this is incidentally what most Touhou but Fucked Up!! works get wrong. touhou IS fucked up, naturally, but not in the way you think. living in gensokyo isn't a constant battle, your neighbors aren't having to always ward their houses in fear of being violently dragged away in the night. the old gensokyo was like that, for certain, but it is not now. you might hear about one person disappearing a month. you're very, very rarely going to find a body.
you know that the youkai don't come to the human village. you have no idea why not- the shrine maiden isn't very good at getting rid of them (nor is her friend, nor is the other one on the mountain). you can't just ask them, that would be inconceivable. but there are whispers that the village's safety was created by the youkai even youkai know nothing about. what could she possibly want with it? what are her plans for the humans?
there's a reporter girl handing out newspapers. the newspapers are written in an odd script. you can understand it, but it's unfamiliar nonetheless. the newsgirl's got a normal haircut and wears usual, if fashionable, clothing, but she's got bright red eyes. it could just be the magic in the air- there's that kid from the motoori family with the bright orange ones, for example- but it makes you worry. the articles all have a suspiciously pro-youkai bent, except for the ones about tanuki.
you and your neighbors go down to the pub. you've heard it's a good one, but you can't remember going there, even though your wife tells you you went by a week ago. there's a loudmouthed little girl with a big hat back in the kitchen drinking. that can't be healthy for her, can it? if she's human. if not, does the bartender know?
your neighbors start chatting. one of them talks about leaving gensokyo, waves a newspaper about the outside world around. you nod hesitantly. you've considered doing that yourself, but your wife doesn't want to go; the books she's been borrowing have been talking about great fire and poisonous dust in a land whose name you can't pronounce. it sounds western. she says that it might be nearby, past the barrier. you can't really know, since weather is the only thing that crosses it naturally. you've dismissed her concerns, but she keeps talking about earthquakes and tidal waves. you'd like to at least take a peek, though, yourself.
your other neighbor loudly shoots down the idea. he's been to the barrier himself, he says. or so he thinks. he walked past the hakurei shrine one day, during a festival, and beyond the pond in the back with that big old turtle. there was a path leading into the woods, and he started walking down it. he walked for a long time, but he noticed eventually that the scenery wasn't changing, that the trees all looked the same. he turned around and he was back at the pond again.
a third neighbor pipes up, quietly. he says that he's actually met an outsider before. not the teenager who flies, but a normal one. he's a metalworker, you see, so he's often on the lookout for new sources of scrap. he takes his guard dog with him along the river sometimes, past the miasma-filled forest and to the hill that's covered with spider lilies in the spring. he finds metal there, and glass. there's a third material that a lot of the things he finds are made of, moldable like metal, but when he tries to put it in a crucible it burns away, so he's stopped collecting it. he always feels like he's being watched, but he never sees any youkai.
the outsider he met had told him he didn't have any "reception", so the map he had didn't work. the outsider had shown your neighbor a small rectangle of glass and metal, illuminated in the center, with a blank grid shown on it. there were some words at the top and bottom of the grid, but they didn't seem to be helping him. the outsider had asked your neighbor for a map, but your neighbor had said- truthfully- that no one knows their way around gensokyo, and had offered to guide him back to the village. the outsider had hemmed and hawed for a bit, and asked what the village was like; when he heard, he refused, and said he'd find his own way back. your neighbor had entreated him and warned him about youkai in the area, but he'd laughed it off, and the neighbor had gone on, collecting metal, after they went their separate ways.
when the neighbor was on his way back to the village, he saw some torn-up grass and the small rectangle lying on the ground, but no blood or any other signs of a struggle. his dog had growled at the rectangle, but he had picked it up and brought it home. he pulls it out of his haori. the glass is cracked, and it won't light up, he says. you stare at it for a bit, then ask how the outsider got there, anyway. the first neighbor chimes in again, telling you that the area over there is full of outside objects- the barrier must be thin there. that's where he plans to make his way out.
the second neighbor snorts incredulously. the bartender pours you another drink. she has an adorable smile, but she seems so nervous, and you feel a little bad for her. it would be lovely if girls like her didn't have to live in fear of what lives outside the village walls.
you wake up the next day with no memory of the night before. you wrap an ofuda your wife got from the moriya shrine to your fishing rod and head out to work. that night, your wife tells you that one of your neighbors didn't come back from work. you hope someone finds him soon.
