Thinking about Adam Nagaitis in the Inside Epsiode 4 Blu-ray special feature saying that the lashing “unlocked [Hickey’s] potential” because he’s so right. Hickey has this innate potential for power over and the utter destruction of others but until ep4, he’s never really tapped into it. The lashing changes Hickey but in the exact opposite way that Crozier wanted it to. It makes him more himself. For the first 3 and a half episodes, he’s trying to gain Crozier’s trust and respect because he thinks that’s the only way he can survive in the navy. But Crozier having him lashed for something Hickey thought he’d be proud of him for changes that belief. He realises that, to survive, he doesn’t need or even want Crozier’s trust and respect. And that frees him. He stops attempting to ally himself with Crozier and instead becomes his adversary.
