‘Portrait of Peter Deunov’ painted in the 1930′s by Atanas Tasev. Peter Deunov (1864-1944) was a Bulgarian philosopher and teacher who drew on Orthodox Christianity to create beliefs his own which deviated from the Christianity he was trained in as a priest. Between 1900 and 1944 he spoke, had his words recorded and organised a community around what he believed in rural Bulgaria. There is a UK based community that follows on from where Deunov’s work stopped, here they are. On the other hand today he is ‘heretic of the day’ according The Catholic Herald, I am sure they will have a different heretic next week....

One part of this new sci-fi idea is that, since they are fighting against a hive-minded enemy, said enemy can predict the fighting style the better the more often they came into contact with it because they spread knowledge among themselves. This leads to the fleet prioritising people who know obscure material arts.
More information on the characters and the specific material art style under the cut
First Officer Mirak and Captain Zeraik Kebede: Mirak and Zeraik are friends and often train with each other. Mirak uses Tosei Ryu, a japanese stick fighting style that utilises fairly direct and pragmantic movement. Zeraik uses nanotechnology of the Saquor, the known for their slyness species she is one quarter part of, combined with movements from the Ethiopion material art Dambe that mostly uses blows and swungs to the head with a covered fist.
Third Helmsman and kybernetics expert Abdel Quraishi and Science Officer Tasev: Abdel trained a chinese style named Baguazhang since his youth, a style that is known for its movements in circles and evasive, swift attacks (its the style airbending in Avatar is based on). Tasev, being of one of the logican-clans of the Heansec, uses a fairly pragmatic style they developed, that uses mostly kicks and blows but also utilieses natural weak points of the body and dodging. Since both of them are rather defensive fighters most of their match consists of them dancing around each other, arms touching to always stay in perfect distance and to be able to control the movement. That them constantly working beside each other on the front consol of the ship lead to them having a crush on each other makes things only more complicated.
Security Chief Ebo Thankur-Kebede and Security Officer Rosk: Ebo is naturally deeply loyal to his mother, while Rosk is wary about her ruthless behavior that benefits the fleet in its whole but endangers several other high ranking officers and does everything to sabotage her plans. But there is also underlining attraction, leading to fairly explosive trainings matches. Ebo actually learned how to fight with a ancient egyptian khepesh and a shield, while Rosk uses a traditional style of his people, the Kyeedan, with a one-handed saber.
