CELEBRATING, NISF SHA’BAN, SHAB-BARA’AT
On or about the evening of Subnda, March 5, through evening of Tuesday, March 7, 2023 (Dates may vary as the Islamic lunar calendar depends on the movements and sightings of the moon.)
The Night of Fortune and Forgiveness in the Islamic calendar.
Naming the Days Feature by Habib Todd Boerger
Niṣf Sha’ban (Mid-Sha’ban) falls between the 14th and 15th of Sha’ban, the eighth month in the Islamic calendar. The event is also known as Shab e-Barat, Bara’a Night, the Night of Records, or the Night of Fortune and Forgiveness.
Associated with God’s decrees for the coming year, the night is thought to be a time when Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) is especially merciful. Muslims all over the world celebrate Mid-Sha’ban with special prayers, Holy Qur’an recitation, staying awake during the night for prayer, praying for loved ones, giving charity, fasting, and other acts of devotion.
Many Muslims consider it the second holiest night of the year (after Lailat ul-Qadr).
As with all Islamic holy days, this holiday is a time to practice charity, devotion, forgiveness, gratitude, and service. Spending the night of Mid-Sha’ban in prayer is recommended, as is fasting on the 13th, 14th and the 15th of Sha’ban.
Mid-Sha’ban Recitation of Surah Ya Sin
1. After praying Maghrib or I’sha on the night of Mid-Sha’ban, read Surah Ya Sin, the Holy Qur’an’s 36th chapter, with the intention of long life in Islam and faith (Iman). Offer the Mid-Sha'ban Supplication (below).
2. Then read Surah Ya Sin with the intention to ward off affliction from one’s self and from the followers of Prophet Muhammad (SallAllahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) offer the Mid-Sha'ban Supplication.
3. Next read Surah Ya Sin with the intention to receive sustenance and Allah’s provision without reliance on people.
Offer the Mid-Sha'ban Supplication.
Mid-Sha’ban Supplication
O. Allah! You shower favors on everyone, and no one can do You any favor.
O. The Possessor of Majesty and Honor,
O. The Distributor of bounty and rewards, there is no one worthy of worship except You.
O. Allah! If in the Mother of All Books that is with You, You have written me down as someone who is doubtful of achieving salvation, or deprived, or rejected, or without enough substance, Oh Allah, with Your Grace, remove all of these misfortunes from me.
And in the Mother of All Books that is with You, establish me as someone who is blessed, with abundance provision and charitable good deeds.
Indeed, what You said in the Book You sent through the tongue of Your Blessed Prophet is True
That Allah changes and establishes what He wants and with Him is the Mother of All Books.
My Lord! For the sake of Your Divine Manifestation on this fifteenth night of the blessed month of Sha’ban in which You issue all Wise and Irrevocable Decrees,
Remove from us all calamities and hardships, those that we know about as well as those that we don’t, while You know everything.
Truly, You are the Most Powerful, Most Generous.
And may Allah the Exalted shower blessings and peace on Sayyidina Muhammad (SallAllahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam), and on his family and his companions.
And all praise is for Allah, Lord of all the worlds.
Ameen.
Salat al-Tasbih (Prayer of Glorification)
After Maghrib, pray 2 rakats, and then another 2 rakats (out loud if led by an Imam in community or silently as an individual). In every prayer position repeat the following: Subhanallah (Glory to God), al-Hamdulillah (Praise to God), Laa illaha illAllah (there is no god but God), Allahu Akbar (God is greatest) 10 times.

Jumu'ah Khuthbah: 2 December 2022
As we ready ourselves for the live and blessed presence of Shaykh Taner and Shaykha Muzeyyen (Anne) in a matter of days in our shores, Subhana'Allah! Alhamdulillah that we've made it into our eery post-COVID world. All the more richer as a spiritual community that managed to thrive in spite of the sense of loss and rightly enforced physical distance.
