Okay, let's run some inventory of my life of reading so far:
I can't remember if I've also read the Lord of the Rings books or just saw the movies and then read The Hobbit after. I definitely read one of my dad's copies of the Hobbit. At the very least, that nets me 1 point.
I quit reading Harry Potter either after book 5 or early into book 6. If memory serves there were like 9 books so I'll chalk that as a 0.5.
I think I read some of To Kill a Mockingbird but something caused to me to never finish. Another 0.5.
One of my college courses used excerpts of Catch 22 for assignments but I was not given the book to read. I'm not gonna count it.
Does it have to all of Shakespeare's works to count? I can't remember how many of his poems and sonnets I've read but I believe the plays are Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Othello, Merchant of Venice, and A Midsummer Night's Dream. What'd that be? 0.2? 0.3?
Hang on a moment, the question's if I've read them, not finished them, that could arguably be 3 points to my total.
My experience with The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy has largely been just with the TV show, but my chemistry/astronomy teacher in high school did keep a copy of The Restaurant at the End of the Universe in her classroom for a time and I did get halfway through before it got lost/stolen/damaged/taken home/etc. Thing is, the list doesn't mention it as a series, so I don't know if that counts as a point or even a fraction.
Don't think it was every book, but my dad had most of the Chronicles of Narnia collection and I read all I could. This includes The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. 2 Points!
I should get/borrow some copies of the works of Alexandre Dumas.
I have read Moby Dick! 1 point.
I'm starting to think I read a copy of A Christmas Carol around the same year I read Moby Dick but I can't trust my memory enough to score that.
I've read Charlotte's Web! 1 Point.
Look, I'm a sucker for detective fiction and that started thanks to The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. 1 point.
Time to ask once again if they're asking for the series or just one in it, because while I'm pretty sure I've only seen 2 of the film adaptations of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I definitely read the book's sequel, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.
With that, it's time to tally a temporary total.
If full reads (including of series) are required for full points: 7.2 or so
If partial reads (excluding excerpts) are fine, but books in a series when the series is not directly mentioned won't count: 9
If partial reads and touching a book in a series that isn't directly mentioned as a series counts: 11
The final total can be determined once somebody comes around to serve as a judge to what I'm submitting here.
How many have you read?
The BBC estimates that most people will only read 6 books out of the 100 listed below. Reblog this and bold the titles you’ve read.
1 Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen 2 Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkein 3 Jane Eyre – Charlotte Bronte 4 Harry Potter series 5 To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee 6 The Bible 7 Wuthering Heights – Emily Bronte 8 Nineteen Eighty Four – George Orwell 9 His Dark Materials – Philip Pullman 10 Great Expectations – Charles Dickens 11 Little Women – Louisa M Alcott 12 Tess of the D’Urbervilles – Thomas Hardy 13 Catch 22 – Joseph Heller 14 Complete Works of Shakespeare 15 Rebecca – Daphne Du Maurier 16 The Hobbit – JRR Tolkien 17 Birdsong – Sebastian Faulks 18 Catcher in the Rye 19 The Time Traveller’s Wife - Audrey Niffeneger 20 Middlemarch – George Eliot 21 Gone With The Wind – Margaret Mitchell 22 The Great Gatsby – F Scott Fitzgerald 23 Bleak House – Charles Dickens 24 War and Peace – Leo Tolstoy 25 The Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – Douglas Adams 26 Brideshead Revisited – Evelyn Waugh 27 Crime and Punishment – Fyodor Dostoyevsky 28 Grapes of Wrath – John Steinbeck 29 Alice in Wonderland – Lewis Carroll 30 The Wind in the Willows – Kenneth Grahame 31 Anna Karenina – Leo Tolstoy 32 David Copperfield – Charles Dickens 33 Chronicles of Narnia – CS Lewis 34 Emma – Jane Austen 35 Persuasion – Jane Austen 36 The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe – CS Lewis 37 The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini 38 Captain Corelli’s Mandolin - Louis De Bernieres 39 Memoirs of a Geisha – Arthur Golden 40 Winnie the Pooh – AA Milne 41 Animal Farm – George Orwell 42 The Da Vinci Code – Dan Brown 43 One Hundred Years of Solitude – Gabriel Garcia Marquez 44 A Prayer for Owen Meaney – John Irving 45 The Woman in White – Wilkie Collins 46 Anne of Green Gables – LM Montgomery 47 Far From The Madding Crowd – Thomas Hardy 48 The Handmaid’s Tale – Margaret Atwood 49 Lord of the Flies – William Golding 50 Atonement – Ian McEwan

