Up there with my favourite things/experiences that happened because of Käärijä is definitely that my confidence had increased to the point that I felt brave enough to do things I never in my life thought I'd do be it small things like actually looking at myself nude and taking in how my body looks without being disgusted to medium sized risks like walking on stage performing a cover of a finnish song in costume and full choreo and keep performing it time and time again to every karaoke event I go to, to the big one being travelling alone for the first time ever meeting up with fellow kääryleet at the stockholm and berlin shows.

Btw that's another thing that is amongst my favourite things about Käärijä: the freaking fandom is amazing, I love you wonderfully kind, talented, gorgeous individuals with all my heart and I am so happy I got to meet some of you in person <33

Anything new you learned about yourself this year and would like to share?

I learned that I seem pretty talented with mascara because the amount of time I have had professionals doubting whether I've started t or not is hilarious x'D

Also I didn't thought my hair was able to be green (since the only other time I tried dyeing it it faded out quickly) - I was wrong x'D

Thirdly I've learned that I am actually okay with getting tattooed? Like I hate needles but the tattoo needle doesn't bother me? True, it stings and can be uncomfortable but I actually had a stronger reaction to getting a drop in my arm for the pre-op baseline tests in October than at both my tattoo appointments x'D

What things/experiences are you looking forward to in the new year?

I am looking forward to going to Finland/Helsinki in March and May :'D To see the mural and Vantaa, to live in the kääbnb, to watch JO live possibly dressed as häärijä and then later watch the man himself live in May :'D

Oh and I am looking forward to meeting baby boos and kääryleet in the queue again with more stickers to gift and hopefully some keychains to JO if I am lucky enough to meet them in Malmö (where I have early access) and then in return if I am lucky (again) get Bojan to write 'Are You' so I can that tattooed

Watch me ramble about finnish culture and language again

One finnish phrase I like a lot is:

"Se ei ole mistään kotoisin"

Meaning: Worthless, insignificant, " it's not worth the paper it's written on."

Literal translation: It is not from anywhere

There's also possible variations to this. You can ask "Onko se mistään kotoisin?" (Is it from anywhere?) to ask if something is worth it or if it is good.

From Kotus' website I also found a variation of saying "olla jostakin kotoisin" (be from somewhere) to mean talent or excelency in something. "Hän oli vähän kaikista kotosin" = Hän (he/she) was good a little bit in everything. (literal translation: Hän was from everywhere a little bit.)

I like this saying because it is fun expression. I personally also like to use it to mean that something has no personality (because if it has personality it wouldn't feel homeless but like it was from somewhere)

Another reason is that it's an examble of finnish culture being hidden in plain sight in the language we use: The finnish regional loyalty. I talk about this behind the cut.

(hate to use Käärijä as an examble again but a good examble of regional loyalty and city rivalry was when he, a Vantaa man called people of Espoo "rich bastards from Espoo" multible times while having a gig there. Vantaa and Espoo are neighbour cities but completely different in their profiles: Rich/happy Espoo and poor/dirty Vantaa.)

Roman Schatz, a german-born finish author who has been living in Finland since the 1980s, writes about this as well in his book From Finland with love / Suomesta, Rakkaudella. * His observation actually made me pay attention to this phrase. It has been a while since I read this book, but I think Schatz wrote that finnish people are obsessed about where some one is from and it is visible in the sayign "olla mistään kotoisin".

I have witnessed this in my own life as well, because Finns love making fun of their neighbouring regions and cities and mocking them. (Turku and Vantaa especially get a lof ot hate in my experience). Stand up comedians often make jokes about the citizens of certain cities/municipalities and there is even a kinda popular tv game show "Stadi vastaan Lande" (Stadi aka the City (Helsinki) against the countryside (rest of Finland outside Ring III motorway and capital city region) Where teams from both the capital city area, and the "lande" answer trivia questions about the area they are not from. The whole show rests on the competitiveness and friendly bickering between stadi and lande.

