And then I found my writing wanting. I have never been this out of words. Choreographing my speech faculties to produce the sounds that may describe this realm IS simply impossible; my mind is stomped for words as though I am pushed on a cold cement wall. It is simply just unworkable with my current state. Fortunately, I still got my wits and as I could remember, I saw three entities. Two of them we know much about—the ibis-head Thoth, and the possessor of the winged items Hermes. The first one who appeared was rather like me but didn’t know who. Upon later considerations, I reckon that the it was him who bound the trio, for without him, I wouldn’t have figured out “what” they are.
He was the gakit operator Manduyapit. And the three of them, deities of knowledge, eloquence, communication, language, and inter-realm travel. such psychopomp trifecta.
I asked them, “Am I dead, Sirs?”
They looked at me slowly, at the same time. “We are Sir, if you like to use that honorific. And yes, you are dead.”
“How did I die?” I asked them. “How about my kids?”
It was Thoth who answered, “Your kids will become adults and shall die too.”
I did not know if I should be consoled with that thought. For a moment, I realized that I was being egoistic to declare concern towards my kids. They will be whatever they become with or without me. At that instant, Thoth smirked. He seemed to know what I was thinking. They know.
“Are we going to a quay, Sir? For the ferry?”
“No.” It was Hermes. “Far from that. We’re going to THE Library. It's not far from here. And there's no ferry for you.”
"No ferry for me?" I asked him. "Ani gyod ko ka unworthy?"
“Dong,” It was Manduyapit, tapping his pen on my shoulder. "Ayaw kaayog i-feel. Tudluan ra ka namo musuwat.”

What if Art Lived: usa ka pasalamat
Tumblr media
Wala man kay immediate nga benefit ani as far as kwarta is concerned, unless og hasta na gyod nimong sikata. Maong mumugna na sila bisan way kwartahay. Kini maoy naka-flip para sa kadaghanan. Sakto man sad sila.
Ganahan sad kaha silag art? What if art lived?—sa inyoha nga mga biktima, kining salidaha ra inatawon sa among love letter.
Legit totoo.

City High’s “Served” and the dearth of pens in Mindanao
Tumblr media
𝑺𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒆𝒅 (2020) is an art installation by the Arts & Design and SPA Visual Arts students of Davao City National High School. This is currently displayed in Malayan Colleges Of Mindanao, Matina, Davao City, as part of the ongoing Mindanao Art Fair 2020.
This piece is a manifestation of both the improving strength of the Mindanao visual art scene and the glaring dearth of Mindanawons who write about it.
While there are articles that talk about art events, mostly, if not all, are concerned in publicity (nothing is wrong with this, and such efforts are absolutely necessary), I think, nonetheless, that it should be every Mindanawon's inclination to write about events in Mindanao (perhaps on social media), not only in terms of pleasantries and photo ops, but also in terms of critical engagement.
What this means is that, perhaps it would help us all make better sense of our being Mindanawon if we write about how Mindanawon artworks, such as this, make us feel and think as a Mindanawon.*
And so with that, I 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍 that served has tricked me.
In their art statement, the artists declare that they used "some newly purchased pens" for the purpose of the installation. But if viewed closely, it seemed to me that most, if not all, of the pens were shiny and unscratched—they all looked new.
But I 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌 that this goes beyond simple word misuse.
It seemed to me that the intention of purchasing pens is to control the colors of the actual installation. And the intention of controlling the colors is to pull off the ethnic patterns on the body of the giant pens so that they appear Mindanawon.
As a Bisaya settler, who's lived in Mindanao my entire life but has no traditional ethnolinguistic roots, where am I in this Mindanawon work?
If the ethnic patterns work in the narrative and context of the artwork, it's good; but if it's just there for the sole purpose of evoking local color, that's tokenism.
I think the patterns do not work, and the intention to put them has only stifled the greater social realist potential of the installation—the reality that the pandemic has possibly rendered pens "immaterial" (in the light of online meetings and QR codes), and that pens, with their almost expendable nature, symbolize us in the midst of the pandemic—vulnerable, and if infected—in the words of the artwork's statement—"decommissioned."
If we write and post more about how Mindanao visual arts make us feel and think, we may well be guiding Mindanawon artists in gauging how Mindanawons would react in their works, rendering Mindanao arts a dynamic intellectual exchange between creators and audience.
Mindanao art fair 2020: Living Art in A New Landscape, organized by Lawig Diwa Foundation Inc. is still on exhibition in MCM until 8 November 2020 in appointment basis. Schedule your visit now on the MinArt Facebook page.