2024: Book 14 - Hating the Player
Tumblr media
Hating the Player by Rebecca Jenshak My rating: 4 of 5 stars Second in the Campus Wallflowers series I wish I could say I liked this one better than the first, but I didn't. It was well written and paced…but there were issues. First: Gavin and Violet were just starting a relationship when she finds him coming out of her former roommates bedroom…but there's no explanation from him because he doesn't remember anything? My friend…why are you drinking that much? That's not healthy. Second: I understand feeling betrayed, but she already knew that her roommate wasn't a great person, so maybe she could have put her critical thinking cap on and waited to see what happened? I mean…I don't like a cheater, but maybe stop and think for a moment and ask yourself if what you think you're seeing really tallies with the guy you think he is…But no…let's just be mad immediately and stay that way…to the point that you make your life, your new roommates lives, and Gavin's life miserable. Lastly: Why does Violet never get to find out exactly what happened? Why does Gavin get no redemption? I know he fuckboi'd around after Violet broke things off…and I won't pretend to understand why that's interesting or romantic because it's DEFINITELY not…but he is a college kid and college kid do dumb things…But (view spoiler)[ this guy was essentially sexually assaulted and lost the girl he was falling in love with and we don't see any comeuppance for the girl who did that to him? Nor do we see him get redemption in the eyes of the girl he's fallen in love with? (hide spoiler)] I know it sounds like I didn't like this book…but I actually did. I really liked Gavin, despite his sleeping around, because once Violet gave him a second chance he was back in the game and focused on her. I enjoyed their shared love of movies and the way he supported her goals and hobbies. Overall it was a cute book…I just wish there had been some additions. I use the CAWPILE Review method for my reviews (see explanation here), just to keep me honest and help me understand what exactly I liked/didn't like. My ratings are below. Characters: 7/10 Atmosphere/Setting: 6/10 Writing: 8/10 Plot: 7/10 Intrigue: 7/10 Logic/Relationships: 8/10 Enjoyment: 8/10 Total rating 51/70 divided by 7 = 7.2 ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ 🌶️ 🌶️ View all my reviews

Davao VRU: Leading the Vice Crackdown
Tumblr media
A Sizeable Haul for Davao's VRU
Davao City, September 14, 2023 – The Vices Regulation Unit (VRU), an arm of the Davao City Mayor’s Office, is celebrating a substantial victory in its ongoing battle against vices. The VRU has amassed an impressive PHP 7.2 million in fines from offenders, a testament to their unwavering commitment to enforcing city ordinances, as of July this year.   The Breakdown of Collections Data freshly acquired from the VRU this Thursday divulged that the bulk of this collection, spanning from January to July, was derived from fines and penalties linked to various city ordinances. The anti-smoking ordinance, contributing PHP 4.4 million, led the way, followed by the liquor ban at PHP 2.3 million, and insobriety at PHP 468,000.
The Crusade's Commander
Hernando Las, the indefatigable VRU chief, emphasized that a significant portion of these fines stemmed from violations of the city’s anti-smoking and liquor ban regulations. Their efforts in catching violators were bolstered through partnerships with local law enforcement agencies, particularly in the post-pandemic landscape.   The Midnight Sentinel "In the wee hours, commencing at 1 a.m. and extending until 8 in the morning, the mere presence of a beer on a table, regardless of its state, full or half-full, serves as incontrovertible evidence for us. We meticulously document it before issuing a citation ticket," Las elaborated during an interview.
