Autumn smiles secretly to herself as she turns to the next page in her book; a biography of medieval witch Irma Morgason. She has a project on it for history but this time they were allowed to pick their subject, and the blonde finds that she actually rather enjoys getting to know the renowned witch.
It also helps that Talbott sits directly beside her, his own book propped on his knee as he studies for his own project.
It has long since become routine for them. Studying. In fact, Talbott has once commented that he even puts it in his schedule, seeing as studying of this such attentive kind is unfortunately far from a commonplace for the young cursebreaker. It had made her smile at the time, and even still manages to do so whenever she thinks of it.
Today was different though. Today, Talbott had been noticeably fidgety, something very uncharacteristic for the Ravenclaw. She’s even noticed that he has made significantly less progress in his book than she.
Despite the closeness and intimacy of the moment, this makes Autumn frown.
“Talbott,” She does her best to whisper after a while, closing her book and diligently saving the page. “Something’s wrong.”
He looks up to her and for a moment she thinks he will try to argue, even opens his mouth to do so, but he closes it quickly. With a pensive shake of his head, his brows pinch together slightly in thoughtfulness before he, too, sighs and shuts his book.
“You’re right,” He says in that matter-of-fact tone that only he can manage. “There’s...well, there’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you.”
Autumn tries not to frown further in confusion. “Sure.”
Talbott chews anxiously on her lower lip, an action she has never seen him perform before. It strikes her here that whatever it is he wishes to say, it certainly is not easy for him. What could it be?
Clearing his throat, Talbott exhales sharply. “As you know, a certain holiday is coming up soon.”
“Valentine’s Day.” Autumn answers simply.
He seems to hesitate, but nods his confirmation. “Yes. And, while I’ve never been overly fond of this holiday in the past...I suppose I’ve been giving it more consideration this year.”
Autumn gulps, her pulse jumping. “Oh?”
“I guess this year...I actually have someone I want to spend it with,” His eyes jump back to hers now from where they had been trained somewhere off behind her shoulder. And, after checking to make sure the gesture was okay with her, ventures a hand out to grab hers sitting on her knee. “Autumn, would you maybe like..to be my valentine this year?”
Her cheeks flush deeply and Autumn can feel the way her lips split to curl into a wide grin, her cheeks hurting from the strain. Talbott seems to relax slightly at this though his posture remains stern and straight.
“Yes!” Autumn gasps out in a giggle, earning her some harsh glares and a chorus of ‘shhhh’ from her peers. She apologizes quietly and then turns back to Talbott—a look of fierce endearment in his eyes—with her barely contained smile. “Yes,” She whispers again. “I’d love to be your valentine.”
The smile he gives her in return she’s sure could rival the sun.

8. “i stayed at the school over break and someone has been giving me presents and i think they’re following the 12 days of christmas song wHERE ON EARTH DID THEY GET SEVEN SWANS”
Tumblr media
Just to be clear, he really did not mean to take it this far.
It started out simple enough, a mere coincidence really. He and Autumn had taken a walk at the start of December, taking a break from all the duress of school when they had come across a pear tree that had yet to wilt entirely by the coming winter. Autumn had smiled and expressed her lament for the dying of all the foliage that comes with the holiday season when a bird flew over.
Now, Talbott had no idea what kind of bird it was, it’s not like he’d ever gone bird watching, but when it landed on the pear tree, a soft gasp came from her and another smile broke out across her lips.
“No way,” She exclaimed in a bit of amused disbelief. “It’s a partridge in a pear tree...”
At his apparent confusion, Autumn went on to explain the muggle holiday song she’d heard from Penny that described an outrageous twelve days full of even more outrageous gifts.
He’d scoffed at the idea at the time. For who would ever go through such efforts? This denial, Talbott is sure, triggered a curious chain of events.
The next day saw Talbott in the owlry, tending and accompanying the owls and occasional other avian guests as he often does, when two particular doves appeared. He’d never seen them before and shrugged off the confusion. So long as they don’t bother him.
But then Autumn had come in, spotted the doves, and they had a quick laugh about the likelihood of fulfilling the first two days of the holiday song. Surely, he had thought, the coincidences end here.
They did not.
It was only after they had stumbled upon three French hens and four calling birds that Talbott garnered an idea.
He’s not sure what it was that possessed him to do such a thing. Maybe it was the frown on her lips the next day when no five golden rings appeared. Or perhaps it was the quiet disappointment that should not have room on her face that deserved only smiles when she found none for the rest of the week either. Or, in all honesty, it could be the fact that Talbott was admittedly as smitten as a schoolboy about one particular curse-breaker and didn’t quite know what to do about that otherwise.
To say she had brightened when five plain, and discounted golden rings—thank you, jae kim—were left at her door would be an unforgivable understatement.
It pushed him to continue the ruse, no matter how outlandish. Her smile was contagious and he found himself needing to see it as often as possible.
A secret admirer, Tonks had chuckled one evening at the Three Broomsticks, how charming.
Currently, Talbott tries to appear unbothered as the only other Ravenclaw student to stay over the holidays makes to join him in the common room.
Her door creaks open, alerting him to her presence and he hears a yawn rip from her throat as she gently pads into the usually open space—
“Oh. Merlin’s. Beard.”
—usually.
“How did this happen?!” Autumn balks, her eyes wide and round like saucers as she takes in the seven miniature swans—curtesy of reducio— swimming in a little kiddy pool, right in the center of the common room.
Talbott smirks behind his copy of the Daily Prophet.
“I was going to ask you the same question,” Talbott sighs, his mask of neutral expression in place, folding up the prophet and setting it in his lap. “How did they get here?”
Autumn’s jaw drops and the corners of his lips twitch upward. “You think I did this?”
He shrugs, nonchalant. “I think that you’re the only Ravenclaw here that cares about that song.”
“Talbott Winger, this was not me!”
With her arms crossed and her lips fighting hard not to break into a grin, Talbott concedes and allows himself one in return. “Alright, I believe you.”
“Thank you.”
“Still doesn’t explain how they got here, though.”
Looking around, her eyes darting from place to place, swan to swan, Autumn smiles. Her eyes taken over with mirth and excitement as she shrugs.
Talbott hopes she can’t see the faint flush on his cheeks at the sight.
“Perhaps some mysteries are better left unsolved.”
He smiles, though this time it does not reach his eyes. He nods in agreement as Autumn reaches for his hand to take them down to the Great Hall for breakfast.
Yes, he thinks, perhaps they are.

