To encapsulate the romance of this theme we looked to the pre-Raphaelites, who reinvigorated interests in classic British folklore in beautiful painted form, with flowing fabrics and unconventionally loose waistlines. We have imbued a sense of medieval dress in our shape design by taking bodice shapes and panelling details from armour and doublets, with gathered puff sleeves to create this iconic whimsical silhouette.'

If you don't mind my hopping in, regarding caves specifically there are lots of caves, caverns and mines with supernatural lore around them in the UK. Off the top of my head, there's:

The Wookey Hole Caves - a stalagmite in the caves is said to be the remains of a witch who was turned to stone by a monk.*

Mother Shipton's Cave - Not technically a "witch cave", but this cave is supposed to be the birthplace of soothsayer Mother Shipton. It also has a spring that petrifies items dipped into it, which is pretty cool all on its own. **

I'm tacking on the Crank Caverns as an honorary mention, too, but I don't think they necessarily warrant a place on the list. The Crank Caverns (aka the Rainford Delph Quarry) come with some grim tales attached, although ymmv on how much these tales actually count as folklore. At some point in the late 18th century, some children went missing in the caves; the one who returned told stories of small, bearded men and caverns littered with human bones. Hence the local legends that there are vicious dwarves living in the caves. Further investigation apparently found a mysterious cathedral deep in the caves, and the investigators reported hearing voices and feeling like they were watched. These caves were somehow sealed up after the investigations, and are no longer open to the public due to increasing structural instability and collapses.

You've also got the folklore motif of the King under the mountain – tales of a king or hero who "sleep" underground or inside a hill/mountain. Similar to this (sometimes occurring in the same tale) is the sleeping army motif, such as the army of knights that apparently slumbers leaderless at Alderley Edge, Cheshire, England. King Arthur is the most prevalent example of the sleeping king, but there's loads from around the world featuring mythical, legendary and historical figures alike. The Wikipedia page on this topic is a good starting point. In the same vein, an unnamed giant is supposed to be sleeping beneath Plumlumon in Wales and lore has it that Mount Snowdon is actually the burial place of a giant who was killed by Arthur and his knights.

If I remember correctly, bugganes from Manx folklore live in caves. Or at least, I know that the one who haunted St Trinians was said to live "in the mountain", and there was another who lived in a cave by the sea. Regardless, the connection's there.

*I remember a similar tale from a cave in Iceland when I visited in 2019, except it was a troll who'd been turned to stone instead of a witch. I can't for the life of me remember what the cave was called though bc I didn't record it in my travel notebook >:(

** Caves in general tend to house (or were the birthplace of) various oracles, soothsayers and prophets, which I always find amusing. Let the oracles exist in their natural habitats in peace!!

In Chinese and Japanese folklore I sometimes come across underground palaces belonging to supernatural or divine beings. But they are also fond of placing these "in the mountains", often only accessible through a cavern, but not actually underground, just hidden.

Finding one of these places, while risky, is usually a good thing in folklore. The protagonist finds help there, treasure, or even a spouse.

Of course there are also stories about caves or underground places that house a specific creature. Like the elephant hunting serpent the Grootslang dwelling in their diamond cave, or the (Tommy)Knockers inhabiting mines who both help and hinder the miners, or the basilisk who prefers to stay in the dark.

I'm sure there are many more examples but these are the ones that come to mind!