#1. Shaykh Nishaat reflected on how we draw closer to Allah with a mutual relationship of love. In fact, it is in our everyday lives, that we draw closer to Allah. Our trials make us realise who we are, Subhana'Allah as my post-accidental reality is doing. We overcome our negative trials by persevering in our desire to be with Allah. Through drawing nearer to Allah by striving against ourselves sincerely, we realise our true fitrah (nature).
#2. We were reminded through Shaykh Taner about the need to foster a better relationship with people. Relationships are often soured because of miscommunication and muddied by holding onto presumptions. Instead we should hold onto patience and do an activity together as the key to infuse these relationships with purpose in pursuit of a common goal!
As personally experienced with your Mimi in preparation for the shared joy of your Aunty Tash and Uncle Peter's wedding, and Maryam Bhen in decorating for your Abbu's birthday. I learnt that she takes notes from me, on how to love her own husband 😊
#3. The next blessing was an appeasement of my worries and seeing a reward for converting my stress therein, into the Positivity Prayers - seeking collective guidance!
We found out that my post-accident rehab team are closing down their Durban branch, but my breath of fresh air of a new Physiotherapist from Johannesburg will go private and remain in our service and close to her mother in KZN, Insha'Allah, Subhana'Allah and Allahu Akbar! I am seeing the collective power being offered through the Positivity Prayers. Shukran Ya Allah (gratitude to Allah) that an important basic daily due of our Tariqa, has such far reaching and deep power!
#4. Was again a Shaykh Nishaat piece of wisdom where he spoke about how our Zikr is performed in a sequence of how to hold on to Allah. Again, my pressing Tasbih (remembrance tool) as our Istinja container (for the cleaning and purification process after passing our excretory functions) being noticed by my non-Muslim star of a Physio. Alhamdulillah for the opportunity to clarify both our understanding of a fundamental, daily practice in our lives!
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tasbih
Shaykh Nishaat continued to remind us that everyone in the silsila (spiritual lineage) is representing Allah in the manifested world. When we sing ilahi (devotional music), we remind ourselves what we have as the proverbial rope to Allah. Here, Jalaluddin Rumi (Allah bless his secret) was quoted as saying that a spiritual journey that would take several years, will take a fraction of its time because of our spiritual guides. Alhamdulillah!
#5. Ultimately we have various levels of nafs (ego) that are worked on proclaimed Shaykh Nishaat. Us human beings are given the choice to glorify Allah through Zikr with our freewill, which other creations don't possess. Again gratitude to Allah for seeing the depth of our ocean of devotion, where the deeper you go, is its depth realised!
Now we pass over to your Abbu's Arabic Khuthbah, with gratitude that the next time insha'Allah we will be in the presence of our spiritual mentors!
Alhamdulillah × infinity
...that we made it into our almost post-COVID world!

Back when I was younger, the guys who used to blast the tracks in their cars would turn it down and even listen to nashids or some Quran because it was Jumm'ah. The sisters would cover their heads when they walked past the mosque and they made an effort to dress modestly even if they weren't 'practising'. The chillers used to come to college with hats and a slight stubble. The guy who was known to cuss and swear would keep a tasbih in his pocket and try to control his tongue. The gangsters would lift their hands up with teary eyes when the Imam would make a du'a because they knew what they were doing was wrong. The lads who used to link with the girls would not do it on Friday. People didn't have much knowledge but they were humble and had respect for the Prophet ﷺ and this blessed day of Jumm'ah.
People mock, laugh and think these type people are weird and hypocritical but their actions were nothing but manifestation of true love, sincerity and adab. One prayer in one moment of this one day is enough to change an entire lifetime. Lose everything in life - but never lose that light in your heart for this day and for Rasūlullāh ﷺ. How many millions of people did Allāh change just because of a love they had for the Beloved ﷺ and because of a simple action of sincerity which was beloved to Him.