THAT is how Touhou is Touhou but Fucked Up.

Silver Lining

Synopsis: It had been thousands of years since that battle that killed Shirou and granted him immortality; the love of his life died in that battle. However, a miracle happened shortly after he awoke, but he was not there to witness it, and her certainly did not learn about it until Michiru arrived in Anima City.

Thousands of years ago, a war between beastmen and humans emerged in a small city where they once had peace, but suddenly fear and anger emerged in the humans. Caught in the fray of violence were a young Wolf and her husband; they had been separated in the chaos, and the young wolf had died hours before her husband; he soon was killed after seeing her body 20 feet away. He was shot with an arrow straight through his neck, while his wife was shot in the heart.
A phenomenon occurred, the blood of the entire village had gifted both with immortality, but only the husband woke; thinking she was still dead, he moved her to where she would have wanted to be in her last moments. She never wanted to be buried right after death. She wanted to spend at least a day in her bed before she was buried, allowing her body the last comforts of life before she moved on.
By the time the wife awoke, she, like her husband, was bewildered, finding herself with new powers and a star-shaped scar on her chest. She looked around the room, expecting to find her husband nursing her back to health, but all she could see was an empty room and hear nothing but the wind blowing through piles of corpses; now, by the time she had woken up, 10 years had passed, although faint she could pick up the smell of her husband, discovering that her smell had been heightened, she stood and embarked on a journey, that would not reunite her with her love until many centuries later . -✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-
Y/n sat on a boat with a mink and a very anxious tanuki, who seemed to be getting offended about being called a raccoon, Y/n could smell the human on her, but something was off since it wasn't leading anywhere. "ah, what did you say your name was again?" the smaller beastmen, still in beast form, addressed the paled skinned female with shoulder length H/c hair. Y/n did not want to reveal her identity to this girl because of her powers, but she had no other ideas. "My name is Y/n Ogami," The wolf huffed quietly and looked back out to the ocean, and the Tanuki finally shut up.
As the boat landed, Michiru disappeared into the festival, but Y/n stayed by the docks. She was scared. She hadn't been around this many beastmen in a very long time, but her anxiety lessened when she was told that no humans aside from Alan Sylvasta were present in the city. Soon a loud boom was heard from the festival, putting Y/n on alert as she began to sniff the air around her, looking for the origin of the sound. Y/n rushed off, seeing a collapsed billboard accompanied by a confused and scared crowd.
Y/n started running around calming people down, worried for the place she wished to call home, where she wanted to base the operations of her search. Over the centuries, Y/n had never stopped looking for her husband, with the slight hope in her heart that he was blessed with the same miracle she was; after all, how else did she end up in the one place she wanted to rest in after death. Although the chaotic evening had delayed her search, she would never run out of time to find him if he was still alive.
-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-
After spending the night with the mink who owned the boat, she headed straight for the Mayor, hoping to gain an audience with her and the Mayor would have information about her husband. She had the luck of filling out a citizenship form before arriving. Unfortunately, she still had to watch others fighting over petty crap in city hall. They were already fighting when she came, but she was so distracted that she didn't notice the familiar scent leaving the building.
As she enters the Mayor's office, guided by a security officer, she looks around curiously before stopping a small distance from the desk. "Uh…" While Y/n was looking for the words to greet herself, the Mayor turned to look at her and smiled softly. "You must be the beastmen who arrived during the festival last night; such a terrible incident must have dampened your mood; how can I help you?" Y/ smiles softly; unlike her husband, she had become shyer over time. Although just as serious as he was, she still had trouble talking to new people.
"I'm looking for my husband, I lost him a long time ago, and I was wondering if you would have any information on him? His name is Shirou Ogami" Mayor Rose lifted an eyebrow in surprise, so this was Shirous infamous wife that he refused to talk about. "Although I cannot give you much, I would suggest heading to the Beast Co-op until you can find a place to settle down; the people there are wonderful and full of surprises; I hope this aids in your search," Y/n smiles brightly, although it wasn't much it was a start.
