Oh yeah for sure but the Befort group consciously experiences the most reincarnations and every one of them is grounds for new ~Trauma~, not to mention that they're literally being haunted and hunted by the Enma the whole time, so I feel like their quota for reaching the end of their rope is a little bit higher than even Tina's or Dumas'. (Heck we see Palza cave under the constant strain right at the start)
And then there's Tarlant who is a resilient little outlier and should not be counted.
In general I can appreciate the absolute horror of what the Children of Befort have done to themselves but I don't think I fully appreciated when I was younger - as I do now - Tarlant's attitude about the whole thing
because he is unquestionably the funniest and with his "I guess we're doing this now, huh?" attitude I feel like that's what I would do in his situation
as opposed to some of the others he just seems very stable and he'll make the best of whatever they end up having to do (because what other options do they have), and I can relate to that

Christmas Eve was spent cosily on the couch with bubbles (our current favourite is Tarlant - a small family producer).
We woke up to a white Christmas and some thoughtful gifts.
I baked a pie (and burnt my forearm).
We got ourselves annual passes to the local conservation area and started making use of them today.
This ends my photo-dump-catch-up.

Binge-Watching: Fantastic Children, Episodes 8-10
In which I realize this is a show full of Cookie Cats, Helga finds a moment’s peace, and the plot starts collapsing in on itself.
Family Lost
If there’s one thematic idea at the core of Fantastic Children, it’s the idea of losing your family. The Befort Kids reincarnate over and over again, each time, slipping into a human family and growing up with them, only to leave them behind when the time is right. No matter how much they might love their family, they always have to leave them behind. And it’s clear none of them are as comfortable with that sacrifice as they try to pretend. Everyone’s got lingering memories of the people they lost, memories they try to erase to hold onto their identities but refuse to fully fade. That’s how the weird shadow demons fight them in the first place: reminding them of the people they lost and asking them, “Don’t you want to go back to when you were loved instead of pursuing this miserable goal that doesn’t let you love anyone?” Hasmodye almost gave in to that temptation last time, and he’s still not sure if letting those memories go was really the right choice. But Tarlant’s the only person he feels comfortable confiding those fears in. Soreto gets an awful reality shock when she sees her former human father in the streets, worn out and desperate from losing her. But she shuts those feelings down for the sake of the mission, desperately holding onto the belief that once they succeed, they won’t have to suffer anymore. Aghi, meanwhile, tries to play the hardass and call everyone else out on not properly forgetting their old families. But even he’s harboring memories of leaving his little sister Bel, and God, the moment where he soothes her by singing the ED song to her as a lullaby on that creaky swing in her yard was powerful. The weight of loss hangs heavy on all their shoulders, no matter how much they try to deny it.
Family Found
On the other side of that equation is Helga, who’s never had a real family to call her own. She’s been subject to cruel treatment at the orphanage ever since she lost her parents and has nowhere to return to. Except now, Thoma’s invited her into his family. And for the first time, she has a place she can call home. She’s got a house, a roof over her head, a loving mom who gets righteously pissed off at her previous treatment like an absolute queen (”What a horrible director! Listen, as far as I’m concerned, you can all stay here forever!”), and a rambunctious family that teases and spars with each other (”Maybe my parents just didn’t teach me well!”) but still cares for each other 100%. And man, it’s so touching watching her open up to them. That moment when she’s so overwhelmed by her new mom’s kindness that she breaks down crying in the shower? My fucking heart, man. And we get to see her laughing, playing, having fun, drawing pictures of something other than the mysterious place that’s always calling her (”Nice clothes... do I have any?”)... god, it’s so good. And it’s all the more painful when she and Chitto leave in the middle of the night. I’m beginning to suspect that Helga’s a Befort child herself, but whatever her connection to those albino vampires is, that’s one thing she shares with them: no matter what kind of loving family she finds, she leaves it behind to search for the mysterious place she believes will grant her peace. But she also tells Thoma not to leave his own family behind, because she knows how sad his parents will be to miss him, even as she doesn’t extend that same kindness to herself and thinks she has to leave them and yep, okay, I’m sad again. With the Befort kids finally bearing down on her, it looks like things are only going to get harder. Here’s hoping she finds her way home when all is said and done.
Tangled Up
So there’s a lot of good stuff going on in Fantastic Children’s emotional and thematic planes. Unfortunately, I think the actual plot is starting to lose me. Remember how I praised this show for how it slowly doled out information and built its mystery up piece by piece? Yeah, well, I hope you’re ready for that to be swapped with completely overwhelming exposition dumps and minutes on end of characters “As you know”-ing each other about critical information to unnaturally exposit to the audience. Christ, what the hell happened? How did this show’s deft hand suddenly get so damn sloppy? We’re absolutely bombarded with information about how the Befort kids are trying to open a Zone, and the Ged Group calls it the Ged Dimension, and the old-before-their-time folks we’ve been seeing were touched by the Zone’s energy which aged them up and lets some of them use an energy called Orsel that looks like blue lightning, and apparently Tina could also control this Orsel stuff? And also that creepy Dumas kid is around seventeen now, and he goes by Demain and is pushing the Ged Group to experiment on this stuff as the prince’s advisor? And he got all this information from kidnapping Mel back in 1901 because she still had some memories left? And also the Zone is apparently the world beyond death or something??? And the weird symbols from that Fragment rock were a code to build a machine to access the Zone and transcend space and time??? And almost all of this is thrown at us with no room to breathe, despite there being a perfect opportunity for us to learn about it when the inspector stumbles across the code room and puts the pieces together himself. So once again, the show drowns us in exposition too early and ruins the thrill of figuring it out alongside the characters, taking the fun of discovery out of a genre that lives and dies on the strength of its discovery. The fact that this is becoming a trend is not a good sign.
Odds and Ends
-The Sibling Card? Gee, wonder what that could be referring to.
-”Dancing...” skdjhasjkdhasdjkh poor dude
-”But even Wonder gets lonely like that.” Man, I wonder who built these sentient sentinels in the first place. What technology allows that to happen?
-Ummmmm... oh boy, Thoma, why the sleepwalking?
-AH SHIT SPIRIT BOMB
-So what happened with the guy who just vanishes? The Befort kids say he’s not dead because he “doesn’t have anywhere to go,” which could mean any number of things...
-Amedio, you traitor.
-Man, I wish I had a flying segway.
-Oh boy. Why is Gherta scared to see Demain?
-...I’m suddenly getting very big Inside vibes. That’s not a good sign.
Things remain, as ever, weird. See you next time!

Calendrier de l’avin 2017 - En guise de conclusion
Tumblr media
#womendowine 💪)!
