So I binged 'Awkward'...

... Over the course of three weeks and I loved it! It had the right amount of drama and I am, in fact, Tamara Judith Kaplan, brillz (Jillian Rose Reed is also really cool to follow on Insta)

Also Beau Mirchoff has my heart, Matty was a very well-written character and I found out that he also directed one of the episodes in season 5, so cool

Jake and Lissa were great additions to the lead cast, I love them too - those character developments were soooo gooooooood (also nice redemption arch for Sadie)

Still, just like Jenna, the series kind of derailed - Why is everything so hard and why was Jenna so mean to Matty and overthinking people's behaviour always in a bad way? Why can't people see the good in people?

The first three seasons were v nice, but season four and five were all over the place, not sure what happened there

Final note, I know I am late with this kind of review since the show aired between 2011-2016 and it's now 2021 (ew)

“Awkward” is about the specific incidents in our formative years that define us -sometimes for the best and sometimes for the worst. The show centers around fifteen-year-old Jenna Hamilton, who, like many, feels invisible to her peers and desperately wants to find her place – which is hard to do in a day and age where fitting in means standing out. Unfortunately, Jenna’s visibility comes on the heels of an accident that gives her a not-so-fun stigma. And while the stigma of her accident could be the curse of her life, Jenna’s determined to make it her life’s blessing.

Review: Okay, so this may seem like a typical teenage drama series, and well, it actually is one, but hear me out. I myself am not a big fan of teenage drama series (or at least I won’t admit it haha), but this series caught my attention for some reason.

That may be because of the main character, Jenna, who is oh so relatable for her awkwardness. The characters seem to be a bit flat in the beginning, but they develop a deeper personality as the series goes on.

Of course the main goal for such a series is to keep the viewer guessing if certain people end up together or not. Also, more often than not, a lot of the episodes end with a cliffhanger, which of course causes you as a viewer to wonder what may happen next (that is, if you stop the episode right before the preview of the next one). I accidentally saw a few previews and it didn’t help me get more excited for the next episode. It actually caused the complete opposite. I felt like I already knew too much and wondered if it even was worth it to watch the next one or if I should skip it and watch the episode after the next one.

What bothered me a bit was that some characters seemed to make the same mistakes twice, or that their personality didn’t change a bit over time. Like, they didn’t even learn from their mistakes in the past. But I guess that’s also how things go in real life. Sometimes we can’t change for the better, even though we made the same mistakes twice or even more often.

Towards the end (especially the last few episodes), things get rougher and more intense of course. And contrary to what I’ve said before, a character acknowledges that people have changed. The ending was good and kinda nostalgic in my opinion. I get why people  may be unsatisfied though.

So if you are up to reliving your teenage years, with all the drama and awkward, even cringy situations, that it comes with, this series is for you. Especially if you dig romance or complicated  relationships. This tv series surely plays a lot with your emotions.
