuketsu has moved at a pace so breakneck that it's impossible to understand anything that happens, episode 4 drives the pacing to a halt so not-Ash Ketchum can be annoying for a whole episode. the first episode to be merely bad instead of funny-bad, and i hope it returns to the latter
