ASOIAF fancasting –> House Targaryen: Georgia Hirst as Valaena Velaryon
“He was the only son, and second child, of Aerion, Lord of Dragonstone, and Lady Valaena of House Velaryon, herself half Targaryen on her mother’s side.”
Naturally, this fancast evokes a lot about Visenya, who was Valaena’s eldest daughter. I am in love with the theory that Valaena, being half-Targaryen herself, was the original rider of Vhagar . . . even if that requires her to be dead by the time of the Conquest.

ASOIAF fancasting –> Mistresses of Aegon IV: Ellise Chappell as Bethany Bracken
“Bethany was groomed by her father and sister expressly to win the king’s favor and displace Missy Blackwood. In 177, she caught Aegon’s eye as he visited at Stone Hedge to see his bastard son, Aegor. By now, the king was fat and foul-tempered, but Bethany delighted him, and he took her back with him to King’s Landing. However, Bethany found his royal embraces distressing. For comfort, she turned to a knight of the Kingsguard, Ser Terrence Toyne. The pair was discovered abed by Aegon himself in 178. Ser Terrence was torturned to death and both Lady Bethany and her father were executed.”
Just one example of Aegon the Unworthy’s over-the-top sense of entitlement. We get the feeling that Lady Bethany never had any real choice in her life, becoming little more than grist for Aegon’s atrocity mill.

ASOIAF fancasting –> Consorts of House Targaryen: Jessica Brown Findlay as Jeyne Westerling, wife of Maegor the Cruel
Lady Jeyne of House Westerling had been married to Alyn Tarbeck, who had died with Prince Aegon in the Battle Beneath the Gods Eye. A few months later, she had given her late lord a posthumous son. Tall and slender, with lustrous brown hair, Lady Jeyne was being courted by a younger son of the Lord of Casterly Rock when Maegor sent for her, but this meant little and less to the king.
It’s interesting how proud and highborn the Westerlings really are, with scions of this house mixing in with the Lannisters every few generations, and producing some of the most memorable characters. Perhaps part of their mission in the main series is to regain some of that lost glory.

ASOIAF fancasting –> Mistresses of Aegon IV: Marley Shelton as Jeyne Lothston
“Jeyne was brought to court by her mother in 178, when she was fourteen. Aegon made Lord Lothston his new Hand, and it was said (but never proved) that he enjoyed mother and daughter together in the same bed. He soon gave Jeyne a pox he’d caught from the whores he’d been seeing after Lady Bethany’s execution, and the Lothstons were then all sent from court again.”
This veteran actress has an irresistible horror-movie air about her, evoking the sense of belonging to a cursed family with a haunted hall, and being involved in an affair with (possibly) her own father . . .

ASOIAF fancasting –> Consorts of House Targaryen: Joely Richardson as Elinor Costayne
“Only one of the seven speakers was known to the common folks of the realm when they set out: no less a person than Queen Elinor herself, the Black Bride who had found Maegor dead upon the Iron Throne. Clad in her queenly raiment, which grew shabbier and more threadbare by the day, Elinor of House Costayne would travel the Reach giving eloquent testimony to the evil of her late king and the goodness of his successors. In later years, giving up all claims to nobility, she would join the Faith, rising eventually to become Mother Elinor at the great motherhouse in Lannisport.”
Did I sort of mix up my fancasts for Elinor and Ceryse Hightower? Maybe. Still, I like the serene energy of Joely as one of the wives who survived Maegor - and most likely had the happiest life afterwards. We do know more of her than Maegor’s other non-Targ wives, at any rate.

ASOIAF fancasting --> House Tully: Charlotte Hope as Celia
“Jaehaerys had been betrothed to Celia Tully, daughter of the Lord of Riverrun.”
A very pretty fancast for a girl who I imagine to be the jewel of the riverlands, well versed in courtly manners and fit to be consort for a prince.

Random fancasting --> Favorites of Rhaena Targaryen: Hannah New as Elissa Farman
“The scant writings she left behind show that even as a child Elissa Farman was convinced the world was ‘far larger and far stranger than the maesters imagine.’ Not for her the merchant’s dream of reaching Ulthos and Asshai by sailing west. Hers was a bolder vision. Between Westeros and the far eastern shores of Essos and Ulthos, she believed, lay other lands and other seas waiting to be discovered: another Essos, another Sothoryos, another Westeros. Her dreams were full of sundering rivers and windswept plains and towering mountains with their shoulders in the clouds, of green islands verdant in the sun, of strange beasts no man had tamed and queer fruits no man had tasted, of golden cities shining underneath strange stars.”
Another shoo-in from Black Sails for ASOIAF’s seafarers, this is one lady who perfectly looks the part for this fascinating character.

