For whatever reason, one of my favourite things is using a character's hair as a means of characterization and/or symbolizing character development. And I just wanna babble about two super specific instances of how I'm using it in my own writing and character design. More below, so I don't clog up any dashes with my random babbling! Also, this is purely off the top of my head, so things may change or be a little skewed.

Nezuko Kamado - Sunlit Blossoms

Yep! Nezuko is one of them! It's honestly gonna be so much more prevalent when we get to Hashira Training, but I definitely wanna talk about how I use Nezuko's hair to symbolize a lot in her story.

First, we have the initial haircut in chapter 6 of Sunlit Blossoms. When Nezuko goes from hip length hair to just brushing her shoulders. To me, this symbolizes quite a bit when I think of how I wrote this story. Nezuko made this choice for practicality's sake, but also as a reminder of her promise to turn Tanjirou back into a human and kill Kibutsuji. While the length varies a little, her hair doesn't go past her shoulders for most of the story afterwards. She carefully maintains that length limit. She doesn't give it up. Just like she's not giving up her fight. In my head, this haircut is a symbol of Nezuko giving up her past, her childhood, her carefree life and the innocence she had with it.

Then we get to the red streak she gets in Mount Natagumo. This is, as many have guessed, because of her Sun Breathing. It's to show she's taken the biggest first step in truly mastering the technique. To joining Tanjirou, their father, and their paternal ancestors in a long line of Sun Breathers. And every step she takes in learning or using something Yoriichi once did? It expands. It never covers her entire head(which could be a symbol of how, much like Tanjirou, she will never truly master Sun Breathing the way Yoriichi or even her father did), but it keeps expanding until she masters all the techniques she needs to have the best chance humanly possible.

Now, coming back to the length. Nezuko's hair does grow past her shoulders during her post-Entertainment District Arc coma, and she doesn't think to cut it again until after she completes Himejima's section of Hashira Training. During this time, Nezuko has a bit more of a chance to just be a teenage girl. She can relax and act like she's fourteen years old, rather than like a hardened soldier. She's allowed to have back just a little bit of her child-like innocence, even if it's brief.

Then, after that, she cuts her hair one more time before the final battle. The shortest she ever cuts it. And not only that, she leaves behind her ribbon after this last haircut. I haven't sorted out the specific symbolism for this. It's meant to be significant, though. Probably symbolizes Nezuko going from relaxed and a little carefree to full on Battle Mode.

Cynder - LoS Human!AU

Yeah, this one struck me mid-sketch. But it came to me, slapped me in the face, and inspired the whole post. Thanks, random story idea!

So, if you've seen my Human!Cynder design, you know I tend to design her with her hair in a specific style. Six dutch braids that gather into one large braid in the back, the six braid referencing her horns in her dragon design. But I have some ideas now!

So, let's begin at... well... A New Beginning! AKA when Cynder is the BBEG. Not only do I plan to have her in armour, I plan for her hair to be fully slicked back and tied back tight enough to be fit for a dance recital(speaking from experience. If you didn't look ten years younger in the recital hairstyle, ya weren't doing it right!/hj). It's meant to represent just how restrained she is. How strict her life has been since her corruption.

Then, after the battle in Convexity, her hair will be loose. At first, it's completely loose. Hair is untied, she's been given the freedom to let it hang in her face. Just like how she now has the space and freedom to relax and not worry about the war. In the post-credit scene, her hair would be in a loose braid. In that same scene, she and Spyro share the sentiment of having a bad feeling despite the fact all seems calm.

Then we go to The Eternal Night. Here, Cynder's going to have the hairstyle I came up with in the first stages of her design. The braids. They're maybe a little messy, definitely not as smooth as her Queen of Conquer look, but much tighter than her uncorrupted ANB looks. At least when she leaves the Temple to try and discover her own identity and destiny. After she gets captured, she looks a lot smoother when facing Gaul. Maybe her look got cleaned up before being brought to him. As a way to show she's more trapped now. It loosens again when she tries to land a hit on Gaul, then the remainder of TEN happens.