Navigating the Liquor Ban Waters
The city's liquor ban ordinance strictly prohibited purchasing and consuming alcoholic beverages in public spaces from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m., and it also considered possession of alcoholic beverages during this timeframe as a violation.   Enforcing Accountability VRU records underscored that apprehensions under the anti-smoking ordinance surged to 4,600 from January to July this year, marking a substantial increase compared to the 3,551 cases during the same period in 2022. Of these cases, 4,355 have complied with the regulations, while 245 cases remain embroiled in legal proceedings.   A Public Service Reminder Las issued a poignant reminder to the public, emphatically asserting that smoking in public spaces was strictly verboten. Furthermore, he urged individuals to take advantage of designated smoking areas, emphatically stressing that city visitors were not exempt from this regulation.   Liquor Ban Violations Under Scrutiny In a parallel narrative, Las underscored the surge in liquor ban violations this year, with 1,121 cases recorded over the past seven months, surpassing last year's tally of 922 during the same period by 199 cases. Out of these cases, 774 individuals have followed the regulations, while legal proceedings have entangled the remaining 347 cases. As the VRU persists in its relentless mission to combat vices in Davao City, we encourage both residents and visitors to stay vigilant and abide by these crucial ordinances, contributing to a safer and more orderly urban environment.   Sources: THX News & Philippine News Agency. 'The Wild Life Of The Fox' by John Lewis-Stempel (2020).
This is a nice little book. Just a few snippets of info from it are listed here:
The word 'fox' comes from the Proto-Germanic 'fuh', meaning 'tail'. In Welsh, the fox is known as 'llwynog' which comes from the word meaning 'bush' (as in 'bushy tail'). The fox uses its tail for balance and to keep itself warm, wrapping it around its head and front when lying down.
Foxes, as with badgers, have lived in the British Isles since the geological Wolstonian period, 352,000 to 130,000 years ago.
Although they are genetically related to dogs, wolves and coyotes as part of the Canidae family, the fox has a strange felinity with its glinting amber eyes, vertical slit pupils and its fondness for pouncing like a cat when hunting. It trots everywhere, but when stalking may smooth itself to the ground and slink, like a cat.
The fox's hearing is so acute it can hear a watch ticking sixty feet away.
Some foxes live alone, some live as partners in a monogamous pair-bond and others in a loose family group called a 'skulk' or 'leash', with female blood relatives helping with the raising of cubs.
Fox meat may well have been on the menu in Ancient Britain as it is edible for human consumption, but it is rarely eaten nowadays as the taste is generally considered unpleasant and the texture too chewy and tough.
Fox-hunting in Britain became a popular sport amongst the upper-class around the 1750s, but during the Middle Ages it was the prey of last resort, ranking seventh after such animals as deer and hares and just above the badger. It reached its zenith of popularity as a field sport before the First World War. It was a very British thing and never travelled well. In America, the fox was allowed to escape, hence the term 'fox-chasing'. Currently, there are approx. 180 packs of foxhounds in the UK; France has three; Portugal one.
The Hunt Saboteurs Association was founded in 1963. [Tactics including using hunting horns and whistles to misdirect hounds, spraying scent dullers, laying false trails and locking gates to interfere with the progress of a hunt.]
The philosophical Victorian animal-rights movement was powered by such intellectual heavyweights as John Stuart Mill and Jeremy Bentham. The latter enquired of animals: "The question is not, Can they reason? Nor, Can they talk? But, Can they suffer?".
Red foxes were introduced to Australia in the nineteenth century for the sole purpose of recreational hunting. Today the fox population there is a staggering 7.2 million and is responsible for a drastic decline in the numbers of native animals and birds.
The cry of 'tally-ho' is derived from the Norman stag-hunting 'taiaut'.
The Japanese legend of the 'kitsune' can shape-shift which reflects the image we have of their enigmatic ambiguity.
Booksellers use the term 'foxed' to describe the rusty staining on book covers.
Notes from other sources:
Foxes have a lifespan of just 2-4 years (though they can live up to 14 years in captivity).
Unlike dogs, foxes are very difficult to train, in part because they have shorter attention spans than domesticated dogs.
Foxes and dogs cannot mate and create hybrids because the two species have vastly different numbers of chromosomes.