Your own hometown is always the best and people often ask where are you from and you are proud of being from Savo region for examle. This also means that when there's a punch of finns from different parts of the country we become competitive and if there is rivalry between the cities (and there are many of those) dissing is curanteed to ensue.

*. In his book, Schatz writes about his observations about Finland and Finns and our culture in a humoristic, almost complaining tone. I really recommend this book for all you suomeaboos out there because the printed book has both the original engoish edition and on the flip side the finnish translation and that is propably helpfull with learning finnish s well. Maybe it is not the deebest posible insight, but at the time of reading the book I felt like he was able to be both hilarious and shed light into what Finland and finnish people are like.

A Worthy Successor to Malaysian Legend Lee Chong Wei

Badminton fans consider Lee Zii Jia as the next Lee Chong Wei. He has all the potential, talent, and skill to become the next badminton champion. He has a mantra, “Dare to Dream”. He says, “What I am trying to show them (the youth) is, I hope that they can dare to dream (of) whatever they want to become, and then decide to become (it) one day.”

Born in Alor Setar, Lee Zii Jia’s parents were former international basketball players. His parents introduced him to badminton at the young age of six. Considering his potential and performance in under-12 competitions, the Bukit Jalil Sports School quickly selected him.

Lee Zii Jia began his career with the Junior Championship in the 2015 Perak and Selangor Badminton Open tournament. His achievement secured him a seat at the big table. In the following year, he won a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships. In 2017, Lee won his first senior title at the Polish International Tournament.

2018 was a memorable year for the Malaysian player because he won his first BWF World Tour title against Riichi Takeshita. His victory brought happiness across Malaysia because Lee became the only player other than Lee Chong Wei to win a BWF title since 2013. Lee Zii Jia also reached the finals of the Korean Masters in the same year.

In August 2019, Lee reached the semi-finals of the Thailand Open. He secured the world No. 11 in the BWF World rankings and ended the year on a high with a gold medal in the men’s singles tournament at the SEA Games. He also helped the national men's team win the silver medal at the SEA Games.

Lee Zii Jia was a semi-finalist in the 2020 Malaysian Masters. Under his captaincy, the team won a silver medal at the Asian Team Championships. Owing to his incredible performance at the All England Open in 2020, he entered the coveted list of the top 10 badminton players.

Lee won his first-ever Super 1000 tournament at the 2021 All England Open Championship by defeating world no. 1 player and defending champion Viktor Axelsen.

When Lee decided to quit the national badminton team in January 2022, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) banned him for two years. However, the ban was lifted quickly in the same month. In May 2022, Lee won the Badminton Asia Championships and BWF World Tour Super 500 title at the Thailand Open. He also reached the final of the Denmark Open against Chinese shuttler Shi Yuqi.

In 2023, Lee was part of the Malaysian team that won the bronze medal at the Sudirman Cup. He had decided to take a break from badminton in 2023 and only returned to competing in July with the 2023 Korea Open. He ended his drought by winning the 2023 Arctic Open against another Malaysian player Ng Tze Yong.

Did you know Dallas Stars’ John Klinberg used to play Liiga?

The Swedish defenseman was acquired to Jokerit in 2011-12 by their former GM Jarmo Kekäläinen (now Columbus), after seeing him play in SHL’s Frölunda. Unfortunately for Klingberg, his Liiga career only lasted for 20 games, during which he made 1+2 points. Klingberg was also sent down to the Mestis affliate Kiekko-Vantaa for 6 games.

Kekäläinen had acquired Klingberg after thinking he was a promising and talented young player, but his actions in Liiga were far from that. Instead Finnish hockey fans saw an insecure youngster, who barely could even stay on his two feet. At that time no one probably would have believe that Klingberg would ever be playing in NHL someday, but how far he has come from those days. Klinbgerg himself recalls the time as a hard period in his life, that forced him to grow up and learn.

Even with such short lived Liiga career, he was able to join Liiga’s All-Stars game last August. He said he was more than happy to take a part in charity game and giving back to the community, and of course to hang out with his fellow (Finnish) Dallas Stars team mates in the process.
