uh oh! some losers on tiktok still don't know the change of what happens in damian's origin + the change in talia's character is based on racist and misogynistic tropes!

ok rant time, stick with me.

the reason i don’t like damian wayne is not that i don't enjoy him as a character, it is that he feels like the final nail in the coffin that is 'robin'. now what do i mean by this? dick grayson as robin is obviously fantastical. he is an interesting foil to bruce/batman, he i tragic and complex, but his backstory is very much not real. he feels like a fictional character, so it isn’t a stretch to suspend disbelief and 'buy' him being robin, so to say. the family dynamic he has with bruce is NOT like father and son (argue with the wall on this one), it's paternal, but regardless of age difference in different interpretations, it is very much an unconventional family dynamic.

now, i've never really had a major issue with jason todd as robin (maybe because he has been red hood for basically my entire lifetime), but he was the first step in a direction of a more traditional family; son, father, grandson (and older brother), which i strongly dislike. now say what you will about jason todd, but he was arguably the most 'real' of the robins (in terms of backstory). he has a much more plausible family background (not counting sheila working with the joker) and feels less like the fantasy of dick grayson and more like wish fulfilment of a poor kid (ultimately this is what i think led to his downfall at dc - they couldn’t sell the 'fantasy' of jason todd in the way they could the other robins).

tim drake is where i kinda take issue. he is the 'normal' robin, but is very clearly an 'upgrade' from jason todd. he fits into the socialite life, bruce is significantly older than him (enough to be his actual father), and dick also takes a much more active role as a 'big brother' than he did with jason. tim drake, as neither dick or jason did, seems like the successor to bruce wayne, as well as batman. he is a genius, brilliant detective, rich and well-versed in the upper echelons of society. he is a HUGE leap in the direction of this sort of 'born for the role' idea i really despise for robin.

(i will take the liberty of following dc's example and overlook stephanie brown's robin)

lastly damian. not only is he batman's biological son, he is a prodigy who has trained since birth to be the next batman and is the heir to the league of assassins (i also hate what his creation meant for talia as a character, but i'll let that rest). he is now amalgamation of this slow trajectory towards robin as an heir who is divinely 'destined' to become batman (evidenced by the fact that damian is the only robin to consistently have the surname wayne).

don’t get me wrong, i greatly enjoy damian wayne and think he has an interesting dynamic with a number of characters and has some really lovely character devlopmemt and arcs, but i hate hate hate how robin went from 'orphans make do' to 'the heir apparent to not only batman but bruce wayne' and i. idk, i just wish dc had kept more of the charm and choice that the relationship between bruce and dick.

In Mistbound D&D last night, our DM decided to throw a fucking BEHOLDER at us despite us only being level 6.

I was thinking, surely it can't be a REAL Beholder, he's just adjusted the stats somehow

and then it blasted a fucking disintegration beam at us.

Now, they dodged it, they were fine, but Talia didn't like that and is an oath of vengeance Paladin. So she ran up, swore a vow of enmity on him on top of her already holding Hunter's Mark, and smacked the shit out of it. I acknowledged that I knew it wouldn't do anything mechanically, but for flavor's sake, said I would grab the eyestalk that just shot at my friend and pull the Beholder closer to me as I smacked it to make myself a problem it couldn't ignore.

Then got a crit, for which Talia still had a level 2 spell slot to burn on a smite.

The results were disgusting.

We're level SIX.

I cannot stress enough, it COULD have been higher, had I not used my stupid Fallen Aasimar shroud in the trash fight leading up to this. It could have been 79 if I'd saved my resources better.

My character before this was a Warlock with hex and invocations boosted Eldritch Blast, at level TWENTY he got 2 crits on the same blast in our last fight and dealt 81 points of damage in a single turn and I'd never been more proud of him.

Talia is level SIX, and I was bad about my resource management, and she did seventy three points of radiant and slashing damage to a Beholder in its own lair, in front of its cult followers, doin em dirty in front of they dad.

Anyway, our DM honored the pants shitting amount of damage she did by saying, yeah, no, you... you cut off that eyestalk. The disintegration beam is gone from the table now. That... what fuck, Talia?

And then getting even more insane, our Barbarian, after failing to make his save to avoid the 41 points of Necrotic damage he wasn't resistant to, had a realization. Talia was tanking the biting damage, and he was tanking the eye beams, but Talia resists necrotic and radiant, and he resists piercing, so we should switch!

