How big do you think Ancalagon the Black was meant? He's always described as the largest dragon to ever lived, but a lot of fan artists takes it to ludicrous extremes, seemingly taking the books flowery description that he crushed Tangorodrim beneath him in his fall, quite literally.

Personally I have always thought the image that description was meant to invoke was the smae as the Balrog, where Gandalf says he broke the mountainside as he fell.

In other words it was a huge fall, and he probably wrecked the entire mountainside in his tumnle down.

Adding to this, fans of Tolkiens dragons have a tendency to awaken this idea of stupidly huge creatures... When Tolkien himself actually drew Smaug, and while he's big, he's not THAT big.

But what do you think? Was he meant to just be a huge, black, oversized dragon, or was he genuinely meant to be a kaju in his own right?

I'm inclined not to go Kaiju level with anything in Tolkien's world. Movie adaptations with surfing elves aside, it's not an Extreme setting, so there's no need to go that over-the-top. And I agree that a dragon doesn't have to be that big to devastate a city.

That said, I think Tolkien was purposefully vague about that kind of thing, hence the infamous debate about whether Balrogs have wings. And Smaug in the Hobbit movies was the second best part of them. So it's all fun, even if a T-Rex-sized dragon is more than scary enough for me.
