The strap of Joel's bag slips from his shoulder, tugging at his arm as he reaches into the pocket of his coat. After the eight-hour flight and the rush from the airport, he wasn't sure if he'd remembered to take his phone off airplane mode, but the phone call answers one question. Or make that two questions, he thinks as he catches a glimpse of the name at the top of the screen.

Swinging his carry-on back over his shoulder, he changes the hand that is on the suitcase and adjusts the phone before tapping the accept button. "Hey, I--" Someone walking the opposite way along the sidewalk has to sidestep his bags, and he waves apologetically before continuing to the front of the building. "Sorry. Hey! Happy almost New Year. Or... happy New Year's Eve? I guess?" Chuckling, Joel glances up to make sure he has the right address. All at once, the anticipation rises to the surface, but he would hate to ruin the surprise now after having put so much time into planning the trip. "So... three days, huh?"

Joel's voice coming over the line instantly lifts his spirits, and he smiles in amusement as he listens to his greeting. It's a bit chaotic, but it's still the best thing Tanner has heard since the last time they spoke. "Nobody wishes anyone either of those things, J. It's just happy New Year starting at like, Christmas." He leans his head back against the couch, still smiling as he stares up at the ceiling. "And hey. What's it like in the future? Do we have flying cars yet?" Tanner wonders who Joel rang in the New Year with. Whoever it was must be gone now, because the background is quiet on his end. "Three days," he agrees, feeling the ache of loneliness once more. "I wish you were here now. Kissing your picture at midnight isn't going to be the same," he jokes half-heartedly.