So as a halfling, he jumped into its mouth to keep it from biting Talia and to ensure the eyebeams couldn't hit him!

It was.... completely insane and tactically brilliant???? Anyway, he carved it up from the inside out and emerged from that fight bathed in its blood with 3 levels of exhaustion.

It was a good encounter.

We're level 7 now.

Give us all the backstory on Unconditionally!

Hmm, backstory...

So Unconditionally is the retelling of Season 2 through the eyes of John-117 as he perceives the events. But the lens is skewed through his desire to balance his life as the weapon they made him to be and the man he desires to be. I loved how Season 1 began to explore that humanity, though they had some missteps. And Season 2 had to deal with the aftermath of those missteps (Halsey being more of a sociopath than the game/lore Halsey, Cortana being implanted in his actual head, not just his suit, the emotion suppressing pellets and the whole Makee love story...)

I felt that Season 2 was exploring faith, belief, self-doubt and self-discovery which made sense since the whole pellet aspect gave them a ground zero for the self-discovery arc for all of the Spartans. They all suffered growing pains within the small minutes they had carved out within the greater story arc of the Fall of Reach and the race to the Halo and then the introduction of the Flood.

I really felt John-117 arc. His struggles with the emptiness in his brain, the near death experience on Sanctuary coupled with the "prophecy" of the old woman who said she saw his death. But what I found really brilliant was the "Have you family, Spartan? Have you faith? No these things are not for you..." that she espoused really pushed on the nerve for him. He was struggling with his place, his desire to be human and to be in control of his life and at every turn he was cut off at the knees.

I'm a shipper at heart. While I saw that potential with Kai in season 1, it changed and the spark was there with Talia. Then they threw gasoline on it with his visit to her grandmothers and the dinner with her family. They became connected on Sanctuary, then he pursued her for the truth, then he sought her out when no one else believed him. Everyone had abandoned him and she was the only one he could trust. That church scene cemented the ship for me...until the armory scene where it built a full on armada. The dialog, the eye contact, the tiny smiles. Her faith in him and his abilities lit the spark in him to believe, to accept his place in the universe because he does have something special in him. The quarter she left in the condor cemented that belief in himself when he tells Parangosky, "You have no idea what I can do".

But then they left us hanging with no resolution. I needed closure. I needed to make logical sense of it. I needed to fill in some of the gaps. So it was really a character exploration and the desire to tug on the thread they left hanging out there of "Could Talia be what helps in realize his full potential as a man? Could she course correct the meh love story created with Makee?" They gave us what they gave us in Season 2 and I set the groundwork to seek answers those questions through my interpretation of it. Then I answered them in Possibilities. I explored his journey to become the man he desired to be. It glared like an inferno when he responded to Halsey telling him he's not a machine with, "What am I, then? Don’t say human, because real people have lives. They have families…Possibilities."

Slightly related: in pretty recent dc canon, Slade and Talia do have a biological test tube baby together. his name is Respawn. I think neither Talia nor Slade knew about him though bc it was all Ra's al Ghul fuckery ?

Yeah Respawn, that poor little thing. You're correct, neither Talia nor Slade knew anything about him. - it's one of those thing where Ra's al Ghul goes "brilliant mastermind is 600+ year old and instead of doing anything which makes a lick of sense with his centuries of hindsight and experience of the world, he obsesses over people's genes".

Basically he spliced Talia's DNA with Slade's to replicate whatever gave him his meta-abilities, and since DC can't decide if Slade's abilities derive from his meta-gene, from the serum he was given or from both (hell, they barely can decide if Slade's hair is white because of the serum or because man's old), everything makes so little sense that somehow what Ra's al Ghul does ends up working, and he manages to create this test tube baby who indeed has both Talia and Slade's DNA, and the latter's meta-abilities.

But instead of doing anything meaningful with this kid, he keeps him locked up and tortures him (?), or uses him to get organs when Damian needs them (???), and doesn't even give him a name. Respawn picks out his own nickname, and he survives only because his healing factor keeps him alive despite all of the above, and somehow he also stays sane despite the years of isolation and hardcore physical abuse.