In Dawn of the Dragon, her look obviously doesn't change much. Not until the fight with Malefor. Either she loses the hair tie in the fight, or the loose end of her big braid gets hacked off in the fight, but Cynder goes from braid to ponytail at the tail end of that fight. Pun not intended. She's being freed more the closer she and Spyro get to winning.

And then, after Spyro restores the world? In that ending where they're playing in what seems to be Avalar? Except for the Dutch braids, her hair is completely loose again. She's free. She's able to be herself.

hellooo it's your secret santa again <3!! how was your weekend? i hope it was great! thank you for answering with your opinion about tomioka, it was very cool and interesting to read i totally agree with you! his arc was such a surprise but a really good one. to see that he really wasn't like the "chosen one" like the other hashiras and was really lucky to have passed the test of becoming a demon hunter due to his friend sacrifice made him even more interesting as a character. and to see that he always felt guilty and didn't deserve to be on the water hashira place.. it's so genuine like we see the true tomioka on those chapters and at the same time it's so sad... but he really did a great job through the path and truly deserve that title of hashira! his fight with tanjirou with akaza in the end of the manga was so awesome i can't wait to see that animated! ohh you like naruto! that's cool! i still haven't watched the whole anime but sasuke is so 😍 i really get you! as for the yu yu hakusho i heard about it but never watched it, it seems pretty awesome! could you tell me about more of it marilyn? 👀 wish you a good and enjoyable week!

lol i may go on and on when discussing my favourite characters it might not be engaging to ppl too much but i am glad to hear that you found my opinions interesting XD you have said you are also a fan of giyuu and hearing that makes me happy, i love interacting with others with similar interests💙

i absolutely agree that giyuu deserved to be the water hashira despite his insecurity and he proved to be worthy of that title: he created his own form, slays demons with grace, and despite nezuko being a demon he made the judgement to keep her alive to even vouch for her with his life. his fight with tanjiro against akaza is fantastic - i am excited for it to get animated!! akaza is definitely my second favourite character after giyuu~ 💜 he has such a well-written backstory and just grabs my heartstrings in the way giyuu's does...🥺

naruto is such a long anime i followed it thoughout my childhood up to my high school years haha but it was worth it (the fillers not so much lol)!! and sasuke himself is such a dynamic character but also corrupt... he may be an acquired taste for some and may take some time to like... XD

yu yu hakusho is such a great anime i highly recommend it. if you heard of hunter x hunter it is created by the same author/ artist. it is about a juvenile protagonist, yusuke, who has to prove himself worthy of coming back to life (because he was dead since his first appearance lol) his death was unnecessary, but it was by a good act so he was granted a second chance at life mainly cuz the afterlife didn't know what to do with him at first xD he's recruited to serve the afterlife ruler by investigating supernatural phenomena in the world of the living that have connections to the underworld, a.k.a "demons" but not in the way of kny lol basically hell on earth and yusuke is the guy to fight off and send demons back to hell. this is just the gist of it but if you like action-packed animes this is full of it!

i dont think i ever planned on genuinely writing it but also talking about it was the highlight of my week uhhh anw i need to summarize it dont i

so you know how tanjirou gets turned into a demon by muzan for the last fight of the manga? yeah so in the au he gets hit by something during the tamayo fight that gives him muzan's blood way earlier so the plot is just him spiraling a bunch and coping with the idea he's turning into a demon

ok ok ok ok so one of tanjirou's fears is losing control of himself and hurting people he loves, right?? And i imagine he takes great pains to at the very least keep himself in working order at first so he's able to do that.

But after a few months of little to no sleep, wearing himself out with demon fights, and overall stress and worry; his hands start to shake. Just a little tremor, nothing too drastic, just enough to put an extra squiggle at the end of his words when he writes. It's nothing major, and yet it terrifies him because he can't will it to stop. He can't control it, and if he cant control something as small as a tremor, then what about the bigger stuff??

