OKAY they didn't exactly invent vtubing. That was probably Mario (Mario in Real-Time was a trade show thing in 1991).

But in 1997 they did do what was almost certainly the first instance of vtubing on TV, with the show Wheel 2000 (aka Wheel of Fortune 2000). This was a kids-focused spinoff of Wheel of Fortune that lasted for only one season.

It was similar to regular wheel of fortune, but with two major differences:

There was a "physical challenge" part: some Nickelodeon gameshow shit. You had to collect balls or climb shit or whatever. This was a bonus that got you extra letters or points.

Instead of Vanna White(/Susan Stafford) turning the letters, they had a much more vocal co-host: CYBERLUCY. She was a virtual character, who appeared on a big screen that replaced the traditional board with the spinning letters.

Cyberlucy was a completely virtual character, animated using 3D CGI and live mo-cap. Basically her actress was mic'd and wearing a headset with the live audio mix, so she could reply to the host and contestants and her voice and movements would appear in real time.

Her mocap and voice were provided by actress/host/reporter Tanika Ray, probably best known for being a correspondent on Extra and a host on HGTV'd since 2011.

Random Wheel of Fortune Rabbit Hole: She did a pilot in 2000 for a show called "Seacrest @ Night", staring Ryan Seacrest on his first TV show.

Ryan Seacrest is about to be the next host of Wheel of Fortune (show number... 3? maybe 4?) starting this September.

But then over there on the left is Heidi who does all the nasty crazy dangerous sh!t the shows insurance doesn’t allow @jaimiealexander to do herself. And Jaimie’s speech was the bomb.