At some point he manages to run away and connect with Slade, and Slade *immediately* (and I mean after barely batting an eye) decides that this is his son and he will cherish him and protect him. And of course a couple of issues later Respawn gets brutally murdered right before Slade's eyes, because DC art directors are so competent and the only development they could think of was that of re-traumatizing Slade in the exact same way as it already happened with Grant (and with Joseph pre-reboot), making him lose a child brutally and by failing to protect him. Right before his eyes.

And so they also wasted a perfectly good character (Respawn I mean) which could have had an amazing plotline both with Slade and Rose & by himself, and a lot of potential for future development, just because they wanted the quick and easy drama of "child gets tortured for all his brief life for absolutely no reason, finally finds someone that wants to take care of him and dies a horrible death".

You can tell it didn't really work because not many people even know that Respawn exist, and those who know didn't get the time to truly grow fond of him since he's there for such a short time. And I bet you can also tell I'm pissed about it.

The Romance Novel Renaissance

God, what a time to be alive. How lucky are we to be young and here and now? To grow up and get to experience this?

Right now, we are living through a literary renaissance. A movement just as impactful, industry- and life-changing, and far-reaching as the beat generation, and one that would be recognized as such and taken as seriously, if only the authors and readers were primarily men and not women.

A young man can be a million things. A tortured poet, a starving artist, a dreamer, a hippie, an asshole. Brilliant, depressed, thoughtful, controversial, rude. He can also be nothing, if he chooses to, and a million excuses will be made for him. Young women, girls, can only be silly. Our books can only be ridiculous fantasy. Our characters can only be unrealistic and one-dimensional. Our movement, our time, can only be a footnote.

We don’t allow ourselves to enjoy things. Nothing can be corny, or weird, or niche, or fun. And nothing can be two things at once: both funny and serious. Nothing less than an unreadable classic can be meaningful.

Romance novels have been seen only as foolish escapism. As what the repressed housewife or the dowdy schoolmarm fill the spaces of their empty lives with. Romance novels are written and read by teenagers and adults, by social butterflys and introverts, by aspiring writers and by people who have no idea what they want to do, by everyone. Their characters are just as varied as the audience. We love them both because we can see ourselves in them and because we can see someone completely different.

And if it is escapism? So the fuck what?

What is so wrong about wanting a break from all of this? That’s exactly what books are meant to do, transport you, take you along with the characters, invite you into the world. And that is precisely what the talented artists of the romance novel renaissance are doing. Creating stories that are saccharine and hilarious and sexy and lighthearted and devastating and good. Well-written, quality work. Beautiful, moving novels that have changed literature and culture forever. Can we just leave women alone to read what they like?

Our books are at the top of the bestseller’s lists. Our masterpieces are displayed in the windows of every store. And I hope that soon our authors will have respect and our readers will have peace, long overdue and well-deserved.

Might as well jump into it, shall we?!

I really love how much action that this show has in it and throughout the episode as well.  I mean if you are going to have a show about being a cop, might as well make it as realist as possible. Calls like the ones that Talia and John were on is what real life officers respond to on a daily basis.  I haven’t watched many cop shows, but the ones that I have watched, this one is by far the most realistic portrayal of the police force!  As much action as this show has, it also has a sense of calmness as well (if that is the right word for it!) Hence the ending scene of our favorite trio on the beach.  

I really like the healthy balance of the work vs personal life of the main characters.  We see who they are while they are in uniform and on duty but let us get to know who they are and how they act when they do take their work belt and badge off.  We are getting to see more of that as each episode airs.

It’s good to see Tim in a uniform again, and I think everyone in the station feels the same way!!  As of this episode, we really don’t know what happened in Tim’s life that made him want to be a cop, but  he really was born to be one.  His looks, attitude, demeanor, it all screams “cop”, but in the best way.  I want to know so so much more about Tim’s life and what happened that made him choose this career path.

Who is Wade Grey?! I still don’t know!!! All we have seen of Grey so far is him catching attitude with Nolan. So to see him in a different light, while talking to a fellow cop that he likes and respects makes us start to warm up to him.  In this episode, we learn through his conversations with Tim that he has this whole past life of being in the force that not even some of his officers know about.  As they are learning, so are we and I feel that there is much more to know and like about Wade Grey, I can’t wait to find out!

