Bloodborne: A Study of Environmental Narratives and Ludonarrative Harmony.
VII. Conclusion
While this paper only addresses Bloodborne as far as concerns about ludonarrative harmony go, that is far from the extent of the concept’s applications within the field of video game studies going forward. Engaging with games and looking for this blending between the ludic and narrative elements proves fruitful as an exploration of developer intention and whether or not those marks have been missed. Without ludonarrative harmony, players are faced with disjointed and un-immersive experiences in their narrative games. Games that deemphasize narrative are, of course, less concerned about ludonarrative harmony, though the vast majority of things being produced by gaming companies as of this paper’s writing to involve some form of narrative progression.
To summarize, Bloodborne gives its players a sense of harmony between its narrative themes and its gameplay by blending its environmental storytelling, narrative elements, and gameplay into a cohesive whole. This paper looked at how each of these elements worked, moving from the most broad, environmental storytelling, to the most complicated and narrow, ludonarrative harmony. Through an exploration of the narrative expectations of Bloodborne and comparing those with the gameplay, we can see that the game emphasizes its narrative themes throughout the play experience by utilizing elements like health damage, enemies, and item descriptions to effectively blur the line between what is narrative and what is gameplay.

A Captivating Delight: 'She Loves Me' Shines at 42nd St. Moon
She Loves Me, the enchanting musical currently gracing the stage at 42nd St. Moon from June 8 to June 25, is a true gem of theatrical craftsmanship. With a book by Joe Masteroff, music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and based on a play by Miklós László, this production offers a delightful journey into the world of romance and unexpected connections.
"She Loves Me" is a heartwarming musical that tells the story of Amalia and Georg, two employees at a 1930s European perfumery who are constantly at odds with each other. Unbeknownst to them, they are also secret pen pals who have fallen in love through their heartfelt letters.
As the story unfolds, Amalia and Georg navigate the challenges of their workplace while unaware of their deep connection. Alongside their colleagues, including the charming womanizer Kodaly, the eager-to-please Sipos, and the vivacious Ilona, the characters find themselves entangled in a web of mistaken identities and romantic entanglements.
Through a series of comedic mishaps and misunderstandings, the truth behind Amalia and Georg's pen pal relationship is eventually revealed. As their love blossoms, they discover that true love often hides in unexpected places and that their initial animosity was merely a facade for their true feelings.
Filled with memorable songs, including the beloved "Vanilla Ice Cream" and "She Loves Me," the musical showcases the complexities of human relationships, the power of love, and the transformative nature of forgiveness. With its enchanting setting, endearing characters, and timeless themes, "She Loves Me" captures the essence of romance and leaves the audience with a warm and joyful heart.
Under the skillful guidance of director Peet Cocke, the cast brings the story to life with remarkable talent and infectious energy. From the moment the curtain rises, the chemistry between the characters is palpable, immersing the audience in their intertwined lives.
Leading the ensemble with grace and charisma, Sophia Alawi portrays the endearing Ilona, capturing her character's vulnerability and resilience. Riley McFarland's portrayal of Georg is equally commendable, his heartfelt performance capturing the essence of a lovestruck romantic. Together, Alawi and McFarland create a captivating and believable connection with their co-workers at Maraczek’s Perfumery, igniting the stage with their blossoming love stories.
The supporting cast shines brightly, each member leaving an indelible mark on the production. Nick Nakashima brings depth and warmth to the role of Sipos, while Jourdan Olivier-Verde's portrayal of the charismatic Headwaiter is brimming with charm and charisma. Marah Sotelo delivers a stellar performance as Amalia, effortlessly capturing the character's wit, charm, and longing for love.
The creative and production team's efforts are truly commendable, with Daniel Thomas leading the way as musical director, ensuring the melodies and harmonies soar with precision and emotion. Leslie Waggoner's choreography adds an extra layer of elegance and fluidity to the production, seamlessly blending with the narrative. The work of Adriana Gutierrez (Costume Designer), Kia-Hao Lo (Scenic Designer), and Brittany Mellerson (Lighting Design) beautifully create the atmosphere and visual tapestry of the show, transporting the audience into the world of the 1930s European perfumery.
Tanya Telson's stage management expertise keeps the production running smoothly, while Emma Gifford's assistant stage management brings precision and organization to the backstage chaos. Stewart Lyle's technical direction ensures a seamless integration of technical elements, enhancing the overall experience for the audience.
"She Loves Me" not only boasts a talented cast and crew but also benefits from the inclusion of members of Actors' Equity Association, guaranteeing a high level of professionalism and expertise on stage.
