Okay but if I can take this and make this about my blorbo for a second?

This is what I love about Avery. More specifically, this is what I love about the conclusion to their vengeance arc.

Avery is masks on top of masks on top of scars and under THAT. Is the little sliver of what they could have been. Not what they were, what they COULD have been, because everything happened when they were so young that they never really had a chance to grow into who they were going to be. So they're guarding this little scrap of possibility.

And then. They kill their mother.

A murder they've been planning for seventeen years. Justice for their father, who never would have died if his wife hadn't been so capable of cruelty. Revenge for their brother, who got to grow up even less than they did because their mother, his mother, decided to end his life in one bloody split-second. And, in that moment, Avery takes revenge for themself as well. They realize that this isn't just about their brother, their father. Both of them deserved better... But so did Avery. AVERY deserved a better mother than what they got. And it's cathartic. It's almost beautiful, in a twisted, bloody, violent way.

But it's also the moment that little sliver of who Avery could have been dies. Because there IS no going back from this. With this murder, this blood spilled- they can't possibly ever be who they might have been. Who they are has been leading up to this moment for more than half of their life... And now it's over. And the scrap of a child that was left in them is gone and they... Have no idea who they are. A hollow shell, masks on masks on scars on more scars on... Nothing.

And that's terrifying to them. To someone who spent their entire adult life driving towards one thing, finally DOING it, finally seeing it through... What's left now? Avery's original plan? Kill their mother. And then vanish. Maybe die, maybe just disappear. Leave their fate to the Gods- more specifically, the God to whom they sold their soul.

But they are loved now. They have friends. New found family. A lover who might be more than just a casual one now. People are WAITING for them to come back- and those people don't CARE that Avery is nothing more than a hollow mess covered in blood.

And that's where the excitement comes in for them (and for me, as the person writing them). If Avery is nothing but scars and empty space...

What can they fill that empty space with, now? There's nothing but room to grow something new.

"it's okay, i can peel back the layers of you until i find the soft and gentle core of you you've had to work so hard to hide"? no. no, it's okay, i know you're hollow; i'm here anyway. you don't have to pretend it isn't masks the whole way down. whatever face you want to wear, i still love you. i don't need you to be good or unflinching or the antonym of violence. if i did, i wouldn't be here. i wouldn't ask that of you.