Tim and Lucy back together and back on the patrol and why not start the day off with a ‘Tim Test’ because that’s what Tim does best and Lucy is quite receptive to the tests yet and especially this one.  Tim knew exactly what he was doing and all Lucy wanted to do was use the bathroom; but because of how brilliant Tim is as a T.O, no matter where you are as an officer, you can never have your guard down.  The ridicule is cut short when Tim receives a mysterious phone call.  We don’t know from him but it jolts him.  His demeanor instantly shifts, and not for the better.

Tim and Lucy end up in the hospital, as we find out it’s because of Isabel.  Tim becomes a shell of himself when it comes to Isabel.  This is the second time we see her on our screens and the effect that she has on Tim is palpable.  His voice cracks, the tears start to well up in his eyes, he is desperate and pleading.  His wife is in front of him yet she might as well be 10,000 miles away because she isn’t really “his wife” anymore at this point, is she.  

All that Tim has wanted for the past year is to find her and he finally did, but is it enough? Its obvious that she didn’t want to be found so how is Tim feeling about that?  His frustration is growing by the second hence his fist through the wall.  

I think Lucy is justified in her anger towards Tim and in the situations that he has been putting her in this episode/day.  Tim is spiraling, hard and fast.  He is beyond frustrated with his current situation with Isabel and is taking it out and train it too far with the biker gang that they respond too.  Lucy is left helpless to just watch Tim beat these guys while simultaneously getting beaten himself.  This is not the T.O that she originally had and her hands are tied until Lucy offers to help Isabel instead of Tim because she knows it’s the best thing that she can do for him in that moment. Tim has been having an inner crisis this entire episode and Lucy sees it.  Tim wants his wife back.

Lucy went into the apartment for Tim to help Isabel but in hindsight, is Isabel the one that helped Lucy?  Isabel starts to give Lucy a small bit of history between Tim and herself and their relationship.  This new info is just the beginning for the friendship that is to come between Tim and Lucy; but it also makes Lucy start to see Tim in a different light…maybe as an actual person and not just her hardass T.O.

The silence in the car between them is deafening.  This is the first time that we see Tim opening up to Lucy about his personal life and Lucy is very receptive to it as well. There is so much that is wanted to be said when Lucy gets back in the car yet what really is there to say except for the fact that maybe Lucy is exactly the person that Tim needed to enter his life in this exact moment for Tim to start becoming himself again.  Tim is genuinely thankful for Lucy and in what she just did for him.

If Talia was good for one thing this season it was spitting the facts regarding being a cop. Out of the three T.O, I believe Talia has been the most insightful regarding the actual teachings of an officer.  A patrol police officer is more than just patrolling, it is about reading people and situations, the protocols and the black & white of the job.  I like the way she teaches all of that to Nolan.  We see it lacking in the teachings of Tim and Angela, that’s okay because it will all eventually come full circle.  Nolan is trying to see the good in everyone whereas Talia knows better.  Yes she’s human and feels for people, but at the end of the day she’s there to do the job.  Nolan is still very green to being an officer. This is the very first time he’s being held by gunpoint by a criminal.  His first instinct is to talk her down and it works because Talia catches her off guard and tases her.  John has tried to see the good in every single person in this episode whereas Talia sees the bad in them.  

As of this episode, we still aren’t getting a lot from Jackson and Angela; which is fine because I know their moments are coming.  We have insight into Lucy and John but not so much from Jackson yet.  The Angela and Jackson scenes almost feel as if they are scene fillers and an afterthought.  I want to know more about the both of them, give me something! I just don’t feel like anything I have to say about them right now is good enough for me to do a deep dive about it.  I just feel like the conversations were very fluff filled and nothing very deep and personal.

The roll call scenes throughout these first few episodes and in this one are cool to see.  It makes you wonder if this is what actually happens in the beginning of the work day and through it as well in a real life precinct.  It’s a nice way of having everyone in the same room at the same time, while also still showing the individual storylines happening as well for all of our favorite characters!

Episode Rating: 8/10.  This episode started to show the cracks in Tim’s personal life, which is exactly what we all needed to see.  The lack of Angela and Jackson is getting to me, I really want to know more about both of them in their personal and professional lives.

Okay, I finally decided to get all my thoughts about 2015 RTC (14/02/2015) into a sort of comprehensive, semi chronological list.