𝐁𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐁𝐚𝐝𝐣𝐚𝐨 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝-𝟏𝟗

𝘼𝘾𝙌𝙐𝙄𝙍𝙀𝘿 𝘿𝙄𝙍𝙏
We received it, too, sent by some of our friends and relatives. We don't like it. And we are sickened by it.
𝙒𝙀𝙏 𝙃𝘼𝙉𝘿𝙎 𝙒𝙄𝙏𝙃 𝘾𝙇𝙀𝘼𝙉 𝙒𝘼𝙏𝙀𝙍
We thank and understand the concern that probably motivated the forwarders of this message but we cannot stand it at the expense of the Badjaos.
𝙐𝙎𝙀 𝙎𝙊𝘼𝙋. 𝙍𝙐𝘽 𝘼𝙇𝙇 𝘾𝙊𝙍𝙉𝙀𝙍𝙎 𝙊𝙁 𝙃𝘼𝙉𝘿𝙎. 𝙒𝘼𝙎𝙃 𝙁𝙊𝙍 𝘼𝙏 𝙇𝙀𝘼𝙎𝙏 20 𝙎𝙀𝘾𝙊𝙉𝘿𝙎
This is sickening in several ways. Come and let's disinfect using the Critical Thinking soap:
1. 𝘗𝘭𝘴 𝘱𝘮 𝘴𝘢 𝘪𝘯𝘺𝘶 𝘮𝘨𝘢 𝘬𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘢.. 𝘓𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘵 𝘯𝘪..
First, when do we say that something is "legit"? Critical thinking tells us that it should have a proper and credible source, cited within the text. None is found in this chain message. What if this was merely sent by some random guy who just hates the Badjaos?
2. 𝘗𝘢𝘨𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘢𝘺 𝘮𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘨 𝘣𝘢𝘥𝘫𝘢𝘰 𝘴𝘢 𝘥𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘯..𝘬𝘺 𝘴 𝘣𝘳𝘨𝘺 23𝘤 𝘯𝘢𝘺 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 . . .
Second, it assumes that ALL Badjaos come from Brgy 23-C. This is wrong since Badjaos are scattered in Davao City. While they are concentrated in some areas, the Badjao that you might meet may not come from Brgy 23-C, and may not be covid-19 positive.
Being a Badjao doesn't equate to being positive with covid-19.
3. 𝘬𝘺 𝘯𝘢𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘬 𝘴 𝘣𝘢𝘥𝘫𝘢𝘰 𝘯𝘢 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦. 𝘕𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘺.𝘵𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘢𝘮𝘢 𝘯𝘢 𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘯𝘢
Third, it adds insult to injury. Assuming that this is factual, namatayan na gane ato pa gyod gibasol. Are we seeing how heartless this is?
4. 𝘱𝘳𝘶 𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘢𝘯𝘢 𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘢𝘵 𝘯𝘢𝘨 𝘣𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘬𝘢 𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘢 𝘬𝘢𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘰 𝘢𝘴𝘢 𝘱𝘢𝘥𝘶𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨.𝘵𝘢𝘴 𝘯𝘢𝘢 𝘱𝘢𝘺 𝘪𝘴𝘢 𝘬𝘢 𝘭𝘢𝘬𝘪 𝘨𝘪𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘵𝘢 𝘱𝘢.𝘯𝘢𝘨 𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘶𝘺 𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘶𝘺
Badjaos are culturally nautical and itinerant people. Meaning, being at sea and travelling from place to place is in their normal. It's as normal to us, non-Badjaos, as buying food in the market.
For them, whose economic opportunities remain unstable—𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘣𝘺 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘨𝘦—maybe we have to tone or judgments down because the father must have been away because he felt the need to provide for his wife and to pay for the ensuing bills in the wake of his child's death.
Unless he is held down, or chained, a father will not stand to remain at home, seeing that his family has nothing to eat.
Also, "laruylaruy" in Binisaya means to wander aimlessly. In other words, "suroy-suroy." Very poor choice of words to say the least.
5. 𝘉𝘶𝘴𝘢 . . . 𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘶 𝘴𝘢 𝘮𝘨𝘢 𝘣𝘢𝘥𝘫𝘢𝘰..𝘬𝘺 𝘨𝘢𝘩𝘪 𝘬𝘢𝘺𝘶 𝘶𝘭𝘰 𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪 𝘬𝘢𝘴𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘵..
Again, 𝗕𝗘𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔 𝗕𝗔𝗗𝗝𝗔𝗢 𝗗𝗢𝗘𝗦𝗡'𝗧 𝗘𝗤𝗨𝗔𝗧𝗘 𝗧𝗢 𝗕𝗘𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗖𝗢𝗩𝗜𝗗-𝟭𝟵 𝗣𝗢𝗦𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘.
We, in Talaria Com-Arts Guild, have interacted with some Badjaos in and outside their communities, and have been wearing, dancing, and appreciating their culture. Mao ni among natun-an:
If anything, kita ang wala kasabot nila.
𝙍𝙄𝙉𝙎𝙀
If we really think this through, forwarding this message only perpetuates hate and discrimination towards Badjaos.
This message encourages unfair treatment towards the Badjaos.
Imagine for a while that you were a Badjao who buys food in the market. Now that people have read this sickening chain message, would you expect to be treated fairly? How would you feel hearing statements like, "Hala Badjao man na siya palayo ana kay covid"?
𝘿𝙍𝙔
We cry hurt when we see news that health workers are being discriminated. But for Badjaos who have been discriminated for quite a long time prior to this pandemic, we say "palayo," and even have the audacity to forward this message.
This only means that we are choosing whom to discriminate, and not disallowing discrimination and negative stereotyping in general.
Basta Badjao, okay lang sa atoa. Lain, dili?