Wandering through the city, Y/n buys some pastries as she heads toward her new destination and soon-to-be temporary home. The smell of food always made her hungry, and considering the poor girl hadn't had a proper meal in about a month, she thought it would be best to treat herself to finding a somewhat reliable lead to finding her husband.
Y/n walks up to the lovely building, reading beastmen co-op in finely printed letters, and enters, immediately being greeted by a happy couple who had received word of her arrival; Y/n was surprised at how fast word spread to people if it concerned the Mayor or new beastmen. The nice woman, Melissa, offered her a nice meal while they waited for the other two residents to show up, wanting to ensure there would be no conflicts in sleeping arrangements. Y/n smiled up at Melissa and asked if she could find a place to read, and Melissa took her to a room filled with books, an office that, when Y/n entered, smelled incredibly familiar, like she had encountered the scent before.
-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-✧-✦-
Hours had passed, and Y/n had fallen asleep sitting next to a bookshelf, a book lying open in her lap and her head leaning off to the side. The door to the office opened, and in walked a tall man with white hair, a black collar, and a small crow on his shoulder. Adjusting his gloves and removing his coat before noticing a new smell in his office. Melissa did say they had a new resident. He looked around and saw a more petite figure, about two inches shorter than she was, sleeping with a book. The male placed his coat on his chair and walked up the steps to the second-level shelves.
As the male approached the sleeping figure, her physical appearance shocked him. She looked a lot like his wife, with a modern clothing taste. He gently picked up the female, causing her slumbered state to stir, the book hitting the floor quite loudly. She stretched her arms before rubbing her eyes and squinting at the person holding her above the ground. Unable to identify who was holding her, she sniffed before jumping out of the man's arms, tears forming in her eyes.
Shirou was really confused; why was this woman crying at the sight of him, and why did she look so shocked by his scent, Y/n squats to the ground and started rubbing her eyes and calming herself down. She hiccups and rubs her cheeks before standing back up and walking up to Shirou, placing her forehead against his chest, giggling softly, "I found you…" although quiet, it was picked up by Shirou's ears, confused he gently grabs her shoulders and pulls her away from his chest to get a good look at her.
Surprised by his reaction, Y/n tilted her head slightly to the right, curious about what he was doing. The taller male inspected her face; of course, he hadn't recognized her right away, it had been hundreds of years, and at the time, they didn't have the technology to produce photos. "Shirou???" Y/n was concerned about her husband's failure to recognize her. Shirous eyes went wide when she said his name. That's what made the whole thing click in his memory.
Shirou hugged her tight and buried his face in her hair. "How?" his voice was quiet as she hugged back. "I was granted the same things you were… it took me so long to find you…" Melissa opened the office door to check up on Y/n before noticing the two in a loving hug before closing the door quietly to leave them be. The two pulled apart and placed their foreheads against each other "You know, it was courageous of the mayor to not tell me you live here" Y/n smiled up at Shirou as he rolled his eyes and picked her up, heading towards his room so he and his wife couple could get their rest "Mayor Rose has her ways, maybe she wished for you to be surprised."
Placing Y/n down in the bed, he sat down next to her and introduced her to Kuro as they caught up on hundreds of years apart from each other, and for once, Shirou found a silver lining to being the silver wolf, that being his wife turned out to be alive and that she's been looking for him all these years. That night they fell asleep next to each other for the first time in centuries, reunited.
End.

Sulemio Week 2024 Day 6: Proposal
(If you would rather read this on AO3, you can do so here!)
Miorine stared at the bright lights of the fair. Sure, she had been to school festivals during her time at Asticassa those few years ago and some professional conventions for work, but nothing like this.
Sickly sweet smells from nearby food stalls flooded the air. Upbeat, cheerful music drifted around and mixed with the smells. The sky had been stained orange and purple from the setting sun.
