Mt. Daraitan

​Say Hello to my mother mountain, Mt. Daraitan.

I've been fascinated as to how does it feel when you reached the summit of a specific mountain. I've been trying some sort of mini hiking for quite some time but I felt like reaching the summit was still different. I tried going down to Bumok-od falls in Sagada or go up to My. Tapyas in Coron but I still wanted to try reaching summits. So when my friends planed this ahon to Mt. Daraitan, I quickly confirmed.

Located at Brgy. Daraitan in Tanay, we rented a private van to and from the jump-off. If you want to chase sunrise and sea of clouds, I suggest that you do the same since public vehicle to Brgy. Daraitan in the wee hours is quite difficult.  Plus, you will be very tired after the climb, I SWEAR. It took us 2 hours from Pasig to jump-off.

Parking available in the area.

From the parking, we walk to the little bridge and rode a trike that brought us to the Brgy. Hall.

Here's how you can get there via Private car:

-Make your way to the Tanay-Infanta Road via the Tanay-Sampaloc Road or Marcos Highway/Marilaque-Drive along the Tanay-Infanta Road and take a left turn on the Makaira-Daraitan dirt road with a sign that leads to Mt. Daraitan-Follow the road until you reach the river crossing and wooden bridge.-You need to pay P20 for motorcycle or P50 per car to cross the bridge.-The last stretch going to Kuta Bungliw is not accessible to motorcycles or cars. You can park your vehicles in one of the houses in the poblacion (secure parking is available for P20/motorcycles per day or P100 for cars if overnight)-From Brgy. Hall to Kuta Bungliw jump off/Irid, ride trike (P25/person) or walk for 25-30 mins. You can also bring mountain bikes but you will have to push your bikes up in some sections-Travel time is roughly 2 to 3 hours depending on the traffic and your pace.

Via Public tanspo:

From EDSA-Shaw

-Take a jeep from EDSA-Shaw to Tanay, Rizal (1.5 – 2 hrs; P50)

-Get off at Tanay Public market and go to jeepney terminal; Take a jeep to Sampaloc, Tanay (30 mins)

-Take a tricycle or hire a habal-habal to Brgy. Daraitan (P100/person; 30-45 mins)

-When you arrive at Daraitan River, cross the bridge to the other side and take a trike (P10/person – 5 mins) to the Daraitan Barangay hall

-Allot 3-4 hours travel time because of stops and delays

From Cubao:

-From Cubao Aurora Blvd, ride a jeep to Cogeo Gate 2 (P24) First trip is 5:30 am.

-At the end of the ride, walk to the intersection, turn right to the road up to reach Sampaloc Tanay jeep terminal (that’s after the Wet Market). First trip is 5:30am.

-Ride a jeep (P65) to Sampaloc. From Sampaloc, walk past the intersection towards Shell gas station.

-Across Shell is the Daraitan TODA trike & habal terminal (ride only w/ Daraitan TODA). Trike to Brgy hall is P300/trike/max 5 passengers. Habal habal is P100/habal/max 2 passengers.

Outfit:

Mt. Daraitan's difficulty is 4/9 but do not underestimate. Though it is a minor climb (feeling major sometimes), I still bear with the post climb bodyache for 3 days because I was heavier than usual. Outdoor clothes or dri-fit shirts will do.  Just wear light clothes, something that won't add additional weight since this is an ascend hike. I prefer wearing leggings coz the trail is muddy. Wear swimwear under your trekking clothes if you are lucky enough and could swim in Tinipak River. For your happy feet, close shoes will always be the best option. Sandals with good traction is another. Don't try to wear slippers while hiking. Bring extra set of cleaned clothes. You can leave them in the Brgy. Hall or kay Manang along the bridge for no additional charge. Although, using the comfort room for other needs and shower charges around P5-P20.

What to bring:

-Camera and smartphone-Drinking water (Atleast 2 liters) -Light trail snacks though there are mini sari-sari store at the foot of the mountain and at the pre-summit which cost a little more. (Hello, they bringing it up) -Extra Money.- Poncho/Raincoat since it always rain in the summit.

Guide fee: P500/ 5pax

Normal hikers will start trek from the Brgy. Hall and traverse backtrail since this is shorter but more challenging. However, since I am a beginner and weighted heavier we took the other trail which is longer. You can reach the summit within 3-4 hours depending on your group's pace. To my case I got it for 4-5 hours. Unlimited breaks included.

The trail is difficult for first timers.

It is steep and muddy. I almost gave up. But the scenic view of the Sierra Madre mountains always pays off. Plus, there is a heart shape trail that you will see at the top of the summit. It's beautiful. The summit is covered with beautiful limestone rock formation. We didn't stay for a long time since its misty and almost raining. We needed to hurry back down since it will be more difficult. Nakakapagod Bes pero ivaaa!!

It is best to schedule you climb on weekdays since mountaineers and tourist flocked to the mountain on weekends and holidays.  

Aside from the beautiful Mt. Daraitan Summit, Tinipak river is another attraction. As I've seen in the photos it looks so majestic. Unfortunately, the river was close when we get there. Aside from that, I'm dead tired.  Traversing in trail 2 is challenging but fun. Its unending muddy slide in the wheat field.  Overall, I would love to give Mt. Daraitan a try. Maybe try the backtrail next time.
