கற்பு/Kaṟpu (Chastity) Chastity is generally defined as the act of abstaining from extramarital or all sorts of intercourse. My views on ‘Karpu’, have been heavily influenced by the works of Periyar. In his 1942 book பெண் ஏன் அடிமையானாள்? (why were women enslaved?) Periyar tears down every social hindrance and patriarchal norm that oppresses and enslaves women. The first two essays discuss chastity and how it became a tool to oppress and control women. According to him, the word karpu has the word root ‘kal’ (to learn). If we look at it in this context, “karpenappaduvadhu solthitambamai” would simply mean ‘living up to one's words’, which contains concepts of integrity and truth. However, over the years the word karpu has been used to indicate ‘Magalir Nirai’ (virtues of women). There is no evidence to prove that the word karpu only applies to women. In the English language Chastity simply means ‘virginity’ or ‘purity’. Within this framework, the word can be applied to all genders. In Sanskrit, chastity is identified as ‘pativrata’ (loyal wifehood) and this is where the word chastity becomes a sexist term. He also criticizes the works of Thiruvalluvar as being sexist (chapters 6 & 91) and questions if women themselves had written Thirukural or other epics, they would have portrayed such sexist ideas. Chastity is an age-old toxic tradition that is still justified and glorified across different cultures. The concept of chastity has been aggrandized and a woman's worth and her character questioned if she chooses to no longer be “chaste”. Calling female bodies “pure” and “valuable” only commodifies them and thus, dehumanises them. It, for centuries, has stripped them of their expressive and sexual agency, even criminalise it. Forced chastity continues to be one of the biggest tools of oppression in modern society. While chastity can be a virtue, it must always be an independent decision irrespective of gender and not a social standard. K Devery was also in a really cute movie called 'this place' that just premiered at TIFF, the acting of some of the side characters was a little awkward along with the script (very much a first feature film) but I liked it a lot. She plays an Iranian - Kanienʼkehá꞉ka student who goes to Toronto to learn more about her father, and meets a Tamil girl in a laundromat which kicks off a cute love story. It's also very much about the city and identity and family and trauma, I was pleasantly surprised and charmed by it. No idea if it's getting picked up by a streaming site or a release, but if it does you should definitely check it out!

Oh, wow, you were able to watch it?? Nice! I was only able to see it advertised on Twitter, it's actually what I was thinking of when I said multiple wlw roles, since I could only remember The Order otherwise. She's already so prolific, though, I might have missed some.

And yeah, I was reading that summary and thinking, those are not character backgrounds you see often! I do like that Canada is willing to go with these diverse actors and stories pretty regularly. I hope I get a chance to watch for sure, thanks for the added info and rec!

Friend!!! How have you peered into my head because Im playing DND for the first time and last night was creating a character with my friends using Parvathy as a facecast and spiralled from this picture on her Instagram thinking of a story with her and Sai Pallavi in period era, 1930s Tamil Nadu as women in the anticaste independence movement who fall in love!!!!! Parvathy is a writer and poet and Sai Pallavi is a performer in an anti imperialist theatre troupe.

But honestly I feel like they would have really great chemistry together, and would love to see them in a period piece together. I definitely feel like her and Aishwarya Rajesh too would make a good match, like a Kanaa sequel where Parvathy is a sports reporter following Kousalya for a story and falling in love in the process.