She Loves Me at 42nd St. Moon is an exquisite musical experience that radiates warmth, charm, and undeniable talent.

Part of a cycle of Orientalist films in which white people undergo exotic adventures in the Far East, with the female stars (Dietrich, Harlow, Stanwyck) playing characters with names like Shanghai Lily, China Doll, Megan, and Poppy Smith, women forced to live by their wits and their bodies; the film dramatising their progressive decline into sexual degradation as a forbidden frisson of delight for the evil men in the narrative and for the audiences in the cinema: Shanghai Express (Josef Von Sternberg, 1932), The Bitter Tea of General Yen (Frank Capra, 1932), China Seas (Tay Garnett, 1935), Shanghai Gesture (Josef Von Sternberg, 1941).
Mandalay (Michael Curtiz, 1934) falls in the middle of this cycle. It’s a Kay Francis vehicle in which she starts off as Tanya Bodoroff, a woman stuck in Rangoon who finds love with gunrunner Tony Evans (Ricardo Cortez). He’s going through financial difficulties and thinks nothing of selling her off to Nick (Warner Oland) where as the ‘hostess’ of his nightclub she becomes the notorious Spot White, who sells her favours for profit and who’s main mission is to make men pay with much more than their wallet. She finally escapes this life and becomes Marjorie Lang, a woman intent on redeeming herself and the alcoholic Dr. Gregory Burton (Lyle Talbot) by bringing medical relief into the fever country where only one in a hundred returns alive. Tony returns to claim her just as she’s getting close to the Doctor, but he only wants her as the ‘Spot White’ who will make him money. He’s s quickly disposed of, in the exact fashion he’d tried to trick the authorities with earlier, falling overboard after poisoning, and thus freeing her to properly redeem herself. It’s a camp classic.
The movie has a nonsense of a plot, all packed into 65 minutes and worth watching today mainly because of Michael Curtiz’ direction and Kay Francis’ star presence. The film has all the things I like about early Warners films: those lovely title sequences where stars are introduced as the characters they play (see above),, that quick pace of the narrative where worlds can be turned upside down in under 70 minutes, the wipes galloping through the action, here both vertical and horizontal, and the hardboiled dialogue.
In Kay Francis: A Passionate Life and Career (London: McFarland and Co., 2006), Lynn Kear and John Rossman write, ‘Just in time before the Production Code took effect, Warner Brothers released Mandalay. Yes, it’s another melodrama, but it gloried in its sordidness and is still great campy fun. Kay played a woman sold into white slavery by her bad-boy boyfriend, and virtually spat her lines – finally given the chance to play Poppy in Shangai Gesture, she unleashed an unforgettable performance as Spot White. It will always remain a popular Kay Francis film. One reviewer realized its appeal when it was released. ‘Make no mistake, you’ll like Kay Francis in her clothes, her rich, exotic lure, her drama, no matter how you quarrel with the over-wrought story. The camera presents some lovely pictures of Miss Francis’.
It certainly does. Some of the credit for that is, as I’ve previously demonstrated, due to Orry-Kelly. But much of the credit must go to Michael Curtiz. As you can see below, he affords her a great star entrance, with the camera clearly on a boat, dizzyingly dollying onto Kay wearing a louche wrap-around dress and framed by a parasol. It’s a visually exciting presentation of the star (see below).
The film also has a superb montage of Tanya’s transformation into Spot White, interestingly introduced by a few notes from a xylophone striking a generic oriental tune, with Kay encircled in the centre, wearing a different outfit each time, and shown in a different place with a different man, so we can chart how each step in her moral downfall is also a measure of her worldly success –an opportunity to delight the audience with her wickedness and her outfits (see below).
The influence of Shanghai Express, such a big hit for Dietrich and Von Sternberg just a few years earlier, is everywhere evident, particularly in the scene below: ‘So you’re Spot White’? ‘Yes, is it overwhelming you’?…
Mandalay also has one great song (see below), which in typical cheap Warners fashion, the film uses over and over again, but here intelligently, underlining character, situation and aspirations, and used first in relation to Tanya, then Spot White, and then Marjorie to mean slightly different things in each instance and for each character. It’s a lovely song, very well used, and affording Kay many opportunities to wear dazzling gowns:
‘I’ve so many dreams to be mended
When Tomorrow comes
So many cares to be ended
When tomorrow comes
I took the worst and made the best of it
Because I always hoped a new day would dawn
I struggled on.’
