News–Will Kumbakonam be Made a Separate District?

Tamilnadu Revenue Minister RB Udayakumar gave out an announcement that Kumbakonam will be made a separate district soon. However, the locals, including farmers and traders, are not quite optimistic about its formation as they have been kept waiting for too long. 

Swamimalai S Vimalnathan, the secretary of Thanjavur District Cauvery Farmers Protection Association, said that almost 206 crores were allocated by the late chief minister J Jayalalitha for the development of the needed infrastructure with the bifurcation of the district in mind. But then the plan got stuck in the mud following political interventions. He added that because Kumbakonam is already a ‘temple city’, and classified as a special grade municipality, it must be made a new district without any further delay. 

The second biggest city in the delta and third biggest in the central region, Kumbakonam fuels the economic engine of the region. Even though it doesn’t have a collector office, it houses nearly all headquarter offices. Since 1975, it has been the division of Tamilnadu State Transport Corporation Limited (TNSTC) for 9 revenue districts. The Kumbakonam municipality, which is 150-years old, houses the district headquarters of GH (Government Hospital), chief judicial magistrate court, IT, BSNL and several head offices.

Kumbakonam is second to none in terms of population, revenue and cultural heritage in the region. There are lots of small scale industrial units such as stainless steel utensils, Natchiyarkoil brass lamp, silk sarees and icon centres in and around Swamimalai churning jobs to tens and thousands of people living here.