. We already had a Tragic Fact recording, but it's nice to have options. Also they REALLY want you to know they'll be damned if they're working at the mall

. I love Sarah Jane Peltzer's voice

. U.R.A.N.I.U.M is nice, but, God it's hard to hear the lyrics

. According to Kholby, Noel canonically would've written "bisexual werewolf stories", and I just think Noel's terrible writing should be focused on more in fanworks

. Noel's Lament is essentially the same, but it was the version where Monique has a kid. I get why they cut it

. Ocean's dad being left-wing and her mum being right-wing makes for a really interesting conflict, and contextualises "Some of us are left-wing, some of us are right wing..."

. The full version of Play To Win is so different to how imagined it. (And pretty ableist, so yikes) Very catchy though. And I love Rielle Braid.

NBD just crying over Action Comics 1060 (in a good way but also a sad way because DC is being VERY DUMB and ending PKJ’s run in favor of a Jason Aaron Bizarro filler arc ohhhhhh how I weep bitter tears of frustration)

…Anyways, spoilers!

So 1060 is the penultimate installment of PKJ’s (stellar, spectacular, phenomenal, brilliant, top-tier) run on Action Comics and I just want to applaud him—for a lot of things, really, but in *this* specific case, I wanna stand and cheer because he’s making it EXTREMELY CLEAR that the twins (who are not actually twins) are in fact, Clark’s kids. No question, no ambiguity; Otho calls him papa, Clark refers to her as his daughter, and he’s willing to travel through LITERAL HELL to get her back.

It’s entirely possible that future writers will try to get rid of these kids, but I appreciate that PKJ has made it *very* difficult for them. XD Any retcon they’d come up with would be so messy. (Of course, saying this, I realize that the more depressingly realistic outcome here isn’t that writers actively try to erase them, but rather, will probably sideline/ignore them, trot them out for generic precocious kids stuff every now and then, and wait for the next line-wide reboot to ‘streamline’ Clark aka toss out anything mildly interesting and/or additive to Clark’s corner of the DCU.)

Right. Sorry. Salty tangent. XD

So anyways here’s some panels that tugged on my ‘Aunt Kara’ heartstrings.

There’s also a really great page wherein Kara gets Osul to calm down by reminding him of a…I think Phaelosian legend? Or possibly Kryptonian, I know she was trying to find stuff for them in a previous issue.

(Went back and it’s actually the House of Ra fable; the House of El’s is ‘Nightwing and Flamebird’, Ra’s is ‘Red Son and Starchild’.)

I love that Lois lets Kara and Osul have that moment, that space; I maintain that while Clark has a better handle on getting what the kids went through on Warworld given that he was there, and Lois obviously has more experience with raising kids that have unique needs thanks to Jon being half alien, but *Kara* is more readily equipped to sympathize with Otho and Osul’s struggles with transitioning to Earth life, based on her current, canon characterization. (Which is, uhhhh…Woman of Tomorrow and alsoooooo…Rebirth? Maybe? WoT is def canon, the recent SG one shot visually referenced Kara’s departure from Argo.) But I digress!

Speaking of the kids’ struggles…Otho is Going Through It. The stuff with Sister Shadow (AKA Norah Stone AKA evil daughter of an alt universe Bruce and Talia) trying to tempt her to the dark side by preying on her trauma/difficulty adapting to her new home and revealing a future, tyrannical version of herself is some wonderfully juicy character work, both from the perspective of fleshing out Otho AND being additive to Superman’s roster of villains; that’s something I love about PKJ’s approach to world building overall. Yes, he’s revamped some of Superman’s established bad guys (Metallo, Mongul) but he’s also added awesome new foes, like Norah Stone, and Pyrrhos.

I really hope DC lets him do like. A mini series on his original Kryptonian/House of El characters. I would honestly love to read about all these cool new, additive elements, than deal with the Luthor cameo fest over in Superman rn. XD

In conclusion: DC once again shying away from anything interesting and new with Superman in favor of the safe status quo. -_- I mean, I hope I’m wrong. I hope the new ‘Superman Superstars’ opt to build on the solid foundation PKJ has set up. But given what happened with Bendis? Creators’ absolute refusal to incorporate any of the canon he built, because they knew DC would walk it back ASAP? (And the Superman group editor openly admitting that was his number one priority as soon as he GOT THE JOB???) Just shows a complete lack of faith in your creators, and doesn’t really give me too much hope for one of the few remaining titles I look forward to each month.

…but hey, hopefully Marilyn Moonlight will be neat??? XD