She felt a bit guilty that they weren't able to go until later in the evening, but Miorine had to begrudgingly go to work. Not only that, she had been trying to prepare something as well.
Said thing she had been preparing sat heavy in her jacket’s pocket. Her hand pressed the box against her thigh just to reassure herself that it was there. She took a deep breath to calm herself.
“C’mon, Miorine!” Suletta called out. She leaned against her cane while waving a hand high above her head. “I wanna try some of the games!”
Miorine didn't even notice Suletta had gotten ahead of her. She laughed lightly from the child-like display, but that was something she loved about Suletta. She never took anything too seriously unless it involved Miorine herself.
Miorine half jogged to catch up to Suletta who was already eyeing up the game booths that were lined up on either side of them. One showed a classic game of bottles stacked atop each other. Another displayed a contraption with holes in it that spun with people throwing lightweight balls at them.
Suletta suddenly stopped in front of one of the booths. Plush animals were lined up in a row, and a toy gun that shot corks sat on the counter across from them. Suletta dug into her pocket and handed a few bills to the person running the game.
As she picked up the fake weapon and tucked it against her shoulder, she grinned at Miorine.
“Which one do you like?”
Miorine crossed her arms and looked at each toy. A standard teddy bear stared back at her with little, beady eyes. Next to that sat a small white cat. But she soon noticed the one on the end- a tanuki-like plush with a fluffy tail that swayed behind it off the shelf. She kind of thought it looked like Suletta. She couldn't help but chuckle to herself.
“That one.” Miorine pointed at it.
Suletta nodded and then pressed her cheek against the stock. Her eyes seemed to focus and her breathing slowed. With a squeeze, she pulled the trigger.
The cork flew out with a comedic sounding pop. It hit the plush tanuki square in the chest. Miorine held her breath until it wobbled then finally fell.
“Good shot, Suletta!” Miorine congratulated her.
Suletta let out an embarrassed chuckle before the man behind the counter held out the plush to her. She accepted it with a thank you and a small bow of her head. Instead of tucking it under her arm, she held it out towards Miorine.
“For you.”
Miorine knew she was going for the plush for her, but it didn't stop the slight blush from rushing to her cheeks. She took the stuffed animal from Suletta’s hands.
Its fake fur felt soft and warm from the lights that previously illuminated it. She hugged it close to her chest.
“Thanks. I love it.” A glowing grin pulled on her lips. It made Suletta smile back at her. Her heart skipped a beat, and she cleared her throat to hide it. “What do you want to do next?”
Suletta quickly checked her phone for the time then bounced a bit on her toes.
“It's almost time for the fireworks!” she said. She turned and pointed towards the towering ferris wheel. “And I wanted to try and watch them from there.”
Miorine looked up at the slowly spinning ride. Its lights flashed all the colors of the rainbows down the spokes. She hummed and scratched at her jaw. It wasn't until she had a sudden realization did she nod.
“That sounds amazing. Let's do it.”
Suletta’s ecstatic smile widened. She leaned hard against her cane so she could turn towards the wheel.
“Then let's hurry before the line gets too long!”
Miorine did her best to keep a pace that would be comfortable for Suletta. Despite the walking aid, she managed to keep up and even surpass her a few times. She chalked it up to her excitement.
Thankfully, it looked like they showed up just in time as the line was nearly nonexistent. Suletta let out a triumphant cheer before she walked between the barricades to get in line.
Once they got up front, the people running the attraction gladly held open the door to the car as Miorine helped Suletta step inside. Before Miorine could follow after, Suletta swooped in and planted a kiss to her cheek.
“Thank you,” she hummed.
Miorine’s smile softened. She felt her body warm with love that she couldn't hide. She gave a small hum herself then stepped inside. She sat down on the seat next to Suletta.
Miorine slipped her arm around Suletta’s and rested her head against her shoulder. She carefully put the stuffed tanuki on the bench next to her once the car swayed and jerked as it rose into the sky.
The car of the ferris wheel gently rocked back and forth from the wind and general movement of the wheel itself. Miorine soon buried her free hand deep in her jacket's pocket as she waited for it to stop. Her fingers clutched the small box there.