The Life of The Prophet Muhammad: Exemplary Ethics of The Prophet: Tolerant
HE WAS A JEW BUT AFTER ALL A HUMAN
He was sitting with His friends in an open place in Medina. A funeral was passing by in front of them. It was obvious in every respect, that the funeral was a Jewish one. The prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stood up and waited until the funeral passed by. His friends were amazed and warned him by thinking “maybe He had not realized the situation”:
“O Apostle of Allah! This was a Jew.”
In other words, He was not a Muslim. So, it had not been necessary for you to stand up.
Yet, the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had been aware of everything from the beginning; so, he answered:
“But at the same time he was a human.”
GIVE UP BOTHERING ABDULLAH
His friends complained to the Apostle of Allah (PBUH) about one of their friends. This was Abdullah, the son of Huzafa.
They said: “He makes jokes too much and has been occupied with idle things.”
The prophet Muhammad (PBUH) did not heed it and said:
“Give up bothering Abdullah because he is a person who really loves Allah and His apostle.”
CURSE TO A DRUNK
A Muslim who had been caught as a drunk many times was brought to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in the same state. At that moment, someone who could not tolerate it said to the drunken man:
“May Allah’s curse be upon you”
By knitting his eyebrows with a stiffed face, yhe prophet Muhammad (PBUH) called out to the person who cursed as follows:
“Do not curse Him. I swear by Allah that, he has always loved Allah and His apostle since I knew him.”
A GOOD SUPPLICATION FOR TAIF
In order to be freed from the troubles of the lengthened siege, his friends wanted him to curse to the city of Taif. When he went to the city of Taif many years ago in order to spread His religion and to get help, he had been met by stoning and spitting. He raised His hands and prayed:
“O Allah! Enrich the folk of Taif with the prosperity of Islam and send them to Medina with the spirit of friendship.”
His supplication was accepted fully as he wished.
EVERYBODY DOES WHAT FITS HIM
The Prophet had stopped for lunch during a journey. He chose a tree that was away from the place where his friends had camped in order to have a rest. After he fell asleep, Ghawrath the chief of a tribe, who was an unbeliever and who wanted to kill him noticed him. He wanted to make use of this opportunity by killing Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) and became famous among Arabs. He tiptoed toward him excitedly and quietly. He took Hazrat Muhammad’s sword, which was on a branch of the tree, and touched the throat of the Prophet, who was sleeping, with the sword. Touched by the cold metal, Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) opened his eyes and saw Ghawrath grinning arrogantly. Ghawrath was sure about his victory and asked the Prophet arrogantly,
“O Muhammad! Who will save you from me now?”
Seemingly, he was right because if he had pushed the sword for two centimeters, it would have been the end of Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh). However, there was no sign of excitement or fear in the Prophet. He answered the question of Ghawrath by shouting:
"Allah!.."
Upon the terror of the exclamation “Allah”, Ghawrath fell down on his back and his sword fell off. Then, Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) stood up suddenly and grabbed his sword. He touched his throat with the sword. Now it was just the opposite. The Prophet asked him smilingly and calmly,
“O Gavrath! Who will save you from me now?”
Unfortunately, Ghawrath had no chance to say “Allah!” because he was an unbeliever. However, he proved that he was very clever giving the following answer,
“O Muhammad! Let everybody do what fits him.”
Upon this life saving answer, Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) removed his sword and said,
“You are free; you can leave now.”
THE MAGICIAN
A Jew from Medina who was called Labid cast a spell on him. The apostle of Allah was affected by it. Later on, he was saved from it by Allah. And he learnt the name of this evil doer. However, no one disturbed this Jew. No one said anything to him. The Jew, Labid was forgiven silently.
IF I WERE NOT JUST
He was distributing the booty among his friends. One of the newly converted Muslims objected to it.
“This distribution is not just.”
And the objector walked away angrily. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) became sad. He quietly said:
“Shame on you, if I were not just, then who could be?” And then, he turned towards his friends?
“Bring him to me kindly without rebuking him.
