Episode 18 ~ The Sound Of Friendship

Talon came over because he said he was just passing by but he did have some pretty big news. Valeria, my big sister, is pregnant. "It's been a while, actually, she's almost due?"

"Well, I'm surprised she didn't tell me!"

"Ah, you know how she is, very isolated. I'd figure I'd let you know that you may have a niece or nephew on the way."

"Not sure if it is a boy or girl yet?"

"We'll just find out when it happens!" He says. I’m pretty excited for that, the family grows! Hopefully, she has a boy since I’ve already had two girls, then there’s Paola, so a boy would be a nice addition to our family tree.

Watching Hasan Minhaj’s Patriot Games (highly recommended), I learned a few astonishing facts. In an episode about the NRA (not highly recommended), Hasan claimed Mexico, with a population of 130 million people over 30,000 gun deaths annually, has only one store that sells guns! Almost all guns are smuggled in from the US. In another episode about the sport of cricket, which India dominates, it was pointed out that cricket is not an Olympic sport, which is too bad considering how poorly India has done in the Olympics. In spite of having over a billion people India has only won 28 Olympic medals, the same number as US swimmer Michael Phelps!

When Despicable Donald stood before a supposed image of the Great Seal of the US at the Teen Student Support Summit none of them had a clue that they were being spoofed. Instead of arrows this bird had a handful of golf clubs clutched in its left claw while the right set of talons clutched a wad of cash instead of an olive branch. A Spanish insult was inscribed in place the US’s Latin motto. Finally, the head of the eagle was replaced by a two-headed imperial bird lifted straight from the Russian coat of arms. It was later learned that this seal was created as a protest by graphical designer Charles Leazott in 2016, a Republican who was nevertheless disgusted that Trump had been elected.

After the first quarter’s surprisingly strong rate of 3.1% growth in the economy, the recent release of economic figures for the second quarter showed the GDP growth rate tumbling to only 2.1%, making a mockery of Trump’s boasts to grow the economy at a rate of at least 3%.

The world’s combined debt – held by governments, consumers, and businesses – has risen to more than 300% of global GDP, notably higher than the 260% level before the 2008 financial crisis. Since then many consumers have reduced their debt but governments and companies outside the financial sector have added more debt. Risky areas include corporate debt in China, foreign-currency borrowing in emerging markets, and riskier corporate loans in the US.

When Heidi Gamez Garcia lost her grandfather to gang violence in Honduras, at age 9 she was sent to live with her Aunt in New York. Her father’s promise to join her kept her going for 4 years but he was repeatedly delayed at the border. Finally, distraught over his latest detention, Heidi tried to hang herself and doctors have declared her brain dead. Her father has finally been allowed to be with her, to say goodbye and to take her off life support.

Episode 14 ~ Do It With Class

The men meanwhile were playing a game of one on one, I think. Talon was winning the game, easily.

"You're letting yourself go, man," Talon says as he drains another shot. Alejandro has long since given up and conceded victory to his friend. "Not your body, your mind."

"What in the world are you going on about?" Alejandro challenged.

"Oh, this whole Phoenix thing, don't underestimate her. She's going to challenge you, personally, to a duel of sorts."

"You think I'd lose to her?" Alejandro scoffed at the idea.

"I dunno, possibly. She gets off on this sort of thing. Humbling other agents. She's like a gatekeeper of sorts. Be careful."

And so they did. They said their vows which were simple and basic but expressed their love and the preacher did his part, speaking quickly and rushing. "You may kiss the bride," he said. three minutes must have passed, maybe one.

But it was over. Valeria Avila became Valeria Gamez and it was sealed with a kiss that lasted probably a little longer than their actual marriage. Thankfully, this beach was far and out of the way and so it would maybe be the perfect place to consummate their marriage.

Talon sat up then and although Valeria knew his counter-argument against a formal ceremony she was never prepared for it because she understood, she even agreed. She would only do this for her mom, Araceli, who had become obsessed with weddings recently, or really, since forever. "You have to do what's right for you. If you want something more formal, traditional," he shrugged those huge shoulders of his. "Then I'm fine with that. But you made it clear that you wanted to elope, this change of mind-"

"This weekend?" She decided it would all be perfect, the perfect weekend. "New Year’s Eve in some other place, a real vacation, just the two of us," He was right, this is what she wanted. Something quick, something easy, something just for the two of them and no one else. It was selfish but it is what she wanted. 

"Sounds like a plan?"

"Sounds like a plan!"

