Son of Pulp / Fils de Pulp
NOTE : On fridays I usually like to publish articles or inspiration sessions, Iâve just finished to record a video about jewelry making, did turn out as planned, the upload is long, crap internet connection crap and the upload froze twice while I was trying to upload it on youtube... My relationship with technology most of the time...
So I decided to repost on old article instead. Hope you like it !
It was realeased in 1994, it was a hit at the time, and we still talk about it today. One of my favorite movie of all times, and one of the directors I admire the most.
To make this article I based myself on two books, I picked what I thought could be interesting to share with you, I made my little mix switching from french to english.Â
If you are a Tarantino lover, I can only recommend you to get those : Quintessential Tarantino, Edwin Page, Edition Marion Boyars Publishers LTD 2005 Quentin Tarantino⊠Fils de Pulp.
The Birth of Pulp Fiction /Â La naissance de Pulp Fiction
«Half of my inspiration is from life and the other half is from those movies I watched.» Quentin Tarantino
Pulp :Â A soft, moist, shapeless mass of matter A magazine or book containing lurid subject matter and being characteristically printed on rough, unfinished paper.
It is during a chat between Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary that the idea of Pulp Fiction rose. At the beginning, the project was initially called «Black Mask». The idea was quiet simple: creating 3 stories using the âpulp patternâ. In 1993, while Quentin was in Amesterdam, finishing off the script, Harvey Weinstein successfully convinced Miramax to take part in this project. Which also happened to be co-produced by Danny De Vitoâs company, Jersey Films with a rather small budget of 8M$.
Tarantino had originally wrote the script for the Tri-Star studio, who said no straight away partly because they didnât think it would be funny I wonder whoâs laughing now ^^
The direction «You always have to surprise the viewer, but you have to use reasonable ground situations that could happen to anybody [...] I like to do an unexpected U-Turn at some point, and all of a sudden, without any explanations, the viewer finds himself in another movie.»
«The idea is to take genre characters and put them in real-life situations and make them live by real-life rules.»
The music «When Iâm writing a script, one of the first things I do is find the music Iâm going to play for the opening sequence. I canât go forward until I figure out how Iâm going to start - what the opening mood music will be.»
«In my opinion, Pulp Fiction embodies a RockânâRoll version of western spaghetti [...] a clear solution came up to me while I was listenning to Kool and the Gangâs Jungle Boogie; I had a sort of revelation, I thought that not only this movie was influenced by western spaghetti but also Black movies shot throughout the Seventies (the blackxploitation era).»
Pulp Facts
The Royal with Cheese. The opening exchange between Jules and Vincent about what the French call Quarter-Pounders is a reminder of the conversation between Jim and Huckleberry Finn about why the French donât speak English.
We never find out what is in this black briefcase, some people believe that it is the diamonds from the bungled heist in Reservoir Dogs, while some think Marsellusâ soul is somehow stowed away in it (pretty funky theory right ?! ). However for the truth to be known, Tarantino actually said that he didnât know what to put in the case, so decided to leave it to the viewers to decide.
Mia and Vincent on the dance floor. This scene was inspired by a dance sequence in Jean Luc Godardâs movie «Bande Ă Part» (1964).
Butch and Marsellus : the reunion. This is reminiscent of the scene in Hitchcockâs «Psycho» (1960) when Janet Leighâs character, Marion Crane sees her boss crossing the road when she stops at traffic lights. Another interesting fact that can be mentionned is that the following events (the chase and  what occurs in the pawn shop) were based on Roger Avaryâs ideas.
Mr Wolf. Mr Wolf is based on the âcleanerâ character played by Jean Reno in Luc Bessonâs «Nikita» (1990).
Vincent and Jules : The duo. Thereâs a clear on-screen chemistry between the two actors, a chemistry that John Travolta actually mentionned in an interview  : «Weâre just natural together. We canât help it. We donât even try. We just are, and thatâs very rare.»
Lots of things happen in this movie while people are on the John /Â Beaucoup de choses dans ce film se produisent dâune maniĂšre ou dâune autre prĂšs des chiottes.
«Lots of things happen in this movie while people are on the John.» Tarantino has managed to make an element of real life which is ignored or seen as relatively unimportant in other movies vital to his narrative : here you see what you donât see in other stories on the big screen; those things that we all do in our daily lives and which brings more ârealnessâ to it (people eating, taking showers, brushing their teeth, talking idly, returning from buying food and drinks...). This is partly why Pulp Fiction stands out from most other films.
«When you dare to make a peculiar movie, you shouldnât be scared of how people respond to it. And even if some of them donât like the movie, this doesnât define them as âfoolsâ. Itâs just not their thing, thatâs all. Nowhere it is written that a movie has to be a âuniversal piece of workâ.»
- Quentin Tarantino.

tarantinophile replied to your post: You being happy about a great Bible study bears as much importance in the world as me having a really good talk about the Harry Potter books.
Guess who just earned a place on my âcool kidsâ list?