Random fancasting --> Children of Elaena Targaryen: Dan Stevens as Jon Waters // Saoirse Ronan as Jeyne Waters
“Following in Daena’s footsteps, she bore the bastard twins Jon and Jeyne Waters to Alyn Velaryon, Lord Oakenfist.”
With Valyrian blood on both sides, these twins were probably as beautiful as true Targaryens.

ASOIAF fancasting --> House Mormont: Ray Winstone as Jorah
“The knight smiled. Ser Jorah was not a handsome man. He had a neck and shoulders like a bull, and coarse black hair covered his arms and chest so thickly that there was none left for his head. Yet his smiles gave Dany comfort.”
One of my favorite actors to feature on the historical-movie circuit, he combines all the aspects of Jorah except, possibly, being a little too fair of complexion. This is definitely the face of Dany’s “bear” and a man who has fought against fierce enemies in exile lands.

Random fancasting --> People of Dorne: Gabriella Wilde as Cassella Vaith
“After the Submission of Sunspear, Aegon escorted the hostages that the king had gathered from the lords of Dorne back to King’s Landing. Among them was Cassella Vaith, a willowy maid with green eyes and pale white-blond hair, whom Aegon ended up keeping ‘hostage’ in his own chambers. When the Dornishmen revolted and murdered King Daeron, all the hostages were to be killed, and Aegon - by then bored of her - returned Cassella to her place with the other prisoners.”
Tall, willowy and sweet-faced, this seems like a natural fancast for the king’s mistress from the sands of Dorne.

Random fancasting --> People of the Crownlands: Jamie Chung as Jonquil Darke
“The slender mystery knight known only as the Serpent in Scarlet also had a great following; when finally defeated and unmasked, ‘he’ proved to be a woman, Jonquil Darke, a bastard daughter of the Lord of Duskendale.”
As has been stated in the series, girls get the coats of arms whilst bastards get the swords... so what do bastard girls get? The notorious Scarlet Serpent with an unknown mother defies the norms.

ASOIAF fancasting --> House Targaryen: Wilf Scolding as Viserys Plumm
“Later, scurrilous rumors came to suggest that Lord Plumm, in fact, died at the sight of his new bride in her nakedness, and that the child she conceived that night was by her cousin Aegon - he who later became King Aegon the Unworthy.”
While definitely being of the blood of the dragon, I imagine Viserys Plumm to be a shy, plain-faced child, as awkward as his mother was in her youth.

Random fancasting --> Children of Elaena Targaryen: Josh Whitehouse as Robin Penrose // Tabrett Bethell as Laena Penrose // Dakota Fanning as Jocelyn Penrose // Rachel Hurd-Wood as Joy Penrose
“She married thrice in later years, twice at a king's behest and once for passion. She gave birth to seven children, then declared that if seven was sufficient for the gods it would do for her as well.”
These four children of a Targaryen princess aren’t mentioned individually or given personality traits at all, but it’s fun to think about what they might be like. Robin, as the only boy and heir, would be conscious of his duties and responsibilities - but I also think he’s popular amongst the girls, with a Targaryen look to his features, and an innate love for music. Laena, the eldest of the girls, inherited the true Targaryen look from her mother, but is as wild as her aunt Daena. Jocelyn is the one who’s always being compared to her beautiful and outgoing older sister, whilst she herself is considered plainer and prefers books to company. Joy, the youngest, is the darling of the Penrose clan and possesses her mother’s intelligence along with refined Penrose features that are considered very attractive - she’s the “little princess” of her mother’s brood.

Random fancasting --> House Baratheon: Manu Bennett as Orys
“It is said that Baratheon unchained her with his own hands, wrapped his cloak around her, poured her wine, and spoke to her gently, telling her of her father’s courage and the manner of his death. And afterward, to honor the fallen king, he took the arms and words of the Durrandon for his own. The crowned stag became his sigil, Storm’s End became his seat, and Lady Argella his wife.”
A man with as much screen cred as any method actor who starred in the show, Manu Bennett perfectly fits the wild and stormy personality of this character.

House Targaryen fancasting --> Hera Hilmar as Jenny of Oldstones
“Though she dwelt half-wild amidst ruins and claimed descent from the long-vanished kings of the First Men, the smallfolk of surrounding villages mocked such tales, insisting that she was only some half-mad peasant girl, and perhaps even a witch.”
There’s something irresistibly romantic about this fancast for Jenny, and it’s my headcanon that red hair is really common in the riverlands. Plus it’s a nice idea to imagine that Cat and Lysa looked a bit like Jenny too.