UNFAMILIAR WITH SALAH
The son of Abu Sufyan, Muawiya had recently converted. He did not know that speaking is not allowed during salah and one day at a congregation prayer behind the prophet Muhammad (PBUH), he spoke. He said to a person who sneezed:
“May Allah have mercy upon you.”
Muslims worried that the prayer would be invalidated and they wanted to silence him with hand signals and glancing. This exited Muawiya more. And he continued to speak.
“Why are you looking? I did not understand anything.”
This time, Muslims silenced Muawiya by stroking their legs with their hands. At last, the prayer finished. However, Muawiya was drenched in perspiration because of the sense of guiltiness. The prophet Muhammad (PBUH) came up to him.
“It is not allowed to speak about world matters while praying. Salah consists of, tasbih, takbir and the Qur’an.”
After years of this incident, Muawiya narrated it as follows; "I had never seen a better teacher than Him. He neither scolded me nor was angry with me”.
EVIL FOR EVIL
An immigrant Arab wanted from him goods and money by hanging and pulling his garment. The prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stumbled. This formed a blood blister where the garment was pulled. He did not say anything. He asked the man when he calmed down.
“Now tell me whether reprisal would be applied for the harm you have done?”
The immigrant Arab confidently answered:
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because, you do not repay anyone evil for evil”
Upon this answer, the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) only smiled. Then, he gave an order. They loaded goods onto the camels of the Arab.
THOSE WHO ATE CAMEL MEAT
He was sitting with a crowd group of friend in the mosque. They had eaten camel meat all together a short time ago. One of them passed wind unavoidably. A fetid odor covered the place. All people there were looking at each other with worry and embarrassment. The adhan would be recited soon and the person who would go out for renewing ablution was going to be understood as the “inducer”. The prophet Muhammad (PBUH) who evaluated the importance of the issue ordered them:
“Let all of those who ate camel meat with us renew ablution.”
His friends formed a line to have ablution. The convict was saved from being exposed.
CURSE TO DAWS
His friends requested from Him.
“O apostle of Allah! We are unable to cope with the fierceness and mischief of the tribe of the son of Daws. Curse them so that they will settle down.”
He turned towards the Qibla and raised His hands. Everyone was waiting to hear the words of cursing from his lips. They were whispering among themselves.
“The son of Daws will be ruined!”
However, the supplication that was heard from the mouth of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) bewildered everyone there.
“O my Allah, let the son of Daws find the true path. Let them see the truth.”
He repeated this three times.
TOWARDS THE MAN WHO WANTED TO MURDER HIM
A person who wanted to kill him was brought to the Apostle of Allah (PBUH). Since the man did not know what would happen, he was trembling because of fear. The apostle of Allah smiled and tried to silence the man who attempted to murder him by saying:
“Do not fear! Even if you had tried, you could not have succeeded in killing me.”
Then, he gave an order; the man who attempted to murder him was released.

Turtledoves of the Metaphysical Realm and the Expected Revival
QUESTION: What factors allow someone to be open to spirituality and the metaphysical realms?
ANSWER: As some people see materialistic considerations as everything, they lead a life closed to metaphysics. Although character plays a certain role at these people’s remaining closed to spirituality, the point that really needs to be considered is their making no serious effort in this respect, not giving their willpower its due. Even if they say they also believe, people immersed in materialism, whose reasoning is reduced to their eyesight, condemn themselves to a severe narrowness in terms of their thoughts and opinions. For example, they do not believe in the miraculous happenings we term as wonder (karama), whose number amounts to thousands, reported in different centuries by trustworthy people with no probability of lying. Some even go as far as not wishing to accept miracles. Even though they become obliged to accept them owing to the soundness of the narrations, they try to make explanations based on material causes. People who limit their world of thoughts with materialism over time blunt their ability and capacity to understand the metaphysical aspect of phenomena. As a consequence, they cannot see beyond apparent things and occurrences, cannot grasp the wisdom contained in seemingly negative happenings, and as they are not imparted the “inner meaning of happenings” (ta’wil al-ahadith), they cannot understand the different meanings in unfolding events.