They had played on the shore for what must have been two or so hours, dancing in the water and enjoying the weather. Soon, the sun hung high and hot and soon a grunt could be heard further into the beach. The preacher had arrived and he wasn't patient. He didn't have all day and wanted very much to get this over with.

Valeria and Talon had decided that Sulani was the perfect place for their marriage, although, Valeria regretted using Simbnb for a room. "This place smells like...smoke," she groaned, rubbing at her temples for a moment.

"At least it's clean," Talon said with a chuckle, and it was very much so. Spotless. There was a hint that the guy that lived here didn't really spend much time here, well, other than the hint of smoke that seemed clung to every fabric in the room.

Valeria was excited to finally get out of their rented home and onto the sandy shores of Sulani, a town that was breathtaking and she could only question how anyone could live here? Wouldn't that spoil its beauty? That's what happens with anything, right?

When it was done they were left panting, Valeria more than Talon, and sweating, Talon more than Valeria. It went as usual, they were both left satisfied and fulfilled, but Valeria had something else on her mind.

"Mom is annoying Dulce with all of this wedding talk," she said as soon as she caught her breath. Talon grunted, not much interested in the topic, and still gathering himself. "You know, Dulce actually planned the wedding for some other woman, Marta I think her name was, she really enjoyed it."

"Having second thoughts?" Talon asked carefully, afraid of the answer he would get.

Valeria sat up then, energy surging through her. She had thought about this more than he did and she had prepared her argument as if this were a scheduled debate. "I was thinking that we could have a small wedding, something intimate, still with family and friends. It doesn't have to be like Dulce's or anything but..."

Talon chuckled. He didn't say anything at first, he just looked up at her. Happy to have her. Happy that they were getting married at all. It’s just that this was different from what they had planned. 

Valeria continued, feeling as though she were winning this battle. "...I'm just worried that mom won't be too happy to find out about it, if we go through with it and elope."

The scent that haunted the room wasn't Valeria's only concern. "I was thinking about Paola and how she's going to miss out on this and-"

Talon took her hand and gently kissed her fingers, aiming for the spot that would wear his ring for the rest of her life, or that was the plan. "I know, I think about that too," he said with a soft whisper. It was the one downside they both agreed with. Paola wouldn't get to experience a wedding and Valeria thought that was important, she wasn’t too young, love may not be understood by children but it is always felt. "We can back out now if you want or-"

Valeria shook her head. "No, you know what? It'll be fine. Dulce is going to have a grand wedding and we can all go as a family."

...yet. They hadn't given her a sibling yet, but it wasn't for lack of trying. Valeria and Talon spent a lot of time in their bed and went at it as if the world was coming to an end a week from now. This, they both agreed, was the best way to express love.

Episode 16 ~ No Country For Old Men

"I did, yes, and I thank you for it, it will help me a lot." Henry shook his hand with passion. Yet still, there was a bit of doubt in his eyes about this transaction. He had dirt on his political opponent and for free. "What's in this for you? What's in this for the 'people' you work for?" Those ‘people’, Talon’s organization, were a complete mystery to him. 

"Simple," Talon began. "We don't like corrupt politicians. Belinda is dangerous, mayor today, president tomorrow. She has charisma, she's smart, she knows what she's doing. We want to make sure we take her down before she gets too big to take down. We’re the good guys here, don’t worry. I just can’t go into depth about what it is that we do."

"Well, I'm your man then! I won't jump into it but-"

"We trust you'll make the right moves. Just discredit her and the people will have her removed. It doesn’t have to happen tomorrow, next week, or next month. Just make sure it happens."

He was due to meet Henry Fournier and then he could go home. He found the man inside of a little den at the back of the park, starting a fire for reasons Talon couldn’t explain. Perhaps it was actually cold to residents here? 

He ran his hand through his wet mop of hair, water flinging everywhere but his curls maintained.  "Did you get that thing I sent ya?" he asked.

"So," a voice popped up behind him. He had been waiting for Agent Talon but he still managed to sneak up on him. "Just so you know, I can't promise you protection. That's not how this works."

Landen turned his head back slightly, getting a quick glimpse at the man. "I've been working in law enforcement my entire life, I know how this works."

"Nothing wrong with chasing glory. I just wanted to let you know, this is a dangerous game you play. These people, they aren't two-bit thugs. They will chop you up piece by piece and send the remains to your children."

"I know. That's why I'm doing this."

Talon was growing tired of Oasis Springs. It was hot, dry, and just very very unpleasant. He couldn't imagine ever living in this place. He thought he'd welcome the rain but that made the ground annoyingly muddy and goopy. He couldn't wait to get out of here but he had a job to do before he could check out...
