British singer-songwriter Zayn Malik has signed with UTA for representation across music, film and television, among other areas, Variety has exclusively learned.

The former One Direction member’s last full-length effort was 2021’s “Nobody Is Listening,” and before that, he released 2018’s “Icarus Falls,” and 2016’s “Mind of Mine,” which gave way to the chart-topping and R&B-leaning single, “Pillowtalk.” Zayn is currently working on his fourth studio album, according to UTA.

In the years following “Nobody Is Listening,” Zayn released three songs; the most recent being his November cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Angel,” in honor of the late guitarist’s birthday, and “To Begin Again,” a 2021 collaboration with Ingrid Michaelson. His previous duet partners include Taylor Swift, Chris Brown, Snakehips, M.I.A., Becky G and Sia, and he has also contributed to soundtracks alongside Taylor Swift on “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever,” for “Fifty Shades Darker,” and Zhavia Ward on “A Whole New World,” from the 2019 live-action “Aladdin” reboot.

Outside of music, Zayn has collaborated on collections with fashion houses such as Giuseppe Zanotti and Versus Versace. Throughout his career, he has garnered a Billboard Music Award, American Music Award, MTV VMA and two Brit Award nominations.

Zayn joined One Direction in 2010 and contributed to four out of five of the boyband’s hit albums including “Up All Night,” “Take Me Home,” “Midnight Memories” and “Four,” all of which racked up multiplatinum awards across the world. The singer announced he was leaving the band in 2015, and the year following, the group went on indefinite hiatus.

Okay well in today’s decent news, Zayn and Gigi (and PA Taryn) got papped in NYC taking Khai to the aquarium out at Coney Island. Bye bye Zayn’s blue hair, he shaved it off, but hello stylish plaid coat and ofc Zayn looks good with any hair, it’s ridiculous really. And Ingrid Michaelson teased the To Begin Again video- coming soon? Pap pics of Zayn would suggest YES! EDIT: oh! YES sure enough-- it premiers tomorrow!!! Things go right downhill after that though-- first off, not me being excited about Liam doing art stuff only to discover it’s a picture of PRINCE PHILLIP. Uggghh WORST REVEAL EVER LIAM, nooooo.

And the news doesn’t get better from there I’m afraid; TMZ reports that Olivia is being harassed by a stalker who keeps showing up at her AND JASON’S home (in LA). Apparently the stalker is upset about her and Harry’s ‘relationship’. That’s scary and I hope she and her family are all right and have the support they need! Meanwhile, the fact of the whole “she and Harry live together in LA” thing being so obviously and completely debunked by this, combined with the fact that the entire Holivia story is based on them having been photographed together off set two(2) times, EVER, both in a single 24 hour period 4 months ago, is finally too much for even head stunt sponsor deuxmoi; as of last night they said they don’t know if she and Harry are “still” together. The publicists aren’t giving up that easily though, and would rather make their client look horrible even while exploiting her serious personal crisis than give up their headline grabbing narrative (hmm, familiar); there was a scramble to regroup and what they were able to come up with to shore up their story was that Olivia lied on her court documents about where she lived. WOW... actual wtf, industry handlers are just really sincerely the fucking scum of the earth huh??

SPEAKING OF WHICH… “sources” say Simon Cowell is “broken and betrayed” (HELL YEAH, nice) and feeling the pressure from recent allegations against him and Syco and The X Factor. He “doesn’t feel like he should be made to look like the bad guy” BOO FUCKING HOO asswipe, maybe you shouldn’t have BEEN the bad guy! We’re told that he’s dealing with it by asking Cheryl Cole for help, and possibly thinking of calling Liam “as he’s worried that members of 1D could start turning their backs on him publicly,” UGH YES PLEASE THAT’S HOT. Out of all the boys people-pleaser Liam is certainly his best chance, true, but I’ll hope for the best (members of 1D turning their backs on him publicly! Someday we’re gonna see it- more than we already have- and it’s gonna be GOOD.)

Anyway that was a bunch of unfun news, let’s close on a high (and perfectly harmonized) note- Louis liked a post of vocal coach Helene’s about working with 1D, an incredible sounding video of OT5 singing Strong. “To get a chorus sounding strong, tight, clean and solid vocally you MUST work A Capella to hear what’s going on. We did so much of this...and it was always great to hear how the 3 part harmonies blended together with their individual sounding voices.” It IS always great to hear, thanks for that Helene, so nice.