Transcendental reality beyond occurrences and the tongue of wisdom
Actually, occurrences hold different meanings for people with respect to the way they take place, as if each of them were a manifest sign. However, in order to be able to see that, it is first necessary to see occurrences through latifa ar-Rabbaniya—the spiritual intellect—and to have the ability to synthesize. In other words, a person should read not only religious affairs but also other phenomena and occurrences, such as a book, trying to catch the connection among occurrences with a holistic perspective, and trying to see the cause and effect relationship among them.
Even if some occurrences seem to be a coincidence and it is remarked that their chance of realization is one out of hundred, when other relevant occurrences are considered, it will be seen that the calculations of probability begin to fall as low as one out of a thousand, a million, or a billion... If individuals live by “sieving life,” if they evaluate the occurrences that come to their mind, catch their eye, and strike their feelings and senses with a holistic perspective, they will then be able to draw very deep meanings from them and from the connections among them. In the same way, with every occurrence they will see, by personally witnessing it, that there is no place for blind chance in this universe, even in the slightest degree. If they consider occurrences as separate entities, however, as some philosophers do, they will fail to see that every letter in this universe indicates and points to the truth of faith in God.
In this respect, in order to open up to spirituality, a person must give his or her willpower its due, sieve occurrences well, and believe from the beginning that nothing is meaningless—so much so that one must know that even a glass that falls from our hand and breaks has a meaning with respect to the “inner meaning of happenings.” Let this not be misunderstood: this perspective does not mean thinking too positively or too negatively in the face of occurrences and becoming spoiled with one and hopeless with another. On the contrary, it means comprehending that there is a certain meaning every occurrence tries to convey with its own tongue.
The mysterious key to opening to metaphysical realms: Supplication
Secondly, a person needs to deepen his theoretical knowledge through worship and obedience in order to be able to see that metaphysical dimension of existence. Doubtlessly, supplication is the foremost among the most important acts of worship, because it is the title for sincere devotion to God. Since supplication is an act of worship that transcends causality, it is the most important ladder making the person reach meta-causality horizons.
So what is the most important and greatest demand a person should ask from God when supplicating?
For example, in our morning and evening recitations we express our wish to be saved from Hell and to attain Paradise. Keeping away from Hell and entering Paradise are essential matters for anyone. However, a person must have a demand of much further importance than these: that is the demand of knowing God correctly and never being heedless of Him.
This must be the highest target believers wish to attain in their prayers with a deep concentration and consciousness. When a man raises his hands in supplication, he must first ask for God’s forgiveness and good pleasure and be so insistent in this demand that he must feel a tingling in his hands with the blessings from God and virtually feel some spiritual effulgence showering down. When maintaining such a state of alertness from head to toe, one must pray: “My God increase me in faith, knowledge of You, love of You. Make me enraptured with yearning for You. Fill my inside with Your love. And make me a person crazy for Your path!”
And if you rise at night and ask for these a thousand times from God with a sincere heart... then see how God Almighty tears apart the veils of the physical realm, opens new metaphysical horizons for you, and awakens you to spiritual realms beyond time and space. It should not be forgotten that whoever pursues a certain goal and strives seriously towards it, what he or she seeks will be granted. Nobody cares about and gives anything to a beggar with hands behind the back and saying in an offhand attitude, “Are you giving or not?” In the same way, acceptance of a person’s prayers depends on his turning to God in utter devotion, putting his head down on His doorstep, knocking on His door insistently, and believing that his prayers will be answered.
Although supplication is so important for a believer, let me sadly express that the act of worship that is given least importance in our time among Muslims is supplication. Unfortunately it has long been a victim of formality and formats. Even the supplications in mosques are victimized to formality, caught in a web of familiarity and heedlessness.
