Ever heard of In The Aftermath? It's a bizarre Americanization of Angel's Egg. Has a classic piano scene tho.

I didn't recognize it by name, but I looked it up and I have DEFINITELY seen this cover art before, probably when searching to see if Angel's Egg was available on DVD back during my heavy DVD collecting days.

I was gonna talk about how nearly all Americanizations of foreign films pretty much suck ass, but briefly reading into the history of this one, it actually seems kind of interesting. From what I surmise, American distributors were interested in releasing Angel's Egg here in the US, but decided it was too short (most anime movies run about 60-70~ mins, vs the average American movie running at least 90-120~ mins), and that they would need to bulk up the movie to make it worth releasing. So they hired a second director to add an entire B-plot to the movie, shot in live-action, of a similarly-themed story about a soldier carrying a radioactive "egg" through a wasteland, who occasionally falls asleep and dreams of the animated world, splicing the two films together to create a bizarre crossover type thing.

This sort of thing kind of annoys me on one hand, because it feels so unnecessary. We have to re-shape everything so that it fits into an American box, completely skewing the shape of the original art. And yet, despite that, there is also a certain charm to our weird remixes and our extremely specific localization changes. Something tells me I would probably prefer to just watch the original Tamago no Tenshi (Angel's Egg) version, but I guess this could be interesting too?

Maybe I'll give it a watch some day.