Essay 3: American Poltergeist and Poltergeist

The movie American Poltergeist follows five college students, and their experiences in a house with a poltergeist. The owner of the house an older white women rents out the rest of her house to these five college students, which I thought was odd. And one of the girls even said during their first night at home " why would she rent to college students?" which I think is a valid question. The original movie poltergeist focuses on a suburban family in the 70's, and it explores the discrepancies between the dream of the perfect life and the reality of that life. The American poltergeist is a spin-off of poltergeist, not a recreation but they have a lot of similarities. For one the static tv screen is at the beginning of this movie, the hauntings only happen at night, things move in the house and lights turn on and off. The main difference between the two films is the poltergeist itself, instead of a monster that was in the original the new poltergeist is a ghost, the ghost of ax murderer Lizzie Borden. In the original, the family is haunted because the housing development was built on a cemetery and the graves weren't moved before construction. The daughter  The newer version, however, focuses on college students, and their relationships with each other. As well as their relationship with the house that they are moving in to. During the year that this movie was made in 2015, there were four major events on college campuses (Zimmerman, 2016). Three of them were lawsuits concerning rape at college campuses, and the fourth was a documentary about rape on college campuses called "The Hunting Ground"(Zimmerman, 2016). The year 2015, was the first year that more than one rape trial had been held (Zimmerman, 2016). I think that because of the period of the movie and the fact that the film was about college students, I theorize that the director was trying to address this scary fact and bring it to the public eye (Zimmerman, 2016). Sometimes it's hard to imagine that people are so unstable that they would rape another person. The movie victimizes the women, and the hauntings only occur to them and not the two men in the house. I think that speaks to the victimization of rape and how powerless the person feels. As well as the use of the word victim to describe women or men faced with that. 

 In the movie, Taryn one of the college students finds out that she has a relationship with the house that they moved into. She was born in that house, and her family was killed in that house. She had nightmares of her parents drying in the basement and of her mother hanging herself in her old bedroom. The house won't let her leave, and the owner of the house and the neighborhood cop are in cahoots. The students find out that the house that they are staying in Lizzy Borden's old house. Lizzy Borden killed her family in that house in the 1800's and then generation was executed in the 1900's by a relative possessed by Lizzie Borden. Taryn Borden is the only living relative of the Borden family line; thus she is the only one who hasn't been killed or inhabited by her ancestor Lizzie Borden. In the middle of the movie, we find out that Lizzie is using Diana the house owner and the neighborhood cop as her henchmen so that she can inhabit Taryn. After a party that the students were throwing, the ghosts of Diana and Lizzie killed most of the people at the party except four including Taryn. They try the exercise Diana the house owner who has become a slave to Lizzie Borden's ghost, but it didn't work because she wasn’t inhabitting her at the time. 

Before watching this movie I hadn't seen or read anything about Lizzie Borden, I had heard about her in passing, but I didn't know much about her life. This movie reminds me of our ghost unit in class because the students disrupted the uncanny, and as a result, Lizzie Borden came to inhabit a new person. The ghost of Lizzie Borden continued living because she could “absorb enough life-energy from living creatures to prolong its shadowy existence almost indefinitely”(Cavendish). She took the living and controlled them and used their power to control and take the life source from others. Her ghost remained living because she took so many lives that it kept her alive. The house and the land that the house is sitting on seems to be the haunted dwelling. And as a result of the disturbance people died and the spirit of Lizzie Borden was able to inhabit the living body of Taryn.  I really like this quote from Ghostland, I think that it sums up the reason for house hauntings, "and though ghosts may be specific to the places that they haunt, they can reflect larger preoccupations and concerns of their time and place, echoing the anxieties of a community and its people”(Dickey, 2017).  

The house is now a historical haunted house, and it has been converted into bed and breakfast. I thought that was funny because of our class discussions on dark tourism and the chapter in Ghostland about the Lemp Mansion (Dickey, 2017). We are all both fascinated and terrified of ghosts and hauntings, and these haunted places like horror movies seem like a safe place to explore them.

Musician Zayn Malik, Simone Ashley (Bridgerton), and comedian Mo Gilligan are among the stacked cast who will lend their voices to the new CG-animated family comedy 10 Lives from director Chris Jenkins (Duck Duck Goose).

Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda) and Dylan Llewellyn (Derry Girls) round out the cast.

The flick is the story of a pampered and selfish cat who takes for granted the lives he has been dealt. After carelessly losing his ninth life, he begs to be given a second chance, an opportunity to show he can learn from his mistakes. Eventually, his wish is granted but with hilarious stipulations. GFM Animation will present first-look footage at AFM.

In the film, Gilligan voices Beckett, the pampered feline with a taste for fine food & lazy days who doesn’t know what’s about to hit him when he begs for a new set of lives. Ashley voices Rose, a dedicated and passionate research student intent on saving the world’s bee population. Malik voices two characters, Kirk and Cameron, twin brothers who like to think they are as tough as they come but who, deep down, want nothing more than to please their mum.

Okonedo voices Grace, an ethereal yet no-nonsense woman with the power to grant Beckett his new set of lives, and Llewellyn is Larry, Rose’s socially uncomfortable lab partner.

Producers on the pic are Guy Collins and Sean Feeney for 10 Lives Productions Ltd, with casting by Robyn Klein and Jeremy Ross. The animation studio is L’Atelier Animation in Montreal.