this is a tough choice bc they're all good prompts nggghh lez just say,,, 🏠 with my mains: autumn and birb boi talbott? 😗👉👈
🏠 – coming over
*thought I would mention that this request in particular heavily contains hcs of mine based on talbott’s living situation which you can find here if you’re confused. if you don’t like this you’re always welcome to request something else. thank you <3

Talbott stops them at his door.
It’s nothing she hasn’t necessarily seen before. Most wizarding neighborhoods outside of the more populated muggle cities tend to be more spread out. Talbott’s house is no different. Two of his neighbors are visible from the front porch, but it’d probably take a strong set of lungs to be heard from the same spot. His house, likewise, is rather tucked away from any hustle and bustle, idle and serene in the almost suburban countryside.
“Are you sure you don’t mind?” Talbott asks for probably the third time that week, his hand hesitating on the door knob. “Karli and Somer aren’t the friendliest of sorts.”
Autumn sighs, placing her hand over his. “To be fair, Tal, neither are you.”
The teen snorts in agreement, though he still seems uncertain. “Yeah, must be a family trait.”
“Whatever the case, I’m sure it’ll be fine. You said they mostly leave you to your own devices anyway, right?” She tries to reason.
“Well, yes I suppose,” He concedes, but a slight blush climbs up his cheeks and he looks away bashfully. “...but I’ve never brought anyone over before so...”
“New territory?” She supplies helpfully.
Talbott nods. “Yeah.”
Autumn smiles, leaning forward to give his cheek a quick peck. “Don’t worry. I’m sure everyone will be on their best behavior.”
“I hope so.”
And with that, and nothing more to say, Talbott pushes open the door and they cross the threshold into a quaint, but also very clean house. From first glance, it seems to have a very open floor plan and most of the furniture that catches her eye looks as though made from wood. But she also notices that the walls look starkly empty and bare of any sort of personal touch. No paintings, no photos, no knickknacks of any sort.
Autumn frowns slightly at the observation, but doesn’t have time to think on it further as they’re greeted quickly by a rather large figure hanging in the kitchen.
He’s...tall. Broad. He stands strongly like a statue in his place, his thick arms crossed over his chest. Unlike Talbott’s, his hair is messy and a bit longer in the back but also a familiar shade of hazelnut brown. His eyes also remind her of Talbott’s in intensity, but instead they glitter a pretty and vivid green.
“You must be Autumn,” The man says and she nods politely, her lips forming a thin line beneath the stranger’s watchful eye. “Talbott’s...” His eyes flicker over to his cousin. “...friend?”
“Autumn van Buren,” She responds in kind, trying her best to maintain confident eye contact. “Nice to meet you...”
“Somer,” Talbott answers cordially, already focusing on storing away Autumn’s bag in his room and that’s when she notices a suspiciously large pile of blankets on their couch. “That one is Somer.”
“Tal didn’t mention us?” The large man asks with a slight smirk but his eyes don’t shine with the mirth his tone suggests. “I’m hurt.”
“He did,” Autumn assures hurriedly as Talbott comes back to join them in the kitchen. “It’s just nice to be able to place a face to the name is all.”
Somer grins at her lazily like he knows not to believe her but is too well-mannered to object. He checks the clock behind him and turns back to address Talbott. “Karli is still in London at the moment but she’ll be back soon. I got some work to do but you guys have fun. Let me know if you need anything.”
“We will.” Talbott chirps as though mechanically and angles her over to what looks to be their fairly large living room.
Somer disappears down a long hallway and Autumn turns to Talbott with a smile. “See? He wasn’t so bad.”
Talbott smiles back and this time he seems nearly convinced. “No, I guess he’s not.”
That isn’t exactly what she said but she’s not going to point that out.
Then he groans but the corner of his mouth belies his real amusement. “Just wait until you meet Karli though. Out of the three of us, she can be a real piece of work.”
Autumn laughs and decides she can’t wait to.