(I also think a lot about him getting small anxiety tics, just like a flick of his wrist or the tensing of a muscle, and i think THAT would make him fucking shut down for a few days, just completely isolating himself because he thinks it's starting, he's turning into a demon and he won't be able to control his demon urges anymore.)

god bc that only strengthens his idea that he wont be able to control himself when he eventually snaps but he's just going to pass it off as if its nothing and repress it until his entire body is shaking instead of just his hands</3

Happy tanjirou corruption arc Tuesday <3

Ok so you know how when you feel super guilty or anxious, your stomach starts to hurt?? What if tanjirou spends months just barely able to keep food down, so sick of himself and what he's becoming that he can barely fall asleep, weak and hurting, the whole shebang. (He never complains because he thinks he deserves it, which y'know. Makes it worse.)

And then one day he notices that he's...not feeling as sick anymore. And he's able to eat more, and doesn't stay awake as long as usual. And imagine him trying to figure out why, and coming to the conclusion that he doesn't feel guilty anymore and that he's even more of a monster than he thought

(BONUS points if this coincides with the nightmares of him killing his family starting, so the only time he feels sick anymore is when he wakes up from one; which makes the whole thing worse because he's relieved that he can still feel guilt, and then he feels WORSE for feeling relieved after just seeing his family die by his hand)

back a while ago i sent you an ask on like what you thought would happen if tanjirou hurts someone and you said that eventually he gets numb to the point where a voice in his head is telling him that its necessary. yeah. so. the less guilty he feels the louder that voice in his head gets until its the only thing he can hear and damn if he isnt clinging to that voice desperately

If tanjirou would just TALK about his issues everything would be fine but NOOO he has eldest daughter syndrome and thinks he needs to carry everyone on his back through a snowstorm uphill both ways with two broken legs

i sincerely think i have an issue with taking characters with eldest daughter syndrome and just making them worse

so i think a lot abt what demons would think of au tanjirou and how they'd react n stuff and i think there's three main reactions that come w finding out that "oh yea this demon slayer is a demon kinda"

1. pure glee. there's taunting and insults and a familiarity in their voice that makes tanjirou want to make them suffer before the final blow. they act like they know him, like they have something in common (mostly to rile tan up and make him sloppy, it has the opposite effect), and it makes tanjirou sick to his stomach for days after.

2. fear. yes, this human is turning into a demon, but, do you smell that?? that's muzan's blood, this is one of muzan's kids, probably working for him undercover in the ds corps. they don't stand a chance against him (these are the ones tanjirou likes, especially at first. seeing the visible terror on their faces, the shaky way they plea and bargain, it makes him feel alive in a way nothing else rly does anymore).

3. confusion. these are the easiest ones to deal with. tanjirou will let them draw blood and then strike when they hesitate. these ones don't usually get the opportunity to speak.

i just...theres so much potential there. i think oh man, nail in the coffin, if the spider kid said smthn abt tanjirou joining them once he's fully turned, or offered to help speed up the process, i think tan would've snapped. like he was dealing w so so much already, and i think that'd be one fight he would take no pleasure in, only pain.

hhhhhhhhhhhh ok so. so. mentally i am pacing around in my head grinning like an idiot but. this is such a good explanation for this

so like at first its mainly the taunts and the confusion right? and then, after tanjirou snaps and kills akaza its mostly fear, and god if tanjirou doesn't revel in the demon's fear of him, at first he thinks of it as payback for his family but then its slowly starts to be because he himself likes it

I dont get manic episodes that often but when I do it's like theres this deep buzzing under my skin and i can't physically feel anything, so I think if that happened to tanjirou he'd at first think "oh fuck this must be what demon transformation feels like" and then immediately stop caring because holy shit he doesn't feel cold anymore!! he can do whatever the fuck he wants!!!

(The team finds him laying in the snow 50 yards away from camp passed out and shivering with the worlds worst undercut, but it's also the first time since the Whole Thing started that he's slept through the night)

oh dear i do not want to imagine what that undercut looks like