It should not be inferred from these words, however, that the worship and supplications made by people filling mosques are not accepted. I would never dare say that. God Almighty counts even the pettiest good deed to the advantage of a person and gives a reward even for the slightest of them. But it should not be forgotten that a person bears a value in direct proportion with what he values. If you value a worldly property, a mansion or a villa, for instance, then you attach your value to it. If you value Paradise, your value is worth Paradise. But if you have attached your servanthood and desires to love of God and yearning for Him, since He is unlimited, you also reach an unlimited immensity.
If you glorify Him with your remembrances (tasbih, tahmid, and takbirs), and say, “O God praises be to You to the number of the particles in the universe!” and can feel this within, and shiver every time you remember Him, then Your place in God’s sight will be accordingly. As it is stated in a hadith, whatever God’s place is in your sight, thus will be your place in His sight. Ask yourself: How much value do you attach to Him? How much do you think of Him? How much time do you spend with Him? How often do you spell His name, and how much are you with Him? Each question is very important.
People are not closed to metaphysics; they close themselves to metaphysics
God Almighty may bestow extra graces on a person without his making a strenuous effort. This is another thing. But the objective and essential criterion is a person’s giving his willpower its due. God Almighty states, “And that human has only that for which he labors...” (an-Najm 53:39). If we express it the other way around, a person does not gain anything but the reward of his working, giving his willpower its due, and running on the path of God.
Thus, a person who says, “I cannot open to metaphysical considerations. I do not know the World of Representations or Ideal Forms (Alam al-Mithal). I cannot see occurrences with a holistic perspective, make a connection between them and reach a synthesis... ”, first needs to see whether he really did what he should have done concerning this issue. I wonder whether that person—in addition to his scrupulous care at offering the obligatory acts of worship—rose up for the Tahajjud Prayer for forty consecutive nights, prostrated himself and asked for what needs to be asked for? A person’s not doing these indicates how much value he attaches to spirituality. This person’s horizons of spirituality will be accordingly. So even though it is true that some people are closed to spirituality, it isn’t God who condemned them to this closed state. On the contrary, they closed themselves to spirituality. To put it more correctly, as they do not do what needs to be done for the sake of opening to metaphysical realms and do not give their willpower its due in this respect, they remain closed to spirituality.
Even though it was not included in the question, I would like to point out one more fact about the issue: The continuation of this assembly of revival which has taken start and presently promises hope to the entire earth and placing it on its right ground will be realized by capable people who not only know sciences and religious disciplines but are also open to metaphysics. At this united point of physics and metaphysics, if we can raise heroes of willpower who will carry out the requirements of these realms, humanity will awaken to a new spring by means of those heroes of spirituality, who are friends of God and who prefer Him over everything else. If so, the face of the world will smile again and the entire earth will witness a new revival throughout.

Naming the Days Feature by Habib Todd Boerger Niṣf Sha’ban (Mid-Sha’ban) falls between the 14th and 15th of Sha’ban, the eighth month in the Islamic calendar. Mid-Sha’ban Recitation of Surah Ya Sin 1. Mid-Sha’ban Supplication O. Allah! You shower favors on everyone, and no one can do You any favor. O. The Possessor of Majesty and Honor, O. Indeed, what You said in the Book You sent through the tongue of Your Blessed Prophet is True That Allah changes and establishes what He wants and with Him is the Mother of All Books. My Lord! For the sake of Your Divine Manifestation on this fifteenth night of the blessed month of Sha’ban in which You issue all Wise and Irrevocable Decrees, Remove from us all calamities and hardships, those that we know about as well as those that we don’t, while You know everything. Ameen. Salat al-Tasbih (Prayer of Glorification) After Maghrib, pray 2 rakats, and then another 2 rakats (out loud if led by an Imam in community or silently as an individual). In every prayer position repeat the following: Subhanallah (Glory to God), al-Hamdulillah (Praise to God), Laa illaha illAllah (there is no god but God), Allahu Akbar (God is greatest) 10 times. And Allah knows best. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid-Sha%27ban
