Tell me the most CHARACTER DEFINING episodes of Doctor Who... For EVERY COMPANION. 1963 - 2024.

OK, so I worry this list will not satisfy you. It's been over a decade since I've done a full Doctor Who watch through, so there's a lot of companions I haven't seen in a long time. Some of these choices, as a result, will be a bit vibes based.

I was going to do some justification write-up on some, but I'm looking at a list of like 60 names (and that's after I omitted the 10th Doctor Specials companions since they're all only one episode). Feel free to ask me about any specific choices.

This will be TV Companions (counting plot-important Webisodes as TV, but most of those are just regular TV companions anyway), but I do reserve the right to have an audio adventure as the chosen episode (in one case, it's a Companion Chronicle). I am also including spin-off shows.

Born on a crisp autumn evening in Salem, Massachusetts, Ulyana came into the world as a hybrid: half witch, half human. Her father was human, while her mother wielded powerful magic in secret, using her abilities to protect their town and, most importantly, her family. Though Ulyana and her siblings carried the witching gene, it seemed to skip their generation, leaving them without any magical talents. As a child, Ulyana often felt the sting of disappointment of being part supernatural with no abilities, but everything changed when she was 11.

When a neighbor caught her mother practicing witchcraft, the small town’s conservative roots flared up despite how the city celebrated and capitalized on their witchy history, unleashing a wave of fear and anger. What began as sideways glances and hushed whispers quickly escalated into a furious mob targeting her family. Faced with imminent danger, Ulyana's mother made the heart-wrenching choice to flee, leaving her children in the care of their father. Life became a struggle; their father worked long hours to make ends meet, and the only connection to their mother came through sporadic letters and phone calls. Although the townsfolk eventually accepted the family again after realizing the remaining were "normal", Ulyana felt the deep isolation of being different, grappling with feelings of betrayal and longing for her mother.

Navigating life became a challenge but Ulyana immersed herself in the supernatural world, absorbing every book she could find about its mysteries. She thought that by mastering knowledge, she could shield herself from emotional pain. She became very logical; leading her life with her brain and closing off her heart. This quest for understanding paid off when she graduated college at 19, majoring in Anthropology with a minor in Biology. Yet, while her intellect opened doors, it kept her from forming genuine connections; something she craved but the void of her mother’s absence felt so overwhelming that she couldn't let herself feel. She couldn’t let others in.

A week after graduation, a letter from her mother changed everything. She wrote of a city she settled in where the supernatural and mundane coexisted peacefully. Without hesitation, Ulyana packed her bags and journeyed to Northknot, where she was finally reunited with her mother. Living among the supernatural was a natural fit for her. Still, she enrolled in graduate school to continue her research, earning her doctorate in Supernatural History by the age of 22. However, her newfound stability was shattered when a rogue group of supernaturals attacked the city. Despite her lack of magical abilities, Ulyana’s extensive knowledge made her an invaluable asset and she was quickly recruited to help defend Northknot and identify the attackers.

That summer, while exploring a wooded path, Ulyana’s life took another turn. A sudden attack from an elf was prevented by Theo, a psychic who appeared just in time. He destroyed the elf's bow and arrow and they ran off in fear. Ulyana felt so grateful for him. She'd seen Theo around town before but didn't really know him. She assumed they wouldn't have anything in common but their unexpected friendship blossomed, revealing hidden depths in both of them. Ulyana’s bookish demeanor contrasted sharply with Theo’s bad-boy charm, but they complemented each other perfectly. Their bond deepened as Ulyana learned to embrace her emotions, finding comfort in Theo’s thoughtful side. They navigated the supernatural world together, learning more and more about their history and their abilities.

Ulyana developed so much love and respect for Theo; her first genuine and deep relationship outside of her family. The following is the thought process I'm usuing to vote, obviously you don't have to follow this but seems like people could use some guidance

I am considering any events that happen from the character first setting foot on the TARDIS to when they either make the decision to leave or can no longer renter for whatever reason (death/kicked out/left behind)

I am taking the characters experiences as a whole, a generally good time with one story where horrendous stuff happens to them will not rank highly to me

I know i’m several years late and yall don’t want to hear it but...

Bo wasn’t in love with Tamsin and that is why they didn’t end up together.

Now before yall get mad and tell me to get out of the tags with my shipper hate and blah blah- I AM A VALKUBUS FAN. I ship Valkubus probably harder than Doccubus. But in the end I still think the show made the right choice. Just because you think a ship should be doesn’t mean it has to be. And just because they killed Tamsin and you didn’t get what you wanted doesn’t mean “LGBTQ FANS DESERVE BETTER” should have been trending. Because news flash, this was one of the BEST shows for lesbian and bisexual women to watch. It literally FED US every episode. AND Bo ended up with a woman. Don’t pull that LGBTQ fans deserve better bullshit with Lost Girl. LGBTQ fans ATE. If you really want to be upset about something you should be upset about the lack of BIPOC on the show and that the one main character who was black was brutally killed off. But yall don’t want me to go there. I digress. Anyways, as much as I absolutely love Tamsin and as much as she’s my favorite character, and as much as I wanted her with Bo, I knew it wouldn’t happen and I wasn’t mad about it and still thought the story was beautiful. Why would I want Valkubus endgame when it was clear Bo didn’t feel the same way about Tamsin? I don’t want a one sided ship. And towards the end it was super cringe watching Tamsin be in love with Bo and Bo be like uhhhhh yeah roomieeee. Bo obviously liked Tamsin, she cared about her, and she loved her- just not in that way. Bo fooled around with Tamsin because Tamsin is hot, and smart, and funny, and badass and loyal and protective. She’s great and Bo didn’t think anything would be wrong with it. I believe she thought they could have a FWB thing going. She didn’t know that it meant more to Tamsin than it did to her. And that really isn’t anyone's fault. Sure she probably should have figured out sooner that Tamsin had feelings for her but she didn’t. Also with Tamsin’s death I thought it was beautiful. I also thought it fit the story of Tamsin being on her last life and rising into the sky. It was sad of course, I wish she could have lived, but I didn’t think there was ANYTHING wrong with how they did it. It was heartbreaking and it sucked to see her hurting so much and get hurt so much but I don’t think it was intentionally or purposely cruel for the sake of being cruel. I thought it was wrapped up nicely. She got to find love and be loved, she saved Bo, she found friends and a family and she took back her power. 

Also, the way Anna played Bo was perfect in terms of her acting and showing who Bo really had feelings for. It was Lauren. Not Dyson, not Tamsin. Lauren. The longing glances, the soft eyes, Anna really played it up when she had her scenes with Zoie. She would not do those same longing glances or soft eyes with Dyson or Tamsin. While she didn’t know (I don’t think she knew) that Dyson and Tamsin weren’t end game, I think it was clear to her as it was clear to me that Bo didn’t share those feelings that Tamsin had and she also didn’t love Dyson as strongly as he loved her. She fell for Lauren. Her and Tamsin hooking up was fun to Bo, she likes sex, she likes hot women, she didn’t think she was hurting anyone. And once she figured out that Tamsin thought they were in a relationship, she ended it. Anyways, I just had to say this. I know it’s unpopular because most opinions I’ve seen say Valkubus should have been end game and why did they do Tamsin so bogus. But I really think the show made the right choice. The right choice doesn’t always have to be the popular one or one that fans wanted. It can be the right choice for the show, and for it’s characters. Which I think it was.