This is it. This is perfect, she thought to herself.
The car slowly came to a halt near the top of the wheel. Miorine's fingers gripped the box tighter. She shifted uncomfortably in her seat. As she opened her mouth to speak, fireworks soon interrupted her as they erupted in the sky a bit away.
“Miorine, look!” Suletta's eyes widened with wonder. “It's beautiful.”
Flashes of color lit up her face and made all the colors imaginable sparkle and dance in her eyes. The sight stole Miorine's breath away. She didn't care about the fireworks one bit. She only kept her eyes on the more beautiful sight in front of her.
“Yeah,” she replied with a dreamy sigh. “Sure is.”
She fidgeted with the box a moment longer before she loudly cleared her throat to get Suletta's attention.
Suletta finally pulled her eyes from the window and raised an eyebrow. When she opened her mouth to say something, Miorine raised a hand to stop her. She listened and closed her mouth, waiting patiently.
“We've been together for some time now, Suletta,” Miorine started. “And there's something I've been meaning to say for some time now.”
She gripped the box in her fist and pulled it free from her pocket. She slowly stood up in the small space so as not to rock it too much. Her mouth went dry from nerves, but she swallowed it away.
“Suletta Mercury,” Miorine knelt down on one knee. She presented the ring box and opened it towards Suletta. “Will you marry me?”
Suletta stared at the small box in Miorine's hands, and her mouth fell open slightly from surprise. The lights from the continued fireworks bounced off the small jewel embedded in the ring and tossed extra colors against the walls and floor.
“Miorine,” Suletta stuttered. “We were already planning on getting married. You didn't need to-”
“But I want to do this, Suletta,” Miorine cut her off. She licked her lower lip to fight back the nerves that almost made her hands shake. “I want to make it truly official and not something that my father forced on me years ago. I'm doing this to show that this is something that I truly want.”
Miorine swallowed and then squared away her shoulders. Her eyes fully locked onto Suletta’s that time to show how serious she was.
“So again, Suletta Mercury, will you marry me?”
Suletta’s eyes softened. Her smile became so gentle that Miorine’s knees went weak. She thanked her lucky stars that she didn't fall over from it. The silence broke with another pop of fireworks and Suletta's answer.
“Yes, of course I'll marry you.”
Miorine felt sheer joy flood through her veins. She couldn't stop the smile from stretching across her face even if she wanted to. She carefully plucked the rung from the box and held a hand out to Suletta.
She gladly placed her hand in Miorine's palm. The warmth from her fingers traveled up her arm and settled into her chest. With a sense of finality, she slipped the ring onto Suletta's finger.
They both admired it in the dim light before Miorine looked up at Suletta from the floor. She finally let go of her hand to stand up and cup her face instead.
“I love you so much,” she whispered. Instead of waiting for an answer that time, she leaned down to eagerly press a kiss to her mouth.
Suletta smiled into it before returning the gesture. Her hands rested against Miorine's waist, and her thumbs rubbed small circles there. Miorine ran her fingers through the hair at the back of Suletta's neck.
Their moment was ruined when the wheel jolted back to life and made the car suddenly sway. Miorine stumbled slightly, but Suletta had wrapped her arms around Miorine's waist to keep her from falling.
“Don't worry. I got you.” She looked up at her with her usual smile. Miorine couldn't help but give one in return. She brushed a thumb against her cheek.
“I know you do, my love.” Miorine pressed one more kiss to her forehead. “And I'll be there for you, always.”

Before his name was Seonghwa, he was called Dal. He was the great spirit of the moon— the spirit of self sacrifice. So what could a small little tanuki spirit possibly teach him? The answer, it turns out, was everything.
Another mythology au drawing, this time in the Joseon period! Seonghwa used to go by Dal, because he wasn’t very creative with names when he first tried a human form. Hongjoong found him dancing at a Chuseok festival, and the two were inseparable for thousands of years after that. They explored humanity and all that it gave, playing pranks and trying new things. They were the best of friends— a slightly bitter but playful tanuki leading his naive and joyful friend all across the country. Everything was so happy until the imperial era.