Solid import volume growth is the key theme of Descartes’ Global Shipping Report
New Post has been published on https://supplychainmanagementcertificate.com/2023/02/13/solid-import-volume-growth-is-the-key-theme-of-descartes-global-shipping-report/
Solid import volume growth is the key theme of Descartes’ Global Shipping Report
For the month of January, Descartes noted that U.S. container volumes—at 2,068,943 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units)—were up 7.2% compared to December’s 1,929,032 TEU, which were down 1.3% compared to November, and its largest December to January increase in the last six years. While volume saw a sequential gain, they were down 16.1% annually, with the caveat that this tally was only 0.3% below a pre-pandemic January 2019. The report also noted that even though the Lunar New Year was in January, the subsequent impact on import volumes won’t be felt until later this month and into March.

How do the objectives and teaching strategies address the identified LHI?
A group of nursing students wanted to learn more about the health behaviors of adolescents in their community. They decided to have students at the local high school complete a questionnaire about their health behaviors. After the adolescents completed the questionnaire, the nursing students reviewed the responses and tallied the results. They discovered that over half of the adolescents who completed the questionnaire engaged in risky sexual behaviors. They reviewed the literature, which stated that sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates in this population are on the rise. The nursing students decided to educate the adolescents about safe sexual practices and the prevention of STI transmission. The overall goal of the program was to decrease the number of adolescents engaged in risky sexual behaviors. The nursing students developed the following objectives and teaching strategies for this educational program: To instill adolescents with an intrinsic motivation to become aware of their own risky sexual behavior through class discussions and cooperative learning exercises To promote safe sexual practices with the adolescents through demonstration of appropriate safe sex practices and inquiry-guided instruction To develop students’ positive sexual health behaviors through scenario-based case presentations and discussions Review the Healthy People 2030 Leading Health Indicators (LHIs). Identify the LHI that best matches STIs and transmission through risky sexual behaviors. Critique the objectives and teaching strategies used by the student nurses by responding to the following in a minimum of 175 words: How do the objectives and teaching strategies address the identified LHI? What action by the nursing students illustrates the planning phase of the health planning model? Refer to Figure 7.2 in Community Health Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation. Which system level is primarily being addressed through the educational program? Refer to Box 7-2 in Community Health Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation. I’m getting really tired of people going on the defensive when anyone wants to discuss ratings, so let’s take a look at why the perception is that the “ratings are dropping” regardless of whether the show is in jeopardy or not. Keep in mind, we’re five episodes in with thirteen left on the schedule. These numbers are not the final tally.  Season Four:
Tumblr media
- The premiere earned nearly 7.2 million viewers - The episode with the lowest amount of viewers was 4x12 (5.8 million) - 18-49 demo was below 1.00 three times, and never got lower than 0.85 (4x12) Season Five:
Tumblr media
- The premiere earned slightly more than 5 million viewers, the lowest of the season so far (we know, we know. the pr team sucks.) - 18-49 demo has yet to break 0.85 - None of the episodes from season four had viewer numbers as low as these Is 9-1-1 in trouble? No. Not as long as all the rest of FOX’s programming can’t compete with 5+ million viewers every week.  Is it easy to see why fans have concerns re: this season not trending in the “right direction”? Yeah.

Cookie Run Kingdom Survey Results
🌰 Alright, the results are in on the survey you guys filled out! Here are the questions where you voted on the Cookies and the percentages of the total votes received in order of the questions (at least down to the tenths place, so anything labeled as 0.0% is probably somewhere less than 0.1%. It doesn’t always mean they didn’t get any votes). We also totaled the percentages received by rarity AND individual Cookies (out of a possible 600% provided by the 6 questions) to perhaps name an individual winner:
1. Who’s your favorite Cookie?
2. Which Cookie’s voice is your favorite?
3. Which two Cookies do you think would enjoy their company the most? (Votes are tallied on who was selected at all, not by pairs.)
4. Which Cookies would you invite to the year-end party?
6. Is there a Cookie who needs a new costume right now?
9. Which Cookies’ stories would you like to see?

🌰 Well… quite a surprise that the ranks shooks out that way in terms of favorites. Unfortunately, I don’t think the Editor’s guildmaster is going to appreciate the results, seeing her sister second-to-last place. Unsurprisingly, the Legendaries and Ancients held all the top spots for each question. Congratulations to Pure Vanilla Cookie for taking first place out of everyone in terms of the percentages received. Meanwhile, Alchemist Cookie took last place.