In Michael Curtiz: A Life, Alex K. Rode writes that, ‘after watching the pre-release cut in December, Jack Warner raved to Hal Wallis, ‘it’s a hell of a good women’s picture, in fact, it’s great!’
According to Rode, the film was considered so racy that, ‘Warners would be denied a reissue certificate for Mandalay in 1936, as Breen wrote to Jack Warner,’This picture also has the basic Code violation of presenting the heroine as an immoral woman’.
The film raises once again the perennial question regarding Curtiz´s films: Everything looks and moves great. But to what end? Yet the film is 85 years old and we´re still watching. It´s still offering us pleasures that we think of as cheap because they´re ‘merely´visual, decorative. It´s a film of pure form, including its characterisations: that´s partly why it works as camp, these places and people are ironised exaggerations of fantasy ideals. They´re ideologically loaded and make one ideologically aware. I wish I´d seen a transvestite ´do´Spot White in a nightclub in 1935, the jailhouse of fantasies, social and personal that would have been exposed!
Kennington Talkies presents at the Cinema Museum is currently screening a cycle of her fims.

DINAH LIDDELL is a 16 year old PATIENT in the PSYCHIATRIC WARD. She has been diagnosed with SELECTIVE MUTISM, ANXIETY and OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER and looks a lot like Hayley McFarland.
MAYBE THEY’RE HIDING
Dinah often felt like a mouse in a family full of lions. It was as if her mother and brother had been painted in full color while Dinah was drawn in black and white. When her father was alive, it’d been much easier-he’d shared the same meek demeanor and love of music as her. He was the one who’d noticed her affinity for the piano and enrolled her in lessons. Dinah lived for these lessons. Playing the piano came easily to her; nothing pleased her more than learning a new song or getting new sheet music. Her teachers were impressed by her skill, even going so far as too call her a prodigy. However, Michael Liddell died in an automobile accident when she was eight, leaving Dinah alone among the wolves-that is, her mother. Tanya Liddell was a go-getter and a barrier breaker, and she expected her children to be the same. She had plans for Dinah. Before she knew it, Dinah was being entered into piano competitions and being forced to play in front of any agent or at any event that would have her. The more competitions she won and the more people who noticed her, the happier her mother was.
WE HOPE THEY ARE PLAYING A GAME
The only problem was, Dinah didn’t want to do any of it. She’d never liked being in the spotlight and now her mother had it on her constantly. Arguing with her mother did no good. The answer was always the same. ‘I’m only doing what’s best for you.’ Eventually, Dinah stopped protesting. However, the constant stress of her mother’s expectations and attention she didn’t want began to have a negative effect on Dinah. She’d always been finicky and timid, obsessed with keeping things clean and perfect but the stress of her life only made them worse. Her mother and brother often made fun of her quirks. But as Dinah got older the quirks became less cute and more concerning. Her mother thought it was adorable when an eight-year-old had to play all her scales and arpeggios when she made a mistake on a piano piece, or insisted on brushing her hair for exactly hundred strokes. It was less cute when a fifteen-year-old did it. Embarrassed, Dinah began to draw further into herself, often refusing to leave the house or even talk. It was as she was afraid of the effects
BUT THIS IS REALLY HAPPENING
However, her mother continued to enter her in competitions and present her at concerts, although her performances were beginning to suffer. And the more mistakes onstage she made onstage, the more she embarrassed she was, and the more mistakes happened. It was a cycle, but not a sustainable one. When the time came for her next concert Dinah broke completely. She locked herself in the dressing room and refused to leave, even when someone assured her that she wouldn’t have to perform that night. Even her mother couldn’t ignore an outburst like that. Dinah was sent to Brielle as soon as possible, in the hopes that they could fix what her mother couldn’t. She stayed there for almost a year, until finally her mom pulled her out against medical advice. Surely a year had been enough for Dinah to get a grip? So Dinah tried, she really did. She took her meds. She fought against her compulsions and tried to be a normal girl, catching up the things she missed-school dances and driving lessons. She even managed to perform in front of a crowd at her mother’s Christmas party. But it didn’t last. During a driving lesson, she hit a tree. No one was hurt, but it was enough to spend Dinah spiraling. She knew it had been her fault. She hadn’t done her rituals, she’d let everything go and so she’d hit a tree. Dinah fell back into her old habits and she fell hard. Fearing another public breakdown, Tanya sent her back to Brielle. It had helped once; and perhaps it could help again.
Connections: None
Ufortunately, Dinah is UNAVAILABLE!
