Fic: ad infinitum
Rezaren knows his knight-commander always keeps her promises.
DRAGON AGE | REZAREN/TASSIA | WORDS: 4876 | RATED: T (AO3 LINK.)
It was near impossible for just anyone to attain an audience with the Imperial Divine. He had long been considered a reclusive man, more at home among dusty tomes and artifacts than in the company of most people.
Knight-Commander Tassia, however, was not most people. Although several years had passed since she had been in his dedicated service, she had never forgotten what it had felt like to fight by his side, united in their vision of a better Tevinter. She had never forgotten his captivating charms, the way his sheepish smiles belied a sharp contrast to the buoyancy and confidence of his movements, the way he tackled all the obstacles in his path with a near-boyish enthusiasm and zest for life and all of the opportunities which it provided.
Rezaren Ammosine had once made her feel like she could change the entire world. And maybe, just maybe, she still could.
Doing her best to ignore her clammy palms, she ascended the steps to the Divine's private quarters. While she highly doubted she would’ve made it this far had she not been given clearance, she would be surprised if he knew precisely when to anticipate her arrival, and even if he had, surely he could not anticipate what she was here to do.
Her hands felt vulnerable and exposed without the comforting weight of her warhammer. She wished she hadn't had to leave it behind, but such a clumsy and imprecise weapon would have only gotten in the way.
With shaking fists, she knocked upon his door, standing with bated breath for her call to be answered. Fortunately, she was not kept waiting for long. The wooden door creaked open and through the sliver of exposed space Tassia saw the impassive face of the Right Hand of the Divine, a slender yet surprisingly strong elf she knew only as Neb.
Familiar revulsion crawled up her throat, but she swallowed the bile back down. This was the man that Rezaren had sacrificed everything for, the loyal bodyguard for whom he had deemed it worth compromising all the morals he had once professed to hold dear. This was the man Rezaren had valued more highly than her—but she shoved that thought aside. It wasn't like that. It had never been like that. It was never personal.
It was always just business.
Whatever was best for Tevinter. [Read the rest on AO3]

No, seriously! Like be so fucking for real! Like, Ik Rezaren’s dick couldn’t have been that good that she, as a LEGAL PROTECTOR, couldn’t see reason! It took for him to keep undermining her and SHOWING HER that he was gon do what the fuck he wanted to do (piggybacking off of @sugawara-kkoushi as I had just read their analysis on Rezaren and I was inspired). And she had the nerve to boo-hoo at the end when Miri (one of his very real victims) killed his stupid, selfish ass! Ma’am! Did you forget that the very city and castle you work in is run on elven slave labor and one of said castle’s magical defense mechanisms was to curse the remains of enslaved elves to rise from within the foundations and walls to defend the people and place that enslaved them in the first place?! Tassia was dick-matized and/or straight delulu for sure!

But literally.

Finished rewatching Dragon Age: Absolution. The show as a whole isn't a masterpiece or anything, but they did really nail the writing of the Tevinter humans. They're all people who see themselves as the good guys, as the heroes of their own stories
Rezaren does all the things the stereotypical magister does, but if one was to believe the lies he tells himself, he has very sympathetic reasons for doing so. And the specific lies he tells himself are all very in line with Tevinter culture
Tassia sees herself as an upstanding member of Tevinter society. She doesn't like the corruption or the blood magic, she doesn't support anything the Venatori stand for. But she aligns herself with the power in Tevinter all the same. There's no reason to think she sees any sort of problem with slavery.
I also really appreciate the moment where Rezaren gives Tassia an order, she protests and then he repeat himself and she obeys. Regardless of how high ranking of a templar she's not a mage and she'll never outrank Rezaren.
Hira is of course the most interesting one because she was a member of the Inquisition. She was literally part of The Good Guys(tm) in DAI! She does see slavery as reprehensible!
Buuuuut then again. She was a noble mage raised in Tevinter. She has not shaken what her culture has taught her. She is willing to use Miriam as a bartered good. And her plan for Tevinter? Burning the place down and salting the earth would hurt the enslaved people of Tevinter just as much as the Venatori and Maigsters. She doesn't mention enslaved people at all in her grand motive rant. They're not why she cares. What happened to her and her family is why she cares. She wants revenge for herself, not justice for the people of Tevinter.
Anyway, I wish we'd had Tevinter characters in that vein in Veilguard. Tevinter villains with motives that don't revolve solely around personal power accumelation or bringing back the empire of old. People who are just terrible in mundane ways (mundane sans the magic, anyway, lol). Or even Tevinter allies who have all the right opinions on paper but still have to struggle with overcoming the culturally learned behavior of seeing people (elves especially) as tools, as expendable.
People were annoyed at Dorian defending slavery in DAI. I won't say I've never been, though my annoyance has always been more with the dialogue options one has in response. None of them are what I want to say, none of them challenge him in an interesting way. Regardless, Dorian having that opinion when we meet him makes him a far more believable and interesting character and more importantly, it says something about power, about cultural narratives and about the status quo as a potent political force for normalising reprehensible things

lrb there was a similar problem in the writing of dragon age absolution. the writers spent so much of their time (that they had already spread thin by having such a large cast of side characters that didn't need individual character arcs in a six-episode season) developing the tevinters, rezaren specifically, because they had to define miriam's backstory, fears, and motivations through them. in doing so, they made their villains extremely interesting; rezaren, because he demonstrated nuanced evil, had moments of pathos in between engaging in ploys for power and control; and tassia, conflicted between duty, her love interest, and the moral quandary of supporting her paramour despite witnessing his corruption.
meanwhile the writers think it's powerful writing to depict miriam jumping past a dozen other elves screaming and running for their lives to land in front of the child she got boiled alive, JUST to say, "we save us." like wow. thanks for the quip. this makes so much sense btw.

With the speculation that there might be more hybrid/multiclassing because of the smaller party size, I think I'm kind of reminded of Roland from Dragon Age: Absolution.
The wiki calls him a warrior, and he does fight with a sword and shield in the show. But, as illustrated in the fight he has with the other weapon and shield character, Tassia, he's a lot more agile and lighter on his feet. Tassia was a straightforward tank style of fighter. I wonder if he might be sort of a preliminary example of a hybrid warrior/rogue.

9, 12, and 28 for the podficcer wrapped asks?
9. Favorite pairing you podficced?
I really want to say The Emperor/Taroe, but since Taroe is my OC, it feels a little too obvious (and almost a little unfair)? Other than them, I really enjoyed making all of the "Fandom for Robots" podfics for Voiceteam, so I'm going to say bjornruffian & Computron, their friendship means so much to me <3
12. What podfic plans do you have for next year?
There are two fics in particular that I would love to podfic in the near future:
Mind Games by Cauchy (Baldur's Gate 3, The Emperor/Belynne Stelmane)
ad infinitum by ziskandra (Dragon Age: Absolution, Rezaren Ammosine/Tassia)
Other than that, I have no specific plans for next year. Probably more BG3 stuff? Possibly some Dragon Age? Maybe I'll go back to Transformers (I have so many fics I've been wanting to podfic but haven't gotten around to yet)? Or maybe I'll find some completely new fandom, who knows!
28. Favorite podfic you made?
Linger Till Dawn, absolutely. Yes, I wrote it, after years of telling myself that I couldn't write a story to save my life, and that's why it holds a special place in my heart. It's not perfect, but it's mine <3
