what does tanoraqui *mean* actually? I’ve been wondering for a while!

It's from the Dalemark Quartet by iconic British YA fantasy author Diana Wynne Jones! Well, not directly - but there's a character named Tanaqui who is the narrator of the third book and the "woman weaving the tale of history on her loom" archetype in the in-canon mythology. And DWJ isn't really given to linguistic worldbuilding, but she does include, in these books, that "or" is an infix meaning "younger." There's a mythical musician named Tanamil so a music nerd (traveling bard) names his son Tanamoril, etc.

So I take up the name "Tanoraqui" to shoutout one of my favorite books & authors, and to aspirationally identify myself as an heir of one of my favorite storyteller tropes!

Realizations upon rereading The Crown of Dalemark:

Duck realized he was Undying when he stopped aging quite young

Tanaqui, Hern, and Gull got old like normal people

Conclusion: For most of their adult lives, Duck thought that he would have to watch all of his siblings die while he lived forever

Jumping headfirst back into a super old fandom of mine, the Dalemark Quartet. I’ve been rereading the series lately for the first time in almost 10 years, and I thought it would be fun to try drawing the four protagonists!

A little bit on the backgrounds below the cut:

Moril: Originally I wanted to put Clennen’s cart in the background, but I realized that would be too hard to do from memory. ;;; So I went with the clearing where Clennen was buried instead. ;;;;

Mitt: Since most of Drowned Ammet takes place at sea, it only made sense to give him an ocean background. Although I did consider putting the Holy Islands in the background too.

Tanaqui: It seemed like a lot of key things happened in and around the rushes in The Spellcoats (meeting Tanamil, talking with her mother Anoreth, etc...), and Tanaqui is named for the rushes, so I went with the rushes.

Maewen: Since she traveled the green roads that Noreth was meant to travel, I decided a background with one of the paths would be best. It’s supposed to be a hill but I’m not sure how convincing of a hill the background is... ;;;;

Trick or treat! Queen's Thief series or Spellcoats please?

This is a great combination because one of my favorite pet headcanons is that these series take place on different continents in the same world. The vibes just match, you know? The themes of real people becoming history and legends, the amount of fantasy in the fantasy settings (very little, really, and both ambling toward industrial revolutions). The way the gods do and do not interact with and relate to humans; how the older gods are more nature-based and the younger more human. Eugenides the god could so be an Undying of Dalemark, as could Immakuk and Ennikar.

Another dwj-one 🙈 I might be moving on to the other characters if I can keep up my motivation for it. Robin at the top gull left, hern right tanaqui at the bottom and duck in the middle (kind of forgot him at first, that's why it is awkward) I always thought of Gull as bit of high-school American football player handsome, since he is not described much in the book.
